I suppose I should have realized, considering there were 11 very pissy, famished male customers in front of me, upon realizing that I also was starving and not in a great mood, that we were actually re-enacting the movie "12 Hangry Men." There haven't been a lot of very good hot chicken places I've tried. It's a nice concept, but as with everything that takes over the scene like wildfire, and erupts like Mount Etna once did on sicily, hot chicken is often imitated, but very seldom actually perfected. You can find some great versions in Nashville, and here and there around the country, but I'd say 95% are hipster, overpriced, not too special. Very much chain food these days. Along those lines, Hangry Joe's is definitely a chain, not too personal, not too much that separates it from the rest, but still worth a try if you are a fan of this type of food. I've definitely had worse (looking at you Dave's), but it didn't make me run back for more, and I thought Crimson Coward was a little better. Give it a try and decide for yourself! When you're paying $15 and a tip, these need to be upgraded on both counts please. The biggest disappointment is the toast. Got the heel piece, of white bread last night. When competitors offer Texas toasts that exemplify excellence, this heel of white bread from what appears to be the grocery store, ugh. Thank you to the really nice employees. They are all friendly. Came here twice now. I like that their chicken is cooked perfectly with lots of meat and the right amount of breading and crispiness. Their spicy level are truly spicy. So spicy cravers rejoice! I can take a fair amount of spice but found that their medium level is just the right amount if not a little too spicy for me. They even have a "Angry Hot" level of spice that you need to sign a waiver for. They offer chicken sandos (sandwiches), nuggets, strips, and other parts of the chicken along with waffles and waffle fries. For a more calorie friendly option, they also have a salad with chicken. Located in the strip mall with the Panera, Party City, etc there is a lot full of parking. There are a few tables inside as well a few shaded tables just outside. It's a fairly small shop overall. They have a regular cashier but also two table kiosks to take orders. My order of a small chicken sando, waffle fries, and Korean style chicken with rice and pickles was ready in about ten mins on a weekday dinner hour. Dropping a star for how expensive these are. We've always liked Hangry joes, getting the medium and spicy levels. The hotter levels are definitely spicy but have a very tasty kick. I still prefer medium so I can taste the flavors more instead of just heat. We got tenders with waffle fries, which both were crunchy and well cooked. I liked the dry rub and dipping it into the sauces. They were nice enough to give us extra sauces too. The celery and cucumbers had a good crunch too. I loved the loaded mac & cheese but it was a lot for me. It had chicken, the medium sauce, and jalapenos in it. It's my comfort food and to have the extras on it made it even better. The place is inviting and it's sort of small inside but there are also a few tables outside too. There's plenty of parking in that strip center. Has plenty of natural light. Service was decent except oddly slow when it came to the drinks, but I think they forgot so we ended up requesting them at the counter. This place has some of the best fried chicken I've ever had! I got the hot chicken sando, and I almost didn't finish it in one sitting because of how spicy it was. The spice builds up with each bite! Still enjoyable to eat, I just had to eat lots of pickles and coleslaw to help with the heat. I'm definitely getting medium or mild next time! So everything was delicious but I need to warn you that the spicy level "hot" is no joke, painfully hot. The hangry level requires a waiver, I didn't try that. Hangry Joes does NOT disappoint!!! This is what Fairfax didn't know they needed!!! The chicken here is soooo crispy and juicy and flavorful. I've never been a huge fried chicken eater, but I can't stop coming back for more. I am so obsessed with this place. Not only is their food TO DIE FOR, but their staff is SO FRIENDLY and accommodating!!! Jennifer especially always treats me like royalty whenever I come in, it is so sweet. Despite being their first customer (subtle flex), they treat all other customers like royalty as well and it's great to see. I have recommended Hangry Joe's to everyone I know since it opened a few weeks ago, and have received so much positive feedback from those who went and tried for themselves. I would give Hangry Joes allllllll the stars if I could, but I suppose 5 will suffice. 2/12/23 Upon seeing a sign from my car of Waffle Fries, I was drawn into Hangry Joe's. Upon entering inside the store of Hangry Joe's I saw something I haven't had for a long time. I wanted to try Fried Orkra; as well, as The Waffle Fries. I saw there were a number of other chicken options I would like to try, but I will hold off on this until next week or the following. I will say the Korean Chicken caught my eye; as well, as the Macaroni and Cheese. These will have to be without any kind of spice to it. I dislike spicy food, but my wife loves it. The restaurant apparently started out from Nashville Tennessee, but has now opened its doors in Maryland and Virginia from what I have seen. I have checked to see where else they have opened up, but am sure there a lit of other places. I look forward to trying more of their foods very soon. read more

Delicious chicken spot! Went here with a friend one evening and decided to try this place out since it was close by. The food was great and the staff were friendly. The food: I ordered the chicken tenders with a mild spice level, and some fried okra in place of the waffle fries it usually comes with. I got their combo #2 and it was well worth it. The tenders were cooked perfectly and they were flaky and flavorful. The okra was great too! Everything had that nice fried crisp. The service: the staff were friendly when we were taking our orders and the place was clean and sanitary. This is a chain. Do not get this place confused with Nashville style Hot Chicken. There was not anything truly authentic about the hot chicken. It was basically fried chicken tenders with a type of hot sauce. The waffles were a nice touch that came with butter and syrup. I also had the waffle fries that were ok. The chicken sandwich is probably one of the most competitive food items in terms of what restaurants people compare. Woo boi, Hot Lola, are two other popular chicken sandwich shops in NoVa. The reason why I like Hangry Joe's more is that they have a more complete flavor profile. They also compliment their spicy chicken with an awesome coleslaw. Let me first say this...being raised in Nashville for 20years I will say that this is NOT the type of hot chicken that is the staple in Nashville. And just to add the spicy chicken to it with the side of maple syrup just takes it to a whole new level. This spot is probably my favorite chicken sandwich spot in Virginia. Friendly staff and very clean place. Everything was well seasoned!
