I was visiting family for Christmas and they suggested we go here as it's one of their favorite local spots. My grandmother loves their shrimp quesadilla. My husband ordered the shrimp quesadilla and I got the huevos rancheros. The service started a little rocky but our server was very nice and helpful as I have a pork allergy and she was able to help me choose a save option to eat. The food came out pretty quick and was delicious! I had a side of hashbrowns with my meal and they were nice and crispy. All the food was fresh and it was just like having a nice hime cooked meal.

We had a pretty long day and we were starving (so we thought) and this place was perfect for us. A local restaurant with the local Winonians hanging out. It's a bit like stepping into the past with a kind, polite waitress giving us the specials and good info for eating there. We enjoyed hometown comfort foods and both my hubby and would order those meals again. I had the hamburger steak and he had fried catfish. These meals came with a dessert- peach pie and blackberry cobbler. We plan on making it to breakfast sometime in the near future.

Beef tips and rice on Wednesday $9.99 real mashed potatoes and green beans. And of course sweet tea.

Went for lunch. Today was Beef tips and rice. The best tasting food I have had in a very long time. And $9.99 for this. Wow. It was too much for me. If your traveling on I-20 it's a great place and not very far from the interstate.

It seems like that they have a lot more dining space too. I don't know if we really ever been charged extra for any condiments, I know that when we asked for extra butter or something like that we have received plenty of it. When I had a food choice dilemma, the server usually would give me both if it was a small order of something at no extra cost. They always go the extra mile to satisfy us. Today we even paid for an elderly couple's bill, and slid out the door without them knowing about their bill being take care of by us. Hopefully it made their day. We can't afford to do that often, but if we see a Veteran or an elderly couple, just our way of thanking them without them knowing who did it. But we love the new location and as always tip the staff well when they do good.

The staff is super friendly! The restaurant is a quaint little cafe with a country feel! You can certainly tell that there is some home cooking going on in there. They have a vast menu that includes daily specials and barbecue. If I'm not mistaken, it is the only place serving barbecue in the area. The daily special on Sundays is pot roast. They also had a November special going on for the entire month which was Turkey and dressing, cranberry sauce, two sides, and a roll for $10.99. I placed an order of the turkey and dressing meal to go for my husband. I chose black eye peas and okra as the sides. It also came with a roll and turkey gravy. The portion sizes are a bit small. But it was all pretty good. The black eye peas are delicious! I ordered the 2 meat barbecue plate with sliced brisket and smoked sausage, potato salad, and baked beans. It also came with a roll and three barbecue sauces to have on the table. The hot and spicy was my favorite! It was not very spicy but had just the right amount of tanginess that I prefer. The sweet was my least favorite. The original is okay as well. The brisket was smoky and tender but the pieces were a bit small. The sausage was good! The potato salad needed some salt and pepper but was quite good as well. The baked beans were delightful! I do wish the portion sizes were a bit larger. And some onions and pickles on the side would have really been nice! But for $13.99, it was not bad at all! My daughter chose the popcorn shrimp appetizer (which came with quite a large mount in a basket over fries) and the popcorn shrimp salad. She's been on a popcorn shrimp kick lately! The shrimps were huge for being "popcorn shrimp"! The cocktail sauce was delicious! The ranch is also good. The fries were nice and crispy! And her salad was fresh and covered in plenty of shrimp. We chose to take some desserts home as well. We chose cookies and cream pie slice, a mini cherry cheesecake, and peach cobbler. All three were delicious! We will definitely be back to try some other menu options!

We went as far as Lake Athens to the Athens Boathouse Bar and Grill (which we knew was closed), to check out the location. We tooled around Athens just enjoying the Sunday. Callaways Coffee and Bistro popped up as a little house with adorable photos and lovely reviews and off we went. It was perfect. They have REAL FOOD here. I tried to reproduce the menu, but seriously they have pages of breakfast, salads and sandwiches. And COFFEE, of course. They accommodated us quickly got us our drinks, and took our order in a speedy manor. It took a bit for the food to come out, but they were making 12 orders to come out at roughly the same time, so no worries there. Chicken fried steak, eggs over medium, grits (asked for cheese on top), biscuit (no gravy). The food came out and it was a nice plate. The steak wasn't the largest I've seen by any means (they often take up the whole plate but this one was about 1/3-1/2). Eggs were well cooked--over medium being still runny yolk, but the whites are solid w/no slime to them. They nailed those eggs. The steak was good, the breading was wonderful--large flakey batter, fried perfectly, decent flavor, though it certainly was meant to need that gravy. Gravy was great, not sweet at all (yeah, I've had sweet sausage gravy before, ick) and seasoned well. I just had to add pepper for my own tastes, but no salt of anything else. Even though my initial impression was that it was slightly small, it was delicious and honestly, perfectly filling--I'm trying to lose weight and eat smaller portions (down 22lbs, yay) so maybe they were secretly helping me. The grits were great, however I didn't get my cheese. They were cooked well, not mushy or slimy, not "gritty" from undercook. Good stuff. As for the missing cheese, that's OK, I mixed in some of the leftover gravy from the steak (there was plenty) and that made them absolutely delicious. The biscuit was large and clearly homemade. Great thin crust and very fluffy on the inside. Enough butter flavor built in they were very easily eaten by themselves or with any condiment you could want. Very good biscuits! The ladies were good about keeping up with us and our refills and were fun and flirty the whole time, making us feel like regulars (well, some of us were regulars, so I just rode their coattails for the attention). The parking lot is a minefield, but if you find the space to wedge a car, you've found a parking spot. Would absolutely go back.

Food was cold. Waitress was nice but overworked. Grilled biscuits were good, but gravy was cold.read more
