Visiting this location for the first time . I'm always a big fan of REI brand of products . I always visit their Paramus location .. customer service is one of the biggest plus points for REI ! These guys always smile and help you as much as they can . I signed up for their lifetime membership and never regretted doing it . Location wise it is amazing . Very close to other businesses . I always buy north face and other products here .z they have sale during thanksgiving time and some of the adidas tshirts are affordable. Otherwise it's expensive . Prices were high but the no questions asked returns offsets that. One minor privacy niggle is that by the end of the transaction at the cashier the person behind me knew my name, phone number and address. I'd be happier if they could ask you to confirm the details on a screen or scan off the app on my iPhone. read more

I remain a fan of this company and will continue to shop here as needed, but at this point online might be a better choice. Allow me to explain.... First off, and I may have mentioned in my previous review, the layout of this store was poorly thought out, and no changes have been made since it opened. Although they sell bikes here, I have to believe they sell much more clothing and footwear. But you are forced to walk through the bikes to get to the apparel. If you are shopping for a bike that is ok, and you will encounter employees to help. That seems to be where customer service ends. I have yet to be greeted, acknowledged or asked if I needed help finding something elsewhere in the store. On my recent visit I crossed paths with about 3 employees before checking out. None said hi, and 2 were in bike dept conversing with each other. This scenario is not new to this location. The other major factor to downgrading this business is the way they have handled the shoe section. They now limit the amount of people allowed into this area. They have displays blocking the entire front, and when you look for a way to enter, you see there are 2 choices, a small entrance on the women's and another on the men's side. With signs stating you have to be granted access by employees on duty, and obviously they are helping customers. I get social distancing, but I literally had to look at the shoe selection from 25 feet away(maybe this was an opportunity to try out their sweet binoculars?) Part of my reason for visiting was to see the choices but I didn't have time to wait for an appointment to do so. This company has mask requirements still in place, and I have no issue with that. 96% of customers were complying with it( don't even get me started on the 2 Patriots who felt they were above the policy) The young woman who rang me out was friendly at least, so the visit ended on a positive note. If you are closer to the Marlton location, you'd be better off shopping there. read more

One hundred thirty two dollars. That's how much they charged just to replace one spoke on my bike and tires. One hundred thirty two dollars. Yet after this extremely costly repair after which one would expect some sort of luxurious ride, the spoke snapped again, less than 20 miles later. Less than 20 miles later, $132 dollars down the drain. The bike shop told us "they charge for their experienced skillset" when they told us the ridiculous price. The "experienced skillset" was on clear display just 2 days later when another spoke snapped as if the "amazing" bike shop just decided to super glue, or even just tape the spoke on. Pathetic service, and would definitely recommend avoiding this bike shop at all costs. read more

I've went out of my way to go and visit one of these REI stores to look for new hybrid bike and some new cycling gear. After checking out some of the bikes and with help of staff, i ended up purchasing a new bike from here. Excellent selection of high quality merchandise. Camping, hiking, warm weather and cold weather sporting goods for the outdoorsman. Large selection of clothing, jackets and coats for outdoor activities. The Staff was very friendly and helpful. Each person was able to help me for what I was looking for, and had exceptional customer service. And if it's important to you, they're also being very cautious in regards to Covid safety. I was very pleased with my visit, looking forward to go back again! REI membership club for a small fee really pays off. As do member coupons. Heads up: Depends on what time of day you visit, Expect a line outside the store as they could only allow a limited amount of people inside the store at once. It was a 10 minute wait for me. Hand sanitizes, gloves and masks provided at the entrance for customers. read more

This location is phenomenal. I called around to other REI locations further north in NJ closer to where I live and none of them would help me reinstall the rear half of my Yakima roof rack that had come loose (installed by a different non-REI business in Idaho). I eventually called this REI Princeton location and Ian (?) was extremely helpful over the phone, and scheduled an appointment for me. Upon arrival, Gina helped me out. My car was especially difficult to re-install the rack to. She tried multiple times, double-checked Yakima's technical notes, double-checked the settings and literally tried everything she could to help. She was ultimately unsuccessful on this first visit, but she asked me to return the next day and promised that with help from other staff it would be resolved, and it was. Turns out, it was a two-person job due to the way it installs on my vehicle under very high tension, and this was verified when I saw how difficult it was even for two people who know what they're doing to get it installed properly. I literally never would have been able to do this myself, even with my wife's help. After all of the time and energy they invested, literally hours, what they charged me for the service is too embarrassing to even write here, but it was the cherry on top of an already incredible experience. Don't go anywhere else for anything, just come here and know you'll be taken care of no matter what. I will happily make the drive from Hoboken to come back here if I ever need anything else from REI. read more

I've visited this store since the first day it opened. I'm a co-op member and it's like a second home. The staff are people who know outdoors gear and have lots of personal knowledge to give advice. I just did an exchange for some trail running shoes I bought on line in October beyond the 90 day return policies of most online retailers. As a member they just took the gear, checked it was unused and gave me a full refund I all in 3 minutes with smiles and no hassle. Lots of top quality gear and advice. This is a serious store for serious people who are spending serious money to outfit themselves for some serious leisure (or in the parlance of the times, full immersion experiential activities.) I scored a pair of amazing hiking boots for twice what I wanted to spend but knew I made the right call. I freely admit there's a pretty steep intimidation factor even when browsing but the staff are all knowledgeable and patient without a whiff of condescension. Maybe, I've just become used to customer service that no longer rises above a blank stare. REI is highly recommended. read more

The store is great and most staff is friendly, resourceful, and helpful. However, at the Princeton store, beware of Greg who is sometimes at the ski/bike service area. Twice over the last couple years, I have had unpleasant interactions with him. Each time he has tried to sell me all types of wax and services for my skis which seemed impractical, beyond the basic required for safety and performance for my use. Even the expert shops at the big commercial ski resorts do not try to sell (or recommend) to me all these services! Each time I get the sense he is trying to take advantage of someone less knowledgeable rather than recommend services most practical to them. read more

I stopped in at this REI to get some travel gear before a recent trip to Iceland. I went to get heavy jackets, backpacks and waterproof footwear for myself and 2 of my kids. There was lots of parking available very close to the store and the staff was pleasant as soon as I opened the door. In fact, I got both a "Hey, how you doing" and "Can I help you with anything" within my first 20 seconds in the store, which is nice. It was also clear by the employees demeanor that everyone on the floor was ready to help, and I definitely appreciated the customer service forward attitude. Anyway, I like to browse, so passed on the offers of help and started to check things out. As you may suspect, they carry alot of high quality items here, from all of the premier brands you'd expect to see at a high end outdoor shop. But quality and merchandise pedigree aside, the prices are simply astronomical. There were absolutely no deals, no sales, no markdowns...nothing. In a weird way it looked and felt like a travel gear museum rather than a vibrant store. Just not much in the way of buying opportunities here, for me at least. With a multitude of online shopping options, I am not clear who goes here and pays top dollar for this stuff. Rich fancy folks I guess. As for me, I left empty handed because I'm definitely not paying $150 for a pair of boots that's listed for $90 on Amazon. In fact, I wound up getting everything I needed on Amazon for a far better price than REI could offer. REI is definitely a cool spot for outdoor and travel related items, but unless you need it same day or are looking for a hard to find item, I wouldn't recommend the place. Great place to have everything you need to explore our beautiful Earth! My husband and I were in the need for trekking poles, and we came to get more information/test them out. Our REI sales person was great! She helped us figure out the height we need, the material (e.g. carbon vs aluminum), if we wanted standard height or fixed height. I know i know, a lot of trekking pole jargon but SO helpful for what we need to know for our hiking trip to the Grand Canyon. They have everything you need, from trail sneakers, to hydration vests, to portable water filters. I highly recommend. The only thing I noticed they didn't have was anything Salomon brand. read more

This place has everything and anything you may need to go camping or do any outdoor activities that involve an overnight stay. Lots of cool gadgets and tools to help with being in the wilderness. I went because i was going tubbing at Delaware river and we got everything we needed including these cool water shoes that have last over a year at this point and are still in mint condition. I also got a water proof bag that did the job and some rope and clips to tie tubes together. Overall good shopping experience , i got a lot of help from an employee there who was super knowledgeable and kind. read more

I called about a particular item and said I needed a medium or large, and needed to try them on. I was assured there was ample stock. When I arrived at the store 45 minutes later I found exactly one, which turned out not to be the size I need. When I asked about the discrepancy, the woman to whom I spoke on the phone said "oh, I didn't listen to what you said about sizes." I find it stupefying that a business would have people answering the phone who don't listen. read more

REI is a great store but based on my experience on 6/23 in the Princeton store they are really not doing curbside pickup well and it's not safe. I would advice anyone to stay away from this store during COVID. They have "curbside pickup" but they don't clearly explain the expectations. If you go to the curb you get an ear full about the fire marshall saying that's not ok. If you park and walk to the curb they'll literally not even come out of the store. Worst though, when I finally did park and wait in my car, they refused to put a bike in my trunk; I had to do it myself with the manager crowding my space. Until they get better at communicating expectations and adhering to social distancing stay away from this store! read more

If you really like Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops for all the outdoor gear they carry in a huge warehouse environment, but don't spend that much time in the guns & ammo department, then REI is the place for you. It offers the same over-the-top sensation of sports, camping, biking equipment found in those other places, but with much more emphasis on healthy living in the great outdoors. What's even better, is that it has been operated as a co-op since 1938, so for $20 you can be a member for life, get a 10% annual dividend on your purchases, and be privy to special activities and sales. All that, with that thrill of being in an incredible toy store for weekend warriors. Can't even imagine what it would be like to work there, and really know how to use all the things they offer. If you spend over $100 on your first visit, you also get a $20 gift card - a sweet 20% discount! I was there to pick up a backpack for my soon to be Eagle Scout, as he no longer fits within the frame of his old one. He had already selected the one he wanted and it was on "hold" waiting for me to purchase it and bring it home. Glad he appreciates the "frugal" in the Scout Oath, as this was one of the least expensive bags, and was adjustable as he continues to grow. Same thing for a bike helmet. His old one no longer contained his skull, so I picked out the biggest one they had. Fit me well, and seems to cover him comfortably, too. Not cheap by any means at $200 for the backpack and another bill for the head protection, but at least we know they are quality materials and manufacture, and that we have $50 coming back to us through gift card and dividend. I will be sure to take advantage of that. Walking around this superstore in the Mercer Mall, Lawrenceville, NJ, was like being a kid in a toy store. Beautiful camping, hiking, biking, kayaking, canoeing gear and clothing all around and temptingly displayed like a siren's song to Ulysses. The staff is knowledgeable about their equipment, and take time to explain the pros/cons of all the options. Talk about dream jobs....! read more

This is such a dangerous place to be if you love outdoorsy activities but also happen to be trying to save money. I've been here multiple times to browse, but over the last couple months, finally caved in. Thus far, the damage dealt to my bank account includes a mountain biking helmet, a hydration pack, and climbing shoes. If I were rolling in money, I'd consider buying everything in the world here. :D but alas! Camping, hiking, cycling, running, climbing, yoga, kayaking, standup paddleboarding...you name it, they'll probably have it (and if not, you can get it shipped to the store for free)! Every experience I've had here has been really pleasant. The staff is super knowledgeable and were able to answer the questions I had. They're friendly and helpful, without being intrusive. $20 will get you a lifetime REI membership, which will get you 10% back on any full-priced item purchases you make by way of an annual dividend at the end of the year. There are semi-frequent sales and I'm also hoping for another garage sale again soon! ...Not that I need another excuse to be spending money or anything. read more

I've been visiting this REI store since it first opened. It's a great store for everything outdoors from bikes, kayaks, SUP, camping gear to clothing and accessories. Some of the items are priced high, but I've got some great deals off the clearance racks. We bought our first SUP here last year when we were first getting into the sport. A SUP is a costly purchase. REI's return policy is unbelievable. The sales agent told us if for any reason we did not like the SUP, any reason, we had up to one year to return it. I've never heard of such a return policy! It's awesome. Of course, we love our SUP and kept it, but it was good to know that if the sport wasn't for us they would take back that board; no questions asked! Another great program this store offers is a Membership. For a one-time, $20 fee you become a member for life. Members get a 10% dividend back on all purchases made during the year, as well as special offers and sales. I highly recommend this program if you plan on making any purchases at this store. As a guy from the Pacific Northwest, and an REI member for over 20 years, it can truthfully be said that I'm very brand loyal to the co-op. I like the stores, and I like their corporate philosophy. I always stop in at an REI when I'm visiting family out west, and before this location opened, I had to drive to Plymouth Meeting or, more recently, take the train downtown to the big location in lower Manhattan. However, that doesn't mean that I couldn't be caught in the Eastern Mountain Sports store at Marketfair (which has recently moved into the big locaton formerly occupied by Barnes and Nobel) when I needed something and didn't want to travel for it. Both companies carry top brand names, and both companies also have their own private label brands. I have a gut feeling that the REI brand has a better quality, but that could very well be my regional loyalty talking. You can get good help at both stores, and most often from people who know the product because they use what they sell. The Princeton REI is well laid out, it's big enough to carry just about anything you'd really want to get your hands on, and the staff is top notch. I'd say that their selection of big dollar items like bikes and boats might be a little smaller than others I've seen, but if it is, it's not by much. Long term, the dividend you get at REI from your membership, the classes that are available each month (many of them free), the depth of product available both in store and via their huge on-line business (we'll order it for you!), and a wider breadth of differnet items really sets REI apart from the competitors. Buying power works for the consumer's interest when it comes to REI. The only downside to this store is the actual location, because it's just nasty getting back on Route 1 when there's heavy traffic. You can get around it by driving thru the parking lot, but then you're going to go by Joe Canal's, and maybe you can just drive by there without stopping in, but I sure can't. read more

Really nice staff from the front to the back who are all very knowledgeable about sneakers and what I need for my pain. They have a great return policy if your footwear doesn't work for you. I bought a pair of Hoka's that were so expensive. After one month, my feet were killing me. At two months, I couldn't bear to even put them on. I was able to return them and get Brooks instead. I'm very happy and so are my feet. Great staff, store and policy. I'll always buy from here because of how well they treated me. read more

I love this store. The employees are so knowledgeable and helpful. I had extensive questions about stoves and dry sacks and John was very patient with me and gave me real honest advice. Adventure equipment tends to be more expensive but the employees have helpful tips of how you can go on your adventure cheaper. They have a rewards program, you sign up once for $20 but get discounts the rest of your life. It really is worth it. They also have 'garage sale' days. It is second hand equipment and no promise what they will have but it is worth checking out. Returns are incredibly easy. read more

A large,and well organized premium outdoor store featuring all the big names in outdoor gear....but at a price. This location is quite a bit larger and rather more comprehensive that other REI's I've visited in the past,with a huge camping,hiking and biking and everything outdoors selection. Service is low keyed but professional as the employees all have their specialties and is well versed in their particular gear. A great place to stock up before that outdoor adventure but you may have to sell the Prius to afford it. read more

I called in to see if they had rock climbing shoes in my size and harnesses. The person on the phone said what size are you and told me that they had plenty of shoes in my size. I went in 20 minutes later and they had zero shoes in my size and the shelves are half empty. With stocking issues I really recommend people go to Amazon. It's a shame that they couldn't help me and they were pretty unapologetic of that lie. read more

I love REI in general but this one is fairly small compared to others I've been to. It also seems to be sort of disorganized in the clothing section. Some brands you find all over the place. I also wish they had a larger selection on women's pants. For example the prana pants only had the thin summer breathable kind and leggings and not the jean/khaki kind. You'd also find patagonia and prana mixed in other brands sections. What this store is lacking is some organization and variety of inventory. But you can order online for store pickup if need be. read more

Every time I go into this store I've had a great experience and really puts my faith back into the customer service, which many big corporations lack. I've been prepping for a trip on the John Muir Trail and was told I could have someone help me out with a backpack fitting, for free. So I went last night around 8:30pm, right before it closed. Luckily not many people were there so there was someone who was able to help me out from start to finish. The guy (I think his name was Paul) was really enthusiastic about my gear, which really pumped me up even more for my trip, and was really helpful in adjusting my gear to fit my body and testing it. I took a women's bicycle flat tire repair class at REI King of Prussia Mall. I'm sure the Princeton location has similar classes. If they don't, they ought to introduce it. Not all women who ride know how to change a flat, especially a rear flat. I certainly am from that camp and ride with the constant fear of being stranded while riding alone. It was the most engaging and enlightening class I have ever attended. Lindsey, our instructor, was patient, thorough and very knowledgeable. Right from learning how to read the information on the tire and tube to the actual mechanics of fixing a flat and re-assembly, the class was 24 carat gold! We got a few goodies to take home for the bike and a chock full of self confidence to ride on our own. Highly recommended. read more
