Well, it's official, I'm old & old school. Went to Hank's this weekend and couldn't have been more frustrated. Let me set the stage ... upon entering for the first time, never been before, it's very confusing and no signage as to how the flow should go. There are menus in a magazine type holder on the wall and you can see an "order here" window. However, we had no idea if we grab a table then order, if someone should seat us & then order. It was all too confusing for us as was the menu. We finally decided to just grab a table & figure it out. We decided what we wanted and then realized if we left our table to order at the window, we'd lose the table because it was packed. A lovely patron at the next table saw our confusion and told us we need to order at the window, as a server will not take our order. We said we did not want to lose our table if we left to get in line to order. She told us she'd hold it for us. Very nice of her. We finally place our order & ask for coffee. It comes in a relatively small mug and get this .... you must get back in line if you want a 2nd cup of coffee. Mind you, it's a long lone. Unacceptable. Again, no signs how things flow. We wanted water and there's a shelf on the side wall with water glasses and water, apparently it's self serve but no indication or signage so we had to sit & watch what people did to figure it all out. You also have to find & retrieve your own set ups. We did enjoy sitting outside on a nice day but the frustration kind of ruined the experience. The food was good, we both got bfast sandwiches. I will not be back but give it a go. We are just set in our ways and enjoy not standing in line at a nice place and then have to get back in line for coffee, while your breakfast sandwich gets cold because the line is so long. read more

Wonderful breakfast spot close proximity to Higgins Beach! We stopped by this morning after taking the dog to the beach. The staff were quite friendly and helpful for two newbies. Limited menu items but the items on the menu were ALL amazingly good - so very much worth the stop!! We ended up getting the breakfast sandwich and I added sausage (which was crispy but not dry - perfect for the sandwich), a breakfast burrito, and a cinnamon roll with a whipped cream cheese frosting. (See photos) One thing I noticed was a lot of options for prepared meals! With the amount of vacation rentals in the area, this would be a perfect spot to grab go for dinner with the family while visiting! read more

When I walked in, it immediately reminded me of Bar Harbor -- the kind of whimsical vibe you get from the inns and breakfast spots there. The location is great, tucked away and surrounded by nature. But it's not just a breakfast and lunch spot; inside, they sell Maine-made goods, including spices, kitchen towels, and other little things made locally. They also have a fridge with grab-and-go options. You order at the counter, get a number, and they bring the food to your table. Breakfast ends at 11am, then it switches to lunch with sandwiches, wraps, and baked goods. The sandwiches are delicious, but they're on the pricier side at $14-$17, and the portions aren't huge. That said, I feel like you're paying for the vibe and location too, and at least the sandwiches come with tater tots (or a salad)! Coffee was really good, and they offer discounted refills. I also loved that they use local ingredients when possible, like in their the sourdough, which comes from Bread & Friends bakery in Portland. I had the turkey + arugula + fig jam sandwich and it was good, but they could really tone down the amount of arugula. Two other things I appreciated: the indoor dining area is super spacious, and there's plenty of parking. Will I be back? Definitely, but I don't think I'll be a regular given the prices. read more

Great place for breakfast or lunch when staying in or around the Scarborough area. Great indoor outdoor seating situation with a big yard and games. Nice grab and go freezer section with some pantry items as well. For lunch, I ordered the kale salad with added goat cheese and my friend ordered the Turkey and Fig Jam as a wrap. The wrap was pretty light on the meat but otherwise good. Salad was also light on the quinoa and would add a protein if I were to order it again. Don't skip the chocolate chip cookie! read more

I stopped by at Hank's for lunch very recently. Their current hours of operation are very limited, open for lunch Wed-Sun. They offer sandwiches with one side, salads, soups, New England clam chowder, homemade desserts, and a selection of heat and serve entrees in the cooler. The prices here are moderate. They offer dine-in, takeout, and online ordering. They have a cozy indoor dining room and an outside deck in the back. I placed my order and paid at the counter first and decided to dine-in and took a seat outside at a small table. They gave me a number rod to place on my table and brought out a glass bottle of cold water and glass.. There were already several customers here, all eating outside. My lunch entree arrived 5 minutes later. The Meatball Sandwich ($14) had pork and beef meatballs, chunky marinara sauce, melted Vermont sharp white cheddar, kale and arugula pesto spread on lightly toasted Italian Bread, served with a side (chilled pesto pasta salad). I also got an extra side (chilled curried couscous) for $3. The portion was modest and the food was pretty good. The meatball sandwich had good flavors, served warm. The service here was prompt. After I finished my lunch, I browsed the cooler of heat & serve entrees which I saw carrot soup, lasagnas, chicken masala, Mac & cheese and others, most entrees $18-$36. read more

I have been to Hank's a few times, and I am a huge fan of their Caeser Salad with Chicken. The romaine is crisp, the chicken is delicious, and perfectly prepared, and the dressing is perfect. But it is the wonderful breadcrumbs that put it over the top!!! If you can't dine in, (and you should, because it's cute and bright and the staff is warm and efficient), then get a salad for dinner and take it to the beach! I went to Hanks last summer and I bought 1 thing from the freezer. Someone there decided to tip themselves $20 on my slip and maybe thought I wouldn't notice? Thankfully the manager refunded me when I emailed him, but had I not noticed they would've gotten away with straight up stealing money from me. Be careful with this place! read more

What a cute spot!! Outside patio dining or indoors. Lots of space. Curated collection of staples and locally made products available as well as the menu food to take-a-way in the event you're just passing through on the way to beach. Lovely people. They raise their own pigs a mile away. Bakery assortment was from 2 Fat Cats (not my favorite) and Mainely Grains English muffins and rolls! (Delicious). The breakfast burrito with eggs, Vermont cheddar, sour cream, tater tots, salsa verde, hot sauce & onions with peppers in a flour tortilla was out of this world delicious. Grilled on the outside just a bit. Yum!! Classic breakfast sandwich was tasty. Natalie's OJ and mimosa was on-point. Worth a trip. We will definitely be back for lunch. read more

We live in Scarborough and have been to Hanks a few times now. This casual spot was another restaurant a few years back and has been nicely renovated and renamed. There is some space indoors with tables, but on this warmer fall day eating with family visiting for lunch we opted to sit outside where they have a deck with tables in the back overlooking fields and trees (some with umbrellas). Ordering was easy at the counter with friendly staff and they brought our food and drinks out quickly to our table. I had the Cubano sandwich, which came on great bread and was super flavorful. My side choice of potato salad was good flavor wise, but a bit undercooked. My wife had a vegetarian soup with a curried cauliflower side which she said was great. Also ordered tater tots for the table which came with a nice aioli to dip which were SO GOOD and washed it all down with a local IPA on tap. For my our portion of the tab it was over $45 for lunch with 1 drink each, so it's not a place I could do lunch all the time, but we love this place and will be back I'm sure! read more

Out lunch was fabulous! I had the roasted squash salad and added chicken. Everything was fresh and seasoned perfectly. I loved the tangy goat cheese with the sweet dried cranberries, crunchu croutons and very fresh greens. The service was great!! 3 of our party ordered clam chowder. None of us finished it because frankly it was TERRIBLE!!! Clam chowder filled with smoky meat??? REALLY??? The smoky meat was all we could taste. I never thought I would find a clam chowder worse than Manhattan Clam Chowder, at least in Maine. But it's here, at Hanks!!! Had lunch today at Hank's for the first time. Wonderful experience. All the staff (I think most are family-related) were extremely welcoming and helpful. The food was delicious; much better than the simple menu might indicate. One of us had a meatball sandwich and some butternut squash soup; the other had grilled cheese with bacon and tomato. All of the dishes were very flavorful without being overpowering. The squash soup was fantastic: not too thick, and highlighting the natural flavor of the squash. We chose sides of red cabbage coleslaw and, again, the flavor of the cabbage came through delightfully without burying it under heavy sauce. We met Hank himself, who was modest and charming. We understand he went to Ireland's Ballymaloe Cookery School. It certainly paid off! All around fine place. We will be back! read more

Not only is the staff unbelievably welcoming and kind, they are on top of their game when it comes to taking orders, delivering food, and making you feel right at home at Hank's! You get what you pay for - all of the food is the freshest you'll find and is just delicious. Once you enjoy the most scrumptious breakfast or lunch, you HAVE to indulge in the house-made treats! A variety of delicious cookies (an essential is the chocolate chip with flakey sea salt), pies, and other sweets are the perfect way to cap off your time at Hank's. Stopped by Hank's for breakfast this morning and ordered the Classic Breakfast Sandwich, which should have come with a fried egg on an English muffin, with Vermont sharp white cheddar. I had only glanced at the menu briefly and when I was delivered an English muffin with a fried egg on it and that's it, I thought it was not only plain, but downright bad. I now see that it should have had cheddar cheese on it, which would have helped. Coffee tasted like it had been sitting on the burner a bit too long -- bitter.
