I visited Hangout Fruit Juices & Bites and ordered "French Fries" (item #42 on the menu). When my order was served, I received Kimchi Fries instead. I asked the cashier to clarify and was told: "If you want plain fries you must say 'French Fries only.' Here if you say 'French Fries' we do the kimchi version. Plain is for kids." The menu, however, simply lists "French Fries" with no mention of kimchi or needing to say "only." I ordered exactly what was printed. It would have been appreciated if the staff had acknowledged the confusion and offered an apology rather than placing the responsibility on me. I ended up paying again for plain fries. So... I wouldn't say this place is great but I'd definitely say it's in the top for Vietnamese street food snacks. I ordered the Vietnamese pizza, Fried quail Balut in Tamarind Sauce, and the Rice paper salad for my lunch and also ordered the Vietnamese iced coffee (not pictured). Everything was very inexpensive so that was a plus and out of the foods the salad and the pizza were tied. The pizza wasn't as crispy as I would have liked, and I made sure to eat it immediately since that's what I was informed to do, but the filling was very yummy. The salad was flavorful but the "noodles" were rather tough and gummy at the same time which told me they had been sitting like that for some time. The quail balut was a totally new food experience for me, which I'm glad I tried, but I probably won't eat on purpose again. The sauce was very good and I'd put that on anything. The Vietnamese coffee actually tasted more like melted coffee icecream as it was sweeter than most coffees I have had in the area. But the thing is, I can't really complain because the cost was cheaper than most places anyways. The service was wonderful. The girl behind the counter was very nice. I have to say I'm disappointed. Their dishes tasted bland. It seemed they don't use salt at all. I also ordered the pennyworth coconut drink. It tasted bland as if they forgot to put sugar. I'm not impressed at all with this place. I even took extra step to give the owner input. It was a mistake. They don't even appreciate it. As for the drink, I chose the honey citron tea. I really liked it, however the bits of the cumquat could have been filtered out a little bit. The fries itself were good, thin crisp and crunchy. The sauce was plain mayo (not even spicy mayo) and I had to "doctor" it up by adding sriracha. The meat was not bad, usually the meat sucks in the fries (elsewhere) and everything else would mask that. The kimchi was a small pile in the corner of the box, and there wasn't an egg like I saw in some of the pics nor did I see it on the menu to be added. It was pretty sad looking. Ambiance: First off, the decor is nice and clean. I like how they offer a wide range of Vietnamese street foods and drinks that are very nostalgic to me. Definitely a plus! They also have jenga, playing cards, and other games for groups to have fun together. Food: We ordered banh bot chien, fried calamari, banh trang cuon, and kimchi fries. I would rank them in this order: banh trang cuon, kim chi fries, fried calamari and banh bot chien. I mean the first three items were very decent. I was not impressed with banh bot chien at all. In fact, I'm still on a quest to find a place in Houston that offers the nice, crispy on the outside yet fluffy from the inside bot chien that I remember having in Vietnam... Vietnamese street food! Banh trang nuong (grilled rice paper) is all the rage right now in Vietnam so I knew that Houston would probably be the only city in the US outside of California that would have it and I wasn't disappointed. Stumbled upon Hangout and was delighted with a full street food menu. Granted, I haven't tried street food in Vietnam so I don't have anything to compare it to but my fobby boyfriend has so we came here to snack! The banh trang tron (rice paper salad) was pretty on point. The hot vit lon xao me (duck egg with tamarind) was alright, the sauce is on the sweet side, but overall no complaints. The Banh trang nuong was decent -- not sure what they put inside but my recommendation is to eat this quick before it gets soft/soggy! Located in the Kim Son plaza, it's near Tony Thai. They have cute interiors and a nice atmosphere. Not too spacious but plenty of tables outside and inside. I usually get their fruity teas such as berry blast or mazing mango. It has bits of fresh fruits in it. In some of their drinks, they have this cream cheese jelly that was pretty interesting and tasted really good. They also a variety of Vietnamese food and snacks. One time, I got their banh trang tron, not the best but decent taste. Recently, they added these lightbulb drinks which is basically any drink in a lightbulb. It's about 5-6 dollars. Came back for round 2 with my sister and we were looking for some drinks and little snacks to munch on. CORN MILK I liked this drink. It was interesting. I liked the thick consistency and the corn flavor. It wasn't overly sweet and had nice aroma. WATERMELON FRUIT JUICE The watermelon wasn't very sweet and they added sugar. It didn't have that thick consistency I was looking for when you use just blend watermelon. It tasted as though they added some artificial flavoring. Not my favorite. BERRY BLAST I really liked this drink. It had a nice sweetness and it was refreshing. The jelly added some nice texture and I love the basil seeds. It was very fruity and perfect for a hot day. TAMARIND My sister ordered this and I was surprised by how much flavor that was in here. It was sweet and tart. I really liked the peanuts because it gave it a crunchy texture, but also gave it another layer of flavor. It's definitely a very different drink with jam pack flavors. STEAMED BUNS- pork belly, fried chicken, and bulgogi The PORK BELLY was disappointing. There was nothing special about the flavors. The sauce and lettuce didn't serve any purpose and the presentation was unappetizing. The FRIED CHICKEN bun was the best out of the three, but it was still lacking in flavor. It was moist and lightly seasoned, but I'd rather eat it on its own then with all the unnecessary ingredients that came with it. The BULGOGI was dry and very chewy. I didn't like it at all.The lettuce and mayo was messy and didn't even taste good with the meat. I wouldn't order these buns again. FRIED TOFU The tofu was only slightly fried. It didn't have that nice crispy skin, but if you like original textures of tofu then I would recommend this. It's slightly seasoned and not too salty. If I want something light then I might order this again. FISHSAUCE CHICKEN WINGS This was disappointing because the wings didn't really have that fishsauce flavor. Overall good service. We got what we ordered even with some special requests. Peach smoothie no added sugar was a hit as the peaches were ripe and made fresh when we ordered it. The taro smoothie was a bit too sweet for my liking. I wouldn't recommend sticking around as the food odor is a bit strong and the seating uncomfortable.
