Half Price Books is always a good time! I usually go to the HPB location on 410 near North Star Mall and was pleasantly surprised to learn there was one in the Huebner area. This store is not as large as others but they still have a huge selection of new books as well as used books. The staff at this location was amazing and helped me find a couple first editions I was looking for. Please note that their first edition or more expensive books are located next to their sell counter and everything is under key, so you gotta ask for someone to help you with those. Overall, a great experience and can't wait to come back and check out what else I can find! read more

Fair prices with lots to see. I've been to this location a number of times and have never been disappointed with my visit. The staff members are friendly and extremely helpful, I never have to wait long for an offer on books I bring in to sell, and I'm always able to find great books and gifts. The store has tons of movies, video games, and nerdy merch, so it's easy to leave with something other than books as well. I was also really excited on my last visit to see that they had a good selection of Webtoon books, including hardbacks of True Beauty and paperbacks of Lumine. Great place to buy books, but selling back is not really worth the trouble. I took about 40 hardback books and popular authors and got maybe .50 a book bit the similar ones on the shelf are marked 8.49-10.50. In the future, I will donate to the library for tax credit. Process for buyback is smooth, though, and they get through fairly quickly once you check in. Love the stickers and bookmarks, though. read more

Don't buy comics here! All the stores have jacked up their prices but this one has gone a bit further. They bag up comics in a grab bag of 5 for $5 but the only one worth buying is the one you can see...maybe. I bought 3 and it's mostly garbage. I used to go to this store because they had a great selection of clearance comics - now they have this. Go to the Evan's Rd Half Price, they do the comic grab bag thing right, plus they have a good selection of clearance comics too. So, disappointed in Huebner - probably not going back, especially not for comics. read more

I always go to the HPB on Bandera, so I decided to try this one for a change, and I was not disappointed. There's a bigger selection of books that are to my liking (psych. technical books/textbooks) and I was able to find a good GRE guide! However, I will say that the prices on certain books are slightly more expensive, but very high quality, I will definitely be coming back to this location! If you've never been to a HPB and you love books, you should 100% check out this chain of stores. read more

Total scam on buying books. I brought in over 22 books and was offered $4.20. I donated them. Not going to give them to a store that is going to make a ridiculous profit. Also they won't provide a list of the books and the values nor show you on their computer. So maybe you'd sell the higher value book and donate the others. Completely nontransparent process. Will not deal with them as a buyer or seller. There are other places to buy used books. read more

This particular HPB is in a very convenient, busy shopping center. It's nice to have a quiet spot like this tucked between the bustling shops. A friend of mine had an anxiety attack due to the rowdiness at Flying Saucer. We took her to Half Price, where the comfort of books helped her relax. We were very thankful HPB provided that refuge for her. The selection is varied, and while the sellback value for any books won't get you much, their stock is affordable. As digital distribution becomes increasingly dominant, I find myself appreciating brick-and-mortar outlets, especially resellers with an ever-changing inventory of media, both old and new. I'm the target age for downloadable content, yet I prefer collecting physical media (books, CDs, DVDs, video game discs/cartridges) as opposed to ephemeral binary code. Half Price Books is a physical media collector's dream, with a huge stock of books (including early editions), music (CDs and vinyl), movies (DVD, Blu-ray, VHS, and even Laserdisc), and video games. The Bandera and 1604 store is much closer to my home, but I've had better luck at this location on Huebner. Film analysis is one of my favorite genres, so I've been pleasantly surprised to find several somewhat obscure, reasonably priced books on the subject. On recent visits, I've picked up "The Zombies That Ate Pittsburgh," an entertaining and thorough discourse on the films of George A. Romero ("Night of The Living Dead," "Dawn of the Dead," "Martin," among others) and a hard-copy edition of "The Films of Alfred Hitchcock." Both were in excellent condition and listed for less than $10 each. My tastes in music are nontraditional, to put it mildly, yet I've stumbled upon several gems at this location. If your aesthetics extend beyond the fetid waters of Beyoncé and Smash Mouth, then consider bypassing the CDs displayed front and center and turn your attention a foot or two below, where the staff buries releases from lesser known artists. Over the years, I've found a near-mint copy of Scott Walker's 1967 eponymous debut (the one featuring the definitive recording of Jacque Brel's "My Death"), Marc Almond and the Willing Sinners' "Mother Fist and Her Five Daughters," the underappreciated early 80s Post-Punk/Industrial "Nada!" album by Death in June, and an outstanding compilation of underground electronic French music titled "So Young But So Cold." The Death in June and Marc Almond CDs often fetch a pretty penny online, but I picked them up at Half Price for $2 each. Granted, you'll have to sift through roughly 1,000 M.C. Hammer maxi singles to find something worth buying, but that's part of the fun. Now that Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray are the preferred media for physical movies, you'll find thousands of DVDs at heavily discounted prices. I'm a fan of schlocky horror films, Italian horror and gialli, and challenging, experimental cinema, so I was ecstatic to find pristine copies of Ted V. Mikels' exploitation classic "Astro Zombies," Mario Bava's proto-giallo "The Girl Who Knew Too Much," Polish filmmaker Andrzej Żuławski's controversial "Szmanka," and a compilation of Alejandro Jodorowski films, all for a fraction of the price I've seen online. On rare occasion, you might stumble upon something special and unexpected. About three years ago, I was browsing through the vinyl records when I saw what appeared to be a picture frame tucked away unlovingly between two shelves. A closer inspection revealed it to be a framed copy of an Ultravox! (the original incarnation of the band from the late 70s) CD and an autograph of its front man, John Foxx. I've yet to meet anyone in San Antonio familiar with Foxx, one of my favorite musical artists of all time, so I must give sole credit to serendipity on this occasion. The piece is now displayed proudly in my bedroom. Half Price Books is great place in which to get lost; time seems to melt as you browse, read, and discover. If you're like me, you'll leave with much more than you anticipated. I need a bigger house. read more

Clearly one of the best places to find first editions at a low price. I had the good fortune to find Roberto Bolano's Savage Detectives (1st edition) and "A little Lumpen Novelita' (New Directions) at a very low price since it is a collector's item. My daughter bought me a rare dual set of Dostoevsky's "The Diary of a Writer" for Christmas. As a writer and freelance journalist, I truly feel at home at this bookstore because the staff is erudite and helpful. A bibliophiles' delight. I have visited this Half Price multiple times to sell some items and each time has been a solid experience. The store is located conveniently off I-10 on Huebner Rd. and is easy to access, although parking can be somewhat tight because of the other shops located in the strip. The staff is always welcoming and asks if I need assistance in finding any item or bringing my items in the store. I have visited other Half Prices and I feel that I have made the most at this location, which I am thankful for! They have great selection of books, records, videos, stationary and more. Worst half price bookstore i have been too. I went in with such a cheerful heart & excited to find some great reads when I was confronted by a very rude lady enforcing me to wear a mask. Very rudely telling me to wear one. I was just in HBS a couple weeks ago and there was no issue. Never going to this location again. If all of the HBS will be enforcing, I will no longer be shipping here. I prefer to go here vs. Barnes and Nobles but I will spend my money where my freedoms are respected. read more

This Half Price Books really rocks. I suppose it encompasses everything a cool discounted book store should; a cool set up, warm staff, a neat selection of fun things like stationary, music, magazines and of course books. The prices are wonderful, even though the buy back offers are not... I love that coffee is available, I can carry my dog in with me and the public can post ads and such on the cork board. I enjoy how the cashier booth is like 3ft off the ground as if the employees are some sort of book prophets. I do wish there were an easier way to checking inventory, but if you require a specific book that bad I suppose try the Internet or a big box book retailer. My most recent trip earlier this month included picking up a memoir and walking over to Flying Saucer to enjoy a glass of wine and a few chapters. Can't say enough good things about this place. My favorite bookstore in town never ceases to amaze. The breadth and depth of their collection of books is remarkable. You can find almost anything you want in paper or hardback. Today I found a flawless edition of Eugenides' MIDDLESEX complete with pristine dust jacket for a modest 6 bucks. Not bad for a book about 3 inches thick (and an excellent book BTW). Why would anyone ever buy a new book, when you can find all that and more at this bookstore? Sure, you find notes in the margin once in a while or maybe a hand-written name inside the cover, but I would say that makes a book so much more special. In my experience, staff is always helpful with finding obscure titles or authors, and if they don't have it, they'll be happy to let you know where you can find it. read more

What's there to say about this place that hasn't already been said? It's the best alternative to Barnes and Nobles, that sells their stuff at muy high prices!!! Given that like The Smiths said, "some bookstores are bigger than others", and some are better than other others. While the Half-Priced book by Northstar Mall is a nightmare, the one on Huebner Road is the way to go. For my buck, I like going somewhere that is organized and open-spaced. At this particular location you can walk freely and not feel like you are gonna bump into someone. At the one by Northstar Mall it's a Mark Twain mosh pit. What is so cool about this location is that the staff are knowledgeable and ask if you need any help locating something or anything. At other locations, especially the aforementioned, the clerks act more Book Wormy Than Thou. As for the selection they have a healthy amount of literature, hard to find vinyl( Yes, I spotted the 1st record of Pantera here, when they were a Glam-rock outfit.), Cd's, DVDs, you name it they probably have it here. On this day I bought a copy of "Canterbury Tales" at an El Cheapo price. What I like about this place is the service. The lines don't get too long here and the clerks are always courteous and get you in and out relatively quickly. If your looking for a good read or your trying to impress a potential mate with a bigger vocabulary check this location out. Afterwards, you can go to the Flying Saucer next door, grab a brew and chat about wizards, Shakespeare or whatever bookworms do these days. read more

Quite honestly, if you've been to one Half Price, you've been to all of them... in the sense that you understand how the buy-back works and what to expect. This location is surprisingly clean and organized, and consistently so. Employees here are also among the friendliest- it's subtle though. They won't harass you with their helpfulness, but they will greet you upon entry, help you find what you're looking for if you ask nicely, and if you're really lucky, they'll even go look in the back for something too. And maybe, just maybe, you'll be looking for a book that just came in and an employee set it aside for themselves to take home-- and they'll let you take it instead, knowing that it'll inevitably come in again in the next week or so. Despite some of the prices going up ( as one could argue it should be called 3/4 price) The selelction on books, dvds and music is very good. Better quality that thrift and still less expensive than the big box stores. I honestly think their edge lies in their customer service. All the employees I've encountered have been knowledgeable, courteous and generally interested in helping me. I've looked for hard to find items and each search of the inventory has either found my item or suggestion of something else I might enjoy. The stores are clearly organised and bathrooms are always clean and well stocked. They offer coupons, in store discount sales and online discounts as well. My only issues are that they seem to low ball the value of items they buy from you and I've witnessed them throwing away boxes and boxes of books, for whatever reason. I've been here several times in the past and have brought my kids recently. This location has been clean and the staff has been friendly. The last time we went we had issues with unsafe conditions. My concerns and recommendations went unheeded. Additionally, my prior Yelp review was removed. It was stated that it appeared that I didn't actually have first hand experience there. However, I clearly stated in my review that we had been there. Poor decision making by owners/management. Did they make a false report of my review because of low rating? Half Price Books lives up to its name. You can get good quality books for (usually) less than half the listing price. Well-organized and welcoming, this store is a great place to stop if you are looking for something in particular or just in the mood to browse amid shelves with that old, well-loved book smell. I have bought numerous books at this place and recently took a few in for the first time. I brought in two books that are both popular, new releases that were in excellent condition. In fact, I considered taking them back to Border's because I still had the receipt from when I bought them. However, I decided to be a good, honest citizen and take them to Half Price instead. Well, I got a dollar for each. Whoopee! I may have kinda started rethinking my desire to be a good citizen. But with $2 burning a hole in my pocket, I strutted the well-stocked aisles of Half Priced Books until I found something I had wanted to read for a while (Flowers for Algernon, in case you were wondering) which, with my $2 voucher, only cost me $1.98. Not too shabby. I love this place for buying books, but I guess the moral of the story is don't expect to pay your way through college selling back your books here. Unless your rent comes to $2. Funny how people complain about selling their "valuable" books here. Hello, the name of the store is HALF PRICE BOOKS. This is not an upscale boutique bookstore. If a book retails for $20 originally then they are selling it for $10 so that means they are going to buy it from you for no more than $5 (and that's if it's a hot book that's gonna sell fast). Other factors that go into what you will get for your book besides it's condition is popularity and availability. If they have 30 copies of the book you are trying to sell them or it's going to sit on the shelf for a year, then expect to get virtually nothing for it. When I "sell" my books to HPB I get statsifcation out if knowing that someone else will be able to enjoy the book at a reasonable price. I'm not selling my books to make money. read more

I love that I can get books from my favorite writers at a decent price and not have to worry about paying full for it. Especially when the books are still in great condition. I know I could very easily get a used book from the library but I LOATHE returning! So this is my alternative! Plus they always have neat little 'happy crap' items for sale. We stumbled upon this place after going to dinner at the Flying Saucer and we were so pleasantly surprised. The prices were so incredibly reasonable - most of the books were around $6-7 and they have every genre you could dream of. They have an "Old books" section which is full of leather bound books that I just fell in love with. Aside from books, they have an extensive comics collection for about $1.50 each. They also have a great vinyl and CD music section as well. In addition, they also have a few walls full of DVDs that didn't cost much and even had some DVD boxed sets for some TV shows. They had season 1 of the Office (the British version) for about $7. For the ladies, they had a couple seasons of Sex And The city for $9. This place was so wonderful to browse and my bf and I each found some really interesting things we liked for a great price. We will most likely come back. I highly recommend it. read more
