Best LBS in the Garden State. Give Jason and his crew your business!

They keep on filtering my review, so I'm posting it again. I'll keep on doing it. They are rip off when it comes to cycle repairs . I was told $50 dollar to replace the brakes on my kid's bike which was high price to begin with, but I just wanted the bike ready so that it can be used over the weekend. These people kept my bike at their store for more than 10 days and then called me and said that i'm good to go, so I thought they fixed the brakes, but they told me that they couldn't fix/replace the brakes and i can back padle to stop the bike, which I knew already. Not sure how it was ready to go? When I went to pickup the bike they asked $15 for labour and I told them you didn't fix the bike. You just took off brakes from my bike and why I should pay, becuase brakes are still not fixed. Please note it was never disclosed or agreed upon that they would charge me labour whether they fix the bike or not. Deal was to replace the brakes when I gave them my bike. On top of that this $15 amout was more than what was quoted as 'labour' to replace the brakes. They were adament so i told them that I'll pay the money if they put the brake back to my bike the way it was earlier , because brakes were working little bit (not perfect for a kid) and they said they can't as they broke the wire. Then all of a sudden the owner came and told me that he doesn't want to argue and threw my bike out of his store saying that my bike is a garbage ($150 bike). They have two big issues- 1) They are a rip off 2) They don't know how to treat a customer. You would be better off avoiding them. Not sure how they can run a business with this attitude towards customers, especially towards the customers in South Brunswick where they are running this business. I've always had a great customer experience at this LBS. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. They don't try to up sell you at all. Typically you get a good turnaround on repairs. Jay and his staff at Halters are nothing short of fantastic. They are incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. They are all cyclists so they know what works- and more importantly, what doesn't. Jay is super-dedicated to his customers and getting more people riding bikes. Apparently his mirror sales skills aren't up to par, but considering all he has done in the community and at Six Mile I'm willing to give him a pass. read more

I've known Jason at Halter's for a long time and have bought several bikes there, including my current fabulous Cannondale Hi-Mod Evo Di2. I needed to replace my rear tire so I purchased a Vittoria Pave and started to put it on yesterday (Saturday) afternoon. I've replaced many tires but I just couldn't get the last little bit over the rim. I ran over to Halter's 30 minutes before they were closing. They had quite a few customers around but they took my wheel in the back (they couldn't do the last bit with their fingers either) and got it on my wheel. In the mean time, I decided to ask Jason about my Giro shoes, which fit me great in the winter time with thicker socks but are a bit loose now since I've used them several years and in the summer I use thinner socks. I asked if I should get another smaller pair of shoes or purchase an insert. He said wait a few minutes and grabbed some card board and proceeded to create a pair of card board inserts (covered in plastic tape to keep the moisture out) and put them in my shoes. He also noticed that my cleats where too warn so he went ahead and put new cleats on for me. I rode the next day with the shoes and the card board inserts, they worked perfectly. No more foot movement. For winter, I just take the card board out. I have found their recommendations on all of the tiny details about biking right on target. After living and racing in almost every major city on the eastern seaboard, I never imagined the best bike shop I'd come across would be in Skillman, NJ, but that's the truth. The greater Princeton area has plenty of bike shops and I've been to every single one of them, but Halter's stands head and shoulders above them all. The quality of their staff, merchandise, and customer service are superb. Jason, the owner, is a great guy who's extremely passionate about cycling. His vast knowledge of the industry spans from fatbikes to e-bikes to road racing bikes. He is also, along with Don, a superb bike fitter. The mechanics, Cody and Trip, are absolute experts. They're also down to earth, honest, and always willing to share their knowledge. I think what makes this shop so great is that every single staff member really cares. They really care about cycling. Just returned from picking up our new Cannondale bikes. We ordered them thru Jason and the helpful staff there. You just couldn't have asked for better service than Jason and the crew at Halter's provided. Jason came outside with my wife and I, made sure we selected the right bicycles, helped us with professional sizing, made some outstanding suggestions & tips, then even helped us re-mount our bike rack properly and helped secure our new bikes. In 2010 Jason put a Salsa Vaya together for me so I could commute to work. At the time I was working at Avaya's Basking Ridge office but went to work at Seagate later that year in Scotts Valley, CA. I've ridden thousands of miles on that bike and it has only needed minor adjustments, brake pads, chains, and tires over the years. Now that I'm retired in Colorado I ride the Vaya on brevets and it's still going strong. A great thing Jason did for me during his excellent bike fit was to adjust the angle on my bike shoes using shims which completely eliminated some knee pain I had been experiencing. Not only is Jason an excellent bike builder but he may be an even better bike fitter who pays attention to every single detail so you'll be the most comfortable on your bike. If I lived in New Jersey again, Jason would be my go to mechanic, salesman, and fit specialist. I never had a better fit before or since. read more

Halters has been consistently excellent. I have bought several bikes there, including bikes for my kids, been fitted for a road bike, and have bought a lot of clothes/accessories there as well. They are always helpful, and never talk down to me (even though I'm sure I ask stupid questions!) One of my favorite things is how they treat my son. I think he was 4 when we bought his first bike there, and they always talked directly to him, asking what he wanted, and making sure he knew his opinion mattered. These guys are the best around. They are all very knowledgeable and set you up with exactly what you need and don't try to up sell you something you don't need. I bought 3 bikes from them over the years. I went over the handlebars on my road bike and bent my wheel I went in thinking I was going to need a new wheelset and Jay Hooked me up he was able to repair my wheel I was in and out he also adjusted my derailer was good to go. I'm excited they are moving to the Montgomery Shoprite center it's closer to me I'll be seeing more of them. read more

Halter's is easily the best bike shop I've ever been to. Through the years I've been to many other shops in the Princeton area (Bernie's, Knapps, Kopps, etc.) as well as in NYC and none come close. Good inventory - but it's the customer service and mechanics that really make it stand out. Also, J is excellent at bike fittings- I've had three bikes fitted and afterwards all have been substantial improvements (including my lingering knee pain alleviated). One last note- J is also the trail master @ 6 mile run- so yet another reason to support this shop. read more

I was having trouble finding a bike that fit my needs until I went to Halter's. Jason had several to compare, and took the time to find the one that fit me the best. Where it still wasn't exactly what I wanted, he made the changes I requested to make it even better. I went to Halters twice for servicing my bike and both the times I was not satisfied with the bike service nor the customer service. I read online that its always advisable to go to a LBS to get your new bike checked and serviced as they will ensure that everything works smoothly and well. I read in various forums that these LBS would usually charge anywhere from $20 to $40 for these kinds of check So the first time I got a mountain bike and after using it for around a month, I decided to go to Halters cycle to follow the advice to get it checked by a LBS. The representative said that they have a $35 service which will take care of all those things. I did tell him that its a new bike and there is nothing to be serviced, but I just wanted to make sure everything works properly. As I was a novice, I did not ride the bike after the service and just took it home. I did not ride the bike for around a month after that because I had to travel immediately. When I did ride the bike, I noticed that the gears do not shift properly. The main reason for me to go to Halters was to make the shifting smooth and it had become worse. This year I got a road bike from another store and I decided to again give Halters a chance when I had issues with my gears. It was grinding when shifting and again I was told the service will take care of it. When I went to pick up my bike, I was chaged $13 extra and when I asked why, I was told they had to realign my computer cables (the console for the speedometer) because it was interferring with other cables. Not sure why it would because it was working fine before I got it there and all cables were tied in properly with the fork. Also what is there in a bike for a computer cable to interfere with brake cable? there are no electronic or mechanical parts to interfere .. I noticed what they had done is twist the computer cable over the brake cable and they charged me $13 for just that !!! Anyway I did not want to argue on it and I paid the charges. I took the bike for a test drive this time and I again noticed that the front gears (3 of them) would not shift properly and so I went back to him to get it aligned. The technician said that he did not see any issue and I showed it to him how it grinds and does not shift. Then he reluctantly made some adjustments saying that if he tries to fix the issue, the shifter will not be smooth. When I asked, why it would not smooth, he said that all the bikes he sold has only 2 front gears and when there are 3 gears, the moment is not smooth and it will grind. After fixing it again, I took another ride and its still not smooth especially while shifting the front ones. Also when you are on the topmost on the front one and lower most of the back one, the chain grids so badly that I have move up the gears. I saw no point in going back to him to get it fixed. In short, I wasted another $50 and got no benefits. I will never visit that store again and will search for another one. I saw one in priceton and will go there and check them out. I would NOT recommend anyone to use this store for any service work unless you have money to spend and not get any work done. If only the technicians were good at their work and atleast do the work for what they are paid for. A standard car service cost less than a bike service and here they do not even get any work done. What exactly is done for a $35 sercvice where the gears are the only complex area where they would actually need to work on. The rest is all just a matter or lubricating. As my bike was new, there was no tightening required nor was there any need to do any oiling. read more

My husband were in the market for either hybrid or mountain bikes, and were told that we should include Halter's Cycle in the bike shops we were visiting, and to ask for Jay by name. We were told that he was very knowledgeable, and the store carried many good brands. Wow. (and not in a good way.) We went up to the counter and said that we were in the market for some bikes, and a young woman offered to help us. She took us to the front of the store, asked us we wanted to spend, and we said that we had already looked at a pair of Specialized hybirds which we liked a lot, but we were willing to be convinced that maybe one of the brands they carry might be a better choice for us. In other words, we are expecting a sales pitch, and that's fine! We're here to buy but we don't know exactly what we want, and we need help finding just the right bikes for us. In fact, that's pretty much what I said to this very pleasant young woman. she shrugged her shoulders and said "well, it's really just a matter of preference." Seeing that this wasn't going anywhere, I said that we had actually been told to ask for Jay; would it be possible to speak with him? Sure! she said. I think she was just as happy not to have to try to explain the differences among the bikes. A few minutes later Jay walks up, and my husband introduces himself, shakes his hand, and says "_________ and ___________ said we should ask for you." (two of our friends; whose names are being withheld for their privacy.) Now....get ready.....these are his actual words: "Those two guys?! they're the biggest a*holes I have ever met" (only he used the actual word, right in front of me.) Now I'm no prude, but is that how you greet your customers? We proceeded to explain that we had seen some Specialized bikes at Knapps Cycle in Lawrenceville (very nice people, by the way - and very helpful) and that we were here to see some other brands. He showed us a few bikes, and one mountain bike was on sale. My husband took it into the parking lot to test ride it, and Jay and I continued to speak in the store. He said it was originally $2,800, and it was now $1,000 off. I said "Okay, so that's $1,800 each, or $3,600 for two bikes. We can do that." He quickly replied "No! it's $2,000!" I replied ".....but you just said that the bike was originally twenty eight hundred dollars and it's now a thousand off - that would make it eighteen hundred dollars...." He replied very emphatically "I'm not giving away the store here!! So if that's the game you want to play, I'm not playing it." he paused for a second, then said "you know what?? Go back to Knapps!!!" I was dumbstruck. What did I do?? Just about now my husband came back in from the parking lot, and Jay walked right up to him and said "I'm not getting along with your wife, and she said she wants to go back to Knapps." The funny thing is, he liked the bike, and we probably would have bought those two bikes if Jay had been even MINIMALLY polite. Instead, we went to Jay's Cycle in Princeton and bought two Treks - and had a very pleasant experience from beginning to end. You know....all he had to say was something like "I'm sorry, I know I just told you that they were a thousand dollars off, but I misspoke - they are $800 off. Unfortunately I really can't discount them any further." Instead, he left us with a clear understanding of who the real a*hole was. Very un-happy ex-customer. I bought a mirror for my wife, asked if I could return it if she didn't like it. The answer was yes you can. Well she didn't like it, and when I went to return it, un opened, I found I could only get store credit. And an attitude that I should have known. If I had know that I wouldn't have made the purchase. The attitude was the same I felt the other times I went there. Never again, you lost a customer. And you can be sure I will tell anybody that asks about this shop to stay away. read more

Absolutely love Jason and the crew at Halters. I've been seriously cycling for about 15 years - road and triathlon - and in that time, living across several states, have had to build up relationships with many local bike shops. Since I moved to Princeton NJ, I've done the same with Halters - and now I think they are my favorite bike shop in America! They always give good, knowledgeable advice, without being "bike snob" about it (i.e. I feel very comfortable asking the "dumb questions" knowing they will be patient and give me the right answers in language i can understand ;-). They really do put the customer first as well. I had some specific issues with my bike frame and they dealt with the manufacturer for me, and really helped me out. Also - a shout out for Jason's bike fits too. He changed a bunch of stuff with my set up (seat height, cleat settings, biomechanic tips, etc, etc) and i've shaved minutes of my tri times this year by cycling faster while conserving energy. 5 stars is the least they deserve. read more

I love Halter's. My husband and I deal with them exclusively. They have always gone above and beyond for us and we really appreciate that. As a matter of fact, a few weeks ago we were shopping for gear for the Five Boro Bike Tour. There was rain predicted so we were trying to be prepared. Even though they have all of their summer things out, they went in the back and took out boxes of winter gloves for us to look through since that's what we needed. I purchased a bicycle pump here. It doesn't work on my bike and I'm disappointed with the purchase. I called this store several times about the pump and they told me I could bring it in at any time and they would gladly exchange it. I brought the pump in and the arrogant owner wouldn't exchange the pump and wasted my time. I went to Walmart and bought a much less expensive pump which works much better, and now I want my money back, for the pump, for the inconvenience, for the lies, for the lack of customer service. read more
