Let me just start by saying the food is not bad. It's hot and plentiful, but it's just Mid... The kung pao chicken had NO heat (Scoville heat) at all. The egg roll had almost no flavor and the cabbage inside of it was not seasoned even with basic salt and pepper, let alone garlic or onion. It was merely a sweet n sour sauce delivery system which is a shame. I can see going here if everywhere else were closed and you're jonesing for Chinese food, or if you're short on cash. Five star place for convenience. Not a gourmet restaurant, however it had the fried dry ribs we were craving. In my old hometown of Pinole when visiting family, friends or going to St Joseph church I must, must go to Rickshaw for at least one meal. When I do, I order the same freaking thing; Express deal with chow mein, fried rice, sweet sour pork and an egg roll. Same thing for like forever. Because it works so well together. The chow mein uses a udon thick noodles, the sweet sour pork is the BEST out there and the egg roll is super satisfying at finishing off this great combo. Dude I'm dead serious. After not coming here for a while, I decided to check it out for lunch today. I had half/half fried rice/chow mein with bbq pork and mushrooms chicken. It was $10 and some change. The portion was generous, smaller stomach can easily made it 2 meals or even 3! Bbq pork was good, lean, but the flavor was there. I especially liked the slightly burnt pieces bc it had the bbq aroma. The mushroom chicken tasted fresh too and seasoned well. The fried rice had the "wok" smokey fragrance, I thought it was really good. The chow mein was ok too, I just didn't really care for the super thick noodles they used bc it was too doughy for my liking. This time, I actually didn't feel too thirsty after my meal and I was very very full lol. Certainly a good spot for cheap and quick Chinese food. The restaurant is set up for take away only, no indoor/outdoor seating is set up. A red velvet rope keeps you from getting too close to the steam table. That said ... The food is pretty solid. It's the best Chinese "fast food" I've found in a while. The steam table is constantly being replenished, and you can see and hear someone constantly cooking in the kitchen. It was lunch rush on my first time there, so I watched to see what people ordered, mostly combos (fried rice, chow mein) with protein choices available from the steam table. I ordered rice plates, i.e., steamed rice and a choice of protein from the steam table. Mandarin chicken. Lightly breaded, not too sweet. Peking ribs. Loved nibbling on crispy coated bits of pork ribs. Sweet and sour pork. A tad sweet. Lots of sauce, pork carrots, bell pepper and onions. No pineapple chunks that I could discern. Broccoli beef. Thin sliced meat with lots of broccoli. Coated with a tasty brown sauce. String bean chicken. Another tasty and solid option. Plenty of green beans, chicken is well cooked. Two rice plates were less than $15 and more than enough food to put me into an afternoon food coma if I ate it all in one sitting! Things to keep in mind. They are a CASH ONLY business. There may be a line as there is only one person who fills your order until you have paid before moving on to the next customer. They offer more than what is on the steam table, so you can order other items. They also offer wonton soup, hot and sour soup, crab Rangoon, spring rolls, sesame balls. Not many selections, a lot of pork and greasy items but I picked some Mandarin Chicken, Kung Pao chicken and dude packed on some fried rice from 1692. We haven't been back for years and I remember how tender and delicious their black bean spareribs were so I was excited to get it for dinner. Unfortunately, the black bean spareribs were improperly cooked and was too tough to eat. I could barely chew it. It was a disappointment and we paid about 13 dollars for a large size. The portion is basically generous but I don't want a lot of improperly cooked tough meat. The green beans and chicken was cooked well and pretty tasty. We had a medium size for about 7 dollars. Again, portion size here is reasonable. I don't think I will be coming back. I will return to Panda Express when I want cheap Chinese food. My husband said he will give it more chances. read more

I have been going to Rickshaw Chinese food for many years. It's close to home and convenient. It is a very small place and would not recommend dining in. It's my go to Take-Out and rush rush place. If you're hungry and in a rush, this is the place to be. Customer service- It's cash only but the ladies there provide fast service and flexibility on your order. Also, they are not stingy at all. They always fill up the Kari-out containers. Food- The food is okay. I pretty much tried every items in the menu. But my favorite is the Pork Short-ribs sautéed in black bean sauce. It's the best item in Rickshaw. The meat is tender and the sauce is seasoned perfectly. A must get item.. The most amazing is that even after all these years, this item still taste the same. That's an unbelievable consistency! For that, you earned a 4-Stars! Bravo! Finally, I'll keep going here just to support the local businesses and convenience. Best Chinese food in the Bay Area! I've been going to this place since I was 5 years old and 30 years later it's still serving the very best most unique Chinese food in California! Their sweet and sour sauce pork is by far the best I've ever had, it's not breaded like most sweet and sour pork is but that's what makes this one so special! The sweet and sour sauce they make is also the best I've ever tasted! You can't go wrong with anything here! Overall great experience I got a 2 Entree Combo. With Sweet and Sour Pork , Chow Mein , mushroom chicken , and 2 chicken Egg Rolls . My mom, however, got a small side of Lemon Chicken ! Would be back and recommend for a nice take out meal! No chairs no tables in the restaurant. Take out only ! No bills over $20 and no credit / debit cards ! It was only $17 for all this food by the way. We're overall really happy with our food! I didn't care for the Sweet and Sour Pork too much but that's just my preference. Just a little too tough for my liking. On that note I gave it to my sister and baby daddy who loves all types of meat and they loved it ! So it just depends! I'm more picky so I didn't like it. They aren't hard to please and they liked it ! So try it out for yourself! The Chow Mein was delicious have no complaints on it whatsoever as well as the mushroom chicken! Me and my mom really liked the mushroom chicken the best and would come back here to get it ! My mom said the Lemon Chicken was good as well. The Egg Rolls were okay I would like veggie rolls better since there's no hard things in meat if there's only vegetables in it lol. I almost don't want to write this review. Rickshaw has been my go to spot for something that I personally love and whenever I bring this item to an event it gets raves from anyone that tries it. They always ask where I got it and I never tell cause it's MY secret. Well I was reading the reviews and noticed a dip in the level of stars so I've decided to spill the beans so my secret spot does not go down. Rickshaw restaurant does one thing well, does one thing great. Whenever I go I only get one item and I get lots of it. Go here if you Love char siu (BBQ Pork) I think it's one of the best in the bay! I have found my little gem! This place is rocking! I love hole in the wall places with good food and great prices. Cash only so don't forget to get that cash out! The prices are so spot on here and the food tastes so fresh. The woman greeting us and taking our order was so kind, sweet, and offered us a menu to take home since we are new to the area. The potstickers were juicy and packed with pork! The Peking ribs are so scrumptious and that sauce is life. The chow mein is very tasty and I loved the noodles! The mandarin chicken was crispy, juicy, and I loved the flavor of the sauce not too sweet with a little heat. Their house chili oil is also killer. The portions are huge for the price! Seriously so excited about this place. The only downside is they are only open until 8:00pm. I know I'm gonna have a craving one night at like 10:00pm and be sad that they are closed. Worth it!
