Great little place for authentic Vietnamese food. Don't be surprised if you are the only non-Vietnamese in the place. Tonight I was, but I hung with the brothers to enjoy some of my favorite food. Goi Sua Tom Thit - This is the popular shrimp and jellyfish salad that is lightly tossed with nuoc man. That sweet and savory mixture that is made using fish sauce. I thought this dish was outstanding. The vegetables were fresh and crisp, and the ingredients were perfectly balanced. Bo Luc Lac - Also know as Shaking Beef, this dish is a stir fry of marinated cubes of beef steak. The meat was tender and flavorful. Some Vietnamese people will mix a concoction of lime juice, salt, and pepper to dip the steak in. Don't knock it until you've tried it. Tom Rang Moi - Salt fried shrimp still in their shell is a crunchy delight. The shrimp were large and fried to perfection. I don't eat the tail or the head, but many people will wear it all out. Just be sure to chew well. Rau Muong Xiao Toi - I am told that this green leafy vegetable is very common in Southeast Asia. But it is an invasive species in the US. There are US agriculture regulations to control the growth and spread of it's production. Ultimately this has affected the price of this simple dish. I don't know if this is true or not but it's a conversation starter. I had to withhold the fifth star on my review because the restaurant didn't feel that clean to me. Came here to eat with my dad and his 3 other friends and my boyfriend. The food was alright but service was VERY slow and disorganized. We had difficulty getting ahold of people to order food and they'd forget alot of things because they don't write down our order, just put it to memory and try to remember. They never brought our waters over even after we had asked for it 3 times with 3 different people. I had to go to the counter to get water and even then we wanted to get other things and it never came out so we had to settle with how the food was made without condiments. Food was alright as well, it wasn't special or really grand so I probably won't come back as I wasn't overwhelmed with the quality of the food. Don't be fooled by the other reviews that give this place 4 stars or better because like others have stated. This place is dirty and stinky even by China/Viet town standards. They take credit card but their water and ice were so bad in both the drinks and in food with a high concentration of liquid smells like moldy water lines. This isn't just typical city of Houston gross water-- there is something truly foul in his place's water. It smells up all the food and all over the place. Let's put it this way-- I poured a whole can of coke in their ice. It was undrinkable. Switched out with water only, no ice-- same taste. Tried to eat their cold duck dish and soup.. guess what even with a pallete cleanse (brought my own water to wash it out)-- still smelled and tasted totally off. If you don't smell or taste the dirty then God help you. BTW is my third time herewith different people each time and it's never any better. Why did I come here three times then? We had called in advance for a table of 15, however upon arrival, no table was reserved. We took a table of 8 take until the tables next to us opened up to combine. Food was average and typical like any Vietnamese restaurant in China Town. They have the sugar cane juice that everyone likes. All made/prepared. Can't really say anything unique about the place but had the extensive menu. The family ordered bo luc lac (steak tips), muc rang moui (fried salted squid), banh xeo (viet pancake), bo Thai Chanh (lemony beef), sour fish soup, snails, and the duck. Service was really, really, slow. The staff would disappear for long periods of time and when you try to get their attention, they pretend not to see. Went here with my boyfriend for lunch. They have a giant menu and a nice section for grouped items depending on how many people you want to feed. We ordered the portion for "2 people", which included steamed duck, a fresh salad (goi), catfish and their sweet and sour soup. They gave huge portions of everything and i thought they flavors were almost on point other than being on the sweet side. I've often had com phan here but this time we changed it up. We each ordered our own thing. Our table had the banh xeo, some chao ga, some bun man vit, com tam dac biet, bun bo hue, and mi xao don. I only got to sample the banh xeo and the com tam. The remaining foods looked and smelled excellent but I didn't get a taste. The banh xeo is ginormous and crispy, full of goodness. It stayed crunchy but it was loaded with sprouts and the banh itself was more coconut than I'd prefer on mine. The com tam was extremely good, with the dac biet being full of so many different things. The portion and price are definitely worth it. Based on past visits, I'd have to recommend the com phan though, with shout outs to the canh chua and ca kho to. We ordered the family style combination for 6 people but the food was more than enough for the eight of us. About $60 pretax. While large in portions, the taste was mediocre. I've had better elsewhere. The combination included canh chua (almost a sweet sour soup with lots of vegetables and fish), goi tom & tai heo (shrimp & pigs ear salad), ca kho to (claypot catfish), muc chien (fried calamari), cai lan xao thit bo (Chinese broccoli & beef), and another fried fish I forgot the name of. Service was very slow. There were only about 4 tables, including us and a big round table that was not cleaned up. Where did our servers go? They, as in all FIVE servers, all pitch in to clean up the table leaving no one to attend to any of their customers. Aside from the combination dishes we also ordered a separate dish: banh xeo (Vietnamese crepe) with just shrimp that came with the side vegetables. (You can choose with shrimp & pork.)It was a big crepe, however we only had roughly 4-5 small shrimp in it and what seems to be an unlimited amount of beansprouts inside. I was not a happy camper. The crepe also had a coconut taste for the flour they choose which I wasn't a fan of either. Overall visit 3/5. I will continue to look else for better vietnamese food. read more

This marks the second time in my life, where I had to keep drinking to prevent vomiting. The making of congealed duck blood reminds me of paganism rituals, and a bad attempt at shock and awe. Every bite, even though it didnt taste bad, triggered a sense of digestive tract control. Watching it quiver on the big chip thing you eat it with, looking at other people digging in to something that looks like the leftover on the floor of a butcher shop, makes me look away. The fact this dish exists makes me wonder if evolution is that evolutionary, or have we peaked? Honestly don't know how to review this place as I lost my appetite after 2 attempt. My aunts have been raving how good this place is so we decided to pop in for lunch. It should have a been sign that it was empty at 12:30PM on a Saturday. Our waiter was so out of it when he took our order and we had to repeat our questions multiple times. Our food came out pretty quick, but everything was way too salty. I grabbed my cup on sink water and y'all like no joke my cup smelled like FUNK. It literally made me sick to my stomach. I was thinking it was one of the dishes because we did order pickled cabbage but IT WAS MY CUP. I normally do not order a soda when I go to restaurants but I had to at this place. located where the old Duong Son Quan was (not the one by Duc Hung BBQ), this place has pretty decent food. i go here merely for the convenience (its like 2 seconds from my workplace), the food is pretty decent and standard as far as bellaire asian food goes. it has some specialties, and even those are subpar-standard. i do like the macaroni with rock and roll beef (nuoi xao bo luc lac), but its not the same as sinh sinh or tan tan. the food is overpriced compared to a couple other places in the area, and i guess its supposed to make up for their lack of customers. everytime i come here, whether its picking up togo or to dine in, theres always a lack of customer and a hell of a lot of empty tables. check it out if you're looking for some chao vit (duck congee), or macaroni with rock and roll beef, and youre too lazy to drive further down bellaire. -T read more

Shh...try this place but keep it on the DL. It gets busy most nights so I wouldn't want too many people here, but I thought I'd do my Yelp duty to diversify the clientele and introduce this place to all the foodies out there. FOOD: This is my go-to for Vietnamese comfort food. The family-style options and fixed menu for 4 is great for trying the best Vietnamese food has to offer (i.e. canh chua ca (sweet and sour soup with catfish fillets), clay-pot simmered catfish (my favorite! it comes with small crispy fat squares), refreshing salad, etc.) My sister is a fan of the fried wings with fish sauce on the side to dip (canh ga chien nuoc mam). SERVICE: The service is okay, considering you have to call out for the waiters as they pass by if you want something. But once you place the orders, it's not a long wait till you start seeing your stream of food come in. I give them kudos for that. LOGISTICS: Lots of families come here on the weekends, and while my party of 7 was able to sit down right away, it might be harder to coordinate for larger parties since there were only two long tables that could be pulled together. This place gets packed. It's also further down Bellaire (toward Synott/Dairy Ashford) so a little out of the way if you're coming from the Beltway, but it's worth it for the authenticity of the food! It is a bit of a further drive down Bellaire from Beltway 8. The place was clean relative to most chinatown restaurants. Given it was a Sunday night the place wasn't as busy as it should be. There was a small trickle of people coming in. My party of 7 ordered one of their pre-determined family style combo of various dishes. The food was tasty, authentic Vietnamese food. The price wasn't bad as well. Maybe because we ordered a set of dishes. Service was fast and the food seemed to come out really, really fast. I really don't know how they could have made our food as fast as how our dishes came to the table. All-in-all, I'm not sure if my good service and yummy food was an isolated event. I heard from my hairdresser this place has great "tiet canh" so my husband and I went to try it last week. We love "tiet canh" and been looking for another place since the last 2 times we ate at Tai Loi their "tiet canh" smells like duck's butt. This is the old Duong Son Quan not the one next to the new Van Loi. We had tiet canh, bo` ta'i chanh, and oc huong xao la que. Tiet canh - was great!! it was thick, not watery, not too salty either. Bo tai chanh - this is more like "goi bo`" with lots of onion and chillies. Watch out for those! We didn't like this too much - doesn't have the sourness of bo tai chanh but not the blend of goi either. The sauce "nam nen" is too thick, like they pour it from the bottle. Oc huong xao la que - good portion, the sauce is ok, but we were not too crazy about this one either. The oc is still in the shells so the sauce flavor didn't effect it. We took this to go. I end up taking the oc out, cut up a little bit, saute this with the drained sauce (to not get the shell bits) and bun ta`u. husband said much better. We did came back again but this time it was for "bun mang vit" I like it even though they use fresh instead of dry bamboo shoot. This soup came with a little side duck salad. Hubby got the "mi` vit tiem". He said it was so so, not great but not bad either - he'll prefer to have it at a real noodle chinese restaurant. read more

Very good food and the service was fast. Banh khot is delicious and the hu tieu xao is great. Only complaint- I have a pineapple allergy and we asked if the canh chua to exclude it. They said they could do that but it was cooked in and chunks of it was found in it. Luckily, my allergy wasn't deadly, just very painful. I wish they just told us it was cooked in and could not be excluded. We would have just simply ordered something else. Hands down my absolute favorite place to go for the family meals! I haven't tried the other stuff on the menu but nothing beats the family meals here. It's traditional meals that can be easily home cooked but when you don't know how to, this place nails it. The portions are huge for the price. The prices are unbeatable because it averages out $10 per person +leftovers. 6 huge plates that are estimated to feed a family of four fed my family of five and we still had leftovers! The food is very authentic and just delicious. Even when there's only three of us, we always always opt for the family of four meal because we love the crispy fish with ginger infused fish sauce!! Basically this is the kind of local Vietnamese comfort food family run restaurant that everyone wants in their neighborhood. (Well at least that's my opinion LOL).
