Love this place. I'm trying to branch out in my new community and I've always got to know where the good Chinese food is. The dining section is not open, but you can still do takeout orders. Happy Garden is at the top when it comes to Chinese-American food. Everyone always thinks they have the "best Chinese place" around the corner from their house which, I suppose, is a testament to how enjoyable Chinese-American food is. What sets Happy Garden apart is attention to detail. The dishes aren't swimming in sauce, the sauce is an excel compliment to the main ingredient. They've got excellent egg rolls, something that's increasingly hard to come by. The staff is always pleasant and, in the age of COVID-19, they're being extra careful and conscientious about hygiene. I only wish I lived in this neighborhood, in fact I'm regularly passing several other Chinese restaurants on my way to get food from Happy Garden, because they're worth it. read more

This is my second time trying this restaurant. The first time the food was okay but not great. I decided to give it another try and spent over $60 in food. The food was beyond basic and it made my daughter feel sick. My son and I did not eat most of the food. I called the restaurant back and to my dismay, the owner, a woman who hung the phone up on me told me she would do NOTHING about this situation. Buyer beware. HORRIFIC customer service And she told me that she wouldn't do anything to help. I called back to get her name and she hung up. If you want terrible Chinese food, go to the Happy Garden in Redford. I have been eating Happy Garden since I was a baby, so for the past 27 years! When I tell you this is the only place my family and I get our Chinese food! They have been consistent all this time. Happy Garden is less than five minutes from my house and has become my quick go to when I want Chinese food. I usually order the crab rangoon each time. It's so good. The sweet and sour chicken is my dish of choice from any Chinese restaurant, and it's really good here. I also like the egg foo young, wonton soup, sesame chicken, and general tso's chicken. The fried rice is nothing special. Very basic. But otherwise, I'm glad I can get good Chinese food so close to home. read more

They used to be really good before Covid & then they went downhill. I quit going to them but I gave them a few shots here & there & was always disappointed! Tonight was no different. I hadn't been there in a very long time & my other place who is usually exceptionally good China kitchen express on middlebelt just happened to be closed today for some reason which is not like them so I went & tried happy garden again - I wish I hadn't! I The chicken was hard & chewy even though I told them lightly done- the gravy was freaking orange not brown or yellow gravy but orange & the rice tasted & looked like it had sat in a pot for days. Plus I asked for a spring roll instead of an egg roll & no substitutions but ordered A spring roll extra that was about as big as my pinky & that was yucky as well. I ate part of it & then had to eat something else to get awful taste out of my mouth. The only thing I can say that was still decent just like the past was the wonton soup but again I said decent and nothing better!! read more

This little strip center Has been here for years!! And has had various proprietors come and go. Happy Garden has been here for as long as I can remember. I remember way back in the late 60s as a kid my mother used to bring us here. But anywho, have recently been getting carry-out for my senior mother, and Happy Gardens still delivers. This is pretty standard Americanized Chinese fare. A lot of sauce, pretty salty, but actually decent quality ingredients and large portions for the price. I recommend the egg foo young, but get the sauce on the side or you'll drown in it. My boyfriend ordered the sweet and sour chicken and really liked it, again, a ton of sauce. The crab rangoon were on point, and so were the Chinese donuts (tip: eat them while they're piping hot. If you wait, they taste like the fryer that has also been frying fish). As far as the service and facilities, they're not the friendliest, but it's clean inside and they're quick to churn out food. If you enter through the back door, you almost walk through the kitchen, so use the front door if there's street parking available. We haven't been back since our first order, but I feel a craving coming on. Overall, would recommend. read more

Very good basic Chinese food. We like the egg rolls, fat, crispy full of flavor! Curry Chicken is probably the best that I have ever had! The hubby likes the Sweet n Sour enough to order it ever time. The Egg Drop soup is just so so. But you wont leave hungry!!! Portions are hefty but the final check is not. Very reasonable prices. Usually my Yelpians are right on...but this time missed the bar. I mean it was inexpensive but for the few bucks I saved I should have gone to my normal place. A classic favorite place to grab some Chinese with friends when I'm visiting the old neighborhood. Happy Garden has been in this tiny little multi-tenant building forever and you'll know it when you walk in; the decor is woefully dated and the booth seating is patched with duct tape. Don't let the appearance fool you, though. They're serving up some pretty good stuff. Particular favorites of my circle and I include the Crab Rangoon, General Tso's chicken, beef chow mein, fried rice and egg rolls. About what you'd expect a Midwesterner to order at a Chinese restaurant, I guess. The egg rolls in particular are plump, semi-soft and stuffed full of sprouts and other goodies...simply delish. You can't get them like that in Florida (my current stomping grounds)...they do not exist. It's super small inside, so plan to carry out if you have a big crew with you. I'm not sure of their hours, but we commonly pick up from here in the late evenings. To this day, one of my friends stops by here several times a month from his place 20 minutes away, when he could more easily visit any Chinese restaurant in his neck of the woods. Is it the tasty vittles or just the nostalgia? Perhaps a little of both. read more

I used to look forward to my Chinese food binges from the best place in town.. unfortunately that's not even remotely close to being the case anymore... They closed down for their annual trip to China and ever since they reopened for business their food prices have made a dramatic increase and their quality has taken a drastic decline.. I'm sorely disappointed in the service and the hospitality presented while dining in.. This place used to be super good. The last couple visits I've had a less than stellar experience. The general chicken is very soggy all of a sudden. Always searching for good Chinese I finally found something comparable to my favorite and really- better- judging just from my one visit. I yelped reviews and pictures and decided to let my first try be the sesame chicken (#11). The sauce was amazing. It had a hint of brown sugar or cinnamon or something sweet and delicious. The chicken was not fatty and super tender. The rice couldn't have been cooked more perfectly. My spouse got the Mongolian beef done with medium spice (#17). Beef was so tender. Spice was not weak which is often done. Now egg rolls or spring rolls aren't my thing but they looked delicious if I could get past what the inside looks like lol. My eyes said yum my tongue wasn't willing to take on the texture. Now no one measures up to my favorite place for wonton and this place didn't either but I will still compliment it. The won ton wasn't super thick and starchy but wasn't as thin as I like it (seriously only one place does it the way I like). Usually there's a big ball of meat inside the wonton (some barely anything depending how crappy it gets ha) Happy Garden kind of had a layer thing going on which made it unique. What I loved is that tons of veggies were floating at the top and no place does it like that. They put their stamp on their food. Really the #11 was perfect! I thought I liked this place. Eat in twice and just had my second carry-out. The won-ton soup is great but the dumplings are not firm nor sealed tightly - they come apart too easily. The spring rolls were great in the restaurant - nice and crunchy exterior. These last two carry-outs (won-ton soup and spring rolls) were disappointing. Dumplings fell apart and the spring rolls were greasy and under cooked. Not crunchy or browned from the deep fryer but doughy and greasy. read more

WOW! I hadn't been to Happy Garden in many years. A friend posted a comment on FaceBook about how great it is there, so I thought I'd give it another try. The old owners didn't take credit cards, but the new owners do. We ordered the General Tso's Chicken, Sweet and Sour Pork, Pork Fried Rice With Mushrooms, Shrimp Fried Rice and Egg Rolls. Everything was incredibly wonderful. We used to go to a Chinese place on 5 Mile near Merriman, but now my entire family agreed that the new and improved Happy Garden is our new favorite place. The workers were really nice, our food was nice and hot when we got it home and the chicken and pork were tender and great. My parents joined us for dinner and my 84 year old father said it was probably the best Chinese food he ever had. Thanks for a great meal Happy Garden!!! read more

This place has been my favorite Chinese carryout for years but they close alot for long periods of time, the last time they did it a lil over a month ago said they were gonna be closed for like 6 weeks for some reason once again, that being said it forced me to seek out another chinese carryout place as I ordered from there at least once a week and couldnt go 6 weeks waiting for them to decide to open again. I tried 3 different new places and none were very good, I gave one more try and found rainbow chinese at 9mi and Farmington rd, there food was excellent and huge portions, so I now go there,sorry happy garden you cant run a part time business and expect to keep full time customers...peace out! read more

My husband and I moved to Redford a few months ago and tried Happy Garden after reading reviews about the General Tsaos Chicken. Our first time here we both got an order of it plus some Crab Rangoons and Egg Drop Soup. It was so good that it is now what we get every time we order here. Plus I love that you can request how spicy you want your Gen. Tsaos chicken. It is good for my husband who likes mild and me that loves spicy. My husband has also had the sweet-and-sour pork and said it was good. I would definitely recommend this place. read more
