On the way home from a recent trip to the Cincinnati area, we stopped at Handel's for a sweet treat. We used to have a location closer to us in Pittsburgh, and we very much miss it, so we make sure to stop anytime we are on a trip and come near one! This specific Handel's Ice Cream location is on Feder Road, just down from the Feder and Hilliard Rome intersection. It is close to the business district on Hilliard Rome, but just far enough off that it is not too loud or busy. The building sits by itself, and can be accessed via Hartford Village Boulevard, or an unnamed road to the right of the store. There is a large sign that sits near Feder Road, so you will know exactly where to go. Since the building sits by itself, there is dedicated parking on both the right side and in the rear. I can see potentially at peak times this being full, but there are other parking lots adjacent to Handel's that potentially could be utilized. Some Handel's locations have an inside, but like most in Ohio, this location is completely outdoors. So, to place your order you simply walk up to the windows, and can then enjoy their bench seating or take your items to-go. When you approach the windows, you will see all of the signage, menu items, and flavors. The overall ambiance here is nice. There is a lot of bench seating and grass area to socialize and enjoy your ice cream at. There is also a fence at the front of the property to prevent anyone getting too close to Feder Road. The building itself is a classic, older Handel's design, that is very recognizable if you are familiar with the brand. They have a very nice, bright mural painted on the right side of the building that brings a lot to the space. Our visit was on a Sunday evening in September, around 6:30 PM. It was not too busy, as it was lightly raining when we stopped. We briefly waited for the few groups ahead of us to order, but then got waited on less than 5 minutes after arriving (including the time we took to look at the menu). The menu had a lot of different flavors to choose from. There were some fall options being that is was mid-to-late September, including Pumpkin flavors! Like all locations, they had cones, cups, milkshakes, sundaes, novelty items, cakes, pies, and much more. My typical order at Handel's is a 4 Scoop Sampler. This is a takeout-like container with four singular scoops of up to four different flavors. It is a great way to try several different kinds of ice cream, or simply when you cannot decide what you want to have. It is a good size if you are wanting a large sweet treat, or to split with someone else. You are able to get anything that is scooped in the 4 Scoop, which includes the sherbets, ices, and other non-traditional flavors. We were not super hungry when we stopped, so my mom, sister, and I shared the 4 Scoop Sampler. For the flavors, we chose Confetti Brownie Batter, Frosted Animal Cookie, Knot Your Average Dough, and Blueberry Cobbler. I had never tried the Knot Your Average Dough before, so I was excited to taste it. The Confetti Brownie Batter and Frosted Animal Cookie were new to my mom and sister, and then the Blueberry Cobbler is a personal favorite for my sister. I really enjoyed Knot Your Average Dough! It is a Cookie Dough-flavored ice cream with a Salted Pretzel Ripple and Cookie Dough Pieces. The ripple was my favorite part, and I would definitely order it again. I am not a huge fan personally of Confetti Brownie Batter (nothing wrong with this one, I just believe there are much better flavors Handel's makes) and Frosted Animal Cookie (in my opinion, does not taste like Frosted Animal Cookies except for the actual cookie inclusions), but both were made well. Blueberry Cobbler had a ton of Blueberry Ripple, and was great. No complaints about the quality or taste of the ice creams! We all enjoyed getting to try some new-to-us flavors. Since it was raining, and were were trying to get back to Pittsburgh, we took our ice cream to-go. Though, I would love to come back and enjoy the outdoor area on another visit. Pricing here was fair. A small scoop will run about $5 after tax. Our 4 Scoop Sampler was around $7 after tax. Most single-serve items are less than $10, so very normal as far as ice cream is concerned. Considering they make all of the ice creams in-house and with high-quality ingredients, I definitely believe the value is there. All of the staff we interacted with were friendly and helpful. As stated, our service was very prompt and quick. I have no complaints about anything relating to the staff or the overall customer service here. Had a great visit to this Handel's location! Service was excellent, the ice cream was all very well-made, the location is clean, and the overall atmosphere is great. Glad that I got to have some delicious ice cream, and check out a different Handel's location. I highly recommend stopping at Handel's if you have never been, or are simply in the mood for some incredible ice cream! read more

Great tasting unctuous flavored PLETHORA of ice creams with huge chunks various cookies, candies etc in every bite. They also don't skimp on the size of their scoops. Wow! This place has some of the best homemade ice cream I have had in a long time. Everything is creamy, rich and fresh. I tried the chocoholic chip and LOVED IT! Handles ice cream was one of my very favorite places to visit when my now husband lived in Indianapolis. So when we ended up in Columbus for a special event a few weeks ago and I realized there was one here, we just had to go! It was about 830 on a Thursday evening in July and there was a short line. With multiple windows open, it probably took about almost 10 minutes before it was our turn to order. Hubby and I both opted for the four scoops sampler, because why wouldn't we? LOL! I went with Graham central station, chocolate peanut butter brownie, spouse like a house and some salted caramel something. Graham central station is my absolute favorite and one of the flavors I always get. Chocolate peanut butter brownie is one I revisit quite often as well. Spouse like a house was one I'd forgotten. My husband remembered that it was the flavor my sister suggested when she recommended Campbell's way back in the day. And the caramel one was the suggestion of the person taking our order. I was very pleased with everything! Their ice cream is so creamy and extra flavorful! I really wish we have one in Dayton or Cincinnati. read more

I was craving chocolate peanut butter ice cream on a Friday night so we decided to adventure out to Handel's in Hilliard. Service was speedy and friendly and the amount of ice cream for the price was great ($3.30 for a small, small is more like a medium). We ended up eating in the car because the benches were full but also they desperately needed to majorly clean the outside seating area. Plastic spoons and other "crap" were everywhere plus the abandoned car wash next door with overgrown grass made it an uninviting scene. We will probably try Powell next time as this location lacked the warm and fuzzy ice cream vibe. read more

Cannot rave enough about Handel's ice cream. There's a reason this place is open all year. They have loyal customers and it shows. I try to change up the flavors each time I go because it's all good. This visit I had a waffle cone with buckeye ice cream. They pile the "small" cone at least 3 scoops high. For the price point and ice cream quality there is no way to be disappointed at this place. Going to throw this out there before I write the review that I was born and raised in Youngstown, Ohio and I'm really biased about Handel's Ice Cream. Continue to read if you don't mind my one sided view on this ice cream spot. Handel's Ice Cream is one of the best spots in Columbus, Ohio. There are plenty of places to go for super fancy scoops with flavors that are way to pretentious for an or cream spot and other respectable contenders to Handel's, but there is only one spot that I always return for a scoop. Handel's has a good set list of flavors, Spouse Like a House and Graham Central Station are both favorites and classics. They also have a seasonal list that changes... seasonally. Plus there's shakes, popsicles, and more to try. Also, the portion and price of a scoop is amazing. If you aren't huge into ice cream you can always split a scoop with a friend, they're that big. If you ever find yourself in Youngstown, Ohio and you want a scoop try the Grape, it's an underrated ice cream flavor that gets no respect. But if you're in Columbus, Ohio and want a different ice cream that's creamy and delicious stop at a Handles and enjoy! September 10, 2019 had the Deep Dish Apple Pie cone and it was delicious! With over 50 flavors, if you can't find something to enjoy, there's no hope for you. Any of these flavors can be made into a delicious shake, or packed into a pint or quart (I won't judge). This was my first time at Handel's after a former coworker from Youngstown insisted I try it for years. Becky was awesome and let me sample my way to the right decision. I went with the banana cream pie and the chocolate/peanut butter ripple and it did not disappoint! It's so creamy and what I like to call "chonky" ice cream--if you like bits of things in your ice cream, Handel's does it right! This is definitely homemade ice cream! There weren't napkins or a tip jar set out and this location could definitely use some tables. Otherwise, great! We also happened to be there on $2 Tuesday so we got extra lucky! read more

More than enough to share with my family although I didn't know it when I ordered so I had way too much ice cream. I don't know what it is about their strawberry ice cream, but it's so good especially for just being strawberry. I haven't been here in awhile but every time I come the ice cream is amazing! I got the strawberry cheesecake crunch for the first time and it was absolutely fantastic! I normally get the coffee chocolate chip and that's outstanding! My mom got the banana split and enjoyed it so much! I'm trying to compare this with Graeter's. It's a nice place, except if it rains. lol Everything is outdoors. That also limits their season to a degree. You also can't turn left into their parking lot. Or turn left when you're coming out of it. As far as flavors go, they have more than Graeters. But I tried two dishes; one of orange sherbet, which I liked more, and one of butter pecan, which I liked less. All in all, I'd say that it's a pretty nice place if you're out in this neck of the woods. read more
