It was a rainy day so we decided to immerse ourselves in local manufacturing! The tour is super cool - I learned how the entire distilling process happens from vodka to gin and all of the flavors added in! The coconut rum however- off the charts. I've made some Mai Tais using the coconut rum- it's a ver nice addition to an extra tropical spin on a classic. It was one of those days where we wanted to do something else besides the beach so we visited Makawao in the upcountry. We came across this distillery by pure luck. It happened that they do tours and tastings. Pro tip, the price is the same either way. If you are short on time just do the tasting but if you have about 30 extra minutes to give, listen to the history and let them show you how they make their spirits. They have the gin, vodka, and different rums. They have a custom still to extract the heart, their own fermentation tanks, and a small bottling line that can do 100 cases a day. It's a small operation but a good one. They use turbinado sugar which is now imported in and the pineapple from the farm across the street. You can smell all the components used to make the gin and also you can taste a hint of the pineapple used in the vodka. Overall, very good stuff. Highly recommend if you are into distilleries or just spirits. read more

We had a great tour today! They were so accommodating and even though we had two hiccups (our fault) with being a few minutes late and one of our party forgetting their ID (which they are required to check to allow anyone to do a tasting), she was still allowed to join us and learn some new things even though she was not allowed to drink. The tour was super interesting to learn about not only the distilling process for 3 types of liquor, but some background on Hawaii as well. Super friendly folks and such a fun and funny time! This 20 minute tour was wicked informative and the individual leading it was knowledgeable and happy to answer all our questions. I appreciated the interactive nature of the tour- we walked through the production area, saw the distillation process, smelled the pineapple mash and then sampled the finished product! The experience was well worth the tour fee. I ended up leaving with a bottle of the Mahina rum which is not yet available on the mainland, so it was a special "treat" to import it via my luggage! read more

My wife and I did this tour on a spur of moment - after doing the Miami gold tour for pineapples. This tour was unique - the distillery equipment was built by the owner. Is located at the Miami Gold, pineapple plantation. We did it on spur of the moment and pay the $15 for the tour . It is a one room tour then you go to a tasting room where due to local law you get a thimble full of liquor. Probably about 1 ounce divided three tastings. As someone who drinks a little bit, but is no aficionado, I can say this is one of the most mediocre distilleries I've ever been to. Branch and barrel in Centennial, Colorado Mike thrown equipment and man it is amazing. The gin wasn't that good in my opinion, tasted kind of cheap, which must be Frank is pretty much you know what all this stuff taste like The whiskey, which they import at great, economic, and environmental cost to mix with their own crab, did the whiskey, no favors and should've stayed in Kentucky The rum we were told you could put on dessert. I couldn't see putting it in a cocktail let alone a dessert. All I can say, is that people who write five stars are doing so because they're in Maui not because they like liquor Save your 15 bucks and maybe buy some cut up pineapple read more

We have been on this tour many times. Last time was 3 years ago and really didn't want to again. We were on a mission looking for a flavoured vodka, we found out they don't make anymore. With changes of ownership kinda. Sammy left, Mike left, I do believe Mikes son has taken over and has some new idea and flavours. Now into Rum and Gin, and still vodka. Just not the one we wanted. It's okay we decided to buy some gin that had all sorts of names of flowers fruits infused. Don't ask me I can't remember, I'm lucky I can remembered that. This ranking is for the distillery tour (did not enjoy the pineapple tour). Came here on my honeymoon and absolutely loved the distillery tour. They took us into the building next door and we were able to see the juice fermentation and their unique distiller. Their new bottling machine was really cool to see. The tour was done by Nicole who also runs the tasting room so she was really knowledgeable about their different spirits and the process that creates that difference. The spirits themselves were surprisingly good. They were solid in their own right, not just as a novelty spirit in Hawaii. The vodka was clean and had only a little bite. The gin was my favorite, really enjoyable. Pineapple Tour: Did not really enjoy. Very expensive and was a little over an hour for basically a short drive through a pineapple field and two small pineapples to take home. read more

Hali'imaile Distilling Company is located in Maui's pineapple region, Makawao, Maui. This is the only Vodka in the world made from Maui Gold Pineapples. They also make gin, whiskey and rum! The tour guide was adorable! Her "take a shot" joke was perfect! She did look young but assured us she was of the legal age to drink!! The tour was brief and brilliant! I also have to say that the tour guide shared a wealth of knowledge and she was great about answering questions. Plenty of parking and a nice afternoon nip! You can't get anymore "buy local, support local" than these guys & gals.  Located in Makawao, Hali'imaile Distillery produces  a favorite of mine (Pau Maui Vodka) along with Mahina Premium Rum, Paniolo Blended Whiskey and Fid Street Hawaiian Gin.  On Maui, their products can be found at most stores such as Foodland, Island Grocery Depot, Tamura's, Safeway, Walmart, Target and Costco. MY (NEW) DRINK: It's funny how my drink-of-choice has evolved over the years.  From nasty wine coolers which gave me stomach aches, to gin & juice (thanks to Snoop), rum & Coke, way too much beer (which lead to gout), wine which made for a few forgettable nights, and now vodka.  Pau's recipe is very smooth compared to others.  I've always enjoyed the taste of vodka but not straight up; it has to be mixed with something to make it palatable for me.  Cranberry juice, orange juice, cranberry-grape juice or ginger beer will do just fine... TIP: Check out www.paumaui.com for vodka drink recipes. OVERALL: While I have yet to visit the distillery, I will continue to purchase and receive their bottles of vodka with open arms! read more

This was a wonderful experience! The tour was very informative and interesting. Four liquors were featured and the tour guide presented lots of information in a understandable way. At the end of the tour you are given the opportunity to taste 3 of the 4 liquors in a private tasting room. I distaste alcohol tours. Particularly tours that are prerequisites for a single ounce of alcohol. Brewery/distillery tours tend to be process driven and include 32 mentions of "yeast" and "fermenting". Like stop triggering my young adult PTSD, okay? Alcohol production can be pretty complex. But you know what's easy? Sipping some amazing Hawaiian gin like the badass grandma you always wanted to be. Come here with an open mind. It's not a bar. It's a chill spot to have a little bit of gin/vodka/rum/whiskey on premise and love a lot later. Pray that you get an awesome tour guide like Tim. We flew halfway around the world and while there - we took the Haliimaile tour. Coming from a place with more distilleries and breweries per capita than anywhere else in the US (what? It's cold in VT!) we may or may not know our way around a distillery and/or alcohol. When our guide Earl promised the Paniolo rum and his "secret recipe" would either peel our bathing suits off or get us married, we paid attention. While we remained both clothed and wed, he was right about the quality of the rum and the recipe. A relatively small distillery but with surprising range of products done in high quality, with great tour guides and a close link to the local economy. Partnered with the pineapple plantation across the street, this is a visit worth making if you're on Maui. Try a little of everything they make in their on-site tasting room, make notes on the drink recommendations, and when you get home, use what you bought to put some Aloha in your glass! read more

Pretty cool to check out how they use rotten pineapple to make vodka. Pretty much you can take any sugary stuff and turn it into alcohol haha. We finished the Pineapple Tour, so decided to check out the distillery too for a small extra price. The distillery was small and the tour pretty much ended in 15 minutes and tasting lasted another 10-15 mins. I tried their pineapple vodka, the gin and the blended rum. Everything tasted pretty smooth but I honestly couldn't tell the difference from other regular spirits... You get 3 shot tickets per person. The souvenirs were nice but were all too expensive. Already lugging the 4 boxes of pineapples home, we didn't feel like buying any bottles at all so after the tasting, we left. I'd say if you have time to kill and if you really enjoy spirits, go for it, otherwise you can skip it. We did enjoy the tour though! read more

A distillery? On Maui? With so many distilleries across the United States, why create one on the island of Maui? It turns out the founders of Haliimale Distilling were very creative. One of the ways was use of the Maui gold pineapple in the distilling process. It is a very sweet pineapple. All you add is yeast, a background in chemistry and the right equipment. The distillate they produce goes into their Pau vodka, Paniolo (Cowboy) blended whiskey, gin and more. A word about their gin. Whoever came up with the process must have tasted a lot of gins on the market and decided to create something flavorful and different. One more word about their blended whiskey. It is made with three year old aged bourbon whiskey blended with their distillate. I liked the taste and took a bottle home. Liquor laws on Maui are strict. You get to choose any three of their products to try. Absolutely no sharing of samples. Your sample is enough to give you a good idea of what is in the bottle. They do not ship their products. You need to take their tour in order to do a tasting. May I suggest leaving space in your checked baggage for a bottle or two. The vodka comes in both 750 ml and 375 ml bottles. I did not check, but you might be able to locate their products in local liquor stores. Lastly, they had clean restrooms and cold water available. read more

When I went on this distillery tour 4 years ago and it was great! Our tour guide was very nice and he clearly explained the distilling process and let us choose what alcohol we wanted to sample in the tasting room at the end. It was great then ... I went to this tour again yesterday and it wasn't as good as it used to be. The tour guide wasn't very friendly. She spoke really fast and seemed rushed. It was very hard to hear her with her mask on. We also didn't like that the samples were super small (they used to be bigger) and we didn't get to choose what samples we got. read more
