I have yet to meet Kay, the owner, although I have heard wonderful things. Kat is my regular stylist who is incredibly experienced. She busts out a beautiful cut based on a pinterest photo I bring in with ease. On the occasions I procrastinate on making an appointment, I've had a few of the other stylists who are great as well. Since I last reviewed Happy, I have been impressed over and over with the changes and additions to the salon. Let me first recommend Trish, the goddess of skin. I've had my brows waxed by Trish many times over the past year or so, but I just had my first facial with her and will no longer DREAD facials. Trish is gentle, relaxing and very practical when it comes to skin care. She doesn't use that death tool when doing extractions and if you've ever had a facial, you know what I'm talking about. She uses a technique that is not painful and doesn't irritate my skin like the typical facial. She's not the type to up-sell you with tons of products - she tries to find ways to use the products you have with little tweeks to optimize your skin care. She is very knowledgeable about skin and it's sometimes moody temperament and has given me tips like, "if you dry your skin out with acne wash, your skin will start to produce excess oil to compensate which will make you dry out more. Just use the acne wash once a day." Makes perfect sense. The addition of Mary to the team has added 5-stars of hair fabulousness. She recently gave me one of the best blow outs of my life and perfectly executed my best friend's dream look for her wedding. Kay is still reinventing the salon all the time and will always be my hair's boss. Kat is awesome and even manages to tame my husbands curly hair into a perfectly professional coif. I'm a dude. I like sports and beer and dogs and stuff like that. I don't consider myself a diva. I don't pamper myself except when it comes to getting my hair cut. It doesn't get much better than Happy Salon & Spa. Formerly Bradz Salon, Happy has some of the coolest, most qualified hair stylists in town (my personal favorite is Brittany Baranowski - she's pretty much a badass.) Walk in, get yourself a free drink of water or tea or coffee, sit down and enjoy the experience. Quick info for the lady customers: they do a great job on my wife's hair, both color and cut/styling. If you're a guy who likes a good scalp massage, a great cut and one of those hot towel/facial mask thingies, Happy is the place for you. If you're not into the hot towel/facial mask deal, you don't have to get it. The good folks at Happy use Aveda products, which are high quality as well as eco-friendly - a big plus in my book. The one drawback I can see for men is that the place is a salon and not a barber shop. You can't get a straight razor neck shave or play video games while you wait or drink a beer (I don't think they have beer, but you might ask when you go in). What you do get is a better cut than you'll get at the other hair places in town. Don't be too much of a man to give the ladies at Happy a shot. Your chances of disappointment are less than you'll have watching the Longhorns in 2010. Much less. read more

Unhappy about Happy Salon. My first visit for an eyebrow was because of a Belly campaign and I loved it! Chic location and attentive service (except for the girl at the front, it seemed like I was ruining her day somehow). After the wax, they even put eyebrow make up on to reduce the redness and fill in my brows. Awesome. My 2nd visit. Mediocre at best. Again the girl at the front desk seemed like I was keeping her from something. I made an appointment and still had to wait 10-15 min. No touchups afterward. Just a normal wax, but it wasn't bad. My 3rd visit. Terrible. AGAIN, the girl at the front seems like I'm interrupting her. I am a walk-in this time since i had to wait last time - even worse mistake. The front girl says that she has to check with technician, but never moves and plays on her iphone instead. I'm literally left for nearly 15 min before I'm informed that there's another Brow Wax in front of me...which I equate to another 15-20 min. If I had that information in the beginning, I wouldn't have wasted my original 15 minutes. My advice. Get a new front desk girl - I get it that you're hip and chic, but a nice personality goes a long way. Communicate internally so you don't piss off your customers - our time is valuable too. And overall, make the customer feel like you want us there. read more

This place makes you feel like you're in your cool beauty maven friend's just hanging out and making yourself pretty. The location downtown is very convenient, while the building itself is very quaint and cute. Everything is very clean and stylish and the girls that work there are super-friendly. The Aveda products they use make the whole place smell amazing and serene. I came to use a groupon for a facial and a haircut and was satisfied with both. It was my first time getting a facial, and I left feeling amazing. Not sure if I can keep doing them for $85 a pop but if I ever marry a millionaire, they will definitely see me more often. After the facial, I got quick scalp massage and shampoo, and then the cutting began. I just wanted a trim, so there wasn't much you could have messed up, but the end result was quite great-my hair seemed more sharp-looking than many other stylists I've gotten trims from. The stylist gave me advice for growing my hair out and products that could help with dryness, and then even gave me a free makeup touchup at the end! It was two hours of female bliss. The prices are bit higher than what I'm used to, but I definitely think that this place is worth it. When I went there on Saturday afternoon, there was almost no one else there, which was great for just relaxing and taking a break. read more

Is there a better salon in Austin? If there is, I haven't found it and I've tried. I stumbled into Happy several months ago needing a haircut and - after scalp massage and facial mask (included), left feeling, and looking, like a million bucks. I've been a regular ever since and have been thrilled on every occasion. Kay and her crew run a great shop with a welcoming ambience, terrific products, and quality work. I purchased a Groupon for a haircut, gloss and facial for a great price and I have been incredibly happy with all of my services! They were so great to let me split up the services into two separate visits (since I have a little one, hard to get away for long chunks of time). I intend on updating this post with the names of all the ladies that have helped me out there because I got a great haircut and gloss, and shortly after, decided to have them do my wedding hair and makeup. My updo was so beautiful it brought me to tears (I was quite stressed about the hair). Most recently, I (sadly) had my last treatment, it was an AWESOME facial by Tricia. It honestly felt like it went on for longer than an hour! She had a great demeanor (would chat when I'd start or be quiet when I would so I could really relax). She was very knowledgeable, gave a FANTASTIC facial massage and I thought was very thorough with extractions. I loved the aromatherapy and the Aveda products used. The spa itself is so cute, love the old house with wood floors. I'd love to give them my business every couple of months, but will probably book with their "new talent" for haircuts which are $30 and more in my price range and I "friended" them on Facebook because I was told they have facial specials from time to time. read more

Got to try out this place with an awesome groupon I purchased. there were pros and cons. I had a gloss treatment done and had them add a tint to it (free of charge) and that definitely turned out great. My hair has a nice sheen and slight color and is much softer!! really like that. haircut was next and unfortunately this was the only part I am unhappy with. I give my stylists small guidelines and let them go crazy. today my only guideline was that I am growing it out (from a super short pixie) and am trying to thus grow out the zillions of layers. I also told her that the back is doing a weird flippy thing and I'd like it to be trimmed up. So instead she left the length almost the same except ADDED a ton of layers the shortest at above the ear!!!!! Very very disappointed with this. In fact, I do not like the haircut so much I would have given this only 2 stars except for the salon's saving grace- Davina!! had an AMAZING facial with her and it was beyond my expectations!! I felt so relaxed and refreshed afterward that it made it worthwhile. Will definitely be planning to get back there just for a facial. Today is another great hair day! Brittany Baranowski has been coloring my hair for easily 5 years and cutting it for about 2. Her work is beautiful. I feel pretty and younger every time I see her. We're growing my curly hair out and she's helped me finally get it past my shoulders. And my color-- there's NO color line as beautiful as Aveda. Where do I begin? I called Happy 3 days before Christmas in hopes that by some miracle they could fit me to help fix what my previous stylist at another salon had screwed up on. I was leaving town the next day and needed it to be done pronto. They completely accommodated me within 2 hours of calling. I was matched up with Kat and I honestly couldn't be happier. After a haircut from a previous salon just days earlier I was super nervous to even go anywhere and just deal with bad hair cut. I'm growing out a pixie and as most women know it's a pain in the ass. My hair is the thing I like most about myself appearance wise. No one has ever done a better job on my hair than JENNIFER HAMZY. She's been my hair stylist since she was training at Aveda Institute. I was her first hair model. I followed her all the way to Happy Salon and Spa (which I also love, all the girls are SO nice there) The salon is very clean and organized and I love all the Aveda products! (Especially air control hair spray and wedding masque moisturizer) But seriously, Jennifer does great work. I will never go to anyone else again for the rest of my life! Jennifer genuinely cares about how your hair looks and how you feel about it. She's not pushy and doesn't try to tell you what you want. She's a great listener and pays attention to detail. So I get this email that says this Saturday only take $40 off any regularly priced service. I'm always looking for a new stylist and I used to come here when it was Bradz, so I thought I would give it a try. The search will continue. I'm guessing when they send out these emails it is to help bring in new customers or help encourage people who haven't been there in a while to come back. To me this means putting your best foot forward and making an effort to impress. To my stylist it meant I was never going to return so get me out of there in as little amount of time possible, with as little effort as possible. The website states you are supposed to get a scalp massage. None for me. I did get what my stylist called a hand "massage" which was basically her rubbing some lotion in my hands for 15 seconds. She didn't even wet my hair all the way before shampooing it. Rush, rush, rush. My haircut took about 3 mins, then she blew it out, then cut again, all the while telling me about the products. Felt more like a sales pitch then a relaxing hair cut. The haircut itself isn't bad. It isn't great either. I paid $25 for it and that is all it was worth. It certainly would not have been worth $65 and if I had paid regular price I would have been really pissed about it. As it was, well, I got an ok haircut and at an ok price. I guess I was expecting too much. Happy Salon did not make me very happy! read more

She even gave me a quick make up touch up to cover up any redness after, which was great as I was headed out to an event after. If you are looking for a bright natural blonde look she is the way to go. The tones are always perfect and I can go forever without getting it done because the way it grows out is so natural looking. I had an appt at noon on Oct 10, 2017. They called me at 11:30 to tell me there was major fire was going on and that 6th Street and West Lynn Streets were both closed. The message was give yourself extra time to get here. While on the phone I pulled up KXAN's website and saw the news. This was not a small fire (read expert from new below)! This was a huge, potentially dangerous fire (if the winds shifted) and there was certainly smoke billowing. The roads were closed and I did not want to add the traffic problems because well, my hair is just not that important to add to the police and fire department's problems. Anyhow I told the receptionist that I would prefer to reschedule. She asked me to hold on and then a supervisor got on the phone. The supervisor told me it was fine, just to come. When I persisted and said can I please just reschedule, she said we cannot get you in for another month or two (which I know is not true because when I call to make appts they can generally get me in within 3-7 days). Then the supervisor outright lied to me and said, the firetrucks are all pulling away right now. Just come in. See the timeline in the story below. There is NO way at 11:30 they were pulling away when just 5 minutes earlier they upgraded it to a 3 alarm fire. I feel it's disgraceful that a salon would put their customer's personal safety and add undue extra burdens on our civic workers all in the name of making a few extra bucks. This is not what I would expect from any salon, more less an Aveda Salon. For years I drove by this salon thinking I ought to try it one day. When my stylist at another salon cancelled on me last minute and I was in a bind for a wedding, I called Happy and they were able to get me in the next morning (they even had one appointment left same-day, but I was at work). I was slightly apprehensive because the stylist I was paired with was a "protege," I couldn't find any reviews on her...and I'm unintentionally really high maintenance when it comes to my hair. My hair is ungodly thick and unruly, so I'm often left disappointed after a haircut. Much to my surprise, my stylist, Allison, gave me the best haircut of my entire existence. She was very personable and easy to talk to, always kept me informed of what she was going to do with my hair next, and checked in to make sure that's what I envisioned. This is my favorite salon in Austin. I've been seeing Brittany for a few years now and she always helps me find exactly what I want in a hairstyle and delivers. The salon service is top notch too.
