My sump pump was burst and needed to be replaced. Got a very reasonable quote from Will for replacing the pump with a top rated zoeller pump. On the day of the installation Tom showed up at 7:45am (15 mins early) and started work. He immediately noticed that there was no check valve on the pipe exiting the sump-pump. He told me that the by building code it needs to be there and that he can install it if needed. He also gave me the option to not install it if I didn't want to but warned me that it wouldn't pass inspection. I originally thought it was an attempt to upsell so I told him to hold off. I quickly did some online research and it looked like it was indeed needed. Meanwhile Tom consulted with Will and let me know how much it would cost me. Since I had just done the research I knew the price was well below what I found online so I told him to go ahead. He did not have the part on him so he had to go to Home Depot to get it. In the meantime Will showed up and they both started working together on the job. After the installation, while they were testing proper functioning of the pump, we noticed that the water was being pumped out extremely slowly. Will quickly realized that there had to be some blockage at the final outlet. The pipe actually ran outside, under my patio to the side of the house. Luckily I remembered the general area where it drained. Will got down and dirt and started digging up the mud to get to the pipe. After finding it he had to yank out a whole lot of muck from inside it until the water was free flowing and the sump pump was pushing out the water at full speed. At this point what was suppose to be a 2 hour job had become a 4 hour job but Will did not charge me anything more than what was agreed upon. I was so happy with their work that I had another job in the house that I had been procrastinating on and I asked Will if he would be interested in taking care of it for me. It was replacing my broken kitchen faucet with the new one that I had got from Costco. He was more than happy to do it. The price he quoted was yet again reasonable. He got Tom to knock it off while he finished up with the pump installation. I was extremely happy with Will and Tom's work. Extremely professional, honest to the core, very reasonable, totally friendly and not to mention quite funny! Will had me in splits quite a few times with his perfectly timed quips as well as banter with Tom. Very highly recommended!

In an attempt to have my house perfect for my parents visit last year we had Will out for a VERY loooong-list of jobs ( power washing/ sealing/ deck and fence repair, toilette repair etc etc etc) I noticed after he left he was kind enough to throw in a pressure wash of our front walkway so that it looked nice and new for my parents visit! Then, earlier this week, we had a horrible plumbing fiasco at our home. Without going into graphic detail, let's just say it was a really crappy situation that required IMMEDIATE attention. Will at House Call Contracting was able to rearrange his schedule to be at our house within two hours, and he coordinated and oversaw the effort to fix the problem over the following three days. In addition to being able to fix anything, Will is responsible, courteous and shows up ON TIME!!! I really can't imagine ever using another plumber/contractor.

But, I felt like the company exploits the hourly fee by including unloading their car, loading it back up (in multiple trips) and whatever the hell paperwork is happening on the ipad. I'd estimate that we paid an extra $300 or so for things that they do to try to add time. Some of the work took far longer than it should. Somehow our tech spent two hours installing less than 2 feet of floor molding, when we already had it. So, we paid like $400 something for what should be maybe a $150, or max $200 project. Plus they look for other ways to make a project take far longer. When we had to order a door, the staff was like "we'll pick it up for you from the warehouse" -- it was 45 minutes away from our home and would have cost us hundreds, when it turns out the company they purchased it from could easily deliver it for $7. Hambelton didn't even give me that option til I fought for it. I also told our tech not to bother doing certain things (like clean), and since he insisted, I offered our own shop vac, and he refused to use it, instead going down to his car to get more of his own tools/supplies. So cool, another $50 for some cleaning that would have taken me like 2 min. There was even dumb stuff, like the company made me pay for our tech's parking meter because the contract (which you don't sign until after paying the non refundable deposit, says that you must guarantee parking for your tech). It wasn't necessarily about the money there, it was just annoying that they cannot accept the cost of doing business. For that reason, I'm not sure I would use Hambelton again. I don't mind paying for good work, but, again, this just felt exploitive. But, if you truly don't care about price, Hambelton was reliable, and did good work (which, admittedly is rare for handymen).

Simply based on the method of contact per their website and the return reply I received initially through a weird call and then through text, my confidence in the company shattered quickly. Miscommunication happens. I get that, so I decided to overlook the odd communication and unconventionally low-tech operational coordination and let them see whether they could & would help me out. I already knew it wouldn't be a tough job yet still needed help. I wanted to see whether they really are interested in providing service to those genuinely in need rather than only cherry-picking high yield jobs. The result? They failed in their interest to help as well. Zero follow-up...and I mean completely vacuous! From the scary observation of the drive up to my home & carelessly blocking my neighbor's driveway when parking...to the cold fish & flippant reply to a simple comment and inquiry while I explained the brief history of the issue, I remained completely unimpressed by this company. I am thankful that I was able to dodge a bullet when they failed to follow up because if they only demonstrate preferential selection for jobs (and wasting a customer's time when they have no intention of taking the job in the first place), then I say to you, the customer valiently doing your due diligence, be very cautious if selecting this company to do the work with which you need help. They may have been great at what they did during the company's prime years for some customers, however, now at the time of this writing, if you are a fan of both customer service and quality work, perhaps search elsewhere.
