The food is great here. They have cold-cut sandwiches, burgers, wings, etc. I would personally recommend the buffalo wings and the blazing panini. Service is also quick and friendly. They recently had some renovations done and it is clean and modern. Love this place used to come here precovid and this was my first time back since. The food sandwiches are fresh and made to order. This is such a great local sandwich spot that does it right. I highly recommend the Bethany but they seriously can make almost any combination of sandwich you want. I got a grilled chicken panini with avocado and ranch dressing, devoured that amazing sandwich. There's no seating so you must grab and go ( I usually eat in military park). Mr. Kim is also very personable and friendly. Enjoy this place as much as I do. Cheers. read more

Great small place for a basic delicious sandwich at a decent price. That's hard to find these days. All the cold cuts are Boars Head! Yummy Snacks are available. They include Salami, Cheese, Hummus and Cookies. The owner is very pleasant and accommodating. Haven't decided on a favorite sandwich yet. All the sandwiches are very good. So far, the sandwiches I've had are Michael's BLT which includes avocado on toasted rye, Alfred's which includes tuna, bacon, tomato and Swiss (substituted mozzarella instead), Roast beef and provolone and Grilled provolone with bacon. SO my friend has a sandwich named after her. It's called the "VERONICA (on a Portuguese roll)". It's delishhhhhhhh....that's if you like spicy *roar*. VERONICA includes the following: Order it with the Portuguese roll (always taste fresh) Cajon turkey Pepper jack cheese jalopena peppers lettuce tomato onions mayo oil and vinegar (always gotta have this) Buy some kettle jalopena chips and WOW like I said spicy baby!!! Surprisingly pleasant experience at Halsey Deli Not many food places open in this area at 8 AM on a weekday. Staff was friendly and gave food suggestions. The breakfast croissant and home fries were great. The owner is known to everyone in the area and has a great reputation. They sold about 10 coffees in the 20 minutes I was there getting food and eating. Had to stand at a counter and eat but that was not the stores fault. They usually have chairs and table. Decent place to grab some grub. Their sandwiches are alright, it does the job when I'm real hungry. It's nice to have a deli in the neighborhood and I try to support a local business. They can get a bit of a crowd but the clerks tend to keep up with customers. Always personable and they seem to be hard workers. I could use a bit more meat on the sandwiches. The price is good but I need a larger portion. What can I say, big guys need big meals! Do enjoy having breakfast there as well with a cup of coffee. And personally any place serving fresh breads is a real winner in my book. read more

If I could give it 0 stars I absolutely would. And I'm not one give a bad review. But they had no regard for customer service at all. Ordered through Uber eats for 6 people with a total of $87. thanks to the incompetency, we did not get our order and instead got a wrong order. When calling to try and get it situated, was told it had nothing to do on their end and we had to call Uber eats and get it situated. NEGATIVE. Because who gave the the Uber driver the WRONG ORDER. there was no attempt to even try to right their wrong. read more

Often SUPER busy as I work in the Downtown Newark District, what a great deli for some good grub!!! I am a HUGE sandwich lover and the selections seem endless. I don't eat lots of red meat so I enjoy the many other selections offered like the salmon burger, tuna sandwiches and usually for breakfast, I order turkey bacon blt on rye with a little mayo and honey mustard and home fries. I like sandwiches and there is a Boar's Head. logo that drew me into here been here a couple of times there is a Great ordering system here Tell them what you want they make it "KAPISH? The staff is friendly but come on they seem to skip out on the meat i got a Pepper Turkey and all the trimming it was lacking some pzazz maybe its because they didn't use oil on vinegar. I just couldn't put my hands on it. The Sandwich was just to small I'm not a round roll guy.. put my sandwich on a hoagie or just leave it alone But for the are its nice to see a deli ready to serve so that is a definite plus. read more

Look off in the distance... It's Halsey Deli.... First a quick overview. "Halsey" is conveniently located near the corporate side of Newark. They provide soup, sandwiches, sodas, chips, burgers, snacks, and even subs at reasonable and fair price. Most people who come are regulars. Those who are not usually become regulars. And while the sandwiches are not as crazy good as Hobby's (Newark) or Katz's(SOHO-ish) they also won't cost you 12 to 15 dollars a pop. Onwards towards the review. When I first came to this establishment I was confused. How do I order? There were a mish mash of people idling about making conversation with the establishments personnel and others just waiting patiently. The first thing to know is just walk right up and order. What should you order? IDK... These guys have every sandwich that was ever fathomed. All the meats. All the cheeses.... Ridiculous. Alll black bear all the time. The Buffalo Chicken Wrap is of particular note. As well as the turkey Italian sub. The salads (potato/macaroni) were nothing special and the pickles are a no no. but the basics of the sandwich are there. Good bread. Good meat. good lord. lets eat. (That was a little joke voila!) The rest of the stuff you get with a sandwich is numerous. Lots of sodas lots of chips. And as I said before... With so many people coming here EVERY DAY for lunch.... You better have some serious variety. OVERALL the food is good and you really cant go wrong with any sandwich. The Staff is also extremely friendly. The guy running the place oversees the details and is beyond friendly and accommodating. He even bring his family in to help out once and a while. The sandwich maker guys are cool to and are willing to help out when help is needed.... For example... You forgot to order that with mustard just yell over put mustard on that.... and bam he will probably "put mustard on that". Loose organization and accommodating customer service pull this place up by the boot heals. The price is nothing to sneer at either. Usually keeping it below 8! BELOW 8! I ordered the "Halsey Panini" which consisted of turkey, provolone, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, mayo, and thousand island dressing...and it was just awesome! Why 5 stars for a sandwich place in Newark? VALUE! Great sandwich (4 stars), great price (5 stars), great service (5 stars and more!). Everything that I want for a lunch because when I leave... I am always happier. Sandwiches: Solid quality and great variety. They go the extra mile to make the sandwich exactly the way you want. For me - there were too many choices so I asked the guy (Jesus) "make me what you'd want to eat today". And perfecto... a hot chicken-steak sandwich that hit the spot. For the past 2 weeks - I just ask him what's good and he makes it! Plus good chip selection (Dirty Chips!) and snacks and other convenience store snacks if you want them. Price: Less than $8.00... yes! Fresh made sandwich and fast... you cannot beat this. Every item is priced to be fair and practical. Customer Service: Service is always friendly provided by everyone. Starting w/ Mr. Kim... he's low key and service friendly. (BTW - I left my wallet at the office and he says "no problem.. just come back another day and pay me back" which I did. How awesome is that???). Jesus has a great attitude and I swear... his purpose behind the counter is to make the best sandwich ever for every customer. To that I say "amen"! Horrible place to buy anything. Opposite to what some may think, the owner is NOT FRIENDLY. I went in here today 9/12/16 to buy a $1 NJ Lottery ticket, not only did I kindly wait 12 minutes in line, with no one ahead of me, I was also practically thrown out of the deli because I wanted to purchase the ticket. If the machine is NOT WORKING, maybe a sign that reads-so would help your customers..."down" is not enough information/clarification for a customer to take a hint and politely leave. Also, maybe I wanted to get myself a sandwich after actually being told the machine was NOT WORKING, but instead I was spoken to both aggressively, by the female owner I assume, and rudely, by the male owner with all of the photos at the front posing with Newark politicians and famous people. I will never step foot in here again, and if you are smart and prefer great customer service---not being rushed, or yelled at for a simple lottery ticket, go somewhere else because HALSEY STREET and Downtown Newark is very large and has many sandwich and lottery ticket retailers. This deli ain't it. I wish I could give them no stars for the way I was disrespected earlier this morning.
