The pools are amazing! The deepest is 15ft in the dive area. Customer service could improve with the employees. The employees are not friendly at all but otherwise great place to swim.

I've been to YMCAs across the U.S. and Canada and this is tied with only one for as my favorite…read moreYMCA! Besides the location and staff, the best part about it for me is the dry sauna and the stationary bicycles facing the windows. I'm also super stoked that it became 24 hours starting this month/April...at least the main workout area is. The only cons I've experienced so far are: 1. The showers were only cold water at the time I tried them - but, in all fairness, it was end of a Sunday and lots of kids there. 2. There is only one Hip Abduction & Adduction Machine/Dual Inner/Outer Thigh Machine and someone is always using it. Despite being at the gym for hours, I've never seen it open so I have to use my thigh bands at home. There really needs to be two of them. Many of the machines around it go unused so they could easily be swapped out for a 2nd Dual thigh machine. Otherwise, this place is great and I feel safe when I'm there. Since it is such a nice YMCA, I can see why it gets so busy at certain times. I adjust my workout time when I can to avoid the crowds, but I understand that not everyone can do that.

I work with them individually well also in a group to be able to get them to swim safely. The changing rooms were very nice and quite clean and private, which was really great as well. Everyone was super nice and super welcoming and we really had a great time taking some lessons there. I would join the YMCA if I didn't already belong to another gym though, because it looks like it has a heck of a lot of stuff. Even a climbing wall! And lots of classes and activities too! Might have to look into that sometime soon!

What an amazing grand opening!…read more The school exceeded all our expectations. We were thrilled with the convenient location after traveling much farther for three other swim schools for our four year old. Not only was the staff incredibly welcoming but my son had his most successful swim lesson ever. He has done two YMCA classes and one at Tide Swimming which was a long drive but this setup was by far the most organized we have seen which makes a huge difference with so many families and kids around. The smaller lanes turned out to be perfect for him especially since he has been hesitant about getting water on his face. To our surprise he went in without his goggles which was a huge milestone. The platforms in the pool allowed him to feel safe and secure and even though I was not right next to him I felt completely at ease. The instructors knew exactly how to help him shake off any nerves and quickly got him smiling again. I could clearly see how much more fun he had here than at any other lesson. From the warm welcome to the little fish toy he took home the experience was fantastic from start to finish. Their website is also easy to use and makes it simple to find information and get started. We are now planning to enroll our nineteen month old daughter who was practically begging to get in the water. Honestly we had started to think swim lessons were not making much progress but today completely changed our minds. I can truly see our son starting to swim on his own here which is something I never saw at the other places. We could not imagine a better first day and are so excited to continue our journey with Goldfish Swim School.

Instructors were great with my 2 year old, he was smiling at the end of his first class. Amazingly…read moreclean facility and welcoming for children. Lots of parking and flexibility to change class dates in the app. So happy we found Goldfish swim school in Chesapeake!

BMAC as it is most affectionately known, is an indoor swimming pool ran by the city of Newport…read moreNews. It offers more than just a pool in the building as I will further go into. The day to day operation has a staff of city of NN employees. The location of the facility sets on the Newport News/Hampton border and is off the Mercury/Jefferson corridor close to the James River Bridge. The parking lot can easily accommodate many visitors, however when large swim meets are taking place it fills. The staff take great strides to keep the building clean and well maintained. The guards are all Red Cross certified and in my experience very competent and care about the safety of those that participant in their programs. The pool itself is a 50 meter competition pool with movable bulk heads for conversion to 25 yards (basically splitting the 50 in half). The pool for Short Course season (25 yards) keeps the bulkhead in the middle. The deck around pool has three rows of spectator seating. Visitors are NOT allowed to bring in food, or swim back packs inside the aquatic area. The pool features two 3 meter diving boards. Restrooms and locker rooms are available. As well deck showers are outside the locker rooms. Two year around clubs utilize the pool. The Coastguards Blue Devils and the SEVA Seahawks. At the times these clubs would conduct practice part of the pool would be closed off, but lanes would be made available for pass members etc. The building also offers a gym with a full basketball court, a daycare, multi-pourpose rooms for dance, yoga, etc. There is a room that offers a kitchen with sink, stove and refrigerator. A large under cover outside area features three basketball courts. You can rent out the multi-purpose rooms and pool for parties. Daily passes ($3-$5), punch cards ($19-$24), annual and collegiate passes ($50-$70) are available for both Newport News and non residents at an up charge. All of these prices in my experience are very reasonable. The facility itself is in the red every year. The city of NN subsidizes to a great degree which is wonderful for those that utilize this very nice aquatic facility. It would be hard to believe if you are a Newport News, or Hampton resident that you do not know about this facility. This is a major asset to not only the Newport News, but to Hampton Roads. This Aquatic Center offers the ONLY 50 meter pool used for Long Course competition. I encourage you to check it out if this is something that you, or family can utilize.
