Went to Happy Donuts and bought donuts for the second time. The donuts taste good, I especially liked the purple sweet potato one. I had an issue with unclear pricing. First time around, I didn't know how the pricing worked so it was expected that the price would be more expensive than I had originally thought. At the register, I was told that an easy way to figure out what is considered a regular donut vs specialty donut is if it has a hole in it, it's a regular donut. So the second time I went, I ordered half a dozen "regular" donuts but the bill came out to be $8+. I didn't think much of it when I left the store but after getting home, it just didn't seem right. Overall the donuts taste good but if you're a stickler for pricing, confirm before you start ordering. Definitely my responsibility to ask but also the responsibility of the cashier to explain instead of just giving a final dollar amount. read more

I mean, let's face it, the place is kinda dingy, a rather depressing hole in the wall that seems to be a magnet for the homeless, quasi-homeless, drifters, trolls and a whole assortment of other misfits and miscreants. (Hey, where else am I gonna get to use such cool words!) I suppose on the flip side this speaks to being open LATE, which in Albany seems to mean beyond 8 p.m.! I'd give it a half star for that if I could...but since I can't, TWO stars it is! In sum: Good place to pick up a donut you crave, just go in and out as fast as you can, hold a conversation with any of the sitting patrons or look at the floor. Not sure what you are looking for, imaginary cranky donut snob. This place is happy, inviting, and has fresh baked goods. Some people prefer special types of donuts, I get that. This one is traditional, but really good. Plus one star for some seriously friendly people. I have come here every couple months over the years when I drive by, and it's just sooo good and gives me such a warm fuzzy homey feeling. The comforting smell of donuts and coffee permeates the place. The gals behind the counter are friendly and have personalities. The donuts are great with a nice crunchy outside with a chewy textured dough inside. The coffee is great too, with self-serve carafes with decent variety (Regular, French Roast, Decaf, Hazelnut and Kona). It's not the best, slickest, corporate looking donut place in the world, but it's how things used to be and that's fine. FANTASTIC donuts, well priced and lots of selection.. the best part? OPEN 24 HOURS A DAY! I came here after biking with the east bay bike party last night and we stopped in to satiate our hunger for sweets and boy were we in for a treat! So many different kinds of donuts, fresh baked constantly throughout the day, and plenty of places to sit make this donut shop one of the best i have ever been to. i took off a star because the lady helping us was completely deaf or didnt understand english very well as she screwed up every order before us, including mine....shame on me for not checking the bag before walking away. I must say that I grew up on Colonial Donuts in Oakland and consider it, and always will, my second home. So I'm bias, but this place makes a mean donut! The dough is light and fluffy. The fry action is a light golden brown (much different than Colonial). The maple bars, raised, old fashion, are off the hook! The donut holes are also as good as it gets! The bagels are good, the cut fruit is nice, and the coffee is hot. Great service, Silvia and the whole crew are really sweet and take good care of their customers. OPEN 24/7!! Easy parking!! In the wee hours of the morning, everything tastes better. I come here on occasion to pick up donuts for work or whatever but the place really isn't spectacular although they offer an OK selection. To my amusement, on my most recent trip, I noticed that they also sell lottery tickets. For some reason, I find that hilarious! Really who buys a ticket in a donut shop? But it is not as funny as my Yelp addiction of 203 reviews (183 originals & 20 updates) that I have acquired since writing my first two reviews a year ago. But then I noticed all the flies that were also in the glass counter, which is nice, cause you get the extra eggs the Fly lays in the donuts and any fecal matter.
