i have to admit, when i walked into hanco's for the first time, i was a bit skeptical. the menu is small and the restaurant does not have the vibe of the typical vietnamese restaurants that i am used to eating pho at. however, Hanco's is honestly really good. i always order the beef pho and it hits the spot every time. the broth of the soup has so much flavor, which isn't always the case at other restaurants. i also love their shrimp rolls, they're light, refreshing, and delicious. their items are also priced well. i would definitely recommend Hanco's if you're in the mood for pho :) read more

As I continue on my quest for the perfect Bahn Mi, I have decided to try Hanco's, which has the best reputation in Brooklyn, for Bahn Mi. Although the bread was not as crusty as Paris Sandwich Shop, this was a better sandwich. You have options, so there is a bit of customization. You can have it mild, medium or spicy. Of course, with my penchant for chile, I ordered spicy and you can even have it on whole wheat, for an extra .75 cents. This time, I ordered the Classic Sandwich, made with ground pork, Vietnamese ham, pate and accompaniments. Their pickled carrots and daikon (at Paris Sandwich Shop, it was only carrots) was perfectly pickled with the correct balance of vinegar and sugar and added so much more flavor than the carrots that were in my Paris Sandwich. This had large stalks of cilantro, so it had the freshness I was missing at Paris. In conclusion, this filling in Paris's bread would be the perfect Bahn Mi! Absolutely loved this place, the sammiches are amazing and the bubble tea is like angels swimming in your mouth! This place is so good I'd like to get an apartment close by! The neighborhood is really cool and there is a really classy ice cream shop next door that I wanted to try, after leaving Hanco's I just had no room. We had the classic and the shredded chicken, extra spicy, sooo good. Also had summer rolls which were good too. To me, Hanco's gives Lotus a run for its money for the best vegetarian banh mi! Came here and immediately wanted the vegetarian pork. Unfortunately, they were out and went for the vegetarian chicken instead. Despite being my 2nd choice, it made me totally happy. The veg chicken was in nice huge chunks and still steaming. The baguette was perfectly toasted and still fluffy on the inside. The pickled vegetables were fresh and crisp... and the protein to vegetable ratio was perfect. I finished in one sitting, so it was also perfectly sized. I will definitely be back... and need to try the vegetarian pork, as it is my new measuring stick. I think my sandwich was like $7 or $8 which is still under 10. and 5 dollars is like 10 in new york so I'll just say that it was a decent deal. The sandwich had all kinds of meats in there, great consistency and mixture of who knows what. The sauce that's in there is really what did it for me though. I live 2 blocks away from Hanco's and this is the closest I got to Vietnamese food. For that, I'm super greatful and will continue to support their business. My go-to orders are: Classic Vietnamese Sandwich Grilled chicken Vietnamese Sandwich Beef pho with all types of beef without the raw slice of beef - this is because I usually take it to go or order deliver so the broth is not as hot as what you would get if you were at the restaurant. I think the blood kind of clouds the broth as well. They have good bubble tea beverages with so many varieties. Again, the closest I got without going across the bridge to Chinatown. Licking all those lil crumbled morsels, that couldn't be contained in the crispy bread boat, off the paper. And really it left me a bit underwhelmed. My issues were it wasn't the most flavorful pho broth I've had and second it had TONS of cartilage. I wasn't shocked to find it in a Vietnamese dish since it is often used, BUT I ordered the beef. It should be the SPECIAL or TRADITIONAL if its going to be anything more than the beef. In my case, my wife is more Barbarian than I so she ate each jelly/bone textured bit. I gag just thinking about it. Therefore I will pass on the Pho in the Phuture. This is solely based on the banh mi. I got the pork banh mi with medium level of spice and it was extremely flavorful. Granted it was my first time eating a banh mi sandwich but I know good food when I eat them. The bread was so crispy and the carrot and radishes in the sandwich was cold and crunchy with the perfect amount of dressing. Because we live in a west-facing apartment on the sixth floor of our building and don't have air conditioning set up yet, we decided it's time for a staycation before we melted. So we ended up getting a hotel for the night right near Hanco's! Being from Montgomery County in Maryland, I'm used to getting really good pho at least once ever couple of weeks. Here in Brooklyn, not so much... and not so authentic. However, for Brooklyn, where I don't get to have Bo Vien and tendon in my pho, this place was good and super fast carry out! I've never been impressed by bahn mi before and this one was particularly stinky, as it had a lot of pickled radishes and my coworker complained that it smelled like trash but it was DELICIOUS so whatever. When it comes to Asian food, the more flavorful and smelly it is, the better! I came here for lunch and asked for 2 orders of summer rolls to go. I've made this same order a couple of times in the past, and both times they put all 4 rolls in one container. When I got back to work I noticed that they'd only given me 2 rolls, so just one order. They were eh. Didn't taste like much, rice paper wasn't fresh. I went back after work and explained the situation. They have several people look at the receipt and then tell me they have to look at the camera. I'm a little annoyed, but shrug it off and say ok and sit down. But then I'm thinking "soooo they don't believe me." They believe there's a possibility I came back hours later to try to get $5.25 worth of free food." So I ask them, "Do you not believe me?" The young man at the cash register tells me they just have to check. I tell them that if they believed me, they wouldn't have to check. He then says "well it was 6 hours ago". So actually defending it. It just felt insulting, and I said so. So I wait about 10 minutes and one of the staff was very nice and apologized, and acknowledged she's made a mistake, and hands me my food. I tell her I want a refund (I know I should have said this before, but I originally wanted the food, I changed my mind after what happened happened). The guy at the front wordlessly hands me my refund. No apology, just the refund. I looked down and away from him, so I'm not sure what else he did. I get that restaurants have a small profit margin.
