Happy garden sounds like just another run-of-the-mill Cheap Chinese place. There are no shortage of these places because they serve a massive clientele of hungry locals. My family has a curse with these Chinese-American takeout places. We have a great experience the first few times and then the food starts arriving of a much lesser caliber. That being said, Happy Garden is my current place for a healthy, fresh Chinese American Combo Meal. They use fresh, clean vegetables and clean meat. I would prefer to have the tiniest amount of high quality meat in my food, more like a seasoning, atop a bed of varied greens. These guys do a good job of keeping the vegetables good without the big compromise: it's either loaded with piles of low grade meat in cornstarch, with a few veg for garnish, OR its so nutritious and delicious that they move to Williamsburg and I never hear another word.. Surprisingly clean beef in my veg. I am excited to try more things! But once my spouse ordered green beans without meat, but didn't know how to get the usual sauce. So he just ordered it regular instead of "beef with stringbeans, no beef"...and they served it in garlic sauce. Lots of places do this if you order it without meat; a real Chinese string bean might be topped with ground pork in the seasonings even if you asked for the non-meat version, because that is the traditional way to order it. Should you find yourself in the strange new world of people craving Chinese American Fast Food from whichever era you spawned, then I recommend trying as many local Chinese American places as you can. This one has the sauce-veg-meat ratio we are looking for, and the kinds of combination platters that can feed the whole darn bunch. read more

My fiance looovvvves the veggie chow fun and she's had many a veggie chow fun in her day, let me tell you... We always get edamame and scallion pancakes for starters -- their pancakes are perfectly crispy and flakey; not soggy or chewy. Just moved to "The Ridge" three days ago so we're still in the 'living-off-delivery-orders' phase, as we unpack. Saturday night, the moving crew cleared out and we ordered from Happy Garden for dinner. We were blown away by the wonton soup, alone! The broth is so rich and the wontons are super meaty and flavorful; it's magic! The eggrolls were impressive! And the fried dumplings were just as delicious as the wontons; some magical spice mix they use! Sunday, guess what we had for lunch? Happy Garden Chinese food. We had more wonton soup (addictive!!). Next, we had teriyaki beef sticks, which were heavenly. So tender and flavorful. We had fried chicken wings and my man stared off at the bare wall for two or three minutes to ponder and reflect on how life-changing their fried chicken wings were; they're THAT good. Monday Monday Monday... What's for lunch? Happy Garden! More wonton soup, fried shrimp dumplings, and more beef sticks. We've been here three days and ordered from them every day. Before visiting New York a white person told me there's was great Chinese food in Bay Ridge. I immediately disregarded this information and went on with my day because I'm only here for food fads. For some reason - maybe it was halloween, maybe it was the lack of MSG in my veins - I got a craving for Chinese food and marched down to Happy Garden. Inside, Happy Garden has all the charm of a front for money laudnering - formica tables, harsh fluorescent lighting, only plus was the full seats with a happily eating family. I did appreciate the photographs of entrees because I'm almost always too lazy to read past the first 3 items on a menu. I ordered beef with fresh mushroom which was prepared quickly and for $7 a reasonable portion size. Luckily, I brought cash because there is a $10 minimum for credit. My meal did not spur a Chinese food binge because the beef was tender, but lacking flavor, and the sauce was too salty. The titular mushrooms did not seem particularly fresh. I might come back if I need a quick, cheap bite, but won't cry if I never return. read more

This is a great place if you're looking for a quick takeout meal and some pretty good Chinese food at a really good price. The food is consistent in quality and is always delivered very quickly. The reason why I really like this place is because they have a larger selection of vegetarian options more than your regular Chinese restaurant. On a lark I searched Chinese food places with vegetarian options on Seamless. It seems like both yesterday and forever ago. But it was probably just last month. Since then, I've found myself craving the vegetarian chicken & broccoli. I love it so much so that when Happy Garden goes dark on Seamless for no explicable reason I actually physically drag my ass up the block to order in person from the delightful and always busy young woman at the counter. Is it life changing? no...but their fried dumplings are pretty awesome and their chicken and broccoli is good for the neighborhood. I can only concur with the thrust of other reviews and what fellow neighbours have to say. The word on the street is by-and-large correct in this case. I ordered the sample appetizers platter (chicken tenders, fried pork bun, chicken wings, spring roll) and I was quite well pleased. Although a humble meal, the thing I noticed was that the battering and frying were all done (as the phrase goes) 'to perfection'. I mean let me tell you whut. Everything was precisely, crispy crunchy, deep-brown, golden, fried. I gave particular attention to the wings because any red-blooded American male is always looking for a fail-safe back-up, keep-in-reserve wings place. Although these sampler-platter wings weren't drumstick or 2-bone Buffalo-style wings they were more like full-size wings as you'd find in a bucket of Colonel. They weren't "sauced". But as I stated above, they were supremely, inordinately well-fried; like the tastiest fried-chicken you ever had. Big kudos as well go--and deservedly so--to the clever, deep-fried pork buns. Handled here, unlike I've tasted anywhere else in this boro. And I reside very near Brooklyn Chinatown. But see, most Chinese eateries don't deep-fry their buns when asked for fried pork buns. What most joints do is simply toss buns in a skillet until browned crispy on one side. This is the only way they might differ from 'steamed pork buns'. Not so, at Happy Garden. Nope. Not the case at all. Fans, I'm here to tell you that here at Happy Garden they take their pork buns and apparently hurl them right down into a bubbling vat of deep frying oil. Dunk them down until they squeal. The result are little pop-em-in-yo'-mouf morsels of pork and batter goodness. Unusual! My advice to you is to make these a standard part of any order here. The rest of the menu, I have yet to sample. But I did note that the prices were mighty easy to swaller. Verdict: cheap and good Far Eastern eats! read more

Standard Chinese fast-food. Nothing terrible and nothing spectacular. They work super fast on your order (especially for lunch) and the gentleman who cooks the food in the late morning/early afternoon is very nice. I like their broccoli and garlic sauce lunch special and be aware they put peas in their fried rice (i like it, some people may not). Hands down the best Chinese takeout in the neighborhood. You can't go wrong with any of the stir fries (chicken + broccoli, beef + broccoli, chicken with cashews), general tso's or the chicken wings. I have never had a bad experience from this place. Even though they're further from our house, my boyfriend and I happily wait the extra 15ish minutes (if that) that it takes for our food to come because we have enjoyed it so much. Their shrimp egg rolls are delicious and full of actual whole shrimp. We've tried lots of standards on the menu and have yet to be disappointed.
