We arrived in Maine on Saturday and made reservations at the Chart Room for Sunday, Unfortunately, the only time available was 8:45 pm. We were fine with that as it was the birthday of a member of our group. The problem with that was we really felt rushed from the moment we walked in the door. I'm sure staff was ready to go home for the night but if reservations are that late, they should be prepared to allow people to eat without feeling rushed. As annoying as that can be, my BIG problem follows: we were thrilled to be able to bring our little dog and to see they had a dog menu. We ordered the chicken from the dog menu for her. I was hand feeding her pieces (thankfully didn't just let her eat it on her own, as she probably would have eaten all of it!). When she had eaten almost half of it, I tasted a little piece and was super surprised to taste the spices added. I would have thought that it would be pretty bland. We asked the waitress what was added and she accommodated us by bringing the can of spices the cooks had used. It included salt, onion and garlic... all things that can be toxic to dogs. I spent the next few days worried about whether our little girl would have a reaction which really put a damper on our vacation. The waitress tried to make things right but shame on the cooks!! If you're going to have a dog menu, you should know what's safe to feed them. read more

The sunset was beautiful off the deck the evening we had dinner at The Chart Room. The staff was more than pleasant while everyone around us were having a wonderful time. The food was delicious, although I do love food. We started with the BDI house salad, then I ordered Brussel Sprouts. They both were prepared perfectly and easy to eat. They have a good wine list if you like reds with some pleasant surprises! Our server was funny, sharp and attentive. Clean your windows people, especially in the summer! Such a lovely outdoor area only to be ruined with windows full of webs and dead bugs along the bottom and corners. Yes it was summer, but clearly these hadn't been cleaned in awhile. For their overpriced food they certainly could do a quick wipe along the bottom edges. Best thing about the place is the view of the ocean & clam flats. My steak frites was good, but for $42 it would be nice to have a baked potato instead of frozen fries, and a steamed vegetable instead of arugula. The Japanese bread and paprika butter was yummy. My wife and I decided to give this place a try as we are local and came to celebrated my birthday over lunch. The watermelon gazpacho was tasty but lacked presentation. Heck, a couple of mint leaves would have been a nice touch. The chef didn't think of this? My wife ordered the Risotto for her main dish and the portion was tiny, and for $27 how much does a couple of tablespoons of Arborio rice cost? My burger was tasty but the fries were boring and tasted like they came from Sysco. We complained to our server who was supposed to tell his manager. Made a reservation for our anniversary, and made sure it was noted on the reservation. We got there early. Had a pleasant drink at the bar. When we were being seated, we were placed at a small table across from each other at the entry to the inside "porch" dining area that was being used along with outside seating. Not exactly the anniversary seating we had hoped for and had showed up 30 minutes early in order to secure. We were told it would be over 30 minutes for a seat outside (again, we arrived 30 minutes early) or we could sit in the interior more formal dining room where no one else was sitting. We explained about it being our anniversary and having arrived 30 minutes early and all they would say is, sorry, that is all we have. Food has always been just "ok" there. It is the location and view (from some seats, particularly the outside), that is the draw. My family and I had been wanting to try this restaurant for a while, but getting a reservation was always tough. We're a group of ten and usually visit during peak season, so tables fill up fast. We finally managed to book a Saturday evening in July. When we reserved, we let the staff know that several of us had food allergies, mainly gluten, and would need accommodations. We're used to waiting a bit longer in situations like this--cross-contamination precautions can take time, and we get that. We arrived at the Chart Room around 5:30 PM, a little late due to heavy traffic (our reservation was originally for 5). Thankfully, the staff handled the delay without issue and seated us in a separate room, which seemed to be used for functions. Only two of us ordered drinks beyond water, and we placed our food orders soon after. We reminded our server about the allergies, and to her credit, she checked with the kitchen and made sure everything could be safely prepared. Three of us ordered appetizers--soups and salads--but only one salad arrived, and it came out well after the soups. From there, we expected the entrées to follow shortly. They didn't. We placed our orders around 6 PM and didn't get our meals until about 7:30. Again, we understand allergy-friendly meals can take longer, but this was a delay we've never experienced elsewhere, even with similar dietary restrictions. The food itself was okay--nothing bad, but nothing memorable either. It seemed like the kitchen waited to bring everything out at once, which might explain the long delay, but even so, an hour and a half is excessive. Overall, the meal was just average. What stung more was the feeling that, because we arrived 30 minutes late (due to a water main break--completely out of our control), we were bumped down the priority list. Remembering the wonderful views, food, and service we enjoyed one year ago in July 22, we booked the Chart Room in the Blackpoint Inn for a dinner this August, asking that our group of 8 sit on the veranda. The agent said that 8 could not sit outside usually but if we came at 5pm, they would try. We arrived on time and were told that 8 could only sit outside for "special occasions"....not sure why my out of town visiting loved ones were not special enough. We settled for a long booth with wobbly tables next to the restrooms, thinking the food and service would make up for our disappointment. Sorry to say the food was just ok...and..2 dinners were delivered ice cold. One was reheated, one redone, but was returned long after others finished. We had to ask for bread and water refills. At no point did the manager approach or apologize. What a shame. We will not return. read more

Came here with my family for a birthday. They called us before we came to confirm our reservation and to make sure we knew to wear a mask before we were seated/ walking to our table. The service was overall slow but attentive and friendly. Our server was excellent. We sat outside and our table was in the blistering sun. It was a 90° evening and they did not have any umbrellas to offer (if you are eating outside go in the late eveningThe food was delicious. We tried all of the appetizers and they were all delicious. We've been going to the Chart room whenever we're is the Scarborough area for the past several years. At the end of the '23 season they announced that their chef would be leaving. I'm not sure what management decisions were made after that, but the menu and food quality have gone way down hill. Rolls seem packaged, no salmon offered to add to salads, lobster roll seems frozen and overly minced. I'm hoping the restaurant management gets it together. The location is so special but the food quality makes it hard to go back. read more

Not the first time we have been to The Chart Room, but this was really special. We arrived mid-day when there were only a few clients at the restaurant. There was fog over the bay and from our outdoor table, we could see the fog lifting. Our waiter clearly cared about us and was available whenever we needed him. Then we ordered our reasonably-priced lunch--grilled shrimp salad. It was a memorable visit to this beautiful area because of the excellent food and the pleasant environment. The view!!! We had an early dinner tonight on the porch overlooking the water. I LOVE eating here because of the view. Our food was very very good. He had the fried chicken with bacon sandwich. I had the grilled steak salad. We both were pleased. I would have liked more lettuce and he wanted more bacon (he had a small piece on one end of his sandwich) but otherwise, great! Well I've waited to review the Inns restaurant to give the kitchen a chance to improve this season. I've been three times and it's only gotten worse. What happened Black Point Inn? I made a reservation for four, we had out of state visitors and the view is beautiful at the inn. The foods always been good in past years. Even though I had asked not to be put at a high top table, sure enough that's where we were seated. The table is small and wobbly. We ordered calamari for the table. It was undercooked and very bland. The cocktails were perfect so kudos to the bar. All the entrees had something wrong with them. 3 of the four were cold and the scallop dish had 3 (yes 3) medium size scallops on the plate. Oh and it was $32... Our waiter never came back so my husband asked another server to find him. Waited some more finally he got up and found the waiter. We didn't want to complain about everything so he just asked them to fix the temperature issues on our guests food. Ten minutes later he comes back with a plate of microwaved potatoes... we ordered the shrimp scampi (bland, precooked shrimp on top of pasta in a watery sauce) salmon special(cold sides) scallops ( room temp, not enough food for the price, cold purée) and the steak and frites (the fries were the best part but were cold). The waiter forgot to bring us bread. Not once did anyone ask us how our food was. Go for a cocktail and enjoy their beautiful view just don't have the food. read more

This restaurant is absolutely amazing. After several weeks emailing back and forth I was able to set up a unique vegetarian tasting menu for my girlfriends birthday. The willingness of the chefs to do this made her feel so special. The food was amazing and so creative. Chef Adam in collaboration with chef Wes came up with 5 amazing plates. The food was delicious and unbelievably tasty. Chef Adam even came out to chat with us at the end of our meal to see what we thought. Our sever Rachel provided great service and found everything so exciting. She was very knowledgeable and explained every dish to a tee. I've been here a few times. It's set in a lovely hotel near the ocean. Pretty busy place being a hotel restaurant. Small simple menu but everything is done well. The price does say we are upper scale restaurant. They have a good size bar and are willing most anything you ask for and do a good job doing so. The view is nice and the atmosphere is relaxing. If your ordering food however you are forced into a common wicker chair section. It can be nice However if you are a social butterfly. Yes, it is expensive, but you're paying for the location and the (incredible) view, and they take great care with the food, which is creative and thoughtful, but not the best ever or anything. Not a great experience. We were so hopeful as we walked in the hotel and were greeted by several different staff members, welcoming us! Walked to the restaurant, where they almost seemed confused about us even having a reservation (not that we even needed one considering over half of the restaurant was empty). We had made the reservation on Open Table, and my husband called earlier in the day and requested a window table since it was my birthday and he wanted it to be special. They did not accommodate the window request- they told us we would have to wait an hour for a window table....after we had made a reservation for a window table. We were sat at a table and a server came over before we could even look at the drink menu, so we asked for a minute while we decided what we want. It was then 15 minutes until they came back for our drink order. We took the opportunity of having the server there to order our meals too. Drinks took another 15 minutes to arrive despite the restaurant and bar being mostly empty. The mussels appetizer was good- credit where credit is due. My husband had the steak which was OK, but nothing special; served with asparagus and bland mashed potatoes. I ordered the seafood fra diavolo (the seafood special for the night)- the moment it was served I was hit with a wave of fish stink. Before my first bite I could tell it was bad. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and tried it, and also had my husband try it...it honestly tasted like one of the seafood items in it had gone bad. It was inedible. The server offered to replace it with something else, but by the time anything would come out (service was incredibly slow despite a full staff and nearly empty restaurant), my husband would have been fully done with his meal, so I declined and shared the dry steak with my husband. As a "courtesy" they removed my entree and offered a free dessert. Now, nothing in life is guaranteed beyond death and taxes, but absolutely an inedible dish should be, and free dessert on your birthday is pretty commonplace. So, I guess thank you for offering a free dessert for serving me past-due seafood, but you should be doing that anyway on a guest's birthday. We would have ordered the creme brulee, but some genius decided to take a perfect dessert and turn it vegan. Cashew creme brulee? No thanks. We ordered the blueberry pie. We had called ahead the day before, requested a table outside, was told we had a reservation, and then when we arrived were told that hotel guests wanted a table so we were no longer going to be seated. She could have called us before we traveled there or apologized when we arrived, but instead she offered to seat all six of us at a high-top meant for two.
