After completing a run on the South Norfolk Jordan Bridge (pause, check out my review for that bridge ) I called Hall's Shoe Repair to inquire if they could fix an old pair of running shoes. The gentleman on the line answered my questions and told me to come on in. With the old shoes in the trunk, I zoomed over to Ghent and rushed to the repair shop. The running shoes were 2 years old, and a portion of the fabric had torn from the sole. I wanted to give these shoes a little more life. He told me that he could easily repair the shoe. The price $10-not bad! I reached to whip out my card and he apologized that he didn't tell me they only accept cash. Because he forgot to tell me, he allowed me to pay when I picked up the shoe. They normally take payment when you drop off the shoe(s). Definitely giving him some kudos for that. 2 days later, I arrived with cash in hand and the shoe looks great! The service is fast & efficient. If you need shoe repairs, this is the place to go. Friendly service! I visited to have a belt resized...I'd purchased an expensive leather belt and didn't want to hack extra holes into it myself. Brought my boots in because the right foot zipper kept splitting from the bottom-up. The pull broke off from trying to get it zippered-down after it split so I could get the boot off. Before bringing them in, my husband tried to fix the zipper, twice, and it failed. He even removed the cross-tab that holds the teeth in place at the bottom, cut one tooth out and re-aligned them, replaced bottom tab...still a fail. I TOLD the gentleman this, expecting they'd have to put a new zipper in. He told me they could repair it and to pick them up in two days. 15 bucks ( a real deal, I thought) and 2 days later my boots were ready. He handed me the boots in their brown paper bag with order# affixed. I took them out to examine, all they did was replace the pull and "tighten" some of the teeth-which (remember) my husband ALREADY tried. I saw that the bottom cross-tab was sticking out, like it had pulled away from the zipper. I showed it to him and he took the boot back, pounded it down and handed it back. I asked if he was sure the boots were actually "fixed". He just said "we've never had a problem before". I was skeptical, but took my boots home. The next time I wore them the same thing happened. I called just before closing to inquire about a repair the next day. They were very nice in answering my questions, and did not sound annoyed that it was almost closing time. I arrived the next day, to have a couple of holes put into a leather belt. Unfortunately I had to leave and come back because it is cash only, and pay up front. So, I left, came back with cash, and they took care of it in less than five minutes! I just picked up two pair of shoes that NOTHING was done to them. The bottom was dirty as I handed to the owner and her excuse for not cleaning was "you are going to walk on them anyway why do you think I should bother to clean the bottom of your shoes." Originally I came in and said: I want my shoes to be cleaned and polished," she quoted me a price, requested cash only payment in advance, which I did....and here we are...a total rip off. A great little cobbler's shop like you'd expect to find tucked away in a big city. I've had them replace soles, heels, sueded a pair of shoes, and also reconditioned and cleaned a leather handbag for my wife. Even if you didn't ask them to polish your shoes when they did a repair, they did it any way. A real old-school asset to the area. read more

I took a very expensive pair of Christian Louboutin patent leather shoes to Hall's Shoe Repair to get the soles redone and some extra padding put in by the toe area...when I picked up my shoes there was a scratch on the patent leather and a slight tear...I pointed the damages out to Mr. Hall...he basically shrugged his shoulders and said how do I know his shop was responsible for the damages to my shoes....being the OCD person that I am I took pictures of what my shoes looked liked when I dropped them off to his business for repairs and showed them to Mr. Hall. Mr. Hall continued to stand his ground that the damages made to my shoes were not an issue or concern of his. My feelings are/were very hurt because I trusted him to provide a service that I paid him for; I didn't expect him to damage my shoes nonetheless treat me rude as well as question my integrity. The convenience of Hall's to my house was the initial driving motivation to drop off three pairs of heels for repair. The shop is situated right next to Kelly's Tavern on Colley. I warn you, the smell of shoe polish and cigarette smoke just about knocked the wind out of me, but I persevered. For $45 I had the heel caps replaced on two pairs and the soles replaced on one pair of rather expensive heels. I got them back 3 days later in pristine condition, and $45 was a small price to pay compared to what I would've paid to buy new. The counter sign indicates that a deposit may be necessary, but I wasn't asked to put one down. Hall's only takes check or cash, so be prepared. read more

Tried to bring in a shoe to be fixed but they said that it was beyond repair =( O well. It's a small store close by the Naro and it says "Shoe Repair." Best to park along the street. I am not happy with the service and will never take any shoes there again. I not only had bad service but the lady working there was very rude :( Initially I took my ballroom dance shoes to Hall's to have the top lift repaired because it had broken off the heel. The inside nail had to be removed and a new top lift had to be nailed on. It should have been fairly easy to do but when I picked them I was told that they couldn't be repaired so they glued the existing top lift on the heel. The next time I wore them it broke again so I took them to the shop recommended by my dance studio and he repaired them properly and securely. He said that the previous cobbler should have been able to do the work as it was very straightforward. read more

This is the worst shoe repair service I've ever experienced. I dropped off two brand new pairs of boots never before worn to have them stretched. When I picked them up, they looked like they had been worn for a few seasons. The leather looked as though it had been exposed to water and then dried out, scratch marks all over the boots with the finish completely worn away on one toe of a boot. I called the owner to ask him what they had done to my boots and he didn't think that just stretching shoes would cause any damage and I could bring them back to have him look at them. He was not offering up any apologies nor did he really seem to care. Do not take your shoes to these people because once the damage has been done there is no turning back. read more

From the first time we used their services to today (4/30/16), we have always been completely satisfied. Here's why I realllly like Hall's Shoe Repair: I took in a pair of well-worn Ecco shoes, and--after Mr. Hall examined the hole in the leather and the wear...and saw they were Eccos--he asked me, "...sure, I could work on these, but did you buy these at Nordstrom's?" I realized I had, and said "yes." They were at least a couple of years old. He said, "take 'em to Nordstroms, then. They should exchange them for you for a new pair. If they don't, I can take care of them for you." I'm sure many shoe repair businesses would either overlook that, or take them anyway just for the business. He did not, and additionally he had reminded me of Nordstroms fantastic return policy (so Nordstroms gets 5 stars, too). So, I got a new pair of $145.00 Ecco shoes! This is the best cobbler around!!! Everything I bring to them comes back shiny and almost new. They have fixed everything from torn pumps (that I love and wore out) to resoling men's dress shoes. I have used them for many years, so they have repaired MANY shoes. I tried another cobbler in Hampton, since I moved there 8 years ago, but will never go back to the Hampton guy.
