Yay! Childhood memories! We came here after already being super full from dinner but my brother JUST HAD to eat more. So my boyfriend and barely made a dint in our traditional snow ice with red beans, grass jelly, flan and peanuts. What we did taste was exactly how it should taste, which is awesome. The kids enjoyed their new hippie rolled ice cream it seemed like but I was too full from dinner #1 to even try theirs. The only reason this place gets a 4 instead of 5 is because the place is really small and kind of dirty. The food taste the same and is fine though. I'll be back if not in a rush to get to places/ between work locations. The vermicelli was okay, but I wouldn't come back to this restaurant for it. The cantaloupe drink sucked. I couldn't even bring myself to finish it during my commute back to Austin. They are proud of their no artificially flavored syrup claim, by claiming that they don't use the "fake stuff", but that's just code for putting a tiny amount of fruit with some powder and syrup. Though the word "syrup" is instead substituted for "fruit concentrate" to make the drink sound like it's better than it actually is. Believe me as someone who has worked at two different bubble tea shops in the past. Parking sucks. It's Bellaire Blvd. The best time to go is during the mid-afternoons from 3-4. Every now and then, I decide to indulge in some carb sin. My quest for sugary drinks landed me at star snow ice. There were so many choices, and I found myself overwhelmed. After staring at the menu for about 10 minutes, and watching other drinks being prepared and served, I finally opted for the Lychee snow ice milk drink. Lychee happens to be my favorite fruit, but seeing all these other drinks being prepared, kept throwing off my decision. But at the end of the day, I made the right choice. The line was kinda long, but it went by smoothly and efficiently. It actually was fun being in line, as I was able to observe other drinks that were being prepared to help me with my next visit. I loved my drink. It had a good tooty fruity lychee flavor with plenty of tapioca balls in the drink. It was a pure delight but pretty sugar friendly. They have some amazing shave snow ice too. First time to this location and it was a true disappointment. I used to visit its first location at the Welcome supermarket center. The weather was cold and I ordered hot grass jelly with peanuts, mochi, and taros for to go. I ended up eating there and the grass jelly was lurk warm. It was about 75% full and I wonder why it's not filled up more. It still had some room and it won't spill. Guess the cold ingredients made the jelly warm and didn't taste good at all. I'd rather come here than at Dun Huang Plaza. I was amazed to see a huge (as compared the front of store) area behind the production counter. First, I select an item from the cooler (I have trouble reading from the glowing menu board). Second, the server prepares the ingredient in a blender cup. He/she add a spoon of powdered flavor and ice cubes. Then, the cup is on the blender whole he/she put tapioca balls in a cup. Finally, my drink is assembled in front of me. Giving them 1 star because the crispy pork was the only thing that was good here. I ordered the spicy crispy tofu and it wasn't even super crispy at all. All I tasted was the sogginess. I also order the Szechuan noodles and I don't understand why they named it that. There is no Szechuan taste in it whatsoever; instead, it taste just like they poured nasty peanut sauce all over the noodles. I think what disgusted me the most was that this place was not sanitary at all. The person that was bringing out the food was also cleaning, wiping tables, and pushing the busing cart. Great little gem. Food and drinks are a great value. We almost always grab a plate (at least) of the appitizers calamari. our go to drinks are the cheap but delicious thai teas for 2.50! Can't beat that. Coffee float with coffee jelly is also one of my regular orders here. It comes with a scoop of ice cream in the drink! Yum! WARNING for people with food allergies: This past weekend my daughters and I ordered a plate of mango shaved ice with various toppings. The shaved ice was good but thank goodness I checked it before I let my daughter eat it. Even though we listed our food allergies of peanuts, nuts, and kiwi...they mistakenly added peanuts to our order. When I brought it back to the counter to return my order because it had contained peanuts and my daughter was allergic to peanuts, they tried to deny our request and said they could just remove the peanuts from the plate. I had to explain to them that we wanted a new one made because the peanuts had already touched the other food items and we needed to return it because it wasn't just a matter of a food preference but because it was a food ALLERGY and my daughter could end up in the hospital if she ate anything that touched the peanuts (which has happened before). They didn't seem too happy to remake us a new one but again, it wasn't our fault. We had listed the allergy items in our order yet it was added on as a topping. So please be careful ordering food from this place if you have a food allergy. I think the employees there need to be trained and more informed on how to prepare and handle food allergies. I used to frequent Star snow ice but at another location closer to me, and I felt like being nostalgic and drinking a Thai tea (which was my regular at Star snow).The place is super small and cozy. I was greeted right away, and my drink didn't take too long to get ready. The fruits looked so appealing as I waited for my drink! They looked so fresh and colorful haha. I remember why I used to come to Star snow ice and it's because of their price point. The drinks are very reasonable! Like super cheap compared to other tapioca spots. Yay! I absolutely bummed when the original location by the Welcome grocery store closed for relocation, but three months later, here it is! This spot is easy to get to and is in the shopping complex by Jusgo grocery. The new location's interior is certainly updated compared to the old cafe, but features the the same drink menu we all love. While they still do not serve hot food (which you can easily enjoy at their sister location by Dun Huang Supermarket & KTV), you can still count on them for refreshingly delicious tapioca and milk tea. Even though there's no nostalgia associated with this location, its nice to see that the same staff that we've come to know over the years are also a part of this Star Snow cafe. While I feel that my regular drink was made to perfection, the shaved snowflake ice was apparently not as amazing as the SSI#1 or the SSI&T by the Beltway. Maybe the beautifully fluffy ice wasn't as flavorful, or perhaps, it was the accompanying diced fruit that wasn't as plentiful or sweet, but given that it's still a brand new business, there's bound to be a few kinks to be worked out. We'll still probably go to both locations, but this one is surely an easier spot to get in and out of when you don't want to bother with the usually hectic intersection and parking lot by the SSI&T location. read more

Now this is how inexpensive bubble drinks are supposed to be! For 2 drinks with tapioca we paid $5 and a little bit of change. Not $7 and certainly not $10. It seems like the only place to get them this cheap is in Chinatown, although with all of the new trendy new pop up places, that's slowly changing as well. This particular location seems to have been remodeled since I was last here, and it looks really nice on the inside, with a place to sit and read or study if necessary. It isn't overly crowded or noisy like some of those trendy places mentioned above. They have the same wide selection of tapioca/pudding drinks and they also do the mix shaved ice desserts. This place will always be my favorite tapioca place! I have been going to the Star Snow Ice in the Welcome shopping center for YEARS and last year I moved to California so I have been deprived. A few months ago, my dad told me that they closed down and I was very sad! Now that I am back in Houston for Christmas, I drove around the area and saw that it relocated to this shopping center!! I was REALLY happy to see that they had the same staff and did some facelifting to the place. It really needed some modernizing since lots of new tapioca places are opening up, and I'm glad that they moved to a location that was easier to see from Bellaire! They make their fruit smoothies with REAL fresh fruits and every time I order my strawberry shake with tapioca..it ALWAYS tastes the same...fresh, sweet, and satisfying! What a treat! It's been years since I've had Hong Tao Peng (that's the name my Cantonese friend has always called it)! In case you've never heard of it, it's a yummy cold dessert made of shaved ice and palm sugar syrup with your choice of numerous toppings. I was surprised to see this at the old Diho shopping center (I'm dating myself). This location feels smaller than the others but the seem to offer a lot of the staples. This is one of the few places where you can still find the good ol bao bing with taro, red beans and etc. They get a star for nostalgia. It's nice to find some remnants of my childhood faves around. The pearl barley was undercooked at my last visit but the taro, sugar syrup and etc were done right! The taro was not the puréed or powdered stuff. It was real taro, chunky yet soft. They mung beans appeared a little overcooked but over is better than under. With all the fixings covered in ice, perfection isn't necessary. I was with a group of four friends and we had ordered some drinks, and snacks as the time passed, but on our second round of drinks we were told they were no longer making veggie drinks, so we ended up having to change our order. Then a few minutes later another group came in to order veggie juice and she (owner?) immediately started to make them all veggie drinks as if our previous denied order never happened. My sister got me hooked on bubble tea (some call it boba tea) more than fifteen years ago and I started going to Star Snow Ice when they were originally located across the street on the other side of Ranchester. In recent years they moved to the DIHO Center which I like much better. Given the other location was bigger and had more tables to seat at this location has condensed their ordering area and tidier and cleaner than before. I always, always get the "milk tea" flavor bubble tea and when I'm feeling adventurous I'll ask for an extra scoop of the tapioca balls. The balls have the right consistency of chewiness and softness to them where I do not find anywhere else. I have tried other bubble tea places but have never found one that I like as much as Start Snow Ice. They have a wide selection of drinks and teas to choose from as well as made to order desserts that include shaved ice and very reasonably priced. read more

Praise $2.75 boba! It's not the best boba in the city but Star Snow Ice doesn't try to be. Instead, the dessert joint serves no-BS, homemade-esque boba tea that is actually pretty decent and isn't too far off from the more expensive options elsewhere. Aside from its value, the boba tea also doesn't leave me thirsty afterwards - an unfortunately symptom that many competitors' boba tea have because of heavy use of creamer. As the name suggests, there are also many shaved ice desserts too! This branch is also not as crowded as the main branch at Dunhuang Plaza, although not as clean either.
