Driving through Fayetteville, I had to stop at Hammontree's Grilled Cheese. I've seen this place all over the internet for years, so it finally made the list. First impressions were a bit mixed. The restaurant was quiet, but the floors were noticeably dirty, and the restrooms were just okay. Nothing outrageously bad, but definitely not as clean as I would expect for such a slow night. The service was probably the biggest disappointment. Our server wasn't rude, but she wasn't particularly welcoming either. She took our order, dropped off the food, and brought the check without ever really checking back in. There were only three occupied tables in the restaurant with three servers working, so it wasn't like they were overwhelmed. One thing that really stood out was that every employee in the dining room except the bartender had headphones either in their ears or hanging around their necks. It gave the impression that customer service wasn't much of a priority. I started by ordering a sweet tea, only to be told they don't have it because they brew their tea in-house and "can't add sugar." That explanation seemed a little odd. I switched to a Coke instead, which turned out to be one of the flattest fountain drinks I've had in a long time. After a few sips, I gave up and just drank water. Now for the part that really matters: the food. We ordered the Kids Rookie grilled cheese and the Big Dog from the kids' menu, along with the Cheebacca and the Brie's Company. We also couldn't leave without trying the Blueberry Grilled Cheese for dessert. The only real miss on the food side was the chips. They were stale, cold, and almost rubbery. Honestly, they were some of the worst house chips you could possibly have. The sandwiches deserve a much better side, or they'd honestly be better off taking the chips off the menu altogether. The kids' meals were an incredible value at only $5 each. My 5-year-old couldn't decide between a grilled cheese and a hot dog, so he got both. The Big Dog was excellent--hot, juicy, and grilled just long enough to get those perfect char marks. The Rookie was exactly what you'd want for a picky eater: simple, cheesy, and well made. The Cheebacca ($12) was packed with sharp white cheddar, house cheese, bacon, pulled pork, grilled onions, and a garlic cilantro sauce on sourdough. Every ingredient complemented the next, and nothing overpowered the sandwich. Easily one I'd order again. The Brie's Company ($12) was the surprise of the meal. Grilled apples, Brie, Gouda, caramelized onions, and fig jam on sourdough sounded adventurous, but it absolutely worked. Sweet, savory, rich, and balanced all at once. If you're willing to step outside the traditional grilled cheese, this one is worth trying. Then came dessert. The Blueberry Grilled Cheese ($7.25) combines mascarpone, cream cheese, fresh blueberries, and honey between slices of grilled pound cake. It sounds unusual, but somehow it's fantastic. It's one of those desserts that makes you question why you've never had it before. Awkwardly delicious in the best possible way, and absolutely worth ordering. Overall, Hammontree's is a place where the kitchen is doing almost everything right while the front of house leaves quite a bit to be desired. Cleaner dining areas, better service, and replacing those terrible chips would easily push this into 4 star territory. As it stands, the food absolutely lives up to the hype, but the overall experience holds it back. If you're passing through Fayetteville, it's still worth stopping in. Just skip the chips, order one of the specialty grilled cheeses, and don't leave without trying the dessert. read more

Don't skip this next time you're in Fayetteville. Despite my friend being gluten-free, she was able to find some great gluten-free bread and man, did we enjoy the sandwiches!!! I got the artichoke bacon grilled cheese and it was creamy and rich and delicious and we shared the Fries with a bunch of toppings. They were delicious. This april was my first time to try this restaurant. Ate here twice this during this visit. The sandwiches are very good. I had a basic grilled cheese with turkey the first time. excellent. Tried the pulled pork on second visit. again, excellent. Toasty bread, very melted cheese. Everything was fresh and i like the kettle chips they serve with the sandwich. This is a real hidden Jen in Fayetteville. They do basically one thing - grilled cheese for grown ups. These are grilled cheese of the highest level. Doesn't matter if you are doing one of their house creations or your build your own. Fresh flavorful cheese and meats, craft sauce and buttery bread toasted to perfection. Great service, Belinda took great care of us and made sure we had everything we needed for a great meal. Small inside dining are with limited outdoor seating as well. Terrific sandwiches, OMG. Their gourmet sandwiches are creamy and cheesy, their French onion soup had GREAT flavor, and they had lots of drink specials. Our only complaint was the server was SO softspoken and the acoustics were so wacky that we had to ask him to repeat himself after every sentence, but he was so sweet I don't want to call him out on it. This was not my mom's grilled cheese. The monte cristo was amazing and the crayfish bisque was filling with the right about of heat. My wife's spinach gorgonzola was the perfect dipping soup for her grilled cheese as well. Service was quick and friendly with great suggestions! Definitely a place to try if you haven't. read more

Gave me and my girlfriend some of the worst food poisoning of our lives, will not be back.

I had such an unfortunate time here this past Saturday. Visiting my best friend for the first time, I was very excited! This place is what all her friends recommended! The service was horrendous. Our young male server was absolutely absent from our table. It would be more understanding if it was busy, yet at 5pm there wasn't any crowd nor wait for a table. We got 3 visits within our 45 minutes there. Our drinks, our food, and our bill which we had to flag him down for. It was especially upsetting to see tables that were sat after us, with bigger parties, get attentive service. I sadly really liked my meal, as I plan to avoid here in my future visits of Fayetteville regardless of the recommendations. read more

We went during the lunch rush & it took about 30 mins to grab a table for 3. The hostess Violet was extremely sweet, bubbly & accommodating. Keaton, our server was extremely helpful & accommodating to all our questions as first-time guests. I was able to order a half sandwich w/a side of potatoe salad instead of chips! Perfect! If you want to go lighter, don't pass on ordering the Hummus! Oh my gosh - edamame, toasted sesame seeds & topped with sesame oil! I got the brie grilled cheese with the fig jam. Savory & tasty at the same time! Also, I got a cup of their tomato soup, which went perfectly with the entire meal. My daughter had the Chewbacca, which she enjoyed thoroughly! I also ordered their strawberry cider & enjoyed it to the very last drop. Location is very accessible & parking is ample. They have several tables set up inside & everything, including the bar, is part of the waiting list when they are overly busy! Owing we storms had snowed in a lot of places and I called them with 20 min to closing time. The staff were so wonderful making a tasty Bri and fig jam magical sandwich, and a classic sharp cheddar on sourdough, we even got fried artichoke hearts. Went to pick it up and they have a really great vibe in the restaurant, but I ordered to go. They had the food packed up, and ready to go. Friendly, and fun and I wish I was in town longer. Hmmmmm, no it is not your standard kids grilled cheese. It is definitely an adult grilled cheese but it was missing the golden, crisp on the bread that makes a grilled cheese sandwich so special. I was with some friends having lunch. We ordered pretty simple sandwiches and the loaded sweet potato fries as an appetizer. Took like what seemed like forever for our sandwiches to come out and we hadn't received our appetizer once our sandwiches finally came.
