I think the "3-star" Yelp average is correct for this place. On a Saturday evening, I drove up to Pinole just to try the Hung Tao Yee Won Ton Soup at China House. It was near 5pm, and the dining room was empty. They said most of the orders were for takeout and delivery. So I was seated right away, and they offered me hot tea. So I ordered the Hung Tao Yee Won Ton Soup, and also "Salt 'n Pepper Prawns" as listed under House Specialties on their menu. For $15.95, it's a huge bowl of soup. It could be enough for 2-3 people. Hung Tao Yee Won Ton Soup is fried won ton in thicken egg drop soup. I added pepper and a splash of soy sauce, and it was perfect. Grade (4/5). However, the Salt 'n Pepper Prawns were not perfect. They were served deep fried, with jalapeño pepper slices. I asked for "in-shell." So they were deep fried with the shell still on. That usually means they'll have more flavor. These prawns were mushy and had a slightly fishy aftertaste. This suggests that they were frozen and not fresh. China House didn't season them enough to mask the off-taste. Other restaurants add a coarse salt and maybe a dipping sauce. The batter coating tasted fine, but the prawn itself wasn't good. Grade (2/5). Service was prompt and attentive. Not bad for a quick Chinese food fix reasonably priced. Location has ample parking and has a loyal frequent diners. Hot and Sour Soup is a good starter, but I prefer a bit more heat. The fried appetizer sampler is something I would skip. The BBQ Pork Chow Fun was full of flavor and the Salty Fish Fried Rice was fragrant. The clay pot was a miss. I was hoping they would actually cook the food in the clay pot for that taste, but it appears the food was cooked and served in a clay pot. Never again will we come to this place. They've always been a bit unfriendly, but this visit was by far the worst. I've been bringing my elderly Asian neighbors here for years because they speak the language and have always enjoyed the food. We went last night, and even though the restaurant was nearly empty, the staff was completely unaccommodating and extremely rude. My neighbor was genuinely upset and kept wondering why they were treating him that way. We've always ordered plenty of food and left generous tips, so being treated so poorly was very disappointing. From now on, we'll be going to Uncle Chung's, where the staff is always welcoming and kind. Me and the wife had a few minutes before we had to grab the kiddo from a party and decided to try out the China House. This was about 8pm and we walked in and was seated right away and tea was brought out. After looking through the menu a bit we settled on the "B" family dinner. They did allow us to substitute a dish for an additional fee. We had the sizzling soup, garlic chicken, Mongolian Beef and chicken fried rice. The portions were large and the food was good. Haven't been here in a while, got some takeout, the lunch special sweet & sour chicken and some egg rolls. My food was ready after I order and the staff there are friendly and nice. I was in the area and was craving salt and pepper fish. Stumbled upon China House and had to check it out. The place was clean and had fast service! I got to enjoy complementary tea and hot and sour soup. I also got beef chow fun and steamed rice. The fish was good, flavor was great. The batter was different than I had before, think fish and chips, but was very crunchy. The beef chow fun was also good, but lacked a bit of salt. The rice was not good, and had drier clumps throughout. For the extra expense of steamed rice and the quality it arrived in, not worth it. Ok, I've been coming here a few years now, and as much as I want more candied walnuts on the honey walnut shrimp, I do believe that China House is now my go-to place for honey walnut shrimp. They aren't too mayo-y like other places, decent size shrimp and good portion. However they ARE pretty pricey especially if you order through door dash. If you want to bump up the flavor of the soup, I suggest adding the chili sauce. We don't order any drinks because they always give us (black?) tea. I will confess I did not like the current location off San Pablo Ave. It took over an old sandwich shop. I will say that I have that this location is convenience for me because I could park in the lot or on the side street in front of the restaurant. The inside of China House is big compare to Hunan Villa or the old location in Pinole Valley. Two TVs mounted on the wall to watch news or sports. It surely can be a packed inside during the holiday season. The service is good. I have not gotten bad service while I was eating here or picking up my order. The guy that is behind the counter is nice. As of late when I am eating here for lunch I been having Mixed Vegetable with Chicken. The proportion of my meal isn't bad. I went in last week for the first time in about a year, I ordered Salted Fish and the price was 19.50!! When the old guy showed me, I had to look in the bag to see what else I ordered lol. I said WOW!! When did the price go up that high, he said you must haven't been here in a while. I said nope and this might be my last time. The food was better, perhaps because they were busier back then. They had a fish tank with those fat short goldfish in it that wobble when they swim. New location is in the location where C&C Deli used to be. I wish C&C Deli was still open. But you know, China House runs a square deal, they serve you enough so that you get full. It's not spectacular, sometimes it's good. The family who runs it speaks Cantonese. They are your typical Cantonese type of restaurant staff, they aren't overly animated, they are cool and relaxed. Order well and you might get them talking. I went here last weekend with my neighbor. To be honest, I did not put a high expectation coming here as I thought the food would just be so so. I ordered the mandarin fried chicken (thanks to the enticing photo on Yelp), mixed vegetable with beef, and hung tao yee won ton (also thanks to the photo on yelp). My bill came out less than 30 bucks so it felt really cheap for 3 dishes! The fried chicken was really good! They came as all wing pieces (I love wings!) And the sauce was reminiscent of korean yeongyum sauce but with no spiciness. What a Finger licking sticky goodness the wings were! And for 10.95 you got 10 pieces, what a steal! The hung Tao yee won ton was basically fried won ton in egg drop soup and there were pieces of bbq in the soup too. It was light, comfort food, I really really liked it even though I never had such a dish before. The beef with veggie was standard, good portion and they didn't skim on the beef. It was saucy but light (not too much soy sauce) but it was a bit too garlicky. I would ask for lighter in garlic next time. I liked that I didn't feel greasy after eating their food and not thirsty as they were flavorful but perhaps they didn't put (a lot of) msg. I am somewhat conflicted about this review. I drove past this place for 15 years on the way to work but had never eaten there. I wanted Chinese but I also wanted to get out of Vallejo. I wanted an old-school sit-down Chinese place where I could sit down and be waited on so I thought I would give it a shot. We had the family dinner for two which included the fares in the attached photos plus wonton soup and egg roll and fried won tons. There is no family personal dinner option like many restaurants so options are very limited or going ala carte. The servings of the entrees were large but not exceptional (kind of mediocre). My conflict comes with the value of the meal. The family meals were more than 25 dollars each,. With the added Beef Chow Fun Entree and taxes the meal ran 72 dollars. The pork fried rice had next to no pork in it. I understand the post-Covid world and there was only one waitress. The food was delivered quickly and she did the soup serving thing but after that, she pretty much disappeared. I only tipped 8 bucks because I was taken aback by how much the meal cost versus what I have been paying recently at other Asian restaurants. China House is a restaurant that I've been going to for the past 10 or more years. The ambiance is of a typically homey Chinese Restaurant and so are the employees. Nowadays I rarely ever go there to sit down for a meal since I get home later in the evening, though whenever I order to-go they are always very prompt at making my order by the time I arrive to pickup on the way home. When craving soup I always order their House Special Noodle Soup. I also like their Salted Fish And Chicken Fried Rice and my kid's love their Salt And Pepper Fried Fish Filet. But I got curious enough to finally stop and check this place out, I've seen it so many times. We decided to order takeout and literally only 15 minutes later our food was ready. OMG the food is the star of the show. I don't care what anyone else says about the spot except when they talk about the food. In the short time we were there, so many people came in to order. Definitely a hot takeout spot. We got Mongolian beef, chicken fried rice and sweet & sour chicken and crispy spring rolls. Smelled amazing and tasted even better. A win in my book. There's a parking lot on the side and in the back, but you can also park on the street. It's roomy inside and you just have to show proof of vaccination to dine in. We sat down for a few to check out their menu. We were so engrossed with so many appealing items on their menu that we completely overlooked the fact a line (to order for take out, to pick up phoned in orders or to be seated) had formed and kept getting longer and longer. By the time we made up our minds, there were at least 6 sets of people ahead of us. I didn't mind this at all. This just goes to show how popular they are. Hubbers and I decided on four things: wor wonton soup (small - for 2), mandarin crispy duck special, salted fish and chicken fried rice and black bean sauce with fish fillet. We were told it would be around 20 minutes as they are extremely busy. It's a no-nonsense, no frills kinda place, but they are certainly popular. The restaurant only had maybe 2 or 3 tables (for 4 to six people) open during our wait. Customers coming in was pretty much non-stop during our wait. Less than 20 minutes and we had our food. Home isn't too far, so the food stayed hot. WOR WONTON SOUP: Delicious at first sip and bite. Perfect seasoning. They didn't skimp on the wontons or the shrimp. Highly recommending. SALTED FISH AND CHICKEN FRIED RICE: I could have done with the peas and carrots. I know, it's a personal preference, but I feel peas and carrots are nothing but empty fillers. It also fell short with the salted fish part. It was okay, at best. I've had better. BLACK BEAN SAUCE WITH FISH FILLET: Veggies were commensurate with the amount of fish. Delicious. Black bean sauce was seasoned well. Above average. MANDARIN CRISPY DUCK SPECIAL: Hubbers and I agreed they were charging kinda low for a duck dish ($14.50 for half) so we just had to try it. We also both decided this is gonna be a hard pass on the next visit. It was fried a bit too long so not only were some parts dry, others were too hard to bite. SKIP. FOOD: 4. I used to eat here a lot back at their old location, but I hadn't been in a while since moving to Hayward. I do remember coming by back during the pandemic and ordering Salt and Pepper Fish, but it wasn't on their menu. They were nice enough to make it for me since they had all the ingredients, so very nice of them. Recently enjoyed their Chicken Salted Fish and Tofu Clay Pot as well as their Tomato Beef to go. Our last weekday lunch was a full house, but China House is bright, uncluttered and tables are spaced nicely. Last night's dinner was less crowded. Although specializing in "Mandarin and Szechuan", some of China House's better dishes are Cantonese, such as: Whether lunch or dinner, we always order Hung Tao Yee Foo Won Ton, basically deep fried won ton in a thickened egg drop soup with minced Virginia ham and cilantro. A double order is a good deal and comes in a huge serving bowl. The won ton soup is very good but not the best I've had in the area. Still, the restaurant is known for this soup so give it a try. A San Francisco regional dish, you probably will not find it outside the Bay Area and I've never seen it on the East Coast. The Roast Duck Op Gung Yee Foo Wonton Soup is good too, but heavier, and I prefer the original version. The spicy beef chow fun is ok but nothing special. The portions are big. Unfortunately, the only whole fish offered is flounder. No whole bass in a Chinese restaurant? Still, if you try the flounder, simply steamed Cantonese style with green onions and ginger is the best way to taste the fish. Many of their clay pot dishes are tasty and flavorful. My father likes the Chicken with Salted Fish and Tofu clay pot but mentioned it needs pieces of 'hom yee' or salted fish in it, not just the taste. The Black Mushrooms with Chinese Greens dish is succulent and comes with a generous portion of delicious and large Chinese mushrooms. Service is typical of many Chinese restaurants. Perfunctory and no nonsense. If we remember, we request "No MSG." I don't understand why in today's more health conscious world, many Chinese restaurants still think it's a good thing rather than making dishes more fresh and flavorful using natural ingredients. read more
