I chose Hana Tokyo for my birthday. I've had hibachi a few times before in other states but my husband and kids haven't experienced it, so I thought it would be fun and tasty for everyone. I made a reservation, so we were seated pretty quickly. I will say that our server was very attentive. She was quick with refills and clearing plates along with being friendly. We had no issues with that aspect. As far as the food goes, it was good. The salad was tasty, although the soup was pretty bland. All of our dishes were cooked well. Our biggest issue was our chef. I'm pretty sure we ended up with a trainee or the new guy. His skills were rudimentary and he didn't seem confident at all. He did do an impressive amount of banging the spatula and fork on the cooking surface but that didn't make up for his lack of skill. When he was getting ready to serve our main course, I asked him what happened to the shrimp appetizer. An appetizer is something you'd expect before the main course. He pointed at the shrimp on the grill and said it was part of that. He seemed very confused on how to divide the shrimp since two of us had ordered shrimp as part of a combo. (One with steak and one with scallops). He divided the shrimp up finally and plated it at the same time as the rest of our main course. Weird. We also had the pleasure of watching several other chefs in the restaurant and we definitely got the new guy! We decided to split 2 desserts and they were very mediocre. The "fried" ice cream just seemed to have a coating on it because the bottom of the ice cream wasn't even covered, so no way it was fried. The bananas were ok but I would definitely skip dessert if we were to return. I also had a mango margarita which was overly sweet and oddly thick in texture. I'd skip that next time too. All in all, good food, good service, bad chef experience. I'd consider returning to try the sushi sometime but wouldn't get hibachi again. read more

I've previously written critical reviews of Hana Tokyo, but an update is warranted. Wife and I came in Sunday with another couple and I was pleasantly surprised. The service was good. We were seated promptly. The appetizers were each about $8 and were good shareable portions. The crab puffs and gyoza and calamari were each light and crispy; not over-fried or heavily breaded. I got the scallop hibachi dinner. I expected a good meal, but my expectations were exceeded. The scallops were medium-sized sea scallops, but they served a hefty portion of them. They were golden brown on each side and were delicious. I forget what everyone else got, but they were pleased, too. Everyone left full and happy. Hana Tokyo offered some great Japanese dishes. We ordered the Tokyo Hana Combo Bento Box and the Combo Udon Noodle. The box included soup and a salad starter both were very good. The noodles had great flavor and were loaded with meat and vegetables, normally when you get a dish like this you get way too many noodles and not enough of everything else. The noodles were so good I wish there were more! The meat was all good but the chicken was a little dry. Everything was great with the Bento box and it was a great way to sample several items, Katsu, sushi, fish and shrimp. Service was very good and the restaurant had a pleasant atmosphere. read more

I ordered vegetable tempura as well as chicken teriyaki to go. The meals came with salad, miso soup and rice. The vegetable tempura was actually pretty good, with lots of yam (which I love). However, the teriyaki chicken was honestly the worst I have ever attempted to eat. Thinly sliced chicken which was so dry you could almost snap it in half. Definitely not easy to chew. I think they must save less than descent cooked chicken aside to use for to go orders. The chicken was so inedible I will never be back and will tell my friends how bad this meal was. The Christmas holiday. Gave us a lot of leftovers, decided to go with something different. Felt like some Japanese food. How remembered about Hana Tokyo. There was very limited about the restaurants open this day so we decide to try it once again. The staff was friendly enough. Very accommodating and quick in the service. They were extremely busy that day and took about half an hour to get a seat. If you wanted to see in the Teppanyaki, it would be faster. But from What, I noticed there was only one Teppanyaki Chef going around to all of the griddles. So it made it seem like getting a table was a lot faster. We ordered some food and noodles, some sushi, and a Bento box. The prices were higher than normal, and you can tell that the increase has come within the past year. The one thing that was the positive was the alcohol prices. They were definitely reasonable or below many other places in the area. It was worth a try to go any. But definitely won't be on my top 10 who is the king for Japanese if you're in the area definitely go give it a try for the staff. Or because of the location. But not because of the food. read more

We walked over to Hana Tokyo after a movie at Harkin's Theater. Asian food & a movie next to each other was perfect! Our food was also perfect! I had a simple dish of beef rice, and my wife had a Bento Box with small ginger-spiced salad, tempura vegtables, rice and sushi rolls. Our server did a good job of answering questions about the food, delivering the correct food. So far so good for Hana Tokyo. If this was all to report I'd given 5 Stars and an A+ grade. The one part of this dining experience which took away from this very good dining was our greeter / person who walked us back to a Dirty, Wet table. She did get a rag to clean up our table. She more or less rolled her eyes when I asked for a dry towel or paper to dry the now clean but wet table. She did not have anything to say; not "hi, how are you?" or "please follow me". My boyfriend and I loved this place! We came around 8pm on a Thursday evening and it was not busy at all, which was nice. Our server was very attentive, which could've just been because there wasn't any other business for her. She also made our drinks, not sure if that is a usual thing or if they have a bartender when they are busier. I wasn't a fan of the cocktails we got, not because of her they just have a lot of *interesting* cocktails that weren't flavors I am into. The food we got was fanstastic! The chef did the best he could but he was cooking for 2 full tables at a time moving food between the tables. The steak was awful and grisly. Even the rice wasn't cooked well. Food was fair at best. Giving this place a thumbs up for the tasty Dinner Bento A & B, delicious fashion maki, and flavorful rock n'roll. Great fresh sushi ingredients for sure. I was not disappointed in the sushi or bento box at the slightest. The sides were a great touch to our palettes. First time here and perhaps many more. I was pretty keen on the decor and furniture. The dark-wood theme keeps the room dark which makes the setting pretty relaxing however I don't see too well when lights are too dim. Ambience I would say is average; the restaurant space doesn't make you feel like you're fitting into a tight space. Bring your jacket if you go! It getting a bit chilly in there. Last time we sat at one of the hibachi tables where they cook in front of you, always a treat and very entertaining. However, this time, we went during lunch and opted for a regular table. The lunch bentos come with rice (white or fried rice), a couple of dumplings, a few pieces of california roll, and fruit. Lots of food! The meal was very fulfilling! The salmon was perfectly grilled and mmm good with the teriyaki on top. Salmon is one of my favorite dishes! I'm disappointed. I ordered the sushi deluxe. It comes with nigiri and a tuna roll. I asked for no cucumber on my tuna roll if it came with it and told them to add avocado. Instead I got just a plain avocado roll and I believe it was nine pieces of assorted nigiri. I got three what is known as butter fish(cheap) and two shrimp. It was not assorted at all. 02/06/2023 Dear Mr.Cheung I have been a long time customer of Hanna Tokyo. Coming on most Fridays, after going to the Harkins Theater, something I always leave Friday open for. Just before you opened Ironwood Steakhouse I noticed the quality of food was was declining, and the wait staff was becoming less responsive to any substitutions not on the menu, your way or the highway. , After several more visits, with things getting much worse, I just stopped going. I went to other more accommodating restaurants to spend my dollar. The treatment I received from Hanna Tokyo, was what you would expect a greasy cheap Chinese Restaurant, where they say "Cook No Can Change". Penny wise pound foolish, is the word of the day. I decided on 02/18/2022 to give Hanna Tokyo the benefit of the doubt and give dinner a try again, (maybe they had changed cooks / chefs.) This would turn out to be something I would live to regret, so here we are. I ordered the Dinner BENTO D as well as a Chicken Katsu with cream cheese. I ordered the steak Medium Rare. My Bill: $34.78 + $5.00 tip Total $39.78 The Chicken Katsu roll was so crusty and impossible to chew I could not eat any of it. My guess is that the chicken had been sitting around for quite a wile. Definitely not fresh, maybe just way over deep fried. The really big issue is the Steak, which is of course the main attraction in any "BENTO BOX." If the steak is no good than so goes the rest of the meal. The Steak (if you can call it that) was so tough and chewy, it tasted like a ball of bad meat pulp in my mouth. Totally inedible. I asked to speak to the Manager. A twenty something's young lady with blond hair came to the table. I explained, my experience with the steak, She kind of scoffed at my explanation and what I was saying,about how tough it was. I said that the cut was at best USDA Select. Amazingly she became an expert in all cuts of beef. And attempted to give me a lesson in the cuts that Hanna Tokyo uses and always has. In the past when ordering the BENTO BOXES the beef has been chewy but edible (Slice Thin At Table.) I don't expect A5 WAGYU BEEF in a twenty five dollar BENTO BOX. However I would have ordered it if it had been available. This steak tasted like USDA Select, no way was it USDA Choice, and USDA Prime, Hell No. This is low end Supermarket grade meat at best. At least if you are going to use low grade meat, tenderize it. The Manager asked what I wanted her to do? I asked if I could exchange the steak for another entree, that might taste better. She told me their were no other entrees available. I asked about shrimp and scallops, chicken and shrimp,salmon The best the Manager could offer to re-cook the steak. I explained that the steak would come from the same bad batch, and as such would just duplicate the bad steak that i had already received. And that was really the issue, in a nutshell. At that point the Manager went into overload and shutdown. I said if nothing else could be done to fix the steak issue, I asked that she remove the cost of the steak and I would pay the bill and leave very unsatisfied. In a very bad situation like this one, the Manager should immediately comp the entire meal. A replacement meal should be agreed upon an re served. Lots of promises that this will never happen again, to reassure the customer, and ask that the the customer return to make sure the issue is repaired. Following that any high end restaurant would offer a complementary return dinner. This is a teachable lesson. I suggest, you cannot bear the idea of any profit loss. I was told that that exchange would be impossible, the BENTO BOXES were priced as a entire Unit and could not be changed. Then she offered to remove the CHICKEN KATSU ROLL. "REALLY, UNBELIEVABLE." The steak makes up the lions retail share of the dinner BENTO BOX. FINALLY, ENOUGH WAS ENOUGH. I asked for my total ticket, with nothing deducted (Listed Above) I left very Angry, I ate virtually Nothing, I asked for takeout containers (6) and packed everything up to take home and take pictures for my INTERNET REVIEW. This has become my favorite sushi spot in Tucson. It's a great location in a busy shopping center near shopping and a movie theatre. The sushi is always fresh and the selection is great. Recently went for the hibachi and was very pleased. The chef was friendly and cooked our filet just as ordered. Lobster was not overdone and the portions were very fair for $33. They have a full liquor bar and very friendly staff. This spot is clean and well maintained with indoor and outdoor seating. He was busy and attentive, unlike the servers. The Bento Box C was the worst I've ever had. The shrimp was horribly overcooked, rubbery and flavorless and the chicken teriyaki was dry dry dry.
