It's my first time at Halibut House and I wanted to try a variety from their menu so we ordered the cod and chips, chicken souvlaki and calamari. The fish and chips are solid choices and they live up to their name. A good amount of chips that come with the meal. I think for the price we were a bit disappointed by the quantity of the calamari and for the chicken souvlaki, a bit sad looking (see pic) and not as flavourful or just below par. Definitely skip the souvlaki here and get what they're known for. Plenty of seating inside the restaurant. However, we just ordered for takeout. read more

I've visited this Halibut House location in Thornhill, this time for dine-in. I ordered the lunch size halibut And Right off the bat , the waitress said it is "this small with a hand gesture". I said ok no problem Upon my food arriving it was pretty small ( look at pic). And I would have given a 1 star review But I must say the halibut (even though miniature in size) was actually crispy and flavourful and even though I didn't take a picture, the fish was pretty thick. Therefore my reason for 3 stars. Also, the fries were not quite right for a fish and chips shoppe. Either they were frozen or they were re-cooked for too long and they were hard, bland and tasteless. I will still keep my review at 3 stars. But I don't think I'll be back anytime soon. Sorry, hope they can do better for other patrons. read more

Super mid. The food is not bad, but also nothing special. I did find it a bit pricy to have that small cod piece for 20 dollars. The service was good, and the ambiance was low-key/diner vibe. It is not the tidiest restaurant. I may come back for their daily special, but that's about it. read more

Fish and chips are great. Came here on a weekday dinner. Decent amount of takeout orders but not many people dining in. This place has a ton of selection not just for the protein but for all the different side combinations you can accompany your fish/shrimp/scallop. Their combos I think are quite good value. I got the Seafood Platter (23.95) which included battered haddock, 3 battered black tiger shrimp, 3 breaded bay scallops, fresh cut fries and a small coleslaw. It's definitely a ton of food. It's a pretty light batter overall, nice and dry on the outside but a nice fluffy inside for the haddock. Quality stuff. I'm quite skeptical of fish and chips being too oily and just leaving you feeling full and bogged down but this place does it right! Will for sure return here! read more

Very solid Fish & Chips! Don't let the franchise thing scare you off, the owners here are a really nice young couple who care a lot about the food they put out. Everything is freshly made, cooked with care, and served by friendly warm staffers. Sunday Monday they have a haddock fish and chips special that is a really great deal, and everything I have had there has been very solid. Better than most of the places that charge twice as much. I like the fries well done, and the fish cooked lightly, crisp but juicy. Ask for lemon and tartar sauce, and you'll be back! read more

We picked up four fish meals today to bring to a Father's Day lunch - 2 orders of cod and chips, and 2 orders of grilled halibut with salad. The salads were fresh, but unfortunately the fish and chips were dry and overcooked. The fish was so hard and dry, and the fries were starchy and over-fried. We ended up throwing out half of our meals. We've been to this location a few times in the past and always enjoyed the food, but today it was just really, really bad. And it wasn't just one meal that was bad - all four fish meals were really awful. A restaurant that specializes in fish and chips should be able to do one thing really well - make great fish and chips! - but today made us seriously reconsider visiting and recommending this restaurant again. Got takeout from here and it was delicious! Really hit the spot, and even though it was takeout (drive for me was about 10 min total there and back), the fish batter was still so crispy. Love the way they wrap it up. The fries on the other hand could use some improvement, it's very thick, kinda soft and some overdone. I had them with a poutine as well and it was good, but on their own, I think I'd get bored of them. Would've been better if they had been more crispy. They give you tons of condiments, although, I wish they made their own tartar sauce considering how good their fish is. The prepackage tartar sauce is a bit too sweet for my liking. Hoping to dine in as soon as Covid is past. It's always even better when it comes straight from the fryer. This location is part of a good sized chain. I used to ride out to Port Perry to eat there. Popped in on a Friday night and the place was hopping. Let's start with the restaurant...the place was spotless....Clean, well lit and more spacious than it looks from outside. The menu is pretty varied....seafood, gyros, burgers, etc...but the place is a fish and chips joint. I ordered the halibut and chips. It was $15.95 and it included a large piece of halibut, an ample portion size of chips and coleslaw. The weakest component of the plate was the coleslaw..,it was pretty bland and unappealing. The halibut was delicious....cooked perfectly....excellent portion size. The chips weren't the best I've had...but they were good non the less. The staff were stellar. Attentive and fast. The prices are surprisingly low and I don't know how they can make any profit particularly on the Sunday / Monday halibut specials (8$)! My recommendation is to only get the Halibut, as it seems to be better quality and consistency compared to their Haddock and Cod. Fries are passable, and the staff seem hard working and nice. Friday felt like fish and chips so googled some places and Halibut came up just in the neighbourhood. I went with my Mom and husband for lunch what a wonderful surprise the place is clean, friendly very airy and light filled what a treat. As for our meal it was excellent the fish was moist white and crispy, fries as well it was excellent and I highly recommend the place.
