I'm giving this place three stars (which means I would go there again, but only if someone else wanted to go there). This place has pretty standard Americanized Chinese food: Wings - which everyone else has mentioned already - solid Fried Rice - good Mu-shu (I forgot which meat we got, but this usually just tastes like the hoisin sauce you slather on to the pancake) - solid Twice Cooked Pork - I don't know what the heck this was, but it was not twice cooked pork. I've had happy wok about once or twice before, but this time was different. I guess it's because I ordered it myself this time. I didn't really know how to order because I didn't really understand their menu because I didn't see a whole menu on here, as I ordered by seeing two pictures on yelp haha. I orders Szechuan beef w/ fried rice (aka rice with egg fried together) and Chicken chow mein ala carte. In total it was $15.37 for both and the beef dish came with a egg roll. The food is really good, a little bland but really good. Just the service was quite lagging. I walked in and there were fire men in there, I assume the fire Marshal and it was a little nerve racking to here what they had to say to the man behind the counter while I was there. I waited about 30 min in total since I called, so I call 2:25, and left the restaurant around 2:55. There was one table that was occupied while I got there, but the man kept walking back and forth with his head down not looking at anyone nor smiling. C'mon, customer service 101. The "drums of heaven were amazing!" The chicken had a slight spice to it which I like. The serving size was pretty generous. I also tried their eggplant which was delicious too. I like that they offer lunch specials from 11am to 3pm M-F. Service was pleasant. I'd order from them again. read more

I would have given it a four only because each time I put in a phone order the same lady answers and is always in a hurry. After my second food order she always would say something like " ok two orders and it will be ready in" until I'll say No I have more. I actually told her you seem like you're rushing me. This happened three times. Food wise it's very good. Just a little bit of attitude adjustment. read more

Finally good Chinese close to me. Willow was bad so I had to go all the way to Richmond for good stuff. Glad I found this little gem.

The name of this restaurant and how I feel about it are in complete agreement. HAPPY! It's so challenging to find good Chinese food, given that there are so many styles out there. Chinese cuisine is as vast as China itself. Most of what we get here in the Bay Area tends to be Mandarin-Szechuan, and this is a similar situation. This place is located in the Safeway shopping center, in Rodeo. I have lived in Hercules(adjacent) for 11 years, and until now I had not been. What a mistake I waited so long. I have been here, at least 4 times in the past 4 weeks. It's an obsession to try most of the menu. Here are some of the highlights: Hot and Sour Soup-one of the best I have ever had, and I *love* Hot and Sour soup. Honey Walnut Shrimp, a true version of these, with actual honey drizzled over the lightly fried shrimp. Mushrooms with Chinese Greens in black bean sauce Combination Chow Mein Drumsticks from Heaven, a wonderful "lollipop" of drumstick fried to perfection and drizzled with a sweet and spicy glaze. OMG. Sauteed Green beans in garlic sauce eggplant in spicy garlic sauce needless to say, this is a limited list, because we have been satisfied with everything. The portions are wonderful. Prices are really fair, and the food is cooked fresh to order. We have not ordered to-go as of yet, but a menu has been procured to do so :-) They are open 6 days a week, (closed on Sundays), serve chinese beer( big Tsing Tao fan here), and The Mom and Son team could not be nicer or more accommodating. Ownership must of changed because I went a few days Sept 5 and it was the worst Chinese food I've ever had. I literally threw it away because it was so bad. It was bland and unauthentic. I am Happy to say that this place walks the Wok. Cringeworthy yet completely accurate puns aside, Happy Wok is one of my all time favorite restaurants ever. Drained from working a 9-5 job that you're not quite sure how you ended up at after frantically applying to 10,000 jobs in fear of a jobless post-grad life? Happy Wok. Need to take a break from contemplating your third existential crisis of the week? Happy Wok. In need of comfort because your senpai won't notice you? Happy Wok. Last time I ordered vegetable fried rice it tasted fresh and so delicious ! I couldn't wait to order again! I was so disappointed in the vegetable fried rice and orange chicken :( It tasted old as if it was left over from lunch a few days ago! This was a dinner I was excited for and was left hungry and unhappy! I'm trying to support small business but come on, step it up! Ate here recently and was pleasantly surprised on how tasty the food was. We were greeted and spoke with the owner of the restaurant which was very nice. I am really particular about Chinese. I was blessed and I mean blessed to grow up in a town with only a single Szechuan place and they were the best people. Happy Wok reminds me of that experience. Really good quality, which is my general issue with Chinese food in the area. The woman took a genuine interest in my wife's sickness and gave us oolong tea to help her feel better. In addition when I ordered spicy, they didn't just grow in more chili's like cheap places will but mixed in more spices to really make the flavor bold. Very happy I found Happy Wok. read more

A cute, little, hole-in-the-wall joint that serves yummy Hunan-style Chinese cuisine. Great for take out since the seating is pretty limited and it can get hectic during lunch (when people go on their lunch breaks during the weekdays) and weekends when many families go. The owner is a very sweet, petite lady, and once you get to know her, she'll make you feel like part of the family. My personal favorites are the "drums of heaven" chicken drumsticks. Very tangy and tasty, with the right amount of spice to it. The honey walnut prawns are always a classic. I'm also a fan of their chow fun (beef version) I have been a devout fan for years, and this is my family's go-to Chinese takeout place whenever we have an immediate hankering for Hunan style cooking. *fyi, they do not accept credit cards or checks. read more

I come here for lunch. I like combination chow mein cuz its not greasy like at other places. It comes with big chunks of chicken, beef and shrimp. At lunch, the plate also comes with a side of fried rice, soup and an egg roll. The chicken drumlettes are good too. I ordered the Szechuan beef and the chicken lo mein. Unfortunately they don't have any half or smaller sizes, so it was a ton of food. You really get your moneys worth, since most entrees are under 10 bucks. The beef was breaded but it wasn't really crispy (which I happen to like it slightly soggy, but I think most people would be put off). The flavor was on point though, and it tasted fresh - not so heavy and overwhelming like most Chinese to go places. I'd like to emphasize again how huge the portions are - honestly could've split it between 2-3 people and still have leftovers. The noodles however, completely lacked any texture and didn't have much flavor or seasoning. It was fine, but you could probably get the same quality from your run of the mill Asian fast food places. I only ordered pick up, I have yet to dine in. The restaurant itself is a little dingy and small, but not terrible for Rodeo. The old lady who was working there was super nice and it was all ready in like 15 minutes. Overall, good but nothing awe inspiring. Definitely will try other items on the menu. read more

Hands down the best Chinese food in the area! Don't let the store front or location fool you because the food is the best Chinese food! It's definitely a family owned business and the family is super sweet. The veggie fried and the sesame chicken is a must get!! I'm sure no matter what you order here you will be satisfied with their fresh ingredients and large portions!! The dining area is a little small but I've noticed that a lot of people order to go. I went there today and was pleasantly surprised. My order only took only five minutes. I got the broccoli beef. And when I got to my destination to eat my meal, it was absolutely delicious! I sit in the lobby for about 10 minutes and finally someone comes out and says were closed! What in the world? So why is your door opens and why are your hours not posted? I've been going to the same dentist in rodeo for over 30 years and happy wok is in the same strip mall area as my dentist. One day decided to try happy wok after my dentist appointment and ordered the drums of heaven to go. I believe the drumettes came with 8 pieces. The chicken was very good and tasty. The sauce that came with the chicken was good, lots of flavor. Chicken was still crisp with the sauce. I'll only come here and order if I made too much rice and need something to eat it with and the drums of heaven is great with just rice alone. read more

Okay, I', from a Rodeo. So, as a towney I better know where the good food is at. LOL. I have been coming to Happy wok since I was a toddler. Most of the time we usually order take out but I have dinned in on occasion, not often but at least a hand full of times over the years. The restaurant is not big. So, don't be expecting a dinning hall amount of space. It's really cute they have little oriental decorations up every where , lanterns & really big fish tank with cute fish & fancy coral & Sea anemones.It is not super fancy it is just sprinkled with asian flare & oriental touches that make this place absolutely adorable. My favorite dish here is there mu shu pork& pancakes. The pancakes are like deliciously light weight tortillas. The sauce is awesomely tangy & the meat is really good. I love this dish its like asian burito's. You should defiantly give a try. Another one of my favorites from here is the deep fried shrimp, its always cooked to perfection , crispy & melts in your mouth in each bite. I could order a large order of these & be happy with just that. Why in the 5 years we've previously lived in Rodeo-Hercules we've haven't eaten here (that I could recall) and we come here today out of the blue (in between a wedding from St Pat's and the reception later in the evening) and we find this little gem of a place per the hubby's suggestion. Had the sweet and sour shrimp lunch and they didn't skimp on the shrimp and it was pretty good! Came with your choice of rice, a small soup and veggie egg roll. Last nights dinner: Mongolian beef, won ton soup, salt and pepper shrimp, combination fried rice Fast service, reasonable price, decent portion sizes. Mongolian beef was the spiciest I've ever had. And it's our go-to beef dish when ordering Chinese. It was tasty but I definitely had to sip my drink more often and could not give any to the kids. Hubby loved it though. Won ton soup: seriously lacking in flavor. Both the broth and the won tons were disappointing. I will not reorder in the future. Combo fried rice: pretty tasty! Plump shrimp used but no bbq pork ... Needed soy sauce added. Salt and pepper shrimp: the best dish of the night. Batter was a bit thick but holy yum! Spicy and salty and crunchy and delicious. read more

The interior is cute and relaxed, they're very nice people and the food is really good! Definitely better quality and taste compared to other Chinese restaurants, it's really unique and has a homemade touch to it. I like to order the almond chicken for lunch. The portion is generous with big almond halves, unlike the tiny slivers you get at other places.
