A hip coffee shop in a middle of a semi industrial district in Ottawa certainly blew my mind. But the best coffee in town label was a definite seller. When you arrive to the front door you think that this is a warehouse and a coffee roasting "factory" rather than a coffee shop but in actuality it is both. The door to the coffee shop is somewhat nondescript entry to what may seem to be an office in the warehouse but when you walk in you see a quiet place with tables and a sort of a "coffee bar" stand where you can order a cup to stay or go. We were there on a Sunday so I can only imagine how busy it may get on a weekday because coffee is really good but a selection of pastries may need to have a little work. Coffee was amazing. Wow! I dropped my car off around the corner to get new tires, and to kill some time saw this place. On the outside and the surrounding area everything looks super industrial, so my expectations were really low. But step inside and this place teleports you to like a cool San Francisco like cafe with crafted coffees, nice selection of breakfast sandwiches and lunch sandwich options, pastries, and roasted coffee beans. Super cozy! I came on a weekend to catch up with friends, and the place was almost fully packed. I tried a caramel latte, and it wasn't too sweet, nor too bitter. I didn't need to add more sugar due to my sweet tooth, which I usually need to do elsewhere! They had some donuts and desserts, but I was hoping they would have a cake (their instagram page has lots of beautiful treats)! They didn't this time, but next time I drop by, I'll try a baked good. Definitely a hidden gem coffee shop! Tucked away in the industrial area behind Little Italy this eclectic coffee shop not only has a really cool vibe to it but the drinks and baked goods are amazing as well! I ordered a cappuccino and chocolate brioche and both were so good that I had to go back and order a chai tea as well! The coffee shop has a very hipster vibe to it with plenty of tables, fast wifi, cool decor, and super nice staff! They even have a bar full of different beers if that's more your calling. The only part that I wasn't a huge fan of was the choice of music - it was a mix of old school mashups which totally matches the whole vibe of the cafe but I would have a little bit of difficulty getting work done with it playing in the background. That being said, I would definitely come back here to try more of their menu items and hang out with friends - love it! read more

We wandered into this cozy spot this morning, hoping to get hot drinks to go for our drive to Montreal. Perhaps a vegan treat for my kid who has an egg allergy. My mom picked up a lb of Ethiopian coffee for my Dad. I had planned to get a latte, but a free cup of coffee came with the lb and Mom does not drink coffee. Fortuitous really. Happy Goat is an excellent place to meet up with friends when you don't feel like going to a bar. The atmosphere here is industrial, but welcoming, with lots of good sized tables for groups. Not only do they have the best coffee in Ottawa, but they also have local kombucha in bottles and Ontario beers on tap. We didn't partake in any of the pastries, but I noticed a lot of people enjoying some good looking treats (they even had vegan options). The people that work here could not be nicer. They forgot to put our order in, and when we reminded them, they gave us a card for a free drink on our next visit! They were also making cookies when we were there, and they came around and shared some with the clientele. Awesome people all around. I met the Happy Goat people at a food show back in December. They're a tiny shop that roasts coffee beans regularly and always ensures a fresh batch of roasted coffee. The owner seemed nice enough and we talked a bit about the coffee they offer. After some chit chat I purchased some Sumatran dark roast coffee. Delicious delicious coffee! Go to their online website and place an order! You can go pick up your coffee beans or they will deliver. All details are on their website. I'm very happy to find multiple roasters in Ottawa in the last few months. I'm still trying out different coffee beans from different roasters to determine which ones I like best. Favourite spot to grab a coffee and grab some great beans in Ottawa. I love the shop itself, which is in a cool almost-industrial location just outside both Little Italy and Hintonburg. In the summer, they open up the front so they have a patio with comfy chairs and a nice, open feel. In the winter they move it all in and keep it cozy. Lattes, Americanos, and drip coffee are all solid. Haven't tried any of their teas or treats, but the offer some pastries and tea in addition to the coffee-based beverages. This is also the best selection of Happy Goat beans in the city - at least that I've found. They have a wide array of beans and roasts, from more exotic and challenging African coffees like the Tanzania to divinely accessible, chocolatey Guatemala Antigua. The Sumatran beans are super earthy, but so smooth. The folks behind the counter will be happy to tell you about the different types of beans, and if you buy a large bag you get a free drip coffee with purchase. Could I ask for anything more? Well, a closer location and wifi. But it's still a great place with my favourite coffee in the city. read more

I love everything about this place. I love the atmosphere, the friendly service, and especially the coffee. Even if you don't take your coffee black, I would suggest you try a few sips without anything in it. I order either the normal or the iced coffee and enjoy the seating outdoors in the summer. A great local coffee roaster, but a far cry from what it used to be. A few years ago, Happy Goat Coffee was bought from Pierre, the original owner. Sadly, the quality of the coffee has been slowly going downhill since. Happy Goat Coffee started as a quaint establishment run from a garage on Lyndale Ave. The quality of the coffee was second to none. No compromises were made, as coffee was sold on the day of roasting, or the next day at worst. As Happy Goat Coffee underwent new ownership, it moved to Laurel Street. The establishment is certainly more inviting and a more comfortable sit down coffee shop than the original, but the quality of the coffee is lacking. Coffee is now sold within weeks of roasting, not days. What's more, it seems as though the origin of the beans has been changing. Many of the original single-origin coffees are no longer offered. The fresh and complex roasts of the past have now become stale and one dimensional in comparison. In retrospect: when you purchase a business, don't compromise on the qualities that made the original business a success in the first place. A trendier storefront cannot make up for the lack in quality of the actual product being sold. read more

A little off the beaten path is a hip coffee oasis worth exploring. When you first walk up to the shop, you wonder if you got the address right as it looks like you're coming up to an industrial looking building. There are two entrances, one of which is a garage door! Very cool. I usually get the regular drip coffee to go ($1.90), which is perfect for my taste. Somewhere between mild and medium, with no nasty burnt after taste that I usually find at premium coffee shops. It is my favourite cup of coffee in the city. The quality of the brew is consistently excellent, no matter the time of day. The service is always fantastic, I love their staff (I've never said that about a place before) but they always are genuine and go above and beyond. There is plenty of seating with comfy/ funky furniture. On warm days, you also have the option of sitting outside. Inside, there is a large table perfect for doing some work and several smaller tables great for sharing a coffee with a friend. What I love is that it's a great place to have a conversation and just relax as there is no annoying loud music playing like in most other coffee shops. If you're lucky, you can see them roast the coffee beans in house. If you miss the action, you can still see the roaster and take pictures. Also, when you buy a 1 pound bag of coffee, you get one free coffee (up to a latte), how awesome is that? We have also tried their frozen hot chocolate which my boyfriend wasn't a huge fan of (a bit bland) and I didn't love the two desserts I tried (lemon square and brownie). However, they made my cousin an amazing off the menu London Fog because they were out of the Chai mix for the drink she wanted to order (see what I mean about service that goes above and beyond?). I always used to buy my coffee beans for my espresso machine from Bridgehead however, for whatever reason, their beans have become much drier (no oils left in them even when freshly roasted) so it was harder and harder for me to pull a nice shot on my espresso machine. Anyways, in looking around for a new place to buy beans, I decided to try Happy Goat out as I had seen their coffee in stores along Wellington Street. Suffice it to say, I've been buying my beans from them now for the last two months and each time the beans have been freshly roasted. A pound lasts me about 1- 1.5 weeks and even near the end it is still easy to pull a nice shot of espresso. Price wise, a pound of decaf will cost $21 which is a bit more than Bridgehead ($14 for 340g) but you do get a bit more in the bag (454g vs 340g). Buying a pound of beans entitles you to a select free drink. I can't remember which ones are completely free, but you get a discount on a latte that works out to it only costing $2. It's nice that in Ottawa we have two great local places to get coffee. I now get my beans from Happy Goat and I hit up Bridgehead when I want to buy myself a latte. read more

There is a nice selection of beans from various regions and they even carry a few blends. I ended up getting the Ethiopian Limu which was only $10. It's definitely less expensive here than what is common with local roasters in Toronto. The espresso I ordered however was disappointing. There was little crema and it was a bit watery and one dimensional. Hopefully the beans I got will turn out well when brewing at home, otherwise I wouldn't recommend this place unless you're already in the area. read more
