Handel's cream is downright delicious! We stopped yesterday for cones. I learned that the ice cream is made fresh on site. Handel's is an Ohio based franchise that was started by Alice Handel in 1945. The local location is limited to a walk-up window near Greyhound Pass in Carmel. We had a choice of over 50 flavors, including sherbet and vegan options. Service is friendly and quick. I selected a small cone with coffee chocolate chip ice cream. The small cones are quite large. There must have been a quarter pound of chocolate chips in my ice cream! It was delicious - not too sweet. My husband had the strawberry cheesecake crunch small cone. He loved the crunch and thought the ice cream tasted very fresh. I appreciated that the paper wrapper on the cone was not glued to the cone. I love my cone. We ate our cone at clean outdoor benches that are on the north side of their shop. Parking is close and the shop was not busy during our afternoon visit. read more

I thought it was like any other ice cream shop, but I have to say that the Graham Central station was one of the best ice creams I've ever had. We went to the east Carmel location, which has walk-up windows to place your order. It's in a shopping complex with plenty of parking. I got a small size in a cake cone. I recently placed an order for dinner via DoorDash and was offered the "Double Dash" option to add an additional purchase from another restaurant to my order. I ordered 2 pints of ice cream from Handel's. My husband ate his entire pint of Mint Chocolate Chip in a single sitting! I, on the other hand, hadn't even touched my pint when on the very next day he decided that he'd like to stop by to purchase some more from this location. As we pulled into the parking lot, I pulled up their website to view the available flavors. He is a loyalist, but I like to try any and every flavor the piques my interest. He exited the vehicle and, lucky for him, the line was not wrapped around the side of the building like it usually is. I saw that they had Caramel Latte in their line-up and sent my selection to him via text. Moments later he called. They didn't have it. I'd initially gone on the site in search of the sherbet flavors, so I opted for a scoop of Red Raspberry and one of Orange. It was sooo sweet. Like, too too sweet. I was disappointed that they didn't have a flavor that was being advertised on their website and even more so when I tasted the sherbet. I didn't even finish it. The long line went pretty fast. There was lots of choices for ice cream lovers. Plenty of benches to sit and enjoy your selection. The only non dairy option that was not sherbert was not that great, but thankful for the option as most ice cream places do not have anything but sherbert for non dairy people. We've been going to this location and it's hardly ever disappointed us. It really all depends on the day, but the line can get long, but also can go by very fast anyways. There are so many different options to choose from and there's no way there isn't a flavor you wouldn't love. Their serving portions are very generous and are 100% worth it for the price. Summers here and the longest lines await you even at closing time that's 10pm. My review before and after has nothing changed except adding to use the call ahead feature and order your ice creams/hurricanes 15-20 mins ahead and utilize the pick up ONLY window. You can find a hundred different flavors to packed in a sugar cone, cake cone, waffle cone (dipped in chocolate), or a waffle bowl. 5 different toppings are offered of carmel, strawberry, marshmallow, and hot fudge topped with whipped cream, then topped with a cherry. Today, I ordered the Hot Fudge Brownie Sundae in a cup. I chose the salted carmel ice cream with chunks of chocolate and carmel. It was piled high with ice cream and topped off with tons of whipped cream and finally nuts and a cherry. Sigi ordered two scoops, one of pistachio, and the other was salted caramel topped with whipped cream in a bowl. Jeanie ordered 2 scoops of chocolate piled high in a cone. I made a mess of my white blouse, but it was delicious. Sigi liked hers as well, and Jeanie too, but she couldn't keep up with the melting ice cream cone, being we were sitting outdoors in the 90° heat. We arrived just before a group appeared behind us. Be prepared to stand while you wait to place your order. There are benches close by on the side of the building to sit on afterward. I love their ice cream. Handel's ice cream is waaaaay too good considering it is a nationwide chain! How do they maintain such excellent consistency everywhere? I have no problems with the ice cream itself. My strawberry cheesecake hurricane with added reeses pieces was great and at 5 bucks for a "small" is better than DQ, but I hate how, at this location, it is walk-up only! Who wants to sit in their car, shoveling quickly melting ice cream in their mouth like a loser? I'm sure I'm not the only person who wants to have their sweet treat sitting down inside the actual ice cream store. Lines can typically get pretty long during the summer, but we were met with a short wait midweek and fast service. I typically have an amazing experience, but last night was met with an overflowing and messy milkshake that had ice cream dripping down the sides of the cup. It's awesome to know you're getting your money's worth, but I would rather not deal with sticky hands and was surprised they wouldn't clean the mess up before serving it (hence the lower stars given for this location/specific experience). The manager needs to take a few courses in customer service. I specifically asked before placing an order if I could just get 2 scoops... each a different flavor in a waffle cone. He said "absolutely" only to later tell me he would have to charge me for 3 and a half scoops because that was their smallest size. I guess his mind was blown that someone did not want 3.5 scoops of ice cream? I knew exactly what I wanted until I made it to the order window and observed all of the wonderful flavors to choose from. It was so much fun thinking about what to order! Spur of the moment I decided to stop by on a hot summer day and give it a go again... what have I been missing?!? I always love the walk up windows in the summer time. The staff are great, great attitudes even with long, trailing lines, and get your treats out to you fast and with a smile. My partner, my daughter and I got the sampler which is 4 ice cream scoops in different flavors. We tried blueberry cobbler, pineapple upside down cake, coconut cream pie, and banana cream pie. They were all delicious and the price was very fair at five dollars and some change. Perfect amount of ice cream for us to share! I was a bit surprised by how small the scoops are, at least in the sampler the scoops look like they're from a cookie dough scooper, but we were satisfied regardless, but it is something to make note of. Handel's Homemade Ice Cream is such a part of Central Indiana history that I tend to forget that it is actually a "chain." Located in 10 states, Handel's is particularly popular in the outer ring of Indy - Carmel, Greenwood, Fishers, and Noblesville. I was trying out the nearby Crafters last night and decided to follow up my free pizza from a Yelp Elite event with a chocolate shake from Handel's. The Handel's located at the opposite end of this strip center. It's not a place I visit often simply because it does tend to be a bit out of the way for me. Handel's is a walk-up business (even when there's not a pandemic). There are some benches around where you can sit and enjoy, but essentially you jump in the loosely organized line and wait for a window to open up. Fortunately, the employees are always super friendly and will actively seek out the next person in line. The line can get lengthy - however, it always goes fairly quickly. Handel's offers year-round and seasonal flavors. There are also flavors specific to each location or geographical area. Handel's offers the Hurricane, think a Blizzard or Concrete Mixer, and offers the usual ice cream options plus sherbets and ices. They also have vegan, fat-free/no sugar added, and low-fat yogurt options. Of course, they also have milkshakes. You can order your milkshake extra thick. They're also really good about packing pints for those who want to take that ice cream home to savor later. My fairly modestly sized chocolate shake was a little over five bucks. It's a little steep, but the shake was delicious and it was a nice balance of thick yet drinkable. I drank it on my way home to Lawrence and still had a bit left even when I arrived home. They have dozens of flavor options. Handel's has been around since 1945 when it was started in Youngstown, Ohio. You can check the website to make sure of flavors before you arrive. Generally, I find the experience here quite pleasant. The line tends to be loosely organized - there's not a ramp right here and the line can occasionally go into the parking lot. That makes it a tad difficult for wheelchair users if people aren't hospitable. That's hit-and-miss in this strip center. I've regularly had issues with parking in an accessible spot only to come out and have someone parked on the blue stripes (which is illegal). I also find with this line that occasionally people are super friendly and occasionally get folks who just have to jump the line. Last night's experience was top-notch. I will admit that I'm also not completely fond of the whole walk-up experience, but Handel's does it well and it manages to work. Employees are always friendly. This was a nice addition to my little splurge of a night. While I'm not sure I'd consider this to be a destination ice cream spot, it's definitely a place I'll always stop when I'm in the area. read more
