Maui has been our home away from Arizona for decades. Imagine my smile to find a cowboy town with an annual rodeo event. But the real star was an Waikulu Agave Spirits Distillery. ( Uhh... tequila.) Great tour of every step. Sprout to harvest to press to bottle. Viv has excellent knowledge and story. The tour is awesome and informative and usually meet the owner creator before the tasting room. Every level of tastes statisfied. From a dirt road bright and little gritty blanco that brought me back to my southern az youth to several sip and savor worthy goldens in the amazing tasting room. On my last visit to Maui I was surprised to learn that Maui has its own home grown agave plants and it's volcanic soil only makes these plants produce huge piñas that get distilled into amazing agave spirits (they can't say tequila). We drove up the mountain and enjoyed our tasting. The 4 stars are all about what's in the bottle, the tasting room experience isn't as hospitable. So enjoy the spirit. read more

Stumbled on this gem after visiting the Miami Gold pineapple store. Decided why not do some tasting. We had six tastings from vodka to gin to dark rum. Yum! This place is a must visit if you enjoy premium tequila or if you enjoy well crafted spirits. Waikulu makes 100% locally sourced small batch liquor distilled from Maui agave (can't be called tequila if it's made outside of specific regions in Mexico). They make a range of silver and aged versions and do flight tastings. I opted for the 5 tastes, since there we multiple aged options I wanted to try: 6 month, 18 month, and 24 month, plus a sake style version. We ended up taking home a bottle of the Opio and the 24 month limited release. Delicious! The venue is in upcountry Maui which gives you beautiful view of the island and you can see the agave plants directly on the property. The tasting room is charming, with about 6 seats, which feels intimate and exclusive. The friendly and knowledgeable staff also makes this experience top notch. I didnt realize an agave spirit was made in Hawaii, but it is. This product is the labor of love from the owner Paul. He not only started planting agave ten years before bottling, but he also made a lot of the machines to process the spirit....thats real love....and engineering! I was able to tour this distillery in Makawao and it was easily one of the highlights of my visit to Maui. Oliver, our tour guide was a pro. He gives an expert walking tour of the property and he is very, very good at his job....he didn't even mind all my questions! After our tour, he helped us with a tasting of their product...so amazing. Even the workers here were fantastic. Albert, one of the head workers even showed us how to harvest the agave using a coa...a sharp round hoe. He made it look so easy...I would have been a sweaty mess! The tour was all highlights, but the best parts were hearing from the owner as to the distilling process, and his take on the distillery. The pinnacle was tasting the steamed piña after it had been cooked. After 40 hours of heat, you can actually eat/suck out the juices from the pulp. It tastes like happiness and rainbows! Seeing, tasting, and smelling this distillation process overwhelmed my senses with a state of well being. I was very happy knowing this local product is produced in an ethical and sustainable method. And of course, I enjoyed tasting it! I will continue to return to try their new product releases...so much fun...and educational! read more

I've been to Maui many times and never heard about Waikulu Distillery. My cousin and I decided to stop in for a tequila tasting. We both opted for the 5 spirits tasting. The tasting included Batch 1, Silver; Ohana Reserve Silver; 2025 Opio; Ohana Reserve 12+ Months; and Smoke Pepa. I wouldn't say I'm a tequila connoisseur, but I do love tequila. Our server was Viv, and she was delightful. She poured us a special tequila, but I can't remember what it was. I ended up purchasing a bottle of Smoke Pepa, and I'm looking forward to sharing it with my next door neighbor who also loves tequila. We had an amazing experience here, thanks to Viv! read more

100% loved this distillery and their spirits. If you even think you like agave spirits (Tequila) this distillery needs to be on your Maui bucket list. This is some of the if not the best tasting tequila I've ever had. It's not like the stuff we used to shoot in college and chase with a squeeze of lime, you can easily sip this. You get to see the agave plants, they tell you how the process works, and for a very affordable price you get to taste everything they make. The staff is super knowledgeable and super friendly and because the distillery is small you get lots of attention. If you're lucky, you'll even get a chance to meet the founder and distiller. Pick up a few bottles because you can't get this anywhere, but Maui. And the drive there and back, into the high country of Maui, should be something you should take a couple hours to do. read more

I case that wasn't enough, the proof is in the pudding... each tasting was SO GOOD!! We are definitely ensuring we leave more room in our suitcase once we are back! Wow wow wow. A truly amazing experience. I had been eyeing Waikulu distillery before our visit and was so excited to see they had opened for tastings a few months before we arrived on island. I recommend you make your reservations on the website in advance as their tasting room is intimate and they seem to be very popular. The intimate tasting room allows for a great tasting. Our group got to ask our host all kinds of questions about their process. If you are able to snag a tour do it! The operation here is truly awesome. The spirits were truly top notch and rival larger labels. Highly recommend doing the full tasting if you like agave spirits. We truly wanted to take home a bottle of each if we had the space because they were just that good. 10/10 experience - make sure you put this on your Maui itinerary! Party of 4 came in on a Wednesday afternoon without any appointment (FYI kids not allowed in tasting room). We were luckily the only people there and had the tasting room all to ourselves. The drive up was beautiful, I had never been to that area before. I WISH I could remember the name of the employee who gave us the tasting (tall, curly hair) but he was WONDERFUL! I've been to tasting rooms all over the U.S. where some workers either don't know much to anything about their product, but Waikulu made it obvious how much each employee cares about the agave and their process. He was incredibly knowledgable, clearly comfortable in what he does and overall made this a highlight of our Maui week. I can't say enough good things about what I learned today. Had a quick tour of the agave fields and then learned the entire process of making Waikulu spirits! My wife and I were driving from Makawao to Paia when we saw the sign for this distillery. We love distilleries and we decided to take a look. When we walked into the pleasant shop and tasting area we met with two friendly people who work there, one of whom took us on a tour of the distillery and its grounds. We saw the only agave field in Maui and it was stunning. He showed us the harvesting of the agave for the core --- and the cores of the agave plants in Maui are huge! He demonstrated how the core is cut into. He gave us a taste of the agave in little gelatin squares --- they tasted good. And showed us the agave being cooked and fermented in giant tanks before being distilled into the spirits the distillery sells. This is a boutique distillery operation at its best. They are currently waiting for their license to run a tasting room. The tour was informative, great and unique for Hawaii, it was free. I haven't tried the spirits they sell yet as we ran into this distillery by chance at the end of our trip. But if the look of the agave plants is any guide, I'm sure they taste great. If you're in Makawao, this is a great place to visit. read more
