A must stop for both dinner and Southern breakfast enthusiasts On my way home from Charlotte, I used Yelp to find me a classic diner to start my day off right. I choose the Crack of Dawn Diner in Concord. I am so glad I did. Crack of Dawn Diner is the real thing--a local Concord breakfast-and-lunch spot serving traditional Southern fare at reasonable prices. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The menu caters to local tastes, the dining room is filled with regulars, and the atmosphere is comfortable rather than trendy.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Parking is somewhat limited. The private lot surrounding the restaurant was fully used so I parked in the lot next door that had signs that said private property, but it looked like other patrons were parking there also so I took the chance. As it turns out, it was safe to park there. The entrance is very welcoming, as well as the staff. Amanda was my very efficient and nice waitress. There is great teamwork here, and Amanda was well supported by, I believe, the owner who ran my food out and talked a bit with me. The menu is fascinating. A distinctly North Carolina menu. Several things jumped out: * Breakfast special for $6.59 weekdays * Breakfast plates mostly under $12 * Grits included as a side option * Livermush available * City ham and country ham both offered * Pork chops available for breakfast I ordered the country-fried steak with white gravy (essentially chicken-fried steak), along with two sunny-side-up eggs, perfectly prepared grits, a large buttermilk biscuit, and a delicious diner coffee. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant occupies a stand-alone building with a warm, "come on in and rest a spell" atmosphere. Inside, you'll find counter seating, an open kitchen, and tables throughout the dining room. I chose a seat by the window overlooking the parking area.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] This was a great breakfast, that was reasonably priced, in a great atmosphere, with very nice people. It stuck to both my mind and ribs all day long. After breakfast, I continued on to downtown Concord and spent some time exploring one of North Carolina's most charming revitalized downtown districts. If you like bland and straight from the chef store ordering, this is the place for you. I ordered a lazy nacho salad thinking it would be like a taco salad, well it was canned unseasoned corn, 8 overly fried tortilla chips, dry preshredded cheese, thick cut lettuce but the white parts, and chili which was alright but could have also been from a can. I also ordered a side of green beans, they were also straight from the can. I also received a sweet tea, which was good but also how do you mess that up? And the kicker, $18 for that... should have stayed home. I was really hopeful for this place but after trying it twice and it was just as bland, I unfortunately will not be back. read more

There were a couple annoying things that could be improved upon, however. First, the grits are just standard water-based grits. I've come to expect diner grits to be creamy, but these are not. Second, the pricing is upcharged. You can get a discount for paying cash, but who really does that these days? Finally, the orange juice tasted like it came from a jug and did not seem fresh-squeezed. Other than that everything tasted like we expected. Overall, pricing seemed in line with what you would expect. We wanted some breakfast, yet we didn't want to travel far. This diner popped up, and who to be the owner, greeted us and said we could sit anywhere we wanted. As we sat there, a steady stream of regular came in either to dine-in or grab & go. The presentation of the food brought me back to my grandparents' house. The bowl is the same one I grew up eating from. While it was a good portion, I would have liked more seasoning. This is a true Breakfast & Brunch restaurant. We visited on a Monday morning. This restaurant is located in the old Grandma's Diner spot. The paved parking lot is a decent size, but there is also a gravel lot next to the restaurant as well. When you walk in, grab a menu at the door and seat yourself. They offer a few booths, bar seating, and plenty of tables for small or large groups. If you move a couple tables, you can comfortably fit a group of 10 people. This place gives all the local, small town vibes. Although it was our first time, the staff spoke to us like old friends. I also observed them greet a few regulars like family. I ordered the classic breakfast plate. It comes with two eggs, a meat, a biscuit or toast, and one side. It's a really good amount of food and everything tasted great. I wouldn't change a thing. The coffee was pretty good also. The service was great. Our server was so kind and very attentive. The bathroom was very clean. Bummed does not adequately describe my feelings. But I remember that this restaurant always pops up when I'm searching for breakfast places. We ordered a rice bowl with chicken (I don't eat a lot of meat so I got it on the side. Got a side of fruit which was fresh and yummy. My mom got chicken and waffles. Two nice size juicy pieces of boneless fried chicken with about four little mini waffles. My Mom devoured it. My rice bowl had onions, fried corn, pinto beans and jalapeños. Delicious, I had leftovers. It would make me so happy if they added sautéed mushrooms but I'd definitely order again. Nice crowd. Started to thin out about 2. I took my wife out for breakfast to celebrate her birthday and wanted to treat her to something away from Charlotte. This place was about a 35 minute drive but well worth it. Ventured out for breakfast to a relatively new place in Concord. AND WOW! What a great experience. The diner is very clean and inviting. We were greeted as soon as we walked in the door by so many smiling staff members and seated by a lovely lady we found out later was the owner. There are plenty of 4 top tables but really only one to seat a large group of 6-8 unless you hit it at the right time where they could push a few together. Our waitress was delightful and offered suggestions when needed. She brought our food out hot and as ordered with a normal wait time. All of it was really good but the biscuits were deee-lish!!!! They weren't tall but they were buttery, salty and light. And if you're southerner or a southern wanna be like me, you know that hits all the marks!! The pancakes were also very light and tasty. We were checked on several times by the sweetest ladies which added to our experience. The BEST French fries I have found in the surrounding area, I now ask for them extra crispy (preference) however they're still fantastic without the request. Stacked club sandwich that never misses. Another favorite between my husband and I is the fried bologna sandwich - usually we split the sandwiches for the best of both worlds. He loves the okra and especially loves the ranch. My husband and I stopped in for brunch because we love supporting local businesses. We came to town for a concert last night and stayed nearby. We have three large dogs and we didn't want to crate them again while we ate. We looked for a local breakfast/brunch place and happened upon this restaurant. They have to-go options so, with dogs in tow off we went. It's a small building but inside it's bright and cheery. I noticed on the door going inside that it's a woman owned business so this was a fantastic choice. I was greeted with a smile and I'd assume it was the owner that processed my check. We had waffles, French toast, eggs, hash, and a burger with onion rings, and everything was delicious. The staff is incredibly friendly. Too many places have forgotten the importance of service with a smile, but there is no shortage of that here. The place is bright, and clean, and that includes the bathrooms.
