We met Meri through Happy Roots doing the landscaping for our HOA. He had told us that he could build a retaining wall for us. Halfway through we found out he wasn't licensed (after telling us he was) and we couldn't let him finish the work. We are still trying to get our money back since we paid him a second payment ($8,000) to finish the wall that he never did the work on. Would not recommend working with this company since they hire dishonest employees who steal money. read more

DO NOT USE! This is my second review on yelp and I am honestly only posting it to protect others. I hate negative reviewers because so many times I believe they over do it. I really want to help people avoid what I just experienced. Ben represents himself as licensed. He is not. He even brought over paperwork to show that his license was "fixed." Three months into a "5-6 week" job, I rechecked his license and he was still not licensed. After 14 weeks he left me with warnings from the city because of his mess, unfinished work, poorly finished fire pit, and stains from his mess on the pavers he did complete. He also broke two of my crawlspace vents, left so much dirt on my stucco I have to get it cleaned and fog coated, and a giant amount of dirt in my front yard that I need to now haul away. The worst part is he is a nice guy. However, nice guys won't get your property fixed, or your money back. We should have fired him from our job the minute we realized he wasn't licensed. That is our fault. Learn from our mistakes and don't hire him. read more

I would not recommend Happy Roots. I thoroughly depend on Yelp but this time it definitely failed me. I question the validity of the reviews. Ben requested $525 for a 3D rendering for the landscaping. We could either use the rendering if we would like to proceed with Happy Roots or use it for another contractor. I promptly agreed to at least get the 3D rendering and provided the payment. We anxiously waited a week and finally Ben came over to show the what he had been working on. To say the least, I was disappointed. He spent no more than 5 minutes pasting images together. I wouldn't expect this from a landscape designer. So I gave him my suggestions and wanted version two. After repeated emails for the second version, finally after several weeks, I received version two of the drawings. Unfortunately, they were more of the same type of drawings put together out of scale and not detailed enough to do anything with. I wasn't going to invest more time in this company at this point. In short, I think the $525 was a waste of money. I actually downloaded the 3D software and rendered my own drawings . I don't think I should plead and beg for a business owner to do what was promised. To me it seemed like Happy Roots was stringing me along and was never very serious about gaining the business. Maybe they had other projects in queue. I cannot comment of the other Yelp reviews, but after using many contractors in previous years, this was one I was displeased with. read more

Recently we hired Happy Roots to renovate our backyard. The project involved demo, a decorative fence and a gate, raised vegetable planters, flagstone area, a DG pathway, and a cascade water feature. The overall experience was great and the final results exceeded our expectations. I first interviewed few Yelp top rated landscaping companies, among which Happy Roots came to the top. The project manager, Mari, was professional, yet easy to work with. He gave us lots of ideas and answered all the questions we had. When he told me that Happy Roots also did landscaping for my neighbor's yard, which we really liked, I knew I found the right company. To make the most of our small yard, we asked Ben to do the computer 3D Design. Ben was very knowledgeable for plant selections and has a great eye for design. The 3D design plan really helped us to visualize the finish product. Since we wanted more than we had planned, the total costs exceeded our budget, but Amy made accommodation to help us to stay within our budget. I think their price is kind of on the middle. Meri and his team worked super hard and paid attention to details. They even worked on rainy days and Thanksgiving holidays. Once in awhile I pointed out something was different than I expected, a quick adjustment was done the same or next day. What transformation! We had high hope and now the results were even better. I feel our living space has been extended. I would highly recommend Happy Roots Landscaping for my friends, neighbors, and everyone. They are professional, creative, and also affordable. Ben is very creative and knowledgeable about plants, and made great suggestions about what will work for our realistic level of effort (no "green thumb" in our family). I felt like there was clear communication and follow up that fit what we discussed. And, we are super happy with the results! Our yard is on the smaller side, so we need to make the most of it, and Ben's ideas are great improvements. Ben, Amy and their team are top notch for landscape design and/or maintenance. We bought a house with a "flipped" yard (plant a, plant b, plant a, plant b - repeat) and found it very boring after living with it for 6 months. While we wanted a very purposeful, designed yard we didn't have a huge budget in place. We're also military and will probably end up renting our house out so we were looking for something fairly low maintenance, low water, yet still nice looking and enjoyable. Ben came out a few times and talked to us about what we wanted then brought out some design plans to show us. He listened attentively to all of our desires and it showed in his designs. We tweaked a couple of small things together, then it was ready to go! He and his guys (and sweet Mabel the dog) came in and made it happen! They dug up our grass, redid our slope, trimmed trees, and put in the new design. It looks awesome and a million times better already than before....and it hasn't even started to grow in yet! When I lived in San Diego I knew that I needed to have a landscape design for my yard, before committing to doing the actual project. We had big plans and wanted to be sure that all the elements that I wanted, built in BBQ, fire pit, flagstone walk way and paver patio would all fit together. I contacted several landscape companies and didn't get the right feeling. There were a few that offered to do free landscape designs, but I had the feeling that they were new to business didn't want to go that route. The landscape design was too important. I found Happy Roots Landscape and after talking with Amy on the phone and meeting with Ben in person, knew I found a company that I could work with. When you hire Happy Roots Landscape you get the whole package. I knew the investment I was spending on my yard would be worth it and even if they weren't the cheapest company, I knew I was hiring the right one. They are very responsive and from setting up the initial appointment, to signing the contract and having my first design presentation, everything was really smooth and I was very happy. I was blown away with their computerized 3D images. I couldn't believe how it turned out and then they turned over hard copies of hardscape, irrigation, planting as well as the jpg images. We are going to wait for a few months to do the install but know we have not seen the last of Amy & Ben. I highly recommend this company for any of your landscape design needs. Really bad. Run, don't walk, in the other direction. I won't bore you with the details but: (1) poor communication and follow through, (2) ever changing pricing between owner and his wife who said things that were 18o degrees in conflict, (3) billed for doing charts of sprinklers that I had, (4) the work he did had to be fixed thereafter and the repairer could not believe the shoddy job. I cannot recommend this company. While I think Ben at Happy Roots has a talent for landscape design and we liked the end result overall, the communication was horrendous. And since others had same issues, thought I really needed to share mine. We used Happy Roots for yard maintenance for a couple years prior to our landscape project. During that time, I noticed some gaps in communication and follow through but nothing that seemed major, in and of itself. We had never had yard care before and liked them enough to consider them for our lawn removal/redesign project. I wish now that I had considered those earlier communication lapses as bigger red flags - I learned a good lesson there. First, it took 6 weeks (from the date we first met to discuss the project) for Ben to just provide plan ideas. Once we agreed to the plans and said we wanted to move forward with the project, it took another 5+ weeks just to hear back about next steps. And mind you, we're just not hearing anything during this time (we were actually close to finding another company but again ignored the red flag). Once the project began (with contract signing and demo), an estimated 2-3 week landscaping project lasted almost 7 weeks and was only sort of complete. I actually had to take over one of the final tasks (which involved working with a subcontractor) because I could not trust Happy Roots to follow through. I started out with a lot of flexibility and patience. But even after I voiced frustrations with communication (repeatedly) and gave very detailed and reasonable expectations, they still were not met and often there was no communication about why. Further, Ben missed two separate pre-scheduled meetings with both me and with the subcontractor and failed to text or communicate about what was going on, wasting both of our time. This was really the final straw for me. I don't think they are bad people. When I complained (over and over), I got a lot of apologies and appreciation for my patience. I think they tried to make good in the end, best they could. But I kind of felt I was told over and over what they thought I wanted to hear. To get the project to completion, I felt I was forced into making threats and I absolutely hated that. And the most frustrating thing was - not much changed. I complained and then all I got were more false promises of what would be done and then apologies when I was forced to shout about delays or missed work items. On a very expensive project, I felt I had to do a lot of micromanaging. I hate writing bad reviews and hate to kick a company (or a person) while they're down. I usually just walk away and let bygones be bygones. But I also wouldn't want anyone else going through the frustration that I just went through. I'm only writing this review after having given Happy Roots a drop-dead completion date, where I was transparent that failure to complete the project by that date would result in me publicizing my input. And this was another deadline not met. So I hope this poor review is not a surprise, if the company reviews it. I hope that Happy Roots takes this feedback to heart and makes some necessary improvements. Maybe it's just poor organization or something that can be resolved with a good office manager. As I said, I think Ben has a talent and great artistic view and what he did do was really nicely done (as far as I can currently tell). But that's where it ends for me. read more

Seems like the low raters have similar experiences, mainly about communication. Take this as constructive criticism: There must be a better way to communicate with your clients. I was the one having to initiate and pin down when someone would be out at our property. If I didn't email, call or text, it was several days up to a week with no response. The general response given was, "someone will be there this week" which is vague. After someone came out for the second time to fix what they didn't finish the first time, it was still messy and an entire section on the side of the house was missed. It looked it was done in a rush and no care was taken. When you guys came out to check on our irrigation system I was optimistic we could work together and get it fixed. A week went by, no estimate or word on when we would receive it. If you're busy no problem, just communicate that. I'm a believer of second chances unfortunately there is some babysitting involved working with Happy Roots. read more

They treat your property like it is their own. I just read the other reviews and was shocked by the negative ones because our experience couldn't have been better. First of all, he was always quick to respond to my questions. Ben was extremely tidy and cleaned at the end of each day. He was careful with our belongings. When he was finished with the 3-week project, he power washed everything. He also touched up our fences and painted areas of stucco, making our property look brand new. Ok, for those that don't want to read a lengthy review and just want the yay or nay.... HIRE HAPPY ROOTS! You will not be disappointed! As a customer who just spent some serious cash having them install a major demo and hard scape project and not just maintaining my grass and plants, I'm more than pleased with my experience. Ok, for anyone still reading, here's my experience... Bought our house in late 2010 and have spent the last couple years bringing the required, but not-so-fun, projects up to date. You know.... foundation, roof, plumbing type fun stuff. The house was build in '37 (that's 1937 for you young-ins out there) and needed some love. Well, those projects were finally squared away this spring with a final foundation project and it was time to move on to the fun stuff. I think I would have gone for the bathroom first, but the spousal unit insisted on renovating part of our backyard. Prior to any upgrades, our backyard was essentially a dirt pit. There were some funky trees, a cracked old patio with steps coming out of the house that dropped off to nowhere (not safe for our little one... or me after several beers), and was generally in a poor state of dis-repair. We had a basic idea of what we wanted for the 1/3 or so that we were going to renovate (want to do more, but only so much cash to go around), and it was time to select a builder. Now, if you've read this far, you're probably an avid Yelp user like myself. I've used Yelp to find our foundation guy, carpenter, plumber/HVAC company, drywall guy, and roofer. While its an exhausting process of reading reviews and screening the best in person, it has yet to fail me. So, in need of a landscape company capable of a large job like ours, I hit the reviews. In all, I contacted 4 companies to come listen to our ideas, give theirs, and issue a bid. One company (not HRL) seemed honest, put together a very nice 3D rendering, and though the price was higher than I wanted and it involved altering materials and using some existing parts I wanted to demo, they seemed to be the answer. In fact, I'd had to wait 2 weeks or so for Ben to come to my house to check it out and give me a preliminary bid (if this happens to you, wait for Ben to come out... it'll be worth the wait!!!). Fortunately, this other company took their time coming up with an actual contract and I finally met with Ben. I explained what we wanted, and mentioned that I didn't think that our budget would allow for saltillo tile or for demo'ing the existing patio based on what the other company had told me. Ben's answer, instead of taking the easy road and agreeing with me (or insisting it would cost more) was "let me check it out and get back to you, it might be possible". At that point, I was interested to at least see what they came back with. Without getting into too many specifics, and as a result writing a 100 page novel as a Yelp review, I'll say that the bid was considerably lower than the competition AND included demolition and rebuild of the existing patio AND allowed for tile instead of stamped concrete. It also included a new fence (the old one being rather weathered) along the side of the area to be renovated. As we proceeded forward in the design process, Ben allowed for all kinds of details and modifications to be customized to our specifications. For example, our death trap stairs from the house? They now curve around from the opening and fan away as you step down, making it safe no matter where you come down at. The gate from the front to the back yard? We pretty much told the crew what we wanted when it came time, and they built it from scratch, including my wife's desire for a deadbolt lock. Once work had begun, I noticed the crew was addressing details I hadn't thought of, and more amazingly, weren't part of our contract! There is an area where a gutter comes down from the house... they ran a drain under the patio to keep the water from rushing down the patio. There was a sprinkler control valve and hose connection where there was now going to be tile. The crew relocated it to the back of the house. There were areas along the bottom of the house that the paint had chipped away. The guys painted those. There are support columns from where the roof overhangs the patio where the paint was chipping away as well. On one of the last days, I look outside and see a worker painting those as well! In all, the attention to detail was amazing. The crew started on time, was at the job all day, finished the project on time, and the workmanship was great. I will definitely hire them when its time for Phase 2! The project involved demo, building a sitting wall, pouring concrete (while supporting the roof), tile, fencing, a direct line gas fire pit, arbor, and a custom gate. Total area was 6-700 SQ FT. read more

We hired Ben and his team to work on our backyard and fence. It was pretty worn out by the previous owners. We wanted to transform the place and also have an irrigation system (but keeping in mind we have several years of drought going on in Cali). To me it seemed very complicated but Ben completely took over and made it happen! He even came up with more ideas to transform the backyard to a beautiful oasis! The plants he chose I would never have found and the fence he and his team set up is gorgeous and an eye catcher. I can't say enough about how impressed I am with Happy Roots! Amy and Meri far exceeded our expectations. Happy Roots went above and beyond to create a wonderful yard for our little bungalow. I hired Happy Roots Landscape to be my landscape architect because my neighbors used them and they were pleased. I don't have experience to compare them to anyone else because this was the first time I hired a landscape architect and they were the only ones I met with, but I can say that the landscape design that Ben did was first rate. We even went through the city to get the water rebate and Ben and Amy helped us navigate this frustrating process. When it came to the permits required for the project, Ben helped us with those too. Not only is he a great designer but he was a great project manager through this whole thing. I had a great experience with this company. I know how hard it is to come out on short notice. I own a painting company. We were finishing a job up in La Mesa when one of my guys had stepped on a irrigation pipe and broke it! We were literally 15 minutes away from leaving the job in tip top shape. Plus it was already 4 on a Friday! Obviously as a business owner I had to take care of this issue. I called a few companies and finally spoke with Amy from Happy Roots. She was very polite and was amazingly able to send out a guy named Merri to fix the issue. Merri was very polite and knowledgable too. The homeowner who we were working for was very happy with there work. I myself, am super impressed with this business. The unexpected will happen... We were desperate to get rid of the rocks in our front yard and put in some drought tolerant plants. We had some plans that a friend created for us and we were looking for a landscaper who could work with those plans and get the front yard looking great. We got several quotes and Happy Roots gave us the best price. They were also more than willing to look at the plans that we had and work with them rather than charging us for an all new design (which many other landscapers required). First I have to say that Amy is so great to work with. She always gets back to you super quick and is so friendly and helpful. A lot of the plants in our original plan were unavailable and Ben picked some wonderful substitutes that we are so happy with. He is definitely super knowledgable about plants. During the process we had some moments of indecisiveness and Ben was able to tell us what would and would not do well in our yard but also get us the lush colorful look that we were hoping for. From demo to installation to cleanup the whole job was done really quickly and professionally. They even came back from time to time to check on the plants and make adjustments to the water system (one time they even mowed our back yard for us). When some of the original plants did not do so well, Amy sent someone out and replaced the plants so the yard is looking better than ever. It was so great to work with everyone at Happy Roots and we definitely got what we were looking for. Best of all we stayed in our budget. The final cost was not much more than the original estimate which we really appreciated (the additional costs were due to changes in plant choices and quantity on our part). Overall I would highly recommend Happy Roots for anyone's landscaping project. We are planning on working with Ben and Amy again next year when we redo the backyard and we are already looking forward to the great results we know we will get from Happy Roots. read more

When my wife and I decided to redo our yard we didn't know where to start. Of course we looked at yelp for landscape people and found the one we used! When we called Amy explained the process and we chose to have Meri come out right away as it didn't require much landscape design work. Of the landscapers we called Meri was able to come out the next day. We got a landscape estimate the same day and we began the landscape project. We also found out that they do landscape Mai tenancy and after 3 months of maintenance service we are very pleased. My husband and I hired this company and although it turned out fairly well, we would never recommend this company to anyone. It was so hard to communicate with them as they seem to only want to text or e mail . We were constantly checking on the workmanship , correcting mistakes and problems that we felt we were the contractor ourselves. When we were not happy with the selection of drought tolerant plants (we said specifically we did not want tropical look we wanted more Mediterranean look,) we seem to be pressured by Amy to let her place the order as she wanted to finish project quickly. Constantly texting us to let her order plants even though we did not like the selection made us feel that our opinions were not considered. I will say they did try at the end to remedy problems, order the right plants, get the job done to our satisfaction and have us be happy with the end result. However, the process was long, annoying , and painful and we would never want to get another text from Amy again... So for that reason would never want any of our friends to go through any of that as well. No recommendation from us..sorry guys. read more

When I lived in San Diego I had Yelp help me pick a few landscapers for the iron project I was looking at doing for my backyard. Of course, everyone I called said that they could do custom iron jobs and after two came out it was obvious that they had no idea what they were talking about. I wish people would just admit they can't do iron. Anyway, the third person I called (wish it had been the first) was Happy Roots Landscape and although I didn't know if they did iron work, they said they did and also offered me three addresses to go view prior to me even meeting with them. I checked out their work and was very impressed with the iron work, so I met with them and also liked them very much. They came out and gave me a quote for the iron work and also made some easy quick suggestions on the landscape. I liked them very much that I hired them to do the landscape maintenance for my property and also to do the custom iron work. Sorry for the long yelp review...my point is they are an awesome company and you will be very happy to called them. We hired Ben and Happy Roots to transform our gross dirt lot backyard. The first great thing about Ben was that he showed us a computerized plan for the landscape design for free. The other landscapers we talked to wanted upwards of $500 for the same thing. Second, Ben was happy to match the quotes that we received from other landscapers for our irrigation system. Third, Ben and his crew got things done quickly and fixed anything that was not perfect right away without question. Fourth, Ben's price was extremely reasonable and did not change throughout the process. Finally, Ben finished the landscaping on our house over a year ago. Everything that he bought and planted is still alive, while some plants that we bought and asked him to plant died. We had Ben put in sod, a number of plants in a bed of rocks, a stone patio, electrical connections throughout the yard, retaining walls, and an irrigation system. Everything still works wonderfully over a year later. Bonus- we had a fuse go out on our sprinkler system and Ben showed up within an hour of our text to fix it. I have had Happy Roots doing my landscape maintenance for almost a year. Before starting the maintenance, Ben (owner) did a great job creating a plan that covered our needs and fit into our budget. As time goes on, our (large) yard continues to look better and better.
