Friendly people, great food, and fast service. I love a local place and the Handi Mart is just that. Fresh, home cooked meats and sides for a value. My son wanted a chicken leg and potato wedges, but the fryer was down. We chose chicken tenders, broccoli casserole, and tater tots as a backup plan. Everything was delicious. The broccoli casserole was the only item I didn't love, but that is more of a personal preference in how I like that item made. This used to be a great place to eat and you never had to worry if the employees would get your order right. Tonight I called in a ToGo order at 7pm and when I check my order they are missing a whole chicken tender plate with fries. When I walk back in with my food a girl pipes up and says, "I missed a chicken tender plate didn't I?" I said yes and the fries. She said well you will have to wait because I have to drop that in the fryer and we were out of fries so I have to drop those too. So she knew she would have to cook that whole plate and chose not to in hopes we wouldnt check our order. And to make matters worse, when I pulled up to get our food this same girl was standing right infront of the entrance smoking a cigarette, what a great look Handi mart!! read more

Another unassuming place out off the beaten path. A local brought us here after stopping into the nearby BBQ joint that was also a must-see. Here he swore the pies were the best thing going. I wouldn't have guessed it by the presentation. But that's southern food for you - never judge the book by its cover. Excellent flavor plated on Styrofoam and wrapped in plastic. We got coconut pie and chocolate pie. I'm not into confectioner's coconut so that was a hard pass. The chocolate pie was light and airy along with the fluffy topping. If the coconut pie was anything like it I'm sure it was good stuff. There were at least 5 other flavors of pie to choose from, including pecan, sweet potato and an Oreo/cookies and cream I now regret not trying. The restaurant had regular food but it seemed so much like a cafeteria buffet that I wouldn't have been interested in eating here, even if I hadn't already eaten a bellyful of BBQ down the road. Prices weren't bad, staff was friendly and the restaurant was clean and decorated tastefully. The patronage stared us out-of-towners down hard when we waltzed in with a bee-line to the pie. The "Ashes of Problem Customers" jar beside the nativity was a ballsy move. I like it. read more

I have been to Handicap Mart several times to eat and have received great service and great food each time I have been. If you go during lunch time be prepared to wait in line but they move pretty quickly due to having two people taking orders, then you move to the end of the counter to receive your order when they call your order number. Go on Thursday and get the chicken and dumplings you won't regret it. read more

Handi Mart is where the locals go for nice home cooking. We eat breakfast, lunch and dinner there frequently. American food. Good selections and food tastes very good. The only thing I wish they'd bring back is good city ham. City ham is the opposite of Country ham. I like ham and eggs for breakfast. They don't serve good city ham anymore. I like a small ham steak. What they serve as city ham now is very thinly sliced sandwich ham. This might be ok for a sandwich but it's no good for a breakfast plate. Nevertheless, everything else we've had is very good. Their glazed donuts are made daily and they are so yummy! There's a case filled with various desserts and you can buy a fantastic homemade pie in the connecting store. You can order take out or eat in. Don't let a line at the counter scare you. There are usually 2 girls at the registers and the line moves pretty quickly. They have daily specials for lunch and dinner posted on the wall. The place is casual and clean. Nothing fancy. Order and pay at the counter. They'll hand you a table card stand with a number on it. Choose a table and place your card on it. They will bring your order to you. There is no waitress service other than that. Condiments at the back near the restroom. If you order to go, you can wait for them to call out your name at the end of the counter. Last but not least . . . They've got the BEST prices in town for such good food. read more

This is a fantastic only in the South mom n pops diner attached to a convenience store. It is country, home style cooking and it is amazing and the place to be in town! Thursdays is my fave day to go, that's "dumplins day". Their dumplins are the best I have ever had next to what my Grandmother use to make. Same with the green beans, I wont eat any but what my grandmother canned and rhese taste just like them, delicious!!! The price of them recently went up but its still a great deal. Friday is hamburger steak day, it is fabulous as well, huge piece of steak. There is a special every week day, M thru F. If you are lucky enough to get there when they still have doughnuts, try one, they are fabulous and only .50 cents each. They are also open for breakfast but I haven't ever gone then so I can't speak on that but your meal will come with a bread choice and I suggest you get a biscuit, its free wirh your meal. I usually buy extra biscuits to take home, worth every penny of the .25 cents each they charge. It can get extremely crowded at peak times and hard to find a parking spot so don't be surprised if you can't find one. Line inside can get really long but it goes super fast, you can be at the end of a line of 20 people and be done in less than 10 minutes. These folks know what they are doing! Their tea is good but I took off one star cause they went from Pepsi products to coke and for me that's one of the worst mistakes a restaurant can make. read more

This place is connected to the Exxon gas station. They have a cafeteria style steam table with four or more vegetable choices and two or three meats, but you can order off the board at the register. The prices are great, two of us ate and had tea for under $16.00! The beef tips tend to be very salty, the fried chicken is good, they have pork chops, chicken fingers, meatloaf, you will probably have to order from the board to get gluten free meats, but they have enough vegetables. They have a ton of desserts. I am partial to the Hawaiian pie. it is an icebox pie, with a sliver of grahmcraker crust, it is full of cherries, pineapple, coconut and pecans! They have home made plain doughnuts, red velvet cake, german chocolate cake, sometimes cookies and bars..they have some whole pies for sale. too much to list. This was my favorite local "home cooking" restaurant for about 5-6 years. About 6-9 months ago, it started a downhill run. Tuesday is Country Style Steak day. Used to be THE BEST! Now, the steak has too much grizzle and they add water to stretch the gravy. Thursday is Chicken and Dumplings day. I call them "chicken flavored dumplings" as there is little to no chicken. Ate here a few weeks ago while visiting my dad. He wanted to go to lunch & suggested this place, noting that everyone he'd talked to said it was just the best, so I agreed to try it since it was supposed to be a "home style" place & was fairly close to his house. That one visit will definitely be my ONLY visit. First of all, you're not in Charlotte anymore, that's for damn sure. I am NOT someone who enjoys that quiet country life. This place....how do I say this without being rude or appearing elitist....this place epitomizes that side-of-the-road small town "home grown" kuntree type of establishment. Filled with locals since that's probably the only ones that know about the place, and perhaps that's the appeal to its customers (which, granted, there were quite a few of). Now don't get me wrong, I love a "local spot" just as much as the next person, but definitely not this type of atmosphere. More the type in a groovy neighborhood like Dish off Central or Cafeteria in Chelsea/nyc. --First, it's attached to the Mini Mart convenience store as evidenced by its name. They couldn't come up with a separate name for the place? Plus, for whatever reason this is just plain tacky. Perhaps that's my snooty side coming out - I dunno. --Second, if you're paying with a credit/debit card, you have to place your order @ the counter with someone that only seems to be half-way paying attention to you & coming off as though this is an odd concept. Once your "receipt" is printed, you then have to GO IN TO THE ATTACHED MINI MART to actually pay since the restaurant does not have a card reader. So now you stand in line with people paying for their gas, beef jerky or case of beer. Once you've paid, you take one copy of that receipt back to the restaurant side to give to the cashier to prove you paid & give them one copy. Again, rather tacky. I mean that's like ordering your food at a Cracker Barrel, going across the way to the gas station to pay, then back to CB to eat your meal. WTF? --Now the food. UNAPPETIZING. I had chicken tenders with mashed potatoes and green beans and a Sprite. KFC's 3pc crispy tender meal is better. And that's not saying much 'cuz I'm not really a fan of KFC either. The tenders tasted kind of institutional--not fresh prepared as you would assume. The beans were too oily for my taste, but they weren't half bad (after adding a little S&P). Giving credit where credit is due, the mashed potatoes w/gravy were quite yummy! I don't remember what my dad ordered, but he wasn't that thrilled with his either; however wasn't altogether as disappointed as I was (he's also nowhere near as picky as I am). My Sprite tasted kind of medicinal--the syrup to water ratio was obviously off on the drink dispenser, but dad liked his tea. In looking at the other items available that day, I can't say that anything looked appealing--for instance the chicken 'n dumplings looked VERY runny, with unusually large flat, square dumplings that looked more like noodles. There was a hefty layer of oil on the mac & cheese...that's not normal. --When you've finished with your local gourmet fare, you take your tray back to an opening in the rear of the restaurant where you pour out any leftover beverage, rake your uneaten food into a bucket, then toss your plate/silverware/etc. into another bucket. Have I made use of the word tacky yet? Overall this place is fine for the local folk, but let's just say I highly doubt there will be any major expansions in the future. If THIS is what someone thinks of as fantastic food, then they obviously don't get out much. Been there, done that, decided to forego the "bought the t-shirt" option! I realize there aren't THAT many dining options in Albemarle, but there HAVE to be better options that the Mini Mart restaurant. I would muuch rather go to K&W or CB for my "home cooking" anytime (plus the cost is the same). read more

Mom and pop diner. It's a hit with the locals. Nothing special but if your hungry and looking for something inbetween fast food and moms cooking this is it. Breakfast is super cheap and lunch and dinner aren't bad either. We are regulars here and glad to have this litttle place! read more

Although I agree with the previous reviewer that the card payment set-up is needlessly frustrating, I think he's gotten his panties in a wad over this restaurant in a gas station. Come on. You can't compare NYC's Chelsea district with Albemarle, NC. This is the thing about Burleson Square - and locals call it that as much as Handi-Mart, so there is another name - it isn't pretending to be hip. It is exactly what it is and it likes what it is. And in my book, that's refreshing. The previous reviewer had the misfortune to choose a dud on the menu, the chicken tenders. The real chicken pieces are better. My favorites: cinnamon apples, cheeseburger, barbecue (they put too much meat on the sandwich, but most people wouldn't complain about that), hamburger steak with grilled onions. Is it as good as home cooking? No. Is it better than fast food? Yes. And for the price, it's fine to pick up whatever's on the menu at Burleson Square instead of wheeling into Bojangles. And I like the ladies behind the counter. They're working their rear ends off so I don't have to. read more

But the best thing about Handi-Mart is that you rarely have to see a sanctimonious asswipe like Daniel B. there. The place is frequented by working people, salt of the earth types. So if you are a pretentious prick (or elitist in his own words) that looks down on working people just stay away. Nobody that eats here wants to see your yellow teeth, balding head, and goofy grin while you look down on them. You're just too cool for Handi-Mart so go back to Chelsea. read more

first of all, this place would never aim to be considered "impressive" to the city dweller. it's not trying to get in some magazine for best local home-grown meal in the greater charlotte area. it does exactly what it set out to do. they feed their regulars and they don't care about newcomers. if you want a good southern vegetable plate or beef tips over rice for $5, this place has mastered it. don't come here expecting to be wooed, come here to be fed a good hearty meal by some sweet southern ladies for really cheap.
