Lauderdale at the Pelican Grand, we enrolled our boys in Funky Fish day camp for a day of our stay. The instructor taught the boys about local ocean life, utilizing a student-interest-led way of teaching. Then they went to the heated pool and learned how to snorkel. Once they knew how to snorkel, they headed to the ocean to combine their new snorkeling knowledge with their lesson on local ocean life. Snorkeling sessions were interlaced with body boarding and building sand castles. My kids loved it so much they didn't want to leave when it was over, and are still talking about the fish they learned about at camp.

That says so much about the leadership and care they provide. My girls have learned so much here, they are even bilingual! The teachers are incredibly caring, attentive, and genuinely make you feel like family. You can feel that they truly love what they do. From the Owner, Mr. Rodolfo, to the Director, Ms. Aida, the leadership is hands-on, professional, and compassionate. I am so grateful we found this school. JA Company Program was the first program offered after school to high school students. In 1975 Project Business was introduced in class to middle school students. Today Junior Achievement has over 100 local JA Areas across the country. They are the largest organization dedicated to giving young people the skills for financial success through in school and after school programs or with visits to their centers like this one on the Broward College Campus. I have a long history with Junior Achievement. While in college I taught one of their courses to elementary school students. When my daughter was in elementary school I chaperoned on her fifth grade field trip to JA Biz Town. Now I accompany a new generation of fifth grade school children on their field trips. Local businesses like Truist Bank and Rick Case Automotive sponsor the store fronts that are set up like a mini city in the building. Students learn skills like how to purchase items, bank, budget, and write a check. Best of all they have a great time learning financial skills. If you have free time to spare they always need volunteers and it is very rewarding. Follow them on Facebook to see the latest happenings. Junior Achievement is such a great resource for the community. We are truly lucky to have them in our backyard.

Located at The Walk in Coral Springs, it is a wonderful resource for local families--not only mothers. Parents can work, enjoy coffee, or connect with others while their children explore a clean, engaging play space filled with books, toys, climbing and jumping activities, and even a STEM lab. They also offer classes, camps, birthday parties, event rentals, coworking space, and parenting resources. It is truly much more than a play center and such a great place for families to have right here in our community!

With much hesitation, I write this to warn other parents, who like me, we fooled by the beautiful…read moreschool, Montessori/Reggio Emilia style toys and approach, and great advertising. This is a KLA franchise location, and if you have heard about the wonderful KLA corporate locations in Miami - This. Is. Not. It. Within the first 5 months of school, 4 children were withdrawn from a class of approximately 10/12 because of issues with the school and staff, and I know many others wanted to but simply had no alternative childcare. I write this because I wish I was warned before enrolling my child. Big issues first: this school lacks security. We were assured someone would always be at the front desk, monitoring who came in and out, though consistently when I picked up my child, the door was locked but no one was at the front. This is an issue because anyone coming out can hold the door open for a "parent" waiting outside. I withdrew my son after grandma went to pick him up, was let in by a cleaning lady, and was not stopped or asked for her ID or who she was until she was almost out the door with my child. There's no communication with parents. We were promised weekly reports with pictures, and daily reports with diaper changes, etc, but I can count on one hand the times I received this in 6 months. The teachers and staff are not properly trained. My child choked and threw up as a result while eating his lunch and the assistant "director" did not deem this "important" enough to call me. Further, at the beginning of the school year, the Nido class only had one permanent teacher. The parents were assured that an assistant teacher would be hired "soon" but that did not happen until late December. Even though there was only one teacher, new students continued to be enrolled to the classroom every week, and depending on the number of students present that day, a substitute teacher from an agency would be called in to help. The parents never knew who was going to be watching their children - and very often when the permanent teacher called out sick, they were left at the care of substitutes that were not trained in the KLA method or knew anything about the school or the children. This is just a glimpse into the many problems we've had at KLA Fort Lauderdale. I hope something changes - the school does have great potential. But I was not willing to risk my child's well being until they got it together. Please take this for what it is: our experience in one classroom. But be cautious of overarching issues like security and training that need to be fixed ASAP.
