Came to Tyler after about 10 years away and was in the mood for some fish. Looked on yelp and was thinking this place has pretty high reviews so why not. Got the catfish which comes with two sides. Got boudin and red beans and rice. It was nothing short of amazing. The catfish was just what the doctor order and then some. Perfectly cooked and tasting like my mama made it. Also tried the Creole potatoes (home fries) they had a little bit of spice which I love and were cooked perfectly as well. We had a pretty good meal here recently, the food was really very good other than the bread pudding which was disappointing after all the reviews. We sat for a good ten minutes before anyone came to our table after we were seated & even then it wasn't our waitress. Another waiter working in the same area came to ask if our drink orders had been taken or if anyone had even come over & when we said no he took our drink orders & went to put them in. After he delivered our drinks & had been gone another five minutes the lady who was suppose to be our waitress came over & started grilling us on who had taken our drink orders, demanding that my husband point the guy out, unprofessional was an understatement. Her performance throughout the meal did not improve & we witnessed the same poor service at her other tables surrounding us. We ordered one meal to share with chicken, fish & shrimp plus fried okra, red beans & rice & fries. The food was very good but then we decided to splurge on the bread pudding only to have it come out burnt. Not toasted as is usually the case but so burned on top that the top half was inedible & tasted horrible. I actually like things a little crispier & toasted than most people & it was far too much for even me. All in all we would probably eat here again but NEVER sit in the same waitresses section & I feel like a good server wouldn't have even brought out such burned food to begin with. read more

New fish place opened by the Gugar family of Posado's & Mercado's chain. Atmosphere is colorful and cheerful, nautical with Cajun zydeco music playing. For a place that's only been open a few days, they got us in pretty quickly, food served promptly. We experimented so I got the Smoked Fish Dip appetizer. It was ok, just not my thing but that's my issue, not theirs'. We split the large Fried Shrimp platter. Had 9 fried shrimp, fries, 3 hush puppies and one side. It was delicious, every bite. I like that they had a shaker of "house seasoning'. I sprinkled it on my fries. We also ordered dessert - the bread pudding - it was a HUGE slab of bread with the sauce and a scoop of ice cream, Big enough for 3, but the 2 of us polished it off. I will definitely go back, but not often - and this is the reason I am not giving it 5 stars - it's overpriced. Even more than Posados is, but definitely worth an occasional return trip. read more

The fried oysters were slightly undercooked, however the breading and flavor was good. The catfish was OK, the breading not as good. As a cajun from the heart of Mamou Louisiana I will tell you the gumbo here is not authentic and the reaux isn't great, that being said the gumbo is much more tolerable than any other Texas place I've been too. The reaux in the gumbo was overseasoned and lacked that reaux flavor that something like Savoies has for example. While this place is definitely not authentic cajun, its "Ok". With some work on their actual cooking process this place could be way better read more

I've been coming to Tyler for work for almost 10 years, eating out every meal. I ate here for the first time last night and it is easily in the top 5 meals I have had here. Big shrimp, full size oysters, cheese grits, boudin, beer, and zydeco music. Flavor, texture, and quality of the seafood I tried was great. Does Red Lobster qualify as a fish house? So was excited to have a new fish place in Tyler. Tried it last night. We were seated quickly, served quickly. Waiter was very friendly and helpful, though still learning the ropes. That's okay, the restaurant is new. Overwhelmed with employees asking "Is everything okay?" but as I said, it's new. The test will be 6 months from now when they reduce staff to profitable levels. Also, why not put silverware on the table when the guests are seated instead of making them ask after the appetizer is served? This is not really a fish house, so don't be confused by the name. Atmosphere is supposedly Cajun. Obviously they have watched multiple episodes of "Swamp People". They have probably even driven through Lafayette on I-10. But Happy's is to Cajun as Posado's is to Mexican or Red Lobster is to seafood shack. It would be great to have an actual Cajun restaurant in Tyler, but there may not be a market here for authentic anything except barbecue (I'm NOT complaining about the barbecue! If you can only have one authentic cuisine in a town, you can't beat barbecue!). To the lady who said there is nothing else like it in Tyler, ahhh, what about the recently deceased Fat Catz or the still alive Razzoo's? But as a great restaurant had engraved on their fireplace mantle, "It's the food that counts." So about the food: We had the fried green tomatoes served with a dip as an appetizer. Done well, but fried green tomatoes are not dippable unless they are way overcooked. And remember, no forks, and no appetizer plates, so a little messy to eat. Wife had fried shrimp with French fries and cole slaw. The shrimp were okay but large and a bit overcooked. Would have been much better if butterflied then fried. Cole slaw was inedible. Cole slaw is cheap to prepare so good restaurants make sure that the cole slaw is good so that patrons are sated at low cost. I had fried crawfish with French fries and dirty rice. Crawfish was slightly overcooked but not bad. The dirty rice was very good. Not as good as Mama Trochesset's but very good and I'll give you 2 stars for that alone. About the French fries: I know you use French fries to bulk up the plate, which is not uncommon and is therefore excusable. Every dish is served with French fries, which makes it very Cajun because potatoes grow very well in the wetlands of south Louisiana, right? WRONG! RICE is the starch that is served with every Cajun meal in every Cajun household! Watch "Swamp People" a few more times or get off the interstate in Lafayette. But, if you are going to serve French fries with every meal, at least cancel your order with Sysco for frozen fries and actually prepare some fresh fries that are better than what I buy from the freezer case at Walmart. This would have been an okay dinner if not for the price. Way overpriced. Cajun food is basic comfort food and uses inexpensive ingredients. This place takes the "Po" out of po'boy. $14.95 for a crawfish po'boy? Razzoo's online menu has that for $8.99. Red beans and rice with Andouille for $12.95? And on Monday? I fix red beans at home frequently, I'd bet mine are better than theirs, and I can tell you that $12.95 is way overpriced. My crawfish dinner was $14.95 which was only about $3 overpriced, as was my wife's shrimp dinner. I seriously suggest you look at Razzoo's menu prices, or Fat Catz (okay, bad reference, but still). Our meal would have been overpriced had it been all excellent food, but certainly was overpriced for the quality we received. I hope this place does well, but they will have to lower the prices and improve the quality for that to happen. Otherwise, this will go the way of Dwayne's (which had good food for a while after it opened) and the Italian restaurant that was last in this location. read more

Very nice atmosphere. Clean bathrooms. Onion rings were delicious. This might have been a bad night because we saw some people leave after receiving all of their food. Don't know why and didn't ask. My food was delicious and pretty fast to be delivered. Fried catfish was tasty and reasonably priced. As a couple of reviewers have pointed out, the Fish and Chips here are a huge disappointment. The waitress explained they use "vietnamese" catfish as the white fish in the order. Sorry, catfish does not meet the standard definition of white fish and even if it did, this "vietnamese" fish had a rancid aftertaste. Awful stuff. The manager explained that he "has never had a problem with the fish". He may not. But some of his customers apparently do; myself included. Service was good. And I've had a couple of good meals here before. But not tonight. read more

I grew up in Lake Dallas, TX, and there was a small fish place called the Duck Inn that had the most amazing fried fish. The place eventually changed owners and the quality went downhill fast. Our family has been looking for that quality fried fish ever since (20 yrs). Happy's was it. The catfish was great, filets and strips. They had whole fried fish too, which is rare, and I didn't have a single bite of mudcat. It was all either blue or channel. Hush puppies were good too, and the price was fair. I have been going to Happy's since they opened and found the food to be extraordinary. Always more than one could eat. However, yesterday, I took my boss there for lunch. She questioned the waitress if she could purchase one rib to go with her Shrimp Etoufee'. She was told no!! You would think that a place wanting to make money would allow for someone to purchase on rib. I was also disappointed in the plate that I received. I ordered from the lunch menu Shrimp and Oysters. Little did I know that it was two shrimp and two oysters, hardly enough to satisfy a lunch appetite. Again the waitress did not bother to come and ask if we needed anything until we were through eating. I know this all sounds a little cheesy, but, I pay not only for food, but, also for service. We were a party of ten. My food arrived cold and the hush puppies were burnt. When I told the server, she took my plate away, then came back. The plate had apparently been stuck in a microwave for a few seconds, so was warm in one place, but still cold in the other and it still had the burnt hush puppies on it. The manager eventually came by and his response was to ask if I wanted a different plate of food. Since everyone else was finished by then, I said humorously, no, I'm 'over' that dish. He snatched the plate away with a sour look on his face, and we never saw him again. I was charged for the inedible, and uneaten, food without so much as an apology from the manager! I am from Louisiana, and I wish this 'Cajun Style' restaurant was in my town! Not only is the atmosphere festive (down to the piped in Zydeco music), but the dirty rice was some of the best I've had. Many of the dishes are names after NOLA Streets. I enjoyed the Conti (dirty rice, grilled white fish over sautéed veggies, garlic butter, red beans and a huge slab of garlic bread made from a po'boy bun). This would have easily been a $24.99 plate in NOLA, but NOT at Happy's...$9.99...amazing! I always enjoy my visits here and often times will order catfish, shrimp, boudin link and whatever other vegetable I'm hungry for that day. I usually only eat part of my order and carry the rest home for another meal. The staff is pleasant every time I patronize them and I enjoy speaking with the manager, Kevin. I would recommend this restaurant if you are wanting seafood or Cajun style foods.
