The massive concrete structures are incredibly interesting to walk through. You can explore the old rooms, passageways, stairs, and gun emplacements while imagining what this place must have been like when soldiers were stationed here protecting the mouth of the Columbia River. What made the experience especially memorable for us was learning about Battery Russell's connection to World War II. In June 1942, a Japanese submarine surfaced offshore and fired shells toward Fort Stevens. Knowing that history while standing among these old military structures gave our visit an entirely different perspective. I also appreciated being able to explore at our own pace. There are plenty of opportunities for photos, and the weathered concrete and surrounding forest make the area incredibly atmospheric. Battery Russell is a great addition to a visit to Fort Stevens State Park, especially if you're already road-tripping along the northern Oregon Coast. I highly recommend taking some time to stop, walk around, read about the history, and explore. It's an unusual and memorable piece of Oregon history that I'm really glad we didn't skip!

The bathrooms and showers were also better than other places we have stayed at. All of the staff were amazing and fun to talk with. Check in was very easy. The store had a lot to offer from groceries, gifts and souvenirs, and camping needs to make your stay more comfortable. There were tent sites, rv sites with full hookup, cabins with and without bathrooms. We went a few days after Labor Day so it was not very crowded (bonus!)

That said, there were several issues that made our stay disappointing. The campground is very spread out, making group camping difficult, and the bathrooms are so far from some campsites that late-night trips are unrealistic. Adding portable restrooms in between would make a huge difference. The showers in Comfort Station 2 also had a noticeable mildew smell. The biggest concern was how our family was treated. One guest repeatedly yelled at our children while they were riding scooters, and when the adults calmly addressed the situation, it quickly escalated into hostility. A staff member encouraged us to file a complaint, but another employee told us we probably shouldn't because they might remove both parties, or side with the other guest. They even stated that if police were called, we'd likely be the ones going to jail because we're Black. That comment alone made us feel unsupported and unsafe. Finally, we were uncomfortable seeing a decorative noose hanging in the activity center. Combined with the cabin numbering ("KK") and our experience, it created an atmosphere that felt deeply unsettling. This campground has a lot of potential, but our experience left us feeling unwelcome. One K away from KKK!

We only stayed one night, but this seems to be well-managed, safe and clean. Also, this was a reasonably priced option and with availability over a holiday weekend to boot! We usually stay here when visiting Heather and her amazing staff at Wandering Goose Restaurant located across the street at the Tokeland Hotel. Our recent stay we met Mike their new onsite grounds keeper, what a great guy. He stopped mowing and greeted us immediately upon our arrival. After some great conversation he showed us to our side and continued his mowing. This guy is a work horse but never too busy to answer questions or do a favor. Mike was mowing another area, and our camping neighbors asked if he would mow and edge their area since they were having company come visit. Mike didn't hesitate too immediately do this for them. I have to say the park has never looked better. There is a clubhouse of sorts, but it needs some TLC.
