**November 2025: Friday Night Visit** I needed to pick up some quart size sandwich bags, and this super market had that and so much more. I'm amazed by how huge this store was and the variety of everything you could ever need and more. I also liked that there are different sections that have Maine Made items and that there are little signs that say "local" if you wanted to pick up some regional items. I really wanted to pick up some fresh Maine milk, and Maple BBQ sauce, but unfortunately since I was at the tail end of my roadtrip I couldn't take much expect for a small bag of salt and vinegar potato chips and my sandwich bags; however, if I come back to Portland, I'll know where I can buy some regional goodies! read more

This is the largest Hannaford in my area, and has some unique products that I can't get at the smaller stores in Cumberland County. There are plenty of pre-made options if you're looking for food on the go (although the chicken wings at $9.99 a pound are a total rip off), a dedicated local product section (please expand!), and some interesting international offerings (chive dumplings!). My only complaint is that it is weirdly organized - like the pasta sauce and pasta section at the end of the wine aisle (wine and pasta do go together, but in a grocery store?). I would love to see this location expand the local and international offerings, and maybe have some kind of newsletter? It feels like a community hub, and I know they do a lot to help the immigrant community but it wasn't very apparent to me as a customer. read more

This is a nice supermarket. It is clean and well stocked. We found everything we needed.

Absolutely terrible. I did a self-checkout and the machine told me I needed someone to do an age verification. Well, there was no one around. I cheerfully went up to the customer service desk and was met by a surly woman (I think?) with zero charisma, a huge frown, and a grimace, who told me she could not leave her stand at all. I told her not to worry and that I just would like her to call someone to come help me as I couldn't check out. (Do I have to do her job for her? Apparently). She grumbled and growled and finally called an equally surly attendant to help me out. Except he didn't. He walked me back to the self-checkout and, lo and behold, there was someone who worked there now. He scowled at me and asked me why I said there was no one there. Well, there wasn't someone there 2 minutes ago. I thanked them all for helping me (which one of them finally did, albeit begrudgingly). The attendant never responded except for a grumble and a huff. They all get a zero out of 10 for helpfulness, cheerfulness and friendliness. Get your act together, Hannafords. These people do not belong in customer-facing roles. And they clearly cannot do the basics of what their job entails. read more

I had the misfortune of going to the Hannaford Grocery Store on Forest Avenue in Portland, Maine yesterday afternoon. I was there to pick up food supplies for the coming week. While in the store, a young couple passed by me. The male member of the duo had a mask that was down around his neck. He was coughing and sneezing constantly. You could not get away from his rapid footsteps that carried him through the store. A Hannaford employee was nearby me and I pointed out this situation to her. She said there was no way to enforce the state mandate...a mandate that was clearly marked with many signs at every entrance. I asked her why not call security and at least escort this "me first" person around the store? She failed to take my suggestion. I decided it was better to stop my shopping and check out. What if he were lighting up a cigarette while in the store? Would the store personnel have intervened? My guess is that there would have been a security person there quickly if this shopper was smoking a cigarette in the store. When one goes to a Lowe's store and a forklift is in use, there are barriers put up to keep people away from the dangerous equipment. OSHA requires this. Why then doesn't OSHA enforce the state facial covering mandate that is there to protect the health and safety of shoppers? In my humble opinion, it seemed to me that the health and safety of shoppers was not a priority yesterday at the Hannaford Grocery Store on Forest Avenue in Portland, Maine. read more

Bought Angus Beef there and other Brand Goods and they are always good. WARNING DO NOT BUY HANNAFORD GENERIC. I had gross mold in their Hot Dog Buns on the expiration date and Half & Half curdled 2 weeks before expiration date!!!!! Workers there are always great, but apparently management doesn't give a hoot about customers. Bought $150+ in groceries then went to Customer Service to warn them about these problems. Waited 10 minute and no Supervisor ever showed. Left and will never go back! read more

This is Hannaford's is the most convenient grocery store in Portland area. It is right off of I-295. It is also The Hub of Maine's cultural diversity. Yep that is right, this grocery has one of everything and everyone! I Love It! The staff is friendly and helpful. I am not sure the history of this Hannaford, meaning I am not sure if it was once a Shop & Save or if it is newer, but it definitely feel like it is an other building that has been modified or expanded. The only reason I say that is that there are some parts that feel tired and worn but my review is primarily regarding the lunch items that they have available. I would say that this one of the most interesting in terms of lunch selection. First, there produce section is very well laid out, usually full and very appealing. They have a wide variety of items from the basic like lettuce, tomatoes and potatoes to the more extensive like celeriac and burdock root. They also have a wall of fresh juices and bread as well as the usual bakery items. Starting in the left corner past produce, they have a sushi bar that always has a wide selection of sushi items. My favorite is the Sushi Bowl (So good!). I am not sure, but they may even make you sushi to order but there is usual enough that it shouldn't be an issue. Next to that is a sandwich/pizza shop area with a menu of items to order. Next is a stir fry bar where you fill a container with your fresh ingredients and they fry it up with any meats, sauces or extras that you desire. I usually get noodles with fresh veggies and peanut sauce. So good! Just in front of those areas is a chicken wing bar, fried chicken stand, and a "bento box" station. I always stock up with a couple for my lunches during a week because they are reasonably priced at $1.99-3.99 each. I like the fruit tray as well as the one with chicken salad. The best part is there is a register in the area where they sell hot coffee/tea as well as single pastries. There is rarely anyone else cashing out at the register, so I never have to wait. A quick in and out, which is convenient for my lunch breaks. read more

Enormous supermarket -- being from NYC, space is always at a premium -- looks clean and well stocked, etc. This review is for one thing in particular, though, that I noticed today and thought was quite clever. Next to the beer in the refrigerated case at the front of the store is a rack of single bottles, mostly ~12 oz. At the top there was a sign that said Mix n Match for $9.99. I like to try new brews and I love getting variety packs, so this is perfect for me, and the price is a fair deal. Take a cardboard foldy 6 pack case from the thing on the side and fill with your choice beers. There are some larger bottles towards the bottom of the rack that we figured were not included in the offer since they would not fit in the regular sized container, but the signage is unclear. That and the fact that there were only a couple cardboard foldy things left there are the only negatives. I hope other groceries and supermarkets will pick up this idea, it's a good one! read more

They've been the crappiest Pharmacy especially these past 3 years. I called upset & sick after waiting since 12/27/22. (Its now 1/14/23) for my refills made easy lie again. The young male Pharmacist was continuously laughing at me on the phone for cutting him off as I was upset & all stuffed up trying to breathe & explain. They store manager(Matt) & Pharmacy manager (Cassidy)covered his butt saying he didn't etc liars. Also found out it's not even Hannaford's pharmacy on 50 Cottage Rd South Portland. They are not Hannaford they are outsourced by some other company. Never lose your professionalism as pharmacist. Laughing at customers who are sick? This is one of, if not the worst grocery sto's I have ever been to. Feels dirty for some reason. It feels really closed in. The layout is very poorly arranged, its down-right confusing. The Staff here, especially the one's at check-out seem really depressed and unhappy - low morale fo sho... I am forced to go here on occasion due to being a resident in Portland and I simply have to go here because TJ's and WF's doesn't have what I need. But I LOATHE going here. I like this place, they do a good job for the most part but I am a little bummed out that they stopped carrying paneer in the cheese area by the deli. But they also play the best music of any grocery store ever so it is the best place to shop. Keep up the great work y'all. read more

I am one of the world's most impatient, easily stressed people. So, I tend to despise grocery shopping more than most things in this world. However, this Hannaford always exceeds my expectations. 1. Freshest and most plentiful selection of veggies, probably in the state of Maine. They fly through products so quickly, all the fruits, vegetables, and various produce items are superbly fresh. 2. Friendliest deli staff I've ever experienced. The people behind the deli counter are always upbeat and pleased to help customers, whether it's super busy at noontime, or it's dead at ten PM. They're really top notch. 3. The CHEESE SELECTION. They have a whole section of the store for specialty cheese. I can appreciate this. 4. The employees are generally very friendly and happy to assist customers. 5. Local products. I love that local farms are represented here. You can find almost anything you want from the state of Maine here. 6. The clynk accessibility - there's a whole separate part of the parking lot for Clynk. That makes it super easy to return bottles and to make it part of the shopping trip. 7. Cleanliness - it's always very clean here. It's HUGE, so it's pretty amazing that the store is kept so impeccably clean. 8. Veg options - they carry several vegetarian and vegan brands, both local and national, and the frozen section is plentiful. 9. The prices. You cannot beat the prices of this Hannaford. I shouldn't hate on Shaw's so publicly, but Shaw's is often priced three to four times higher than this Hannaford. 10. The layout. It's easy to find everything! Ok, that is all. I was wearing a mask because I work in Healthcare because I want to protect everyone else. I only go to the store when I desperately have to. There is no need to be rude to us! I checked out on Monday at Forest Avenue. Disappointed when the cashier told me that the rewards app wasn't available "it's down". So I didn't get points for my purchases, and I didn't get to use my points. Very disappointing. Then got home only to find the fresh peaches were all rotten, along with two nectarines. Fresh produce? First of all... THE STIR FRY section of the "salad bar"... OMG soooo good. Teriyaki, Sweet & Sour, Scheuan, etc.. Delish!! Double the protein for 2$ and easily have two meals. The salad bar WHOA!!!! Magnificent! And the warm food- last night slow cooked pot roast- rotisserie chicken, butternut squash and apple soup.. And tons more prepared food... And hands down and quite easily I might the add the BEST place to shop for choices or options.. A full range of gluten free and organics. Spectacular service. This is a pretty typical grocery chain store with a convenient location. First, I love the raised style of the entrance (do grocery stores have foyers?). Walking in past the random bins of sale items you'll immediately find yourself in the produce section filled with fake trees and produce 'carts' - which I believe they've styled and configured to make you feel like you're in some random fruit and vegetable market in South America. Or maybe I'm trying too hard to imagine that I'm not in a climate where it's unimaginably cold for four months a year. Second, for a chain, not a bad beer section, guys. Kudos for the opportunity to mix n match six packs of beer. Third, this is 2015: WHERE ARE THE SELF-CHECKOUT REGISTERS! I know that it typically takes twice as long to go through self-checkout than it does to interact with a human clerk, but on some days you just don't want to interact with humans. And those days usually involve no shower and sweat pants. Don't judge me. Sometimes you just want to get in and out with your double stuff Oreos. Fourth, why don't your circulars have coupons? I really enjoyed my Stop and Shop days in Boston when I would get ridiculous '$5 off of $50' coupons in their circulars and in the mail AND earn gas points at Shell stations simply by making grocery purchases. I appreciate that you have daily low prices but you're doing nothing to reward the savvy shoppers like myself who like to sit in a dimly-lit room and cackle while cutting out coupons from stacks of circulars. This place was busy BEFORE Trader Joes and Whole Foods came to town and it continues to be busy after, which is strange for a city that hasn't really grown that much in population over the last 5 or 10 years. Shopping Hannaford's is the best first impression for anyone hoping to "get" Maine's coastal, summer lifestyle. The store busies itself daily with servicing people who plan to travel to any one of the 4,613 islands charted by State of Maine's Coastal Program. I was distracted in the produce section by cartons of little, local blueberries while my friend asked for a few bananna boxes at checkout. Bananna boxes, with their stiff cardboard sides and partly open, removable tops, are perfect for packing food destined for a boat or ferry. I wonder what Delmonico thinks of this underground trafficking in bananna boxes? The boxes are no sooner off the container ship with banannas ready for sale at Hannaford, before they are re-packed for free with a week's private stash of food for some out island off the coast of Maine. Ayyy Matey. Ask for a bananna box in any other State, and I guarantee they will get all fish-eyed with you. read more

Great location. After a run through Back Bay, I like to explore the aisles for snacks or what my dinner will be that night. Crossing the street from the park makes it convenient! Free samples. You can locate the sushi samples in the sushi section near the stir fry grill area. I just had pieces of some pretty good Americanized sushi. Don't expect it to be authentic Japanese cuisine. But still pretty good! Cooked meals. They have hot cooked chicken wings and whole roasted chickens available. However, if you're on a budget, they have cold chicken wings set off to the side for a much cheaper price. I haven't tried any of them yet but I may in the future for convenience. Produce. The produce is fresh as compared to Shaw's on Congress street. The prices may be similar but I would double check. I feel that this Hannaford's provides more selection as well. Milk. They carry every brand that you can find at Wal-Mart and Shaw's but they also carry Smiling Farm milk with flavors ranging from blueberry, banana, strawberry, etc. Cheese. They have a huge section dedicated to cheese. However, their regluar cheese sticks and cheese slices are located in another section of the store which isn't very convenient. I lived in Portland for 20yrs. When Shop & Save became Hannaford, I wondered if it'd be reliable, but this place blew me away. They renovated and made the space bigger and better. It was the only store I really wanted to shop at. I'd go to Shaw's Millcreek when I visited my folks in SoPo though. I can understand why it's busy, (after all, it is located in the busiest part of Portland). But if you do go here, just expect that it is always going to be busy here. Always. This Hannaford is the king of Hannafords. Everything in this Hannaford is spaced out due to the large space of the grocery store. It allows for easy access into the aisles and the staff is always friendly and helpful. The produce is always fresh and well-kept and everything is kept organized. One thing I noticed is that the prices are slightly inflated due to being in Portland when compared to other Hannafords, however, it's still a great grocery store that prides itself on cleanliness and organization. read more

A nice chain supermarket that has most things I'm looking for. It's clean, organized well, and has friendly staff. I really like the fact that you can buy things in bulk so I can enjoy a little granola in the morning and not worry about it becoming stale by buying what I plan to eat. The place can be a bit pricey if you aren't looking for the deals, but I usually take a look through their weekly ad before I make my decisions. I do enjoy having a big store that is in a convenient location and carries mostly everything I want. I live closer to the Hannaford on Riverside, but if I'm looking for something in particular, I usually have to come in town for the better selection. HOWEVER, there is a reason I always called this place " the Circus". It's completely nuts there all the time. I've never been there when it hasn't been completely crowded and chock full of total insanity. The parking lot is always a challenge (that's putting it nicely). Parts of the store are laid out well (mostly the produce section) while others just don't make any sense. I have a hard time remembering where certain things are and once they did the re-design and moved aisles around, it became even worse. I try to keep my cool when I'm here but sometimes its downright impossible. The employees don't seem to be very friendly and some of them even seem to hate their lives. As much as I would like to avoid this place, sometimes I just can't. read more

Good selection of goods, including Maine products (like Maine beer/Mead) and even a small selection of "ethnic" foods (Mexican, Asian). This Hannaford's is located in a convenient location near USM. Despite being busy often, the store feels clean and stocked. The dates on products always seem to be out far enough to justify purchase. I am able to find many products made in the Maine/VT area for a reasonable price. The staff are usually friendly. One employee even took the time to find me elsewhere in the store, after I had asked him a question about a produce product! I have found products here cheaper that also sell at higher prices in Whole Foods. read more

Hannaford's is clean and well organized. They offer fair pricing and this particular location has lots of parking. It gets super crowded during peak hours and the lines can move at a snail's pace. Avoid it during these times if you don't like crowds. I come here because they offer great weekly specials and they have a decent selection of local goods/produce. It's a good place for the essentials, but I will visit TJ's or Whole Foods for fancy cheeses and cured meats. My favorite item at Hannaford's is the Cabot yogurt! read more

Nothing frustrates me more than grocery shopping here. I will admit, I am a grocery store 'snob' having grown up with the luxury of Wegmans, I know nothing compares, but gah Hannaford really ruffles my feathers. For one, why is there ALWAYS only a handful on cashiers open and then lines are at least 6 people deep. Second, my bags are always packed so haphazardly and things just thrown in. If you go in the evening, don't expect to find anything in stock. The only reason I continue to shop here is the convenience factor to where I work and live. read more
