I've been using home care services for my father provided by Visiting Angels for about a year now…read more I was very concerned about having anyone in my father's home but I had no choice. I had to go to work, among other responsibilities! After checking out providers and services, Visiting Angels was highly recommended. I knew I wanted to utilize a company with a good track record in this field. The Cleveland office of Visiting Angels has been in business for over 14 years. I did my own due diligence, personally speaking with several current and former clients. I also took an additional step to contact independent referral sources to see what companies they spoke highly of. They can never give you just one company, but the Cleveland office of Visiting Angels was on everyone's top 5 list of referrals. Every reference that I personally called, whether from Visiting Angels or from social workers and referral sources, had great comments about their experience and/or their reputation. Now, as I come up on a year of service, I can happily report that my experience and that of my father, paralleled all of the good references. Their staff members, or caregivers that have been with my father, have been very attentive, reliable and trustworthy. He has his 'angels', as he refers to them, around the clock! He is happy and pretty content. He likes how they take care of him, and I like how responsible they have been. He is 93 years old; a depression era, WWII vet survivor; he deserves the best! I was also surprised at how focused Visiting Angels has been at regularly checking in with me by phone to see how things are going! They even use an independent company that called me to do a survey about the quality of their workers and the responsiveness of their office. In total, I can highly recommend Visiting Angels to anyone needing caregiver services for their elderly loved one!

The nursing staff was responsive to his every need and checked on him frequently. The pastoral care he received was equally wonderful. Sister Margaret Mary, in particular, was so warm and loving toward him, and I was touched by her kindness. I'm sure she brought him much comfort! In addition, I was pleasantly surprised by how the staff took such good care of my family and I while we kept vigil in my dad's room. Between my brother, my mom and myself, we never left his side on the weekend he passed. The staff saw to it that I had a pillow and blanket to keep me comfortable while I slept there overnight, and they also brought me a phone charger when I needed it. One day, a staff member cooked my mom a grilled cheese sandwich just for her, because she knew she needed to eat. They promised us they would do anything they could for us, and they certainly did! When my dad passed away, we were all given a hug by our wonderful nurse, and given reassurance that he was no longer in pain. I could tell that one of the other nurses present was fighting back tears, which touched me, as well, knowing that I was not alone in my grief. I really just can't say enough good things about the wonderful people working there who make it their mission to provide comfort and care to their patients and their families. And the facility, itself, is beautiful, clean, and well-maintained. Nobody wants to have to bring their loved one to a hospice, but if you should find yourself looking for a facility to provide palliative care for your family member, you really couldn't ask for a place better than Holy Family.

This is not the case. A caregiver was sent to my home who had just quit a job as a hairdresser? She was not experienced at all with dealing with the physically challenged. She allowed my loved one to slip out of the wheel chair. The paramedics were called. If your caregiver reports off, the agency often times does not have a back up care giver. Many times you will need to make other arrangements with your work because no care giver is available. One week I had four report offs! It made going to work on time a very stressful situation. Depending on the circumstances, they often change your starting time due to their monthly employee meeting. Sometimes, no prior warning is given so you are frantic trying to find a replacement in order to not be late for work. Other times they will call a few days prior to the beginning of the week and say that they don't have anyone available to fill the hours that you need. This is an agency who staff a lot of care givers. How could they not have anyone to send? This happened numerous times with me. Most often, they do not send the same care giver. Your loved one can't build a relationship with their care giver because it generally is not the same person. I don't know who makes out their schedule?

The second day of care someone else was assigned. No call, no show again. The excuse was that she "had a court date." The third day was the same story, with the same aid (April) who then said she "didn't know where the house was." She was defensive, unprofessional, and unapologetic about leaving the patient alone each day. Each representative, INCLUDING Margaret Ogbuji, the director, was dismissive about the entire situation. Home health care is NOT the business for these negligent individuals. They made an already difficult situation extremely stressful.

I had a phone spat with the head of the office, Terri Jochum, and because she thought I was demeaning, she cancelled my father's contract that day. Her actions left him without any care as of that day. The case manager from the Veterans Administration tried to intervene to at least get them to allow his aide to stay on for a few days while the family could arrange for backup care and Terri refused. This is unethical and negligent and put my father who was recovering from a bout of pneumonia at severe risk. I was appalled that they would do this and furthermore that they could get away with doing this. While Terri has every right to be upset with me, by canceling him that day with no backup care is unconscionable.
