The pool was green with algae and unsafe for swimming! I notified the desk and they told me it would be cleaned by the next day. The next morning it was still green but lighter. By that evening I asked if the pool was safe for swimming and was told yes. We went out to the pool and there were three people at a table that had been drinking. They had a dog running loose all over the fenced pool area and it charged the gate and started barking viciously. It had no leash evidently. One of them picked up the dog and held it. We went in the gate and went to the other end of the pool. They were loud and using cuss words, and they also put the dog back down! Needless to say, we were unable to stay at the pool. 3. At breakfast the morning we were leaving, I wanted to have a cup of strong coffee to help me with the 6 to 7 hr. drive home. The coffee dispenser was empty. There was an employee emptying the trash and I asked if there might be coffee soon. She responded that she was busy ... "having to clean up all of this mess" and that she would get coffee when she was done. I asked her three times during 10 minute intervals for 30 minutes if there was going to be any coffee. She replied that she was the only one there, she had to clean up all this mess, waving her hands around like the whole dining room as she was sitting in a chair doing nothing. I said that I really would have appreciated coffee with breakfast but she never made an attempt to go make any. I asked the front desk about it and she said it takes a while for the coffee to prove and I told her it had been 30+ minutes. Also, my bill was one amount, and I was charged nearly $60.00 more. When I called to inquire what the EXTRA UNKNOWN charge was for, I was told it was for "incidentals" which I had never heard of before. Nor was it discussed when I made the booking or when I checked in. It looks like I'm going to have to dispute the charge through my credit card in order to get my incidental charge back. I will not pay it! I DO NOT APPRECIATE BAIT AND SWITCH. There's no customer service at this location. I will never stay here or any other Marriott again. They evidently have a new policy... No guests or customer service... I have been online all day trying to clear this up and the website will completely wipe out everything I've typed and I have to start over. Seriously frustrated and unhappy.

They seemed very apologetic about it and made it right. The breakfast was superb as the breakfast attendant America was so kind and greeted us. The breakfast was warm and fresh as it was constantly restocked. I was impressed because I usually eat breakfast a bit late and the breakfast items are usually out by the time I go eat but this time to my pleasant surprise it was all stocked in this hotel. The lady named Maria was also very kind when we had questions on our way to breakfast. I'd definitely come back!!

Only complaints are that when we got there they had given our room away (2 queens) so we settled for a king and pullout but they did give us a discount for accommodation. I did overhear this happening to another guest to so just be aware of that. When cleaning came to our room while we were gone they took our trash but didn't vacuum the crumbs on the floor and just left them, although they did a good job when we asked them ourselves to come clean. But full spread includes a couple of omelette options, oatmeal and cereal and fruit with juice options. I recommend staying on the fourth floor away from elevator if sensitive to noise. I had originally wanted to stay at Hampton Inn but I booked the one in Bay City, MICHIGAN and when I realized it and tried to book Bat City, TX they were sold out. Plus I heard Hampton Inn wasn't that great, they had roaches, their breakfast was trash and they have A/C issues. Housekeeping is by request only. They are quick and efficient. Customer service was friendly for the most part. BIG shout out to Marla and Beatrice. They made my extended stay enjoyable. One hotel receptionist I don't know her name kind of made my complaint about the hotel guest in the room above mine feel invalid. If someone is walking heavy to the point it awakens you from your sleep, then I feel like that is valid enough to call the front desk and have them call that room to ask them to be mindful of their walking and walk softer. She gave me push back asking well if they aren't jumping and just walking I can't do anything about that. I stayed for six weeks. I've only complained about a hotel guest or guests three times that stayed above me. So don't give me that if they're just walking I can't do anything about that. It takes a lot for me to be awakened: I keep a cold room, keep the curtains closed, have a fan on and a sound machine. For those who like to be cold this hotel is for you. I kept my room between 58-60 degrees. Very pleasant especially for that Texas heat. So that was appreciated. Two washers and two dryers on third floor only. Be careful because my quarter got stuck in the dryer. They refunded my money but still annoying. They do offer a wash and fold service which is extremely convenient. You drop off your clothes by 9AM and it will be back by 3PM. They charge your room and a one time bag fee which I think is like $3 and you get to keep the bag. I did see roaches. Four total. One the FIRST day I moved in which was alarming because the room should be thoroughly cleaned so I guess the housekeepers missed it when vacuuming. It was by the window next to the A/C unit. I asked the front desk receptionist who came and got it and apologized. She also said they recently fumigated. The second one was dead in the entry way. The third one was alive in the bathroom. It was a small and paper thin one. Fourth one was dead in the bathroom. I'm someone who likes to sleep in the dark but after seeing from the first day there were roaches I kept the TV on around the clock on mute. TV is OK. LG i think 39 inches if that. To turn it on is a pain (power then options then HDMI then something else before you get to live TV). Not many options. I don't think they had a premium channel like HBO. No BET or VH1 or MTV either if I remember correctly. I also saw two dead ones in the lobby area when you first enter the hotel. For Halloween they set out some candy and had some decorations set up. They have a small market with ice cream, water, I think sodas and some medicines and chips. Ice machine is on first floor. Sometimes I had to ask for different sheets, towels or pillowcases because they had stains on them that didn't wash out. The couch and office chair didn't seem trustworthy enough to sit on. Shower pressure varied too. Some days the hot water would last awhile and the pressure would sustain. Other days pressure would be a gentle cascade and the hot water would be fleeting even if you turned the knob all the way to the left. The shower door at least in my room was hard to slide from both sides. Not sure if it needed WD40 or something but I felt it was going to break with me having to apply force to slide it back and get in.

Galveston itself offers so much to do--we especially loved spending time on The Strand and exploring the area. Unfortunately, the biggest issue is the management, which significantly impacts the overall experience. The park manager is unapproachable and runs the campground in a way that feels more focused on control and extra charges than guest satisfaction. Fees are added for things like early arrival, and communication often feels excessive and negative rather than helpful. While guests receive multiple daily texts about activities, we also received messages about things like dog waste in washing machines and stolen cleaning wipes--issues that could have been handled more professionally. There were also ongoing maintenance concerns both years we stayed. We experienced multiple days without water due to plumbing issues, and during our second year, the park was down to a single bathroom because of structural damage. We were told portable restrooms were coming, but they never arrived. Activities were amazing our first year, but the second year saw frequent cancellations. Even simple guest comfort requests--like putting down pavilion sides to block strong wind--were denied, despite those same features being used for staff events. Another concern is how complaints are handled. When an inappropriate interaction with a staff member was reported, there was no management available, and no follow-up from the manager afterward. That lack of accountability was disappointing. It's also worth noting that feedback appears to be filtered internally, meaning corporate oversight may not be getting the full picture. We also noticed an increase in police and emergency presence during our second stay, along with a shift in the overall campground atmosphere. To be clear, this could be one of the best campgrounds in the area--it has all the right ingredients. They have a swimming pool, bar, restaurant, and lounge, from what I could tell. We didn't stay long since we needed to get back to the house to decorate. When we entered the restaurant, AFTER registering my dog, the lady in the restaurant had to call for approval. She was a little annoyed and seemed to not trust me when I told her I already registered my dog. Keep in mind, you cannot get passed the gate without stopping by the office because you have to have a code. Once we got passed the service dog "issue", the service was good. We started with the ceviche. It was very tasty. My friend and I split the shrimp platter. Terrific shrimp and onion rings! The serving is perfect for two to split. The atmosphere was a little bland, so I took off one star. Plus, I was still embarrassed it was an ordeal with my dog. I hate confrontation. I felt a place like this (especially for what we spent for the beach house) would be a little high scale of professionalism and decor. The house itself was welcoming and comfortable from the moment we walked in and the view of the water was a constant treat. We didn't understand how much the close proximity to the beach would shape our time at the house. Since it was so easy to get to the beach and into the water, we relaxed in the surf much more than we expected to. The key words there are "relaxed...more than we expected"! Our first night, as we settled in and noticed the unexpected amenities, we remarked to ourselves, "They thought of everything!" Our older daughter- who is an avid reader- loved the little touches like the reading lights connected to the bunk beds. Frankly, we are not used to being so well taken care of! Our family got to create some easy and meaningful memories during our time at the house. From dinner and games around the family-sized table to quiet moments of reading and reflection on the Adirondack-type chairs on the porches, there are many moments that we will look back on as special times in our lives together as a family. In the background of each of those moments was the thoughtfulness of the hosts who put the house together in such a way that we simply just enjoyed ourselves! We would definitely love to stay at Holy Mackerel again and we highly recommend the house for anyone who wants to enjoy simple comforts and drink deeply of the culture of the Gulf coast.

Convenient to Houston and Galveston. Nearby Lake Jackson is brimming with places to shop, eat and street names to amuse you.
