Hana Kitchen is another one of the main spots in IV. What I liked about this place was that the menu was kept very simple. They have bowls or tacos, and only a few protein options. I got the chicken bowl, and it came with rice, salad, and the chicken. They have a condiment station with pickled ginger, pickled cucumbers, spicy mayo, teriyaki sauce, soy sauce, and a whole bunch of other things. Me not being a fan of salads, the salad that came with my bowl was very good. I honestly loved it, and it was the first thing I finished. The chicken was cooked perfect, and the rice tasted great. One thing I did not like about this place, the containers they serve the food in. Whether you are going to eat there, or to-go it, they put it in the to-go containers which really gets annoying when you are eating. The flaps always get in the way, etc. and its very inconvenient to eat. The service was not that perfect either. I felt like the employees were there just to do their hours, get paid, and leave. Not that they offered bad service, but it did not meet expectations. The vibes that make you want to return were not there, but as for the food, I for sure will go back there if I were in IV. read more

The bowls available are OK. Nothing too special and they give a lot (maybe too many) veggies. I like the self serve toppings you can add to your bowls though so that's a plus! :) The boba is kind of hard but the drink itself is delicious! Milk tea portions are also bigger than what I consider average so you get your money's worth. Organization/service could be a bit better but I've only had problems when it's been really crowded. They have nice outdoor seating that just makes for a good vibe right alongside Pardall - you have students constantly passing you on bikes/boards and it's a nice Isla Vista vibe. If anything I go here for the setting more than the food. read more

Despite listing that they open at 11:00am, we walked in around 11:15am and were told to wait outside for about seven minutes before being let back in. However, after ordering it didn't take long to receive our generously portioned bowls of rice, meet, and veggies (i.e. cooked shredded cabbage and carrots). What DID take long was a boba milk tea I ordered at the same time as my bowl. After fifteen minutes, I checked in and the cashier said she was still waiting for the machine to turn on... Ten minutes after that, my boba milk tea was ready just as I finished my bowl. read more

This is my go-to place when I don't feel like cooking. The menu is super simple, which can be a good or bad thing. I always get a mini or regular chicken bowl with BMT boba. Honestly, there's not much to the dish (rice, chicken, and veggies). You definitely have to add some side ingredients; I like to add the orange spicy mayo sauce and green onions. The reason I took away one star is because the service sucks sometimes and the wait can get unnecessarily long. read more

If you are just visiting UC Santa Barbara and Isla Vista, I would not recommend coming here. The food is just average and it can vary at times. I've been to Hana Kitchen multiple times and they have given me uncooked rice, super dry chicken, and weird tasting vegetables. That being said, the consistency of this place is horrible. However, if you live in Isla Vista and go to school or something here, Hana Kitchen is an absolute staple. For only $5-6, you can get a bowl of rice and chicken or beef. Three words: vegan chicken bowl. SO BOMB. All of their bowls here are yummy. And if you can't decide which one to get, you can get a combination! The tacos are pretty good too but I'd rather go to Lilly's if I want tacos. As for boba, it's only okay. They're good for slushes but if you want milk tea or fruity tea I suggest one of the other boba places. The workers here are all really friendly! The only problem is that for some reason the food takes forever to come out, so be patient lol. They're open really late too if you get a craving in the middle of the night. Hana Kitchen is solid and probably the restaurant I eat at in IV the most. The only things I get are the drinks and the chicken bowls. 1) Drinks: Personally, I think the milk teas are way too sugary and sweet. Luckily you can ask the cashier for reduced amounts of sugar. I typically go for the slushes (with boba). They're consistently good and leave my craving for something fruity, sweet, and cold satisfied. The cool thing is that you can mix up to three different flavors in your slush drink. Drinks I recommend are any combo or single flavor between passion fruit, mango, and lychee in no particular order OR ice milk drink with boba and pudding. The boba is not always as good as it is on certain days but when it's good, it's reaaaally good. They've definitely improved their boba pearls from the beginning of this school year. 2) Chicken bowls: they're pretty inconsistent with how much they give (especially because I like to get the bowls without veggies; sometimes they fill the entire box with chicken and sometimes they only give me as much as I would've gotten with the vegetables). The chicken is always really yummy and tasty and I highly recommend getting either extra teriyaki sauce or SPICY MAYO!!! Spicy mayo with their chicken is so bomb. Try it. I love leaving hana kitchen full from their chicken bowls and feeling like I ate a (somewhat) healthy meal that wasn't greasy or fatty. Detailed and long review but all in all, Hana is really good. One thing I think they could improve on is a variety of drinks. They need some more flavored milk teas (i.e. Taro, almond, Thai) if they want to be the dominant boba place in the Santa Barbara area. read more

Hana is a-okay, not fabulous. Some dishes are pretty great, like the vegan pepper beef. But some are very meh, like the curry chicken. If you like chicken teriyaki that's the place to go because besides having tacos, they just have bobas. The black milk tea classic with the bobas is good, nothing special about it though. Their chicken teriyaki is in my opinion quite mediocre compared to the one that can be served at another sushi place in town. Solid chicken bowls. They're huge portions, which I really appreciated, and the chipotle sauce is pretty good. Service is relatively fast. Decided to give this place a try. The atmosphere and decor is extremely odd and off putting. Sort of a Vietnam War theme with helicopters and camo on the walls, with weird music and random Bruce Lee graphics? ok, ironic in this college town. The food is very limited, but the concept sounded good. What we got was basically rice, some frozen veggies, and chicken teriyaki (and beef, got both to try). It wasn't bad, it was just very blah. The kind of dish even a poor college kid could make at home easily for a quarter of the price. The bad part, we waited in line for about 10 minutes, ok fair enough, but after we ordered, it was 31 minutes until we got our food. The people behind the counter were extremely disorganized, we saw several people walk off with other people's food, the whole thing was a disaster. This place is run by kids with zero experience, and there does not appear to be any sort of manager or anybody that cares around. read more

If you are willing to overlook poor service and a messy environment, Hana delivers on a nice, mediocre rice bowl. The server had no idea what went into the bowls, even though it is literally just rice, meat, and cabbage+carrot+broccoli. They do have vegan options, which I appreciated. read more

I've been to Hana several times over the past two years and I personally think that this is the best food place in Isla Vista. The food overall is pretty good. The bowls (I've only had chicken) are a bit pricey (a dollar less and they'd be perfect, but I know it's unrealistic) and their tacos are good (chicken tacos and $1.50 tacos on Tuesday). They take a while to come out and they often get backed up, but it's usually worth. The veggies that come with the bowl goes well with the spicy mayo sauce and the cucumbers that they have there. The boba is meh. Usually it's too sweet for me, and one time (a long time ago, but still noteworthy for me) they made the drink not sweet enough (tasted like there was no sugar whatsoever). Snows are good but sweet and the pearls aren't bad. Overall, it's a go to for food, but an afterthought for boba. read more
