And…read moreso, when we had wood rot on our balcony beam replaced, I was not excited to get it figured out. I read many reviews on Yelp, and after evaluating many contractors, I decided to use Yelp's project tool to contact Clark Innovative. When you do this, you get responses from many other companies too. Many reached out before Chris from Clark did. I ended up making an appointment with one of them to have them take a look at it. This person began has contract biz recently... and he did not seem confident. The way he was looking at it, he was reacting in a way that seemed like it's a bit of a pain in the you-know-what job and said it was going to cost a lot. He was a nice guy, but he did not instill confidence in me that he knew what he was doing. (He never even sent me a bid) After that, I wondered if I should reach out to these other companies that responded, but my intuition was telling me to wait a bit longer. Clark did eventually respond with apologies, and made an appointment to come look. They looked at it and just the way he was acting, I could tell this person knew what they were doing, and they came up with a solution to just replace the rotted portion, saving us half the cost! (So yeah, I believe the innovative part of their name!) It was all incredibly reasonable. Dates were pushed back etc, because of rain and other things, but I honestly didn't mind it. Chris tried to be a good communicator, and even when he wasn't, I could contact him and he'd respond. He was just busy. Sometimes, you can just tell with people who is being genuine. Who wants to simply do a good job for you, without gouging you or ripping you off. We need more of these people in the world right now. I'm glad I listened to my intuition, and waited for the right company to do the job. And I will definitely use them again for future work. It's really nice to have a good contractor in our back pocket.

Nick is a licensed general contractor and extraordinary carpenter with a great eye for detail. He is classically trained with a BFA in sculpture from University of the Arts in Philadelphia and exhibit buildout at SFMOMA. He checked all the boxes at our first on-site meeting and revisits. He was on time, on budget, an excellent listener and terrific communicator, highly skilled craftsman and problem solver, true to form with the best tools and matching materials, self-proclaimed nit-picky perfectionist, fine finish matching and all around nice guy. Nick is honest, quick to respond, perfect on the details, has very high standards, and is very caring and positive, gracious and modest. He used the existing design not reinventing the wheel and most likely would have improved the gateway design given the chance. Nick is an exceptionally talented contractor with many years of creative problem solving. To repeat, he has a great eye for detail and sculpted, integrated, seamless design with unique elements evidenced by his extensive portfolio. I never felt the need to micromanage him. He is terrific at remote site communication and management. We live in the East Bay and the owner is in Hawaii which adds a level of complexity to remote destination work. Subpar tile work in a remodeled shower and bathroom floor. Water puddles in shower floor and the…read morebase looks waved and uneven. Doorframe not even close to square. Grout has areas that don't match. Replaced the strip between the tile and carpeting in the bedroom because it pulled up immediately, but cracked the replacement strip installing and asked " do you want me to fix that"l?" Many tiles aren't flush on the shower wall. Poor craftsmanship all around.

The quality and care of the work was totally shoddy, careless, non-functional and non- durable. The price was completely disproportionate. My friend who looked at the work described it as having been "phoned in" on a toy plastic Mickey Mouse phone with a fake rotary dial. One example- the installation of a washing machine drain connected only with duct tape and without a standpipe, so water leaked all over the floor the very 1st time the washer was used. Another example: Repair of a redwood gate using a piece of interior trim (not redwood and not waterproof). I wasn't sure how/if it was attached to the rest of the gate so I pulled on it gently and it started to come of in my hand. It was only attached with a few staples (not strong or waterproof). My mistakes: 1. I did not read other reviews, especially the one where Kelly responds to an unhappy client with "I know who you are and I know where you live". 2. That I let him do these super simple projects without me supervising and telling him not to use the wrong materials, not to attach moving parts in a wet environment with tape and staples and not to make the work disfunctional, weak and ugly. My bad.

BACKGROUND: We wanted bookshelves installed above a built-in cabinet unit in our living room. I sent Jitendra a sketch and described what we wanted. From my chicken-scratch sketch, he created a design and mock-up, then measured our space. While measuring, he flagged all existing flaws in the space (uneven/slanted walls) so that we were aware of all inconsistencies upfront. He has amazing attention to detail! RESULTS: We were simply blown away by how well he was able to match the custom shelves to our existing unit; all of the wood looks like it was manufactured at the same time! It truly looks like it was all constructed as one piece from the very beginning, which is exactly what we wanted. In addition, we really appreciate that he took initiative to incorporate crown molding/extra detail on the top of the shelving unit. This is something that I would never have thought to do. WHY YOU SHOULD HIRE HIM: There's good reason why the word "artisan" is in the name of this business.
