Overall, worth your money! Highly recommend if you're looking for a conveniently located place to sleep with a kind staff. Some tips before you arrive: 1) The rooms are something you'd find at summer camp. Unfinished floors, ceiling, etc. 2) The kitchen has all the appliances you'll need (e.g., toaster oven, pots, can opener, peelers, blender, etc.). It's kept fairly well, but some of the appliances are grungy and don't really work. 3) The roosters are loud and the walls are thin, if someone moves over you, you'll hear it. Also, car alarms can go off right outside the hostel. So bring ear plugs, maybe white noise if you're sensitive to sounds. 4) no A/C but it gets cool enough at night (in April) 5) a ~10mile bike path along the ocean is right outside from the hostel with a good for swimming and surfing beach at the end of it read more

Staying at Kauai beach house hostel was an exceptional experience for me. The central location in Kapaa is practical for accessing the beach, some near by hikes to waterfalls and only a short jaunt from great surfing beaches. Even without a car I was able to walk a little ways up the bike trail for a beach bonfire under the starlit sky or swim out for snorkeling with sea turtles and spear fishing. Some mornings one can see the whales and dolphins right from the rooftop. It is a great place for making new connections weather rubbing shoulders in the kitchen while cooking up a plethora of healthy dishes, or hanging out on the back patio exchanging music flavors. The place has a vibrant energy with supportive staff and the open air floor plans make one feel in tune with the energy of the island. read more

Rats. Rats. Rats. Everywhere. In the beds, in the luggage, in the ceilings. I. witnessed a large run across a bed with a sleeping man in it, and then run up the wall above his bed. I lived on Kauai during Iniki and the condemned houses that we played in after the hurricane were in better shape than this place. I'm not sure how this place is even able to be open. It is disgusting and unsafe. There was a homeless man that repeatedly broke in each night we were there and stole things. The staff was very friendly but honestly, were a bunch of kids that clearly get a free place to stay if they work a little. This place is shady af. Cash only payment, no receipt. If you're looking for an affordable place to stay, look no further! We got lucky and booked a private Queens room. It included two full size bunk beds. We stayed here because we wanted to explore Kapaa and Poipu parts of the island. If I could, I would rate it a 3.8 stars. It's quite a maze / walk just to get to the shared bathroom/showers. You would need to pass by two different dormed/open bed rooms just to pass by and quite frankly I felt so bad interrupting sleep when I needed to go use the restroom during the night. Our door doesn't easily close shut and LOUD when wanting privacy Nonetheless, the staff was extremely friendly and gave us a cool secluded recommended beach area called Donkey's Beach nearby. Maybe I'm being picky, but this place is alright. Structurally, this is a former house turned into a hostel. It's quite interesting. But it seems they've added some things that got me wondering if it meets building code. Maybe it's the architect in me that makes me look at the place that way, but if all you're looking for is a place to crash, then this is the spot. The location is awesome, right on the beach in Kapaa. You're within walking distance to shops and restaurants. And the place seems "secure." Meaning, you need a secret password to get through the front door but most beds are just out in the open. I would hate to see how this place is in a storm. If you're fortunate to get a private room, I highly suggest getting one that opens to the ocean side. You'll get cross ventilation. There were 6 of us, and we got 2 private rooms. One room had a king and the two girls decided to have that, while the other room had a double sized bunk bed. Good thing me and my friend didn't mind having to share the bottom bunk while the couple we were with took the top bunk. The mattress was comfy, but the pillows were kinda flat. We had a room that was accessed through the lanai sleeping area. That was kinda awkward when we had to wake up before the crack of dawn because you're passing through bunches of people sleeping to go bathroom or to leave. While we were only there one night, we used the kitchen area to hold our foods. The kitchen is on the second floor. Some of the refrigerators were out of order, so that kinda sucked, but we were able to fit our food in. While we were going to sleep hella early, they were preparing some kinda group meal. Or it seemed to be. It was kinda noisy, but I had ear plugs. But quiet hours do start at 10pm so my travel partners were able to catch some sleep. The bathrooms were alright, but I only used one. I wish there were more hooks in the bathroom as I didn't know where to put my stuff besides on the toilet while I showered. The countertop was tiny. The bathroom coulda used a good scrubbing, but it's no worse than the camp bathrooms I have been using, so I was ok with it. Not sure if I'd return here though. While it was alright, I would have been ok at camping somewhere for the night before going backpacking. But that's me. read more

They canceled all pre paid reservations and are keeping everyone's money. They got shut down for code violations and it seems they are using our money to pay for it. This is not legal. They turned their phones off and took their website down. They are registered with State of Hawaii Dept of Commerce and Consumer Affairs to file a complaint against them. You can file in Small Claims Court in Hawaii and can also contact your credit card company to file a fraudulent charge in hope of getting a return on your money. The Location works with dorm beds with a water view the place does get quiet at 10pm so getting sleep is possible parking is tight but made it work. Although they pack the guests in dorm areas. There are some common areas to sit and chat but all the real social interaction goes in the dorm area when people pull them selves from their devices. I still getting used co-ed hostel dorm but they work as long as I decent nights rest. I met some nice guests during my visit including a Canadian Firefighter with hopes of being and MMA competitor. Young Artist the used the term a-lase to me and I still don't understand its usage even looking for it on the urban dictionary. This was an okay hostel to stay at in Kapa'a, but in my opinion, there are way too many house rules and it gets super overcrowded. Even with the private room I had, there are shared bathrooms and a large number of dorms nearby. Plus, the layout was confusing and the parking was tight and extremely limited, and you can't park out on the streets of Kaua'i overnight, unfortunately. There is a shared kitchen, rooftop deck, and other common areas towards the front of the location to relax at, but those get crowded in a hurry. As one who often stays at hostels when island-hopping, this one did not really meet my expectations, and my expectations aren't really that high to begin with. Steer clear. They cancelled my reservation one day in advance (due to upgrades that have been going on for months) with no offer to refund the stay or rebook in the future. If rebooking is an option, the cancellation email didn't indicate so. The tone was more, "Sorry, guess you're out of luck." Aloha means you take care of people and this place doesn't do that. Maybe if enough people cry credit card fraud on them they'll reconsider their 'keep your money and run' mode of business. If you need cheap accomodation, look into Kauai County campsites. read more

I really wish I had paid more attention to the negative reviews on TripAdvisor (including the owner or manager's unprofessional replies), Yelp & Google. While I absolutely LOVED my stay Kaua'i, coming back to this hostel every night was definitely my least favorite part of the trip. PROS: - The location is great. It's close to shops, restaurants, grocery stores. - The view. Watching the sunrise every morning was amazing. - BRIAN, the nicest guy on staff - The quiet hours, which are great when you're up early. CONS: - This hostel isn't cheap. If you're travelling with someone, you might want to spend a little more and get a hotel room or an AirBnb. - The day I arrived (around 9:30 PM), the bed wasn't made. I was given sheets and a pillow case. I decided to take a shower first since I had been travelling for 22 hours and when I returned to the room, it was pitch black. Fun times trying to make your bed in the dark... Sidenote: the pillow was as flat as a pancake. - Except for Brian, who is an absolute GEM OF A HUMAN BEING, the staff wasn't the friendliest or most helpful. The first day I was there, I asked the girl at reception (one of the international staff) if she could recommend a place nearby for breakfast, which isn't an uncommon question when you work at the reception of a hostel. She just said "no". I can understand that maybe she didn't know the area or really couldn't recommend any place, but the least she could've done was to direct me to the binder of menus that was right next to her. Honestly, most of the international staff who was working there didn't seem like they cared or wanted to work, with some exceptions. After that first encounter, I only talked to Brian if I had a question or needed help. - The bathrooms look run down. They're old and dirty. And there's not enough of them. Everyone wants to use them as the same time, so you end up waiting, sometimes for a while. - Considering the fact that food is expensive in Hawaii, you can expect a lot of budget travelers to buy groceries and cook. There are only 2 fridges and 1 stove, and obviously, everyone wants to cook at the same time, which leads to a very congested kitchen... And everyone buys groceries, which means there is no room in the fridges... - The kitchen opens at 7, which means that you basically can't make anything to eat early in the morning if you're trying to head out before 7. The kitchen also closes at 9:15, which means you're out of luck if you return late and have not eaten. - I slept in the girls dorm and there are NO WALLS between the dorm and the kitchen (they literally had blinds between the two rooms), which means you hear everything going on out there. - Several people arrived and did not have the bed they had booked, so they had to sleep on a mattress that was in a corner of the room... - The door to the girl dorm's terrace was difficult to open and close, so it stayed open most of the time. There are windows all along the walls, so with the addition of the open door, it meant that some nights, it got really windy and even cold. - Anyone with a top bunk bed had zero space to put their stuff, so everyone stuff is lying around at the bottom of every bunk bed. - There are several couches and two long tables in the common area. While it's nice that there is a lot of seating, I did not feel comfortable sitting on any of the fabric couches because they looked dirty as hell. - They were supposedly renovating (the 3rd floor and terrace were closed for renovations) but I hardly saw any work happening. - Once, I encountered a couple at reception that booked a private room, which was not available somehow, so they were given a "room" with no walls (again with the blinds). When they voiced their discontent and asked for a refund so they could get a room somewhere else, they were told the hostel doesn't give refunds. The woman said if she had know how run down this hostel was, she would've never booked a room there. I feel the same way. The pictures they have on their website make it seem like a much nicer place, and it isn't. They basically don't let you cancel so you're trapped and have to stay or decide to leave without getting your money back. LOST SOULS (and I'm not talking about the travelers). The energy here is very dark and stagnant. If you decide to stay here keep to yourself, as nice as the workers might pretend to be, so fake. "Monica", when you point a finger remember 3 are pointing right back at you. For someone who smokes so much weed you sure have a stick up your a**. The owner's son was feeling threatened for no reason, but when someone has so much darkness they try and put out vibrant light. If you stay here make sure to wash all your stuff in acid, because this place is a breeding ground for bedbugs/ staph infection/ lice and the black plague. Make sure to do some type of aura cleanse. And to some of the people going through here, get out while you still can, there is only so much you can learn in one place. Don't become them. Your light is too bright to be put out by these energy vampires. And to the owner, clean house, starting with your son. All the bad reviews on here true 110%. The hostel: Great open air kitchen. The big grocery (Safeway) store is a little ways on foot but if you get a car or bike, it's not that far. Plenty of showers and toilets, never had a problem getting in one. The showers were warm and I respected the water consumption consciousness. And that they recycle. I was in the OHANA room which was perfect for my partner and myself because it was semi private. Beautiful view from the back dorm rooms. Very open and breezy. Two decks. A common area in the front filled with trees and plants. A bike/walk path along the water right out back. Close to shopping, coffee, small grocery store, food carts and juice cafés. The staff: AMAZING! I went in seeing them as "staff" and left feeling like they were family (OHANA). During my stay, I got engaged in a gazebo near the hostel. Coincidentally, Joshua, whom I now see as a friend, is ordained to wed couples so the staff and guest all came together to host my wedding to my partner. Absolutely beautiful! Right on the beach out back. Chris and Gaia got us leis and a bouquet that was later caught by Kiala (wonderful guest). I could go on but I'm selling the hostel, not a wedding but I would recommend a wedding on the beach as it was absolutely beautiful! The kauai beach house hostel was not only a part of the trip but a very important piece in my life and I think that as long as you are familiar with hostel life then you will enjoy this one. read more

I stayed in this hostel five years ago and had a great time. It's right on the beach and it was so fun and affordable ! When I came five years ago the staff was super friendly, I felt safe and felt that i got a good value. Not this time ! Since my memories of it were so fun I decided me and my bf could stay here again on our recent trip to Kauai. We didn't have so much fun this time. Whoever is running it has completely sold out and overcrowded the place like crazy for more money. There is someone sleeping literally everywhere you turn, even by the front desk ! I'd NEVER stay here again for the following reasons. 1. It was not that cheap. We could have gotten an AirBNB for maybe a little more and not have to deal with the issues we dealt with. 2. We were put on a lanai with like 5 other people. When I came here before it was NOT overcrowded like this !! They added pull out couches to rent as well in what used to be a common area, making the place even more crowded ! They even rented out the front office. Like wtf? 3. Since it was so overcrowded we had to wait like an hour each time we wanted to shower. That sucks !! Such a waste of time when you're ready to get out and do stuff ! 4. Woken up in the middle of the night three times by some guy sorting recycling. By sorting recycling I mean throwing glass bottles onto other glass bottles for like an hour straight right by where we were sleeping ! Yes, in the middle of the night ! 5. It's not clean anymore. When I came here five years ago I was really impressed by how clean it was. Now it's gross. There are holes in the ceiling and bugs everywhere and cobwebs formed right next to where you sleep. 6. I now understand why they don't give refunds. It's because it's not worth the cost. And since they are 'hip' hostel they are held up to absolutely NO standards. Otherwise they'd be giving refunds left and right. I didn't even stay here two nights that I paid for so I would love a refund but just SOL ! ‍ 7. There was nowhere to park. We parked across the street, then had to wake up again and move the car because we were afraid of getting towed. We parked in the space that was available, then woke up to a nasty gram on the car saying we needed to park better. 8. There was no room anywhere to put any of our things whatsoever. So we had to keep everything in the car. So whenever I needed anything i had to walk down to the car to change clothes, etc. I was backpacking, and therefore had no space to unpack my backpack. So I had to repack it and keep it in the car every time I got something. Super annoying !! You should at least have enough space to keep SOME personal items. There wasn't room for even my purse next to the bed. When I was here before I at least had enough space to keep a small backpack, as you SHOULD be able to. 9. Since it's so freakin overcrowded now, you can't use the kitchen or fridge. There was NO room in the fridge. I wanted to literally put a small to-go box in there of some leftovers I wanted to eat and there wasn't even room for that because it was too packed. So forget having a fridge. 10. We splurged on an Airbnb the last 2 nights. This place just isn't fun anymore. read more

I've stayed at dozens of hostels around the world - this is by far my worst and unreasonable experience. 1) terrible cancellation policy - booked 2 months out, then within 24 hours of booking our plans changed and we needed to cancel. Even airlines let you cancel for free within 24 hours of booking. It was also two months out, so it wasn't like they weren't going to get someone else to book. Unreasonable. 2) beware the "queens room". We started sleeping in top bunk, and were absolutely eating alive by something. By 2am, we were covered in small bites, sleepless and about 20 min away from just walking to the car and sleeping there. Swapped to bottom bunk and things improved, but not much. Left as soon as we could in the morning. For being the most expensive hostel I've ever stayed in, I was surprised how "dirty" the beds felt. The social area is great, decks and views amazing and people here seem great too - but at the end of the day, you still gotta provide a clean and safe place to sleep. read more

Not good at all. The place is a shack pieced together. The bathrooms are disgusting, the kitchen is filthy. They have weird rules and doors that are not lockable. There is no private storage such as lockers without paying them a fee. I saw a sign that said "under construction" in the corner and that's exactly what you are walking into here. Some little mix ups happened with our reservation- poor girl, it was her second day on the job so we cut her a break. They did accommodate us back to the reservation we originally had in spite of her mix up and then cut us a deal in the end of our stay so it worked out. This is definitely your beach life style hostel. A true experience I'd say. If you want privacy and a bathroom with rugs and pretty tiles- don't come here haha The ocean view is amazing, moonrise AND sunrise can be seen from the ground floor and of course the roof top. Every single night I stayed here I woke up to an angry hostel-goer who was not promised a bed among their reservation. I stayed 3 nights... and seriously.. in the middle of the night people arriving with no bed. I mean... I can't imagine arriving late at night, when i PAID, to find out someone messed up ?! Thank goodness I had mine! My bed was dirty and not prepared when I arrived (upon the designated check in time) Things were broken... our bathroom sink was clogged... showers very dirty. If you want a cheap place to stay walking distance from food, drinks, and shopping, this is a good spot. However, the price and location don't make up for several pitfalls in my mind. My friend booked the private queens room at this place and I agreed to go along without looking at the reviews first. Our room was on the first floor, accessed via the back deck. It shares a thin plywood wall with the male dorm. The deck is covered in beds (we had to step over people to get to the bathroom). The header over the door was missing, as was a pane from each window, making this an open air experience. Not so bad in early March with cool temperatures and a steady breeze, but I imagine the bugs, heat, and humidity are brutal at other times of the year. The room was dark, and had one light bulb. The room had a fan and outlets for your electronic devices. It was a tight fit for two people. We had to make our own beds and got one set of sheets for the entire trip. Most nights people outside respected the quiet hours (10pm to 8am), but one night a loud group stayed up a bit late and kept us awake after we'd been on a long hike. Not fun. The bathrooms are cleaned every day, but they are old with ceiling panels missing (you can see rusted fans in the ceiling) and mold in the corners. During peak times it's difficult to get a spot. I found one bathroom on the property that had a toilet with no shower. Otherwise it's hard to relieve yourself when everyone is waiting to shower in the other bathrooms. The kitchen is often crowded. We didn't use it to cook, but even getting water out of the sink took awhile. Parking is also tight. We never had to park elsewhere, but often had to spend about 10 minutes getting in or out as the spaces are small and there's not room to maneuver. The couches in the common areas are rented out for people to sleep on. I'm not familiar with HI state health and safety laws, but this has got to be some kind of code violation. Having people sleep basically outside on cloth couches (which aren't washed) in a buggy, humid environment cannot be sanitary. If you don't get a private room, I'm not sure what your chances are of getting one of these "beds" instead of the dorm rooms. The park outside the hostel doesn't have a beach (although it's a short walk to one that isn't very safe to swim on). There are a lot of homeless out there but they tend to keep to themselves. Normally I'd rate this three stars because of price and location, but two things knocked it down to two stars for me. Thing 1: The owner's responses to reviews on Trip Advisor are unacceptable. He (or she) yells "FAKE NEWS" at people, accuses them of lying, and goes on pages-long tirades against them for leaving feedback. It's disgusting. I'm glad I didn't run into the owner while staying here. Thing 2: Just take a gander on AirBnB for 10 minutes and you can find much better accommodation for a similar price (especially if you're splitting with a group), so this isn't that unique of a deal to be honest. read more

As profit, I have never been treated so poorly by overhead. The operation is a mess. The environment is sad and broken. The attitude of their caretakers is horrible. They stack more beds in the already over crowded rooms. Staff sits around and talks about guests and tourists in general. Juvenile, unhinged, and low class operators. I made a reservation on their website so they did not have to pay fees to other websites. Payment was not taken upon reservation via their website, however, credit card information was given. I then cancel my reservation with a 48 hour buffer and confirmed via phone call. Whoever I spoke to said it was fine. On the last day of my would-have-been reservation, they charge my credit card for the full amount. I called them to discuss this and for two weeks they keep saying they'll take my contact and have someone contact me. No one ever contacted me. When I email them, they tell me that they do not give refunds, which I understand. Per their terms page, cancellations are allowed, they don't give refunds. However, I argued that this case is not a refund because there was no payment made upon booking or cancelling. This is definitely a gray area but the amount of time and effort I had to put in to try to speak with someone about the matter was remarkably annoying. This is a great place to stay if you're traveling by yourself and want something cheap. PROS: - The lanai (balcony) has an oceanview - Good location in historic Kapa'a town in Kauai. There's also a market right across the street and plenty of places within walking distance to go eat so it's convenient - Bathrooms are fairly clean - Really cheap $25/night for dormitory style beds or $55/night for a private room - It's easy to meet other travelers - They have a kitchen you can use - The staff is super friendly. They always offered me a beer everytime I hung out in the common areas. I even met the owner who likes to travel a lot so we shared travel stories. CONS - They haven't really kept up the rooms that well. A lot of things need repairs. - Lights out is at 9:30pm but they have a common room that is open all night long. I stayed in this hostel in the beginning of May with my friend and we both had a horrible experience. Due to this experience, this hostel will more than likely be our first and LAST hostel stay. We stayed in the female dorm and on our first full day, some girls that were staying in the bunks above us were relocated to a different room due to getting bitten up by what they thought were bed bugs. Their beds were removed and "alledgedly" replaced with new beds. (Side note: Management was trying to keep quiet about this whole situation and I only knew this information because I talked to the girls directly and they showed me the bumps on their arms. They were also given a refund in hopes that they wouldn't talk about this or share this online. Ha) Not to my surprise, on our second to last day I noticed a cluster of bumps on both of my arms that were itchy and aligned with what I saw with first group of girls who had complained and were transferred to different rooms. Immediately I walked to the check in office to complain and before I could fully explain or show her my arms, she told me "Those are not bedbugs bites." I asked her how could she be so sure being that the bunk beds above me were removed due to bed bugs and she said and I qoute "We do not have bed bugs, those beds were removed because there were cockroaches." COCKROACHES? -ES? PLURAL? IN THE BUNK BEDS ABOVE ME? As if that's supposed to make me feel better! Anywho, this happened the afternoon before the day we were supposed to checkout and we really had no other choice but to tough it out until then. Needless to say, we were really uncomfortable and READY TO GO! Along with that, the place does not look like what they show online, it is very old and run down and the beds are super uncomfortable (as if you're laying on a slack of wood). It was our first time visiting Hawaii and we did not look forward to coming back to the hostel at the end of the night. We talked to other travelers who came from different hostels throughout the island and they also informed us that this hostel isn't as clean and neat as the ones they've stayed in, so it was a different experience for them too. read more

WARNING. This hostel refused to issue us a refund after our trip plans changed even though we were trying to cancel 3 weeks prior to our stay of only one night. They stated that we could use what we paid the next time we visited Kauai which could be never since this was a traveling stop. We accepted paying a 20% cancellation fee even though our reservation was far out, however they still are being extremely reticent to give us our money back. A staff member was insulting and extremely unprofessional in email exchanges saying -- "and if your friends are anything like you pls let them know it is, just like the airlines and so many other vacation places, a no refund. We expect adults to not make a reservation that they cannot keep, it's a world wide adult thing...besides 1 night...we aren't a last resort kind of place and expect not to be treated as same, by a 1 night foot in the door of Kauai reservation...it is common in the hospitality industry people who make a 1 night and no show or cancel and want their $$$ back.That's why no refund saves the business people the hassle you have presented." Refusing to offer refunds when they can easily fill the room due to the length of time prior to our stay that we canceled is essentially this business getting free money not to mention an inhospitable and unfair policy. This place is NOT AT ALL like the website shows or portrays through words or pictures. If you must stay somewhere, this can work, but your better off with a tent. I talked to quite a few people on my stay here and everyone agreed this was on the very low end for Hostels. I would go to any other hostel that's a few more bucks a night for a cleaner bed. read more

Kauai Beach House - Your luxurious accommodations. - Resorts Near Me - Kapaa, Hawaii

There aren't a lot of options for hostels in Kauai. This one has a good location, right next to the beach. Kapa'a is a great little town. I thought the girls working there were very helpful and I always saw them cleaning. I didn't feel like there were adequate bathrooms/showers. I stayed in a private girl's dorm and we thankfully had an extra bathroom(toilet) and a deck to ourselves. I didn't like that the kitchen is right next to that dorm and therefor you can always hear everyone cooking. Don't expect wifi to work. read more
