On a recent lunch date with dear friends, we visited Halibut House in Markham. We had their Wednesday Special - Cod & Chips, with Coleslaw. It was a good sized portion, and a good deal for only $14.99. The fish was perfectly cooked, with a light batter. A generous portion of fries, and a vinegar based coleslaw were included to complete a delicious meal. The only thing that would have made this meal better, is homemade tartar sauce, rather than the little packets. If you're in Markham, off Hwy 7, between Markham Rd and 9th Line, check out this place. It's been a while since I had fish & chips from Halibut House. A bit disappointed with two recent experiences. I say two because I went back to give them another try. Ordered the halibut and chips. Very greasy and patches on the fish with no batter. Clearly someone missed a step here with cooking our meal or the oil wasn't hot enough or both. I love to support local but I prefer to drive to Stouffville (Joy's) and Toronto for fish and chips now. Been here for breakfast as well as lunch. Easy going diner style feel. Friendly service. Great breakfast deals! Very reasonable prices (rare to find in this economy). The sign outside visible off Hwy 7 that shows "Breakfast Special Only $5.95" is not outdated! This deal gets you an egg, 2 sausages, bacon, or ham,2 slices of buttered toast as well as some "homefries" which were just small cuts of potatoes (not your typical crunchy hashbrowns). They also offer breakfast poutine (pictured below) which are tater tots topped with cheese, green peppers and hollandaise sauce - a bit too rich for my liking but definitely tasty. Coffee is refillable. Plenty of parking as this plaza rarely gets busy. Breakfast items served until 2pm Their fish and chips are great as well. Nice, light batter compared with that of a traditional beer batter. Their tartar sauce could be better. It comes in those individual packets so not made fresh in house. One of my favourite fish & chip restaurants. I've been coming here for years and years. Fish, the halibut is cream of the crop but it'll set you back. Their batter is light. Fish is always fried to perfection. The cod has a special on Wednesdays, so it's really such a better deal. They have various other specials throughout the week. I prefer their poutine over most places. I have travelled all over Ontario and I still prefer theirs. Perhaps my opinion only, but their cheese curds melt creamy soft but still whole chunks (not squeaky cold chewy curds like how other places boast). They give you decent amounts of gravy because that's the only way poutine should be served. Tartar sauce. Used to be unlimited packages - some simple brand (I don't recall the name). Then some time later they made single packages shaped like the peanut butter sized small rectangular sized. Now they've swapped to another package similar to the first but not the same but they do limit how many you get - not unlimited but sufficient. Not a huge deal but tartar sauce is a must with fish and chips. Definitely a place worth checking out if you love fish and chips, the upgrade to poutine makes it 10/10. read more

My go to chain for fish and chips. They have Wednesday and Sunday specials starting at $12.99 which is a fair price. The fries were soft and not as crisp as I would like and the coleslaw is decent enough (for someone that typically dislikes coleslaw). But this is a fish and chip establishment and fish is the most important item to rate. Its served with a consistent crunch to the batter and although it comes apart easy when cut, the batter stays with the fish so you're not awkwardly poking around trying to put the pieces back together. There are probably more boujee places that serve dishes for $20+ but Halibut house doesn't miss. read more

Something fishy about this review... Large location with comfortable booth or table seating. Quick and friendly service, and lots of food options. They even have Grape Crush...I was in overly excited! We had the Halibut and chips, with coleslaw and it was fresh, crispy, and very delicious. Also tried the deep fried mushrooms with ranch sauce. We requested they exclude the Parmesan cheese. They were good but a little smaller size mushroom would have been nicer. This location is very clean, and so was the woman's washroom. Hit the spot with this fish and chips spot! Been driving by this fish and chip spot and it's really sparked interest, so I decided to grab some take out here. It was an easy phone call to order ahead of time so that I can just walk in, pay, grab and go. Upon arriving, the place was pretty full with diners. It's not a fancy place, don't expect it to be but looks like a low key spot with amazing food. I got the haddock and chips and halibut and chips and both were great. It came with all the regular fixings you'd get in the restaurant like packs of vinegar, tartar sauce and ketchup. The fish pieces are large and crispy. Fries could be a bit crispier though and can spend some more time in the fryer. Pricing is about mid range pricing, nothing too expensive or cheap in my opinion. Came here after visiting my Uncle at the hospital. The servers were nice, but the food was average. My daughter was craving fish and chips so I brought her here but the food did not satisfy her. I wouldn't tell someone to avoid this place. I'd encourage them to check it out for themselves, but I personally will not be back. I had a shrimp salad and my 5 year old daughter had the halibut fish & chips. The breading didn't have much flavor and kind of tasted like the oil was old. We did come in the middle of the day so maybe this isn't the best time to visit. Also we had some trouble finding the place which I think you'd have a 50/50 shot of. The directions took me to the parking lot near the convenience store when we walking past and went further into the little business complex it looked like the fish & chip house was papered/boarded up and closed. We hopped back into the car to leave and as a last ditch effort drove around the other side of the building and discovered the restaurant. It is very easy to find from this side of the building, but if you went the way we did your first time you could easily think this establishment was gone. read more

I ordered the eggs benedict..it arrived in my table and i think it's the worst i have ever had. It came in a toast bread with a sliver of peameal bacon and a salty sauce of hollandaise. I ordered coffee and had 2 refills when i asked for more the asian waitress said that she is not allowed give a lot of reffills but will make an exception..i said, no worries it's ok. Saw earlier reviews giving this place a 1 star, my honest opinion is 3.5 star. Don't know how they came up with that unfair rating!!!! I've eaten at this location on occasion for many years, yes the price has gone up with inflation, but look at the picture for the portion! It is the actual size of the Sunday special. I took the picture with a fork and salt shaker as reference. You be the judge! I personally don't think it's small, I'm a big eater, and I'm full from the serving. Value 4.5 stars. I came here on a Saturday evening with a friend and it was a little busy but we were able to be seated right away. I got the halibut fish and chips and my friend got the chicken souvlaki. Their halibut was sub par and pretty average. Their fries could have been salted more too but at least they were crunchy. The chicken was really good though and surprisingly juicy. The fish were all really crispy and the chips had the great crispy and soggy texture. The fish all had a great light batter exterior with tender fish inside. I was a little skeptical at first due to the appearance of the plaza and external storefront but upon going in, it's got cute diner vibes for breakfast! On a weekend it was the perfect kind of busy, no lineup but lively enough to bring up the atmosphere. I ordered the 2 eggs with sausages, home fries and buttered toast which was more than enough food for me. Our home fries were freshly made so it was warm, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. This place is such a reasonable price which is hard to come by these days. They have very busy take out traffic here, but you can easily find an empty booth or table with yourself to a really big group here. The fries are chip truck style, so thickly cut, with a small side of coleslaw, no lemon wedges unless requested. The tartar sauce comes in packets, next to the vinegars and ketchup. I came here for take out on a Friday night, and as expected it was a tad bit busy, which I didn't mind since we knew we were getting freshly fried fish & chips. Super friendly staff, and the service for takeout was SO FAST, history I think it was only about 8min !! Even after sitting in the car for almost 10 minutes it still tasted delicious! The fish has a even costing of batter all around the fish, and they give you a ton of chips with your order. We came here with a coupon for 2 Haddock & Chips for $12 and boy was it a good deal. I grew up in the Beaches area. On my way to and from school, I would pass by a fish and chips store. My parents would get takeout often from this restaurant. When I could afford to buy something there, I'd get chips, wrapped in newspaper. After my grade 12, I worked there that summer. The owners liked me. They insisted that I have dinner there after work. I thought that it was weird, but I caved in. It served the best halibut and chips. That restaurant is long gone. A few years ago, I found a similar mom-and-pop restaurant that served yummy halibut and chips. Sadly, that one folded over a year ago. A cafe now occupies that location. Enter Halibut House. I decided to order halibut and onion rings for takeout. I think that I have found my place for halibut! The halibut was perfect. It was flaky and tender. It's a decent size and it has a thin, crispy batter. I get tired of fries these days. I opted for onion rings. So good! The onions we're sweet and the batter was perfect. We were in the area and was deciding what to eat and saw the Halibut House, since we haven't had fish and chips for a while we decided to try that and it was a great decision.  We were greeted and seated right away. We were thrilled they also served breakfast which was a better option for our kids. Plus you can't go wrong with $3.95 for the breakfast which was a good portion for our kids. Once we decided on our orders the food was brought to us quickly all at once. The food was great, the portions was huge and the price was reasonable. We had to pack some to go too. The restaurants was spacious and it was busy the whole time we were there, but since everything was quick everyone was in and out quickly as well. Reason for Visit: Recommended by friend for their Sunday/Monday/Wed special. Menu: First, this place is relatively hard to find. It is in a small plaza next to houses. When I first walked in, I had a local cafeteria feel to it. The specials unfortunately went up in price to $8 now. Nevertheless, I tried their haddock / chips Monday special. Food came fast, and to my surprise, the portions were huge. I was not aware of such a large portion or I would not had ordered a side of onion rings (which was also huge). Honestly, the fish was far superior to stuff from local bars such as Milestone's, Montanas, etc. The fries were not as crispy as I liked mainly cause they put the fish on top and most of the fries were soggy. Coleslaw was amazing. Service: Super busy on the days with specials. Don't expect any fancy service. Ordered takeout for lunch . This is still the middle of the COVID situation (about 4months now). I don't know how to convey my disappointment in how the food came out. The fries were just plain Jane dry like the cardboard box it came in. I'm not a chef but I feel like they must have fried it up ahead of time and just left it there or they refried it . Either way it is excusable to serve fries of that calibre when I assume it is suppose to be their go to item. I'm not gonna be a saviour for the business with my lunch purchase. But I'm also working to earn my money during these tough times. And to pay $15+ for their halibut fries and chip (3 orders) where majority of the meal had to be tossed out is hard to accept. My favourite fish n chips place! They have a special on Mondays ($7 for fish n chips) which is why I exclusively only come here on Mondays. Such a good price for good quality fish at a good portion size. The batter is always light, crisp, and not too oily. The fish inside is always perfectly done - soft and flakey. I do wish the fries were a bit more salted but it's nbd. The restaurant itself is not the most aesthetically pleasing since it's cheap eats but it has a nice home-y vibe. Halibut house is an amazing neighborhood restaurant. It just has that homey feel to it and the food is just as comforting as the entire experience. We got their breakfast and a halibut lunch special for our brunch, and we couldn't be any more satisfied. The breakfast was only $3.49 and was incredibly worth it. I ordered a sunny side egg with bacon and there's a whole bunch of homestyle fries too. Everything was just so hot and fresh. The bacon was crisp, the sausage was meaty with a snap, and the egg was perfectly done. Combined with a hot cup of coffee and you have an amazing breakfast cheaper than McDonald's. The fish was incredibly light and flakey without being overly oily. I'd definitely recommend the halibut over the haddock but both are really good here. The haddock has more of a chew compared to the halibut. It wasn't a large portion per se but perfectly acceptable considering the amazing price. The fries and slaw were also super tasty. They don't make their own tartar sauce here it seems but I actually do fancy the packet ones as they're extra sweet and creamy. read more
