But Jaime is a class act. On the evening of our consultation, he arrived on time and within a few minutes had measured our space and given us a quote. I've worked with contractors before who demand a deposit up front, which always annoys me, because, in my experience, it's more likely that the contractor will not show up, or won't finish a job, than a home owner deciding not to pay up. But Jaime didn't ask for a deposit. Instead, he said I could pay him when the job was completed. He also warned me that it could cost a little extra if there was any leveling that needed to be done. I appreciated him being upfront. It doesn't hurt that he's also polite, friendly and approachable. He's a busy guy so it took him a few days to get back to us to give us a date he and his crew (of one - our apartment is small) could do the install. And poof, just like that, it was done in less than a day. I'd send my recommendation along to anyone who has some flooring that needs to be installed. Jaime was really a pleasure to work with.

It was black granite and there were deep etches in it. They did the job on site. They estimated 4 plus hours but completed it in 3. Both gentlemen very polite, cordial and professional. I thought their rates were reasonable, not as high as the previous writer was quoting. Would definitely recommend.

I had earlier acquired an older hutch with a marble top that required removal of various rings and etch marks. I contacted the owner Fin mid October as the deal was expiring on Oct 31st. We tentatively agreed to meet for the estimate on Friday Oct 26th, however he instead showed up at my place out of the blue Wed evening (Oct 24th). Fin erroneously thought that the top was made of granite. It was in fact made of marble; however I took his word for the purpose of the estimate and his suggested expertise. He explained that restoring the top back to the shine would take 5-6 hours. Sanding it to a dull finish would take around 3. His hourly rate was 150.00 first and 120.00 additional. Fin also wanted an additional 25.00 to seal the surface at the completon. He did not recommend taking the top back to his workplace as he stated that he didn't want me to think he would be cheating on the actual restoration time versus the estimate. Fin also asked about the parking available at my place. When I told him that there was only pay parking available in my building, he asked that I take care of this cost. Despite these red flags and turn offs, I suggested that he come back on Friday November 2nd to complete the job as I do not work on Fridays. I also suggested to him that I was available any Friday, and evening/weekends and there was absolutely no time rush. Fin countered with a time of November 9th and said that this would be better for his guy. I agreed to this term. On Saturday, Oct 27th, Fin sent me an e-mail that he could only come on Monday morning, Oct 29th and that was the only date he could do the job. If I didn't agree, then the coupon would be void as it was due to expire on Oct 31st. ("Sorry we can't extend it due to our commitment with other program.") I e-mailed Fin back and said that this was unreasonable and that I had to work on Monday and also that we had already agreed to November 9th. Fin replied to this e-mail and stated that someone could come to do the job on November 2nd. Assuming I would agree to this time, he attached a waiver for me to sign in advance of the work. Here is an excerpt of the waiver: I understand that Fin, the Company he/she works for disclaims any liability to damage caused to the Stone & Grout as a result of the treatment. I acknowledge that Amexcana Enterprises Inc DBA Fin Wood Stone Tile Care, Associate/ the Technicians has given no guarantees in relation to a successful result and has made it clear that in giving authorization I assume any and all risks. I took this to read that I as the customer would assume all risks, and if there was a bad result, I had no recourse. I declined this offer, as given my experience thus far, I did not feel I could trust this business and had serious doubts that there would be a satisfactory outcome. I was also willing to accept the loss of the coupon value. In sum, my concerns with this business are as follows-The owner mislabelled the product as granite. I subsequently confirmed with another reputable business that it was in fact marble. The owner's inability to commit to a length of time to complete the job-I could have a less than satisfactory result in 3hrs or a completed result in 6. For this particular job I was looking at 750.00 for the FULL restoration! The owner making suggestions that he could cheat on the work performed. The owner requesting that the customer pays for parking (I think as a business expense and especially with the high hourly change, the owner could afford to pay the 1.00 per hour in my visitor parking). The owner agreeing to a tentative service date, then changing it to another date with less than 2 days notice and stating that the coupon would be voided/canceled if the customer could not honor this date. Finally, the owner providing a service with no guarantee or warranty and in which the customer assumes all risk and liability. The irony is that one of the parameters for complaining via the BBB (the owner is accredited) is the Guaranty/Warranty, and this business provides neither. I ended up going to another company (Marblelife) which completed the job in less than 2 hours, with a beautiful result and I might add, to a shine.
