I come do laundry next door from this place Happy Wok and the chef/cook of this restaurant goes into the laundry place with his hair net, his apron and everything. That is cross contamination, unsanitary and they should not be wearing those things outside of the work area. Nor should they be smoking cigarrettes in those clothes. Very unwelcoming vibe when you enter, blocked off from dining room... maybe they should have a sign saying take out only & do not enter into the dining room?? Anyway I wanted to use my rodeo rewards there, but he was hesitant, not sure if he remembered how & grumbling that it's a lot of work & time to enter the # manually, but finally completed the transaction. I had ordered the tofu/veg/mushroom lunch special, soup not included w/ to go & choices were fried or steamed rice plus it cones w/ an eggroll - unfortunately that contained meat & the fried rice contained egg... The stir fried dish was very tasty & a generous amount for lunch !! Maybe he was just having a bad day but he just seemed annoyed & impatient... Wow Rodeo! I apologize in advance for this review. This beloved family spot was a "one and done" for me. Let's start with the great part: Mama Happy Wok has great personality and seemed delighted to take the call for my takeout lunch order at 1:30pm on a FriYAY. I didn't realize they closed at 2pm but I was 10 minutes away and knew I'd make it in time. Coo! Walking in the restaurant I began to second guess myself for placing a large order on my first visit to HW. Like other Yelpers have mentioned, customers are immediately greeted by a cordoned off dining room with space to pick up and go. The atmosphere is dark and cluttered with the stench of "vintageness" (yep... I made that up). Mama HW promptly appeared from the kitchen with a bright, smiley face reminding me the restaurant closes at 2pm. I appreciated her energy and that my food was ready. Paying with ApplePay was great but the trip through the maze of tables and behind the back counter to "Tap 'n Pay" meant a behind the scenes voyage that reminded me how conflicted I was about ordering here. Too late to turn back now. $95 and out the door I went. The bad part: as I opened the containers I knew immediately that my instinct was spot on. While thoughtfully and beautifully packed in foil-lined containers, the food reeked of old grease. I ordered shrimp chow fun, salt & pepper fish filets, chicken fried rice, green beans & beef and wor wonton soup. One bite of the shrimp chow fun and salt & pepper fish filet was all I could eat. The chow fun was all clumped together and lacked flavor while the shrimp were not fresh , flavorless and over cooked. The fish was fried in old grease that had the distinctive odor of other old food. The jalapeños were sliced too thick, undercooked and lacked any flavor as well. Enough said... When the longtime Rodeo resident with whom I was visiting said they'd never been to HW, it all made sense. I'm hoping this was a one off and others have a great experience 'cuz I'm rooting for this small family business. This just wasn't their best work (hopefully). read more

My first 4 star review needed an upgrade. This last visit, the Chow Mein was excellent, the Szechuan Chicken was great as usual and the portion consistent. Another plus is that they do not charge extra for Fried Rice or Chow Mein with their Lunch Special as other restaurants typically do. read more

Food and service is good. Quick turn around for food to be ready even tho they always say 20 minutes to be ready. It's normally ready in 10. Friendly family business with the parents and their son. We're trying to find good lunch specials around the area and this place popped up. They still don't allow interior dining which was a bummer to find out when we got there. The lady is super cute and friendly. The prices are cheaper than Dragon Terrace, but the food is not as good and you don't get a soup. It did come with a veggie egg roll which quickly got soggy. We both got a fried rice combo and we were surprised that the "fried rice" was simply white rice with scrambled egg mixed in. Disappointed. Other than that, the food was decent, a little greasier then most. Probably wouldn't come here again. Dragon Terrace is my go-to for an affordable lunch special with lots of more options. read more

I wanted good Chinese on NYE and this place was recommended. It could not have been a better recommendation. All the dishes we ordered reminded me of the best time I had them. We had combination Lo Mein that brought me back to childhood. We had sweet and sour pork that reminded me of the first time I had tasted it and wanted it to taste like that ever since. Got takeout lunch here for Yelp's Big Night in 2.0! This is a great little Mom & Pop style restaurant with authentic down-home Cantonese cooking! Conveniently located in the Safeway shopping center in the little town of Rodeo (off 80 before the Carquinez Bridge), hubby had been coming here for work lunches off and on for more than 25 years. The food has been consistently good all these years and they are fast and efficient too. We got: 1) Happy Family. A wonderful medley of chicken, beef, shrimp, broccoli, carrots, zucchini, mushrooms, bamboo shoots and onions stir fried in a mouthwatering brown sauce. There was an ample amount of all these ingredients and they didn't skimp on anything. We were impressed that they had taken the time to de-vein all the shrimp 2) Garlic eggplant. Traditional garlic eggplant in a pleasantly flavorful and piquant sauce with a hint of heat. There were nice pieces of tiny chopped garlic throughout. 3) Tomato Beef Chow Mein. A classic lunch item and one of hubby's favorites. Simply done with lots of chopped tomatoes, beef, onions, shredded cabbage and shredded carrots mixed into noodles with a pleasing tomato-ey sauce. It was very good with the perfect amount of sauce, noodle to beef & vegetable ratio, not just a bunch of noodles. They have the Covid routine down really well. There was hand sanitizer on the takeout table, a box of clean sanitized pens and a box for used pens. Everyone was wearing masks. And as mentioned earlier that hubby had been a customer for over 25 years, we fondly remember their Chinese Chicken Salad with killer peanut dressing and we would of ordered it, but they didn't have it that day. This is my favorite Asian spot. I've had everything on the menu. Never had a complaint, never a bad dish. The owner and family are very nice, very friendly and for over 5 years, they have suggested many tasty meals. The interior is decorated traditionally well. My third review of Happy Wok Since we are going through a COVID-19 Pandemic I would review Happy Wok and how they are doing through this crises. I have to say that Happy Wok is making it through the pandemic. Of course you can not dine in but take out surely became good for business. Here is how they are dealing with the pandemic...Truly know how to separate their pens. What that means is once somebody touches a pen they right away take it and have it clean...sanitize it. You don't want to touch a pen that been used. Most places are doing the clean pen and used ones. I do have to admit Randy, the guy that has been there surely does his best to make sure you are doing OK. Now to the food. I had the lunch special, Szechuan Chicken with Fried Rice. Having it to go was amazing. The proportion of my food was just like dining it. I was impress when I took my lunch home it was a great proportion. Happy Wok is one of my favorite restaurants. My family has been coming here for more than 30 years. Happy Wok never disappoints. The staff is very friendly we've known them for a long time and it always feels like home when were there. They seem to know a lot of people that come in and out the door. They are truly a hidden gem in the East Bay. One of my favorite dishes is the Drums of Heaven. It is definitely a must have. Other honorable mentions, the mushu pork in the pancake wraps. Their chow mein is very fulfilling. The Wor wonton soup is hella good too. Hits the spot when you're feeling under the weather Their lunch specials are the best deal. Especially for the drums of heaven. Each lunch special comes with a cup of soup, Fried rice, egg roll, and your choice of dish. usually its under $10 for the lunch special. they're only open for lunch 11-230 and reopen at 5pm- 830pm. Their location is in the Safeway plaza right off of Willow Ave. I don't mind driving less than a mile off the freeway to get some good food. I usually call ahead of time (20mins before) and pick up an order on the way home. read more

I hate saying this but there's really something wrong with this business. First of all, I have tried ordering to go many times. Often they don't bother to pick up the phone. Once I called, a young and rude male who sounds like their grandson said they ran out of several dishes and even basic things like chow fun about 11:00AM in the morning as soon as they opened. He claims someone ordered the last dish. Today, I called twice and the same rude grandson picked up the phone and said unhappily, "Happy Wok, what do you want?" He sounded like a bored person who really hated working there. When I asked what time they open for lunch for tomorrow, he hung up the phone. Very unprofessional bordering on obscene behavior. I'm just plain and simple. After being holed in and not going out, all I wanted was some fried rice. I don't recall seeing any little green scallions in it, but it had everything else that a fried rice should have: egg, peas, carrots, and protein. Plus, in the time of Covid-19, I can understand if perhaps they aren't getting shipments of ingredients in as regularly, so I will not dock any stars when they have been consistently good in the past. What happened to their customer service here? I love their food but on two occasions i try calling during their business hours for pick up and no one answers. Today i decided to just keep calling back to back and left on speaker to ring. Finally i got someone to answer. She says they ran out of drumsticks and as i was thinking of what else to get, she says "call back when you figure out what you want instead" then straight up hung up on me. All that calling just to get hung up on. Good customer service would be to suggest something else. And also not to hang up in someone's face. I didn't even bother to call back because who knows if I'm going to have to let it ring forever again just to get someone to pick up. I just seen other people's reviews that had the same problem. Stop hanging up on people - it's rude! And losing you business. And yes update your hours so people can know. I guess Happy Wok just don't care. Catch em if you can. read more

Love the portion, the price, and the food (i have only tried lunch specials). WARNING: 1) If order is placed over the phone, errors on orders may happen (it happened to me 3x). So be clear about your orders and emphasize special instructions. Or if you have a tray-sized order for an event, follow-up to ensure they have your order. (I ordered two trays of food for an event, and when I came to pick it up, the food wasn't ready because they didn't have it on the schedule, the guy who took the order didn't write it down!!!) 2) There "fried rice" is very simple because it's just rice and eggs--that's it. 3) If you want veggie chow mien, they will charge you extra for the veggie. FOOD: So far, I like all the specials I have ordered. My favorite is the bok choy with chinese black mushrooms. PARKING: Free parking & plenty. BATHROOM: never needed during all my visits. This family-owned business serves food that'd they've been perfecting over the years they've been open. I recommend their shrimp fried rice and Mongolian beef. Given that it is a family-owned business, things happen which may affect their customer service. However, it doesn't take away from the quality of their food. Renee, the owner's son, carries the restaurant on his back. His hard work goes unnoticed which makes the story behind this restaurant respectable and all business that comes their way is well-deserved.
