Pricey and delicious but totally worth it. Ate here right before the opera that my child took me to and it was such a wonderful time.

    Fried calamari was yummy!

Hanna Japan is a great place to celebrate a birthday. Why? Because if you come in within the week of your birthday your dinner is free with a party of 4 or more. Came to celebrate my mom's birthday and I haven't been in years. I was pleasantly pleased to see that they haven't lost their touch. This spacious restaurant has cozy vibes and water views everywhere. All of our food was absolutely delicious and fresh. Our server and the staff were very attentive and kind. Our chef that did our meal Teppanyaki style was creative and very talented with his knives and with preparing our meal. He was very entertaining. I highly recommend making reservations as we went on a Monday night and it was pouring rain and thought that the place would be empty, but no the place was packed with other families, celebrating birthdays. They also have a location in Dublin, but I've never been there, but I can highly recommend the location in Berkeley.

I love this location, it's so beautiful off the water with great views of the bay! Both the food and service were amazing!!

My wife and I are here yesterday. The food was delicious. I ordered Filet Mignon and Salmon with shrimp fried rice and my wife ordered the Waygu Korean BBQ and Shrimp with shrimp fried rice. Everything was amazingly good. Our chef Wilfred (I think that is his name).. was super entertaining. Overall, we definitely make this our new hibachi fav spot.

First time here I was invited to come here for a bday dinner Dinner was nice our chef was awesome nice perk that he spoke Spanish Chef did some cool tricks and was very personable Venue is clean and nicely decorated Parking is easy to find but the parking lot is gravel and kinda rocky I arrived early to avoid traffic and I hung out at the bar. There is NO HAPPY HOUR HERE but at any rate the Asian pear martinis are great Bartender is friendly Bar is kinda limited when it comes to tequilas and cognacs Food is cool Obviously made to order Prices are reasonable It was a nice dinner for my friends son and he enjoyed it thoroughly

Broooo it's so good and staff oof so nice bro 10/10 would recommend gave me an amazing first experience recommend

Arrived at approximately 5pm (made an online reservation) on Easter's day. Oddly was not busy. We were quickly seated, service was excellent. I like how they were very mindful of the wait time in between courses. As for appetizer we ordered the Chicken Gyoza Potstickers (8/10) we also ordered chicken, steak and shrimp along with chicken friend rice and a variety of beverages. Food was cooked perfectly and seasoned well. Beverages were pretty good, the Asian Pear Martini and the Pina Colada was our favorite. Overall great first time experience and highly recommend.

I'm sorry but this will be my last review for this establishment as I won't be coming here ever again. It wasn't so much that the food was bad or the lack of parking... it was the extreme arrogance of the maître D when we asked him a simple question about the alleged points we were to be credited for our meal tonight! To tell us we needed to give them our phone number prior to paying the bill(which we did when we arrived ) and then his smug response when we asked when to expect to points to be applied to our account which was "I have no idea!" I mean why bother offering this promotion if the staff doesn't know how it works let alone the very unprofessional extremely discourteous attitude, and response from the young man behind the counter.... I mean he couldn't bother to even ask his manager let alone provide a means for followup if he was the manager.... I come here fairly regularly and have for years. Well you have just lost a repeat customer as you don't "dismiss" a customer just because you don't know the answer! Moreover, it is my understanding that Benihana has purchased the old Chevy's building down the road in Emeryville, which will be steep competition for this place if they don't address employee issues. By the way.. They will be open early part of 2026 for anybody who wants to go there for a better known experience and variety of FRESH Japanese food. Hana Japan has tried to revamp this place with a new menu and new items on the menu, but I'm sorry. Ultimately it boils down to Service as it. just as one little thing has ruined an entire experience and turn repeat customers from coming back!I guess they don't care that we always drop in excess of $200 for dinner, drink and appetizer. P.S. I only gave them a rating of one because it wouldn't let me give them a zero! The prices are too high here to be treated like an and expendable customer!

Hibachi is always fun! It's a pretty nice location right on the Berkeley Marina and was pretty busy. I do think they don't do as many tricks as say Benihana but maybe that's completely dependent on your chef? Or maybe cause we didn't have any kids at our table so that toned it down? Not super sure, but would have appreciated more of a show tbh. The food was alright, nothing spectacular but I definitely did eat it all!

The entire experience should be an hour and thirty minutes.

I waited until morning to write this review so that I could be thoughtful in how I describe our experience. We live in Humboldt County and came to the city to celebrate our daughter's 12th birthday. We were looking for a hotel with an indoor pool. Surprisingly, there are not a lot in the area. We chose to stay at the hotel in the Berkeley Marina because it had an indoor pool and because of the Teppanyaki restaurant nearby. We were delighted when we realized that that you actually get a free meal on your birthday! On the drive down I made reservations for 7:00. This was a little late for our family (we also have a 9 year old), but we were traveling and wanted to make sure that we would be able to make it. When we walked in to the restaurant I used the bathroom. It was pretty dingy, not the cleanest and smelled like pee. I was surprised since these types of restaurants are usually more upscale. We were early so we sat in the front waiting area which I think also smelled kind of like urine. I assured myself that it was just coming from the nearby bathroom. Either way, it's still pretty gross. We were seated on time, just a few minutes after 7:00. We were seated with one other couple at one table. The table next to us was filled a few minutes later and a third table was filled about ten minutes after us. Our table was the first to be seated. The table right next to us seemed to have a much more attentive server that came over right away and got them drinks. It was a while before we had waters and were asked to order. The next hour and a half progressed in this same manner. We watched the table right next to us get served beverages and appetizers while we waited patiently. Remember, we were seated at 7:00. At 7:30 a chef arrived and began cooking for the table next to us. We watched the chef prepare entire meals for the table right next to us while we waited patiently sitting around an empty grill with empty water glasses. The third table that was seated after us also had a chef preparing their food. Around 7:50 our server came out and said that our chef was running behind so they would bring us some potstickers. That was a nice gesture even though we didn't want them. Our son had ordered one of the few things on the menu he was willing to eat and was waiting as patiently as he could for it to be cooked for him. The next time we saw our server was at 8:20 when she came to bring water. At this point I asked her how much longer it might be until someone began cooking our food that we had ordered an hour earlier. She said that it would be at least another 20 minutes. TWENTY MINUTES before they even arrived. Remember, we were seated at 7:00 and she was saying that they wouldn't start cooking until 8:40. Also remember that the two tables next to us were seated after us and their chefs were finishing up preparing their meals. We had just watched the entire show from behind. At this point, we told the sever that we couldn't wait and would have to leave. Our nine year old was starting to fall apart. He had waited so patiently for so long and was so hungry. We simply had to go. She said something about how the chef that just cooked in front of us said that he could start cooking for us immediately once he finished and we declined. She tried to justify something about how the reservation time isn't when they start cooking and sometimes you have to wait. We understand and respect that, but waiting for an hour and forty minutes while the tables seated after you get their food feels unreasonable. When I made the reservation online, it says that your table reservation is reserved for an hour and half. That is because that's how long the whole experience should take. That is not how long you should wait to begin the dinner show. The staff was apologetic and didn't try to charge us for our soup and salad. We appreciated that but left hungry and disappointed with the entire situation. I am still surprised that they didn't do anything more to make it right. It was our daughter's birthday and we spent the evening sitting at an empty grill with strangers watching a chef from behind prepare food for people that had been seated after us. Luckily, we had plenty of road trip snacks in our hotel room and just walked back to our room and ate those. So I guess the silver lining is that we saved $150.

Ask the Community - Hana Japan Steak & Seafood

Do they value the groupon vouchers limit 2 to use?

You can only use one per visit ! I tried and found that out

Do they serve shrimp complimentary with your hibachi order as an appetizer (like Benihana does)?

No. You only receive complimentary hibachi vegetables, soup, and salad prior to your meal. You can request to get shrimp fried rice as an upgrade if you do not want regular fried rice (fried rice without any meat)

When reserving a table do you get a regular table or chef table?

I'm pretty sure all tables are "chef tables" except in the bar area.

    Are they checking vaccination cards?

Not when I went in November this year.

All important question, Do they put bacon in their rice?

No. There is no meat in the fried rice unless you order chicken fried rice

What is the maximum number of adults they sit around a teppan table?

There are 8 seats per chef/grill.

Are they not opened for lunch anymore?

Only lag was when we ordered 2 nigiri at the end and it took a really long time but I think the sushi chefs lost the order or something. Delicious sukiyaki, chicken skewers, cold tofu, salmon rolls, hamachi sashimi, Ikura and uni, tuna and Ikura nigiri, and hamachi Kama (not sure why they charge $21 and then $7 for a large when it is two small dollars that came out though). Decent wine selection - Chardonnay was good. Restaurant itself is fairly loud, especially with a baby that kept crying. But it might have been crying because it was loud. Owners should consider the Constellation System by Meyer Sound to make the dining experience more enjoyable for patrons. As this is a longtime bastion of Japanese food in the Bay, they should really invest in the sound portion of their restaurant. Prices have gone up since the last time I was here but it's not totally unreasonable. Good quality food and service. Love this place.

Now, we get to dine here as a family, and that nostalgic treat feels all the more satisfying. Food (4 stars) + Ribeye teriyaki was a hit--tender, cooked to perfection, and the kids loved it! + Lamb chop was a standout--one piece, but perfectly grilled, juicy, and tender. I could eat 2 of these with a bowl of rice and it would be a hearty meal! + Chicken karaage was solid--crispy, good portion, and a nice appetizer. It's basically a Japanese version of chicken strips that is way better than nuggets. + Salmon sashimi for the kids never disappoints. ~ Chirashi bowl was fresh and filling, though standard compared to other spots. There was a lot of rice which if we knew that we probably would've skipped the extra bowl I ordered to eat with my lamb chops. For the somewhat premium pricing, I wish they provided fresh chopped wasabi. ~ Stuffed mushroom skewer was just okay--tasty but nothing special. I guess for mushrooms it does taste kinda like a chicken meatball which could be a good thing. Service/Ambiance (4 stars) + Attentive and thoughtful service, especially accommodating a broken foot. They let my family wait at the bar instead of standing. + Ambiance is that classic Japanese vibe, busy but comfortable. Maybe not high-end, but definitely a place that feels special--especially now that we can afford it!

The staff member refused to do it because they didn't want empty seats between us and another party that was already seated. They actually had to get a manager involved so I could sit where I wanted to. 2. We had a coupon for a free appetizer, up to $12 value. The only restriction was that it couldn't be combined with other offers. Nothing on the coupon said anything about restrictions for Valentine's Day. Staff said they weren't sure and would check, but did NOT say we couldn't use it when they took the order, so we ordered an appetizer. And then at the end of the meal, they refused to honor the coupon. 3. None of the single teppanyaki dishes were available; you could only get combo dishes (e.g. chicken & filet mignon). That was a shocker to us because although we love habachi, we've always found Benihana to be unbearably slow to get fed. So we had to find out for ourselves. Food 4.5/5: for $15.95 you get soup, vegetables habachi rice, and a chicken or shrimp, steak for a few dollars extra. Everything that was cooked on the habachi grill was perfectly cooked, well seasoned and the steak was doneness was the way I wanted. I loved the grill flavor with the dipping sauces. The fried rice was a slight disappointment, not sure if it's because it's not cooked fresh in front of us, it was a bit cold and don't taste as savory as how they usually are. Service 4/5: We were impressed that we did get served within the 45 minute timeline. However most of the time seems to be waiting, and the actual cook of the meal was around 6 minutes. That's maybe the down side of knowing your food is only coming if you see it cooking in front of you. You spend most of the time waiting, and the service it self was speedy and not much else. There's no talking or interaction for the cooking portion for this. Ambiance 3/5: habachi is usually a fun environment and generally you see someone celebrating something. However during the day time there's a lot of dead space and time where everyone's waiting on a chef, you'll likely have to share a table as well.

Wait is still very long from sitting down until the chef would arrive at your table, expect an hour…read morebefore the chef comes. Make sure you are not hungry or in a rush. We had good experiences with Chef Eric before. The last experience for a birthday dinner was unpleasant. Other than the wait, the chef quickly connected and bonded with the couple at the table and his focus had been on them, joking, and laughing with them to a point their laughed at whatever jokes he had. Some jokes felt inappropriate (spoke softly then laughed loudly) or they appeared to be teasing one of us asking for less butter, or the reactions from the children. I took it as different people may have different sense of humor but definitely felt uncomfortable to be sharing table with those feelings. When it came to cooking, the chef gave the couple two $9 chicken fried rice when we previously heard them saying it's too expensive and they did not want it. He gave them free fried rice and there was not enough rice to put into a bowl for my paid order. I had to tell him that I ordered one. Then, he tried to brush it off. It already made me more guarded to see if he would offer our food to the couple again. He did it again after he finished the couple's orders. When he was cooking the shrimps, he offered to give the couple shrimps. The coupld said no , then those shrimps came to my son's plate. This this point, I was very offended by his actions. I did not want to say it out loud and ruined a birthday dinner. The food was also very salty and overcooked as he was distracted talking and laughing with the couple. It felt like the whole world was just him and the guy from that couple. Food was not tasty (even the children commented about that), felt he cheated with our paid food by giving it out to the other customers, and uncomfortable experience overall. At the end, I couldn't help but asked our server if the couple ordered any fried rice in case I wrongfully accused anyone. She confirmed that the couple did not order any fried rice. The manager was also very attentive. She came and inquired what happened. She provided service recovery as much as she could and she said she would address it with the staff. I appreciate both our server and the manager. Thank you!

The ambience was intimate and cozy yet elegant, and the staff was very attentive and kind. I loved the decorations, the plates and silverware, and the food was just as intentional in flavor and selection. For appetizers we had: Anchovy Stuffed Olives Tempura - Tempura Spanish alives stuffed with anchovies $9 Kombu Tsukudani - Premium Hokkaldo kelp, say sauce, bonito, shiso, sesame seeds, enjoy with sake or rice $6 For our meal we had: Saba Bouzushi - House-cured saba mackerel bouzushi - stick-shaped sushi, also called battera, served with shiso, sesame, scallions, topped with Hokkaido shiraita kombu, ten pieces $29 Gindara Yuanyaki - Local black cod marinated in soy sauce and shikuwasa Okinawan citrus juice served grilled $34 Steelhead Trout Nabe - Norwegian ocean trout raised sustainably in the clear, cold ford where the seawater meets fresh meltwater from the glaciers in the mountains. Enjoy the rich flavored, melt-in-your-mouth fish, hotpot with dashi broth, mushrooms, napa cabbage, burdock, clear noodles, tofu, mizuna, scallions, yuzu kosho $39 We've been to many izakaya spots and this place had some of the most unique flavors I've tasted. The Saba Bouzushi stood out to me because it reminded of Filipino paksiw but as a roll! The Gindara was buttery and soft and had a yummy smoky flavor. The Nabe was perfect for a rainy evening - hearty, fresh, and so well balanced in flavor (I loved the yuzu kosho the had us add for a citrusy, peppery flavor)
