I went to Half Price Books with three gym bags full of books. I was cleaning the attic and took the books to create space at home and get some money in the process. I only got $25 for the books I brought in. To make it worth the effort I'll have to wait to until I have a rather sizeable load to take in. Making room in my house is a good enough reason to take my used books to Half Price Books. Getting money for my used books is icing on the cake. read more

One of the two main Half Price Books locations I visit (Vernon Hills being the other one), this spot provides a reasonable spot to sell old books while being able to buy lightly used ones at a discount. The book trade in process here is fairly easy and they are able to appraise books quite fast, though the values aren't super high -- though on the flipside they pretty much take any books for trade in. The shelves and displays are well maintained, and you can find lots of interesting and unusual books here. This is also a good place to look for some lightly used board games and refresh yourself on new editions or different variations of these games that might be as obvious when shopping elsewhere. The checkout process is fairly quick and friendly as well and there's plenty of parking right outside the store. Just be careful of the traffic pattern in the shopping center, particularly around the Asian grocery store as people tend to drive a bit fast within the lot. read more

The staff on the floor was super-helpful and the store was well-organized and easy to navigate. I was there only to buy, not sell, and came away with four books and a couple new items like a Hello Kitty day planner for my wife. Overall a nice store, clean and easy to enjoy, with a helpful staff. The only thing keeping me from giving five stars is the pricing. It's pretty common that one can find me on the hunt for reasonable priced books, so I often bop around from various HPBs to find different books. The Schaumburg location is the largest I've been to so far. From new books, to classics, to all that's in between the rotation of gems that you can find here vary from time to time but you're bound to walk out with a few goodies if you have the time to look. One of the down fall of this location is it's organization, although they are organized by genre... if a book can fall between two different genres you're likely to have to look at both sections. It's not often organized alphabetically well, but again if you have the time to take a gander through the shelves you'll find some gently used gems. Disc Replay and Half Price Books both suck if you're expecting to make some profit from selling used items. Although Disc Replay does give you a bit more money for used video games than Half Price Books. However, if you're looking to buy items, they have a myriad of books, movies, CD's, some video games, and a bunch of other random stuff. I might have to go to the location by me to look at graphic novels and comic books. You'll find that a lot of these items are like new and barely used. Customer service was fine. I do have to subtract some stars since they gave me $11 for 3 used video games for PS3/360. read more

Please avoid selling at this location or supporting this location. I have never experienced such racism, sexism and discrimination from management of a corporate store. Other stores do not operate this way. The management is despicable. I believe the managers are a man named Kevin and a female named Mallory. I could be wrong. Please feel free to confirm or deny this. I've also been lied to and laughed at. They don't even know their own selection and make fun of customers in front of them. If you do not like the place you work, do not choose to work there and make everyone else's life miserable. I hope they seek employment elsewhere because the cashiers and booksellers/employees are kind and trying their hardest. I hope that they realize the reason no Schaumburg (or Chicagoland) book reader comes here is because they run a terrible store and true professionals would never put up with this level of abuse in a work environment. It's like walking in a library! Spacious store with a lot to offer. Books of all genres and of many kinds. They have high book cases and coves with genres. They also have quite the fiction section. It's a great place to find a used book for half the cost or less of new. They also have a section for new releases at 20% off. I walked out with two books: Erik Larson's In The Garden of Beasts, and Malcom X's autobiography (mass print publication) only $13 for both. The social distancing with customers need some work, but that's a common problem everywhere. The public doesn't always follow the rules. The staff helped me out on finding the Malcom X autobiography and I thought that it's hard to get that help at such a chain, but not here. Seller beware! I went to sell some books at HPB schaumburg, and the first thing they ask me for is a state ID. I said "to sell used books?" and the assocaiate said "it's because we're giving you cash." I can't tell you the number of times I've sold used books to stores for cash, and have never been asked for an ID. I feel this is an unnecessary invasion of privacy which exposes your info when HPB gets hacked (and you know they will). This was done BEFORE they even make you the pitiful offer they are going to make to you. My books were "a hard sell" according to the assocaite, so they could only offer me $5. I have a feeling ALL books are a "hard sell" for them, that way they can lowball you, then mark 'em up for sale. Unless you want your info compromised, AVOID selling to HPB. read more

This store is ok. I bought a few books. I think the prices are higher here than in Vernon Hills. Also, some items seemed expensive, like a DVD series of an old TV show I like to watch (Barney Miller) was priced $34.99. It's on sale new at Amazon for $39.99, which seems like a better deal to me. I didn't look at everything, but the selection of Myths and Fables, as well as the selection of medical books was better in Vernon Hills, which I had visited earlier in the week. I would stop there again, but only if I was in the area. They had one of those barriers up at the counter, and it was hard for me to hear the lady working there . I misunderstood her. I didn't think she was very nice about it, but I guess it could have been a lot worse. She was the only person I spoke with during my visit. I seem to remember this store being very friendly when it was in Palatine, but the pandemic may have changed that. read more

I knew I wouldn't make much, but when I went to drop off relatively new books that were worth at least $100 in total (what I spent) I was expecting a minimum of $50 as their buy offer. Not really half price, but this place is definitely worth checking out and cheaper than regular bookstores! They have older selections, but they still do hold some current popular book titles. The venue is just as clean and big as any other Barnes and Noble and cheaper. They aren't a boutique bookshop where there is a limited amount of books and small. So excited to see this place! I'd heard it was opening here, but hadn't given it much thought until I noticed it as I was passing by today. Had to make a quick stop. I think Discovery Clothing used to be here, next to Hobby Lobby, and what a better and more worthy use of space this is! Being brand new, it is clean and well organized. The children's section is especially well stocked, with a small table to use while browsing books. I don't ordinarily buy books, as I am a library lover, but I did finally break down and buy a copy of Divergent, since the library waiting lists are miles long for this title. The employees we encountered were all friendly, especially the cashier who double wrapped a book for me that I mentioned was a surprise for my son. read more

We love this store!!! I started shopping at Half Price Books now that I have 2 avid readers. I used to purchase books at Barnes and Noble or Amazon, but I feel like spending so much money on brand new books don't seem to make sense anymore when you can buy the same exact book and save at least 25 percent off! This place is huge! Most the of books that I have purchased from here were children's books. My boys are now into novel books and they read books everyday. For those who wants to save money, I definitely recommend for you to check this place out and start saving! Oh and save trees- save the !!! It's a win win! I've loved Half Price Books for a couple of decades now. In high school, I used to beg my mom to drive me thirty minutes to the closet HPB (yeah, I was a bit nerdy). But now it's a mere 8-10 minutes from my home. I really love this location for two reasons: 1) They were CRAZY generous with a donation to a public school event that I organized last year. I'm forever thankful for that. 2) I always find tons of books that I want for myself or my classroom. I also love the overall cozy feel of the place, free coffee gesture and teacher discount. One caveat: Do not expect big bucks selling to HPB. The other day, I took at least ten books and magazines in to sell. My big offer? One buckaroo. I lol'd and took it. This is a review of the vinyl selection only... Like many of the other area HPBs locations I've reviewed, this HPB has a fairly nice collection of records in terms of genre diversity--one will find a decent selection of classical and jazz and a nice big selection of pop and rock records, along with a iittle bit of country, some blues, and a bit of soundtrack and world, as well. Like the Palatine HPB, the clearance bin is a great place to find records, and often, the quality if just as good if not better than the stuff available up top. Of course, the big advantage is the prices are clearance--either 1.00 or more often just .50 cents. As with all the other HPB locations, the quality of the records can sometimes vary quite a bit, so it's always best to check condition before buying. Unfortunately, rather than pricing the records more like Bloomingdale or Palatine, this one is often more like Naperville and Niles, where the prices are often higher than the condition of the records actually warrants. I stopped in to look for two things: records and blu-ray movies. Umm, who does the pricing at this place? Records: I realize that the demand for records has increased over the last few years, but I saw a lot of beat up records, scuffed spines on albums covers, missing record jacket/sleeves and scratched records that were way overpriced. For example, there was a Led Zeppelin copy of Physical Graffiti that was scratched, cover falling apart and heavily worn...$30?!?! I picked up another record that was warped for $20? Blu-Ray Movies: I have a very high end home theater system. Too much quality is lost with streaming from Netflix or such, finding a place that sells a decent selection of blu-ray movies is important. Selection was limited, but I did see a few titles I would have gotten. However, why would I want to pay more for used copies when I get it new for less at Target, Best Buy or anywhere else? I don't think I noticed a single title that was cheaper elsewhere. If you like DVDs, you'll be ok and find them for a few bucks. I did buy a book, but it wasn't close to half priced. I bought it because I really didn't want to go to another place to save $3. No denying they have a good selection of books when a lot of book retailers are closing across the country. Do not take your DVD's to this store and expect anything in exchange. I took in 48 movies and received $13.00 How does that equate? They will then turn around and sell them for $5.99/average.
