LOVE HARBIN! A magical experience, every time. There's something healing about the place, the waters, yoga, soil, trees. The vibe is mellow and relaxing. Their waters are treated with ozone and peroxide... naturally, and the soaking pools use natural hot spring water. I suggest going from the hot water to the cold by the river, back and forth, being in the meditation of this rhythm with nature. I've been visiting these sacred grounds for the past 20 years. It's great to see Harbin grounds coming back into flow more and more. Praying they rebuild the yoga dome. This is a healing retreat, clothing optional at the pools, with a membership fee and rules to follow, so be respectful when you go. Sure, the place changed a lot after being completely burned to the ground-- so many years were spent making it what it was, and it was the layers of the years and the attention to details infused in the process over those years that had made the grounds and dwellings of Harbin so amazing. Now, much of that has been replaced with trailers and such. But the pools, specifically the hot and cold, are the same; the coy fish too, and some of the domes. Make sure your expectations are aligned. Less complaining, more appreciation. That said, the prices have gone up significantly for daily rates since the fire, and that's a bummer.

Magical time once again. Love the domes. Wild wind last night! Love coming here and letting nature embrace me!! Thanks again Harbin staff.
I have been coming to Harbin on and off for 7 years. I make a point of trying to get to Harbin at least a few times each year if not more. It's a wonderful drive from San Francisco and the experience is amazing. Harbin has a beloved rustic quality to it that I find charming. Even if I'm only staying for the day I typically park near the meadow and make a relaxing walk through the beautiful forest to the pools, its a shaded walk and I always luck out in spotting deer or other wildlife while on the trail. The pool area is clothing option. The water is so very lovely. I enjoy spending my time going from pool to pool with varies in temperature. My personal favorite is the meditation pool. There is very limited whispering acceptable in the pool so it is a nice peaceful place to be, the warmer than bath water temp is so lovely as you slowly walk in, it takes over and warms me right down to my soul. Trails are BEAUTIFUL. I highly recommend following the signs up to The Tea House. The views are stunning from the destination and the hike is easy going, fun and relaxing. Both the pool side cafe and the restaurant have great food fare. It's healthy, natural and has something for everyone. The food is not cheap, but it's not outrageous. I recommend cooking your own vegetarian meals at the community kitchen. The people at Harbin range from high powered doctors to life long peace keepers. I've met so many different types of people up there, it's been interesting to share in the experience with them. As a single women I often attend Harbin a lone and in all honestly, I feel more safe here totally nude than I do with a group of friends wearing clothes hanging out downtown. I've never had any issues with anyone. Being able to detach from technology is a big plus for me. I live on and am surrounded by technology 24/7 and once in awhile, I like to disconnect. When I reach the Harbin grounds and look at my IPhone, it's a blessing and a weight lifted off my shoulders when I read......... "No Service". I've introduced Harbin to as many of my friends as I can and we enjoy going up together and spending a relaxing 6 hours soaking. Pack a picnic lunch to eat on the decks, chat, laugh and sit in peace together. We always feel totally rejuvenated. As for placed to stay I have only done the Tent Cabin and then camped on my own. I love the tent cabins, they are ideal and pretty fairly priced. I've camped in my own tent and also slept in the back seat of my car which is rather comfy! The sites you can place your tent are beautiful. It does get VERY HOT at Harbin in the summer months, so I suggest camping under trees if possible. This is a family-friendly facility and the rules are enforced. read more

My partner and I came here to celebrate our one year anniversary. I have friends and family members who rave about it so I had been wanting to experience it for a while. First of all the drive up there is beautiful. Gorgeous vineyards and mossy trees for miles. Made reservations over the phone on the way up there, probably not a good idea, but we were lucky and able to book what we wanted. Our receptionist was very soft in his mannerisms and had a sense of humor. He wrote down helpful notes on our map. You need to pay for a membership in order to use the facilities. They offer a one month membership for $10 or a one year for $30. We opted for the latter. We enjoyed the fresh brisk December air on our short walk to our room. It's so easy to breathe there, like pure oxygen. Our cottage was beautiful inside and out. There is a pond with water lilies and a fountain outside the french doors. The room was a warm relief from the outside cold. We enjoyed yoga/stretching on the spacious carpets around the bed. The quiet privacy made for a wonderful space to connect. We ate dinner in their cafeteria. They offered vegan, veg, and meat dishes as well as some tasty looking dessert. We ordered basic brown rice and veggies and were given ample servings. We were so content after dinner we took a four hour coma. We both woke up around 1:15am and decided we needed to try the pools, that's what we had come for, after all. We enjoyed a mostly private (there were three other guests when we first showed up) soak under the stars. The pools we were in seemed clean and clear. We were barely there 24 hours and can't wait to return. The air is amazing, the scenery is beautiful, you can get your healing and restoring vibes on, and the staff we encountered were all polite and friendly. It's a shame not everyone can enjoy the same experience. The people who come as spectators to places with clothing optional policies really ruin a potentially healing experience for someone else. It's unfortunate. One thing I would recommend to people is to bring your own food. They have a communal kitchen you may use to prepare food. No meat though. As much as my partner and I enjoyed our dinner, I was glad he picked up a bag of mandarins on the ride up, because we were hungry later. Next time I'm looking forward to a watsu with the same person my sister has been going to. Soon! I highly recommend this place but also highly recommend educating yourself about what to expect. Though we were there for a day it felt blissfully longer. read more

Ok - so for the last 16 years or so this was my and once I met my husband our favorite little retreat to come to. I would say we came 3 times a year for years - I once stayed for 6 days but mostly we came for 2 - 3 days. The nature is amazing and you feel like you have been away for days. The water is sooo healing and beautiful and I wish I could still say that this place is one of my favorites - but sadly it ain't so... Last time we where there was just awful - I don't know what exactly happened - but it seemed that all the freaks where out. The people where just really freakish and one guy that was there was covered in sores - from top to bottom and he was in the pool. He looked and sounded like a meth addict - maybe he was in recovery - but still... I saw him later in the dressing room - so I could see the sores close up and some where open sores!!! It just gave me the creeps. There also was a lady that got out of the pool and she had blood running down her legs!!!! OMG - really? You got to be frigging kidding me! I never went back into the pool for the rest of our stay and low and behold when we got back i had a rash on my stomach that was really itchy and I had to go the Dermatologist to have it treated. My friend was just there for New Years and since the rooms have to be vacated by 12 noon she put her stuff in her car which was parked in the private lot. She paid the 4 hour rate to stay a bit longer and when she drove home she realized that her car had been broken into and all of her valubales including wallet, ID, iphone, had been stolen. When she called Harbin to report it they could have cared less and they told her that some other things had been stolen as well. OK HARBIN!!! What about security cameras in the parking lot - and what about plenty of good lockers on the premesis???? My friend left her things in the car because the lockers where all full! The place gets sooo overcrowded now (especially on Holidays and in the summer) that alot of times the pool is like a can of sardines. The prices are getting redicoulus for the service one gets and the hygine is questionable. Management should put a cap on the number of visitors - but they seem to care about the cash flow only... Last year I had a bodytreatment (a body wrap) and the practitoner was coughing and constantly blowing her nose - she assured me that she was fine. I should have followed my instinct and not go through with the treatment but did not want to be rude - so I came home and got sick as a dog with a horrible cold. There are a few more incidences that happened, but I do not want to go on and on... The acummulation of all those things and the yucki feeling I was left with at our last visit and the high and mighty attitute of many of the staff lately unfortunately made this former Harbinista into a Harbin Noper! read more

Came here to spend the day soaking in the hot springs and tanning naked in the sun. I'd give this place 2.5 stars if I could. Didn't think it was spectacular, but would possibly come again if I was in the area. The location is pretty and the facilities seemed clean enough. Wasn't so thrilled about the couple making out in the hot springs, but that's not really Harbin's fault. Overall it was a "meh" kind of experience and basically made me REALLY miss Osento. read more

How Harbin would be if it were run by Suzanne...by Suzanne 1. The food would be cheaper. Honestly, Seared Ahi...$24? I hopeit's because tuna's going extinct...hmm...the chicken yesterday was the same price, so I doubt it. 2. No one....I mean NO ONE...sleeps in the new lounge even if it means it gets locked at 1am. They leave it unlocked all night and posted signs about how security will bust the hippies who sleep there, but we all know that's crap. The hippies will sleep there because they want to sleep on a nice couch for free, and pretty soon, all those couches will stink. Doesn't really bother me because I don't care for the decor...it remind me of my parents house. 3. No lame watsu in the middle of a crowded tepid pool on a Saturday. You guys are killing me...and get your lame, dread-headed girlfriend's foot out of my face. BONK...oh, that was just Creepy Old Guy giving the poor 20-something single girl a watsu she didn't have the nerve to say no to. And while we're on the subject... 4. Single guys must pretend we all have our clothes on. Just because we're naked does not mean we want to do you even though....we know...we're halfway there. Whether is "do you want a grape?" or "Can I give you a massage?" Geez, what is this...Burning Man? I watched four single 20something girls on a weekend together barely get a moment's peace all weekend. Nothing is more fascinating at Harbin than single women in groups. One of them's got to go for the guy...right? My husband abandoned me in the pool on a Sunday, and suddenly, all single guys' eyes went to me. I should have pulled out a hat and tap danced...but I was naked. 5. Grow food in the garden, and serve it. They have acreage for gardens, and the best of my knowledge, don't serve anything they grow in their restaurant. I'm from Davis, and that's a crying shame. In fact, there wasn't much of anything in the garden, tho it is August. I noticed lots of dead berries on the bushes...didn't anyone pick berries? What would I keep? Everything else...especially the wild turkeys. But leave your Wild Turkey at home...there's no drinkin'. read more

Harbin only gets one star from me, and that's saved from zero only because of the excellent spa services. I had an ok Watsu session - found out that it's not my thing. Also, if you do decided to get this water twirling "body work massage", only get a really experienced practitioner. It's a subtle thing, and 1.5 years isn't enough experience to make it great. Demand to know how long your person has been doing it, before you book it. Harbin won't tell you upfront. But Cora did an amazing job with my ultimate pampering package. At $180 (birthday present) the 2.5 hours were delightful. Aromatherapy exfoliation, followed by aromatherapy massage, hot towel wrap, facial and hot oil scalp treatment. My hair still is soft and shiny, and my skin is smooth. One downside, on a busy day you might stand outside in your slippery, corn-meal covered skin waiting to rinse off the exfoliant in one of the two showers everyone uses to rinse before and after the pools. Luckily I didn't have to wait. Otherwise, I did not like this place at all. Its pretentious, hippier than though atmosphere irked me. Reasons I won't go back: the hardcore cruisers the selfish people doing pseudo watsu in the middle of a crowded pool the piss temperature pool, followed by the only other options - scalding hot, freezing cold or air-temp pool the vegetarian-only kitchen (how rude for us that eat meat) the over-priced food in the restaurant, where I have to take care of my own dishes for $20 a plate the grumpy staff the funky smell in the showers, public toilets and dressing room the worry that I am going to get athletes foot from the showers the small sauna the lame plastic-chaired steam room the repeated caution to lock all my valuables away (things "wander) - couldn't even lock my doors at other places and had no problem. I could go on, but it's just not even worth the energy to type about. I will not go back even for spa services, since I would then have to pay $35 to get in before paying for the treatment. I'll just go to Wilbur instead. My opinion - pay the extra money and go to Wilbur for the day, or camp there. It's only 20 minutes from Harbin, but YEARS better in experience. And Orr is another great alternative, but a bit longer drive. read more

I can see how Harbin might be a divisive place. Obviously, if you have hangups about nudity (your own or others'), it's probably not going to be your cup of tea. You'll also get a dose of new age culture. This does not mean you'll be required to participate, just that you'll witness it in everything from the workshops available to conversations you'll likely overhear. I guess it's true that there is a certain code of "rules" as well (although they all seem sensible to me). If any of the above rubs you the wrong way, you might not enjoy your stay. That said, I fall squarely on the side of the divide that loves Harbin. In my opinion, it's a little slice of heaven. I have been there several times now, both alone and with a girlfriend. I have thoroughly enjoyed every visit. The natural setting is majestic and serene, and the actual pool area is very idyllic, replete with grapevines on trellises, beautiful views from balcony sundecks, and abundant sunshine most times of the year. If you want to plan ahead, there are several levels of accommodations available, from affordable shared dormitories (which are not co-ed) to plush(er) lodges that run up to the mid-$200 range per night. If you are feeling more spontaneous, you can bring a tent or sleep under the stars for $40 or so without a reservation. 6-hour passes are available too. As far as other services, I've received a massage which was pretty good (not great, but that's just one experience). I have eaten in the main restaurant, which is a bit expensive but the food is great and usually served quickly. Just pretend you're out at a nice restaurant in the city; both the price and quality are comparable. I have not taken any workshops, so I can't speak to that. I have done some hiking. The trails are nice albeit kind or rocky and dusty (it is a pretty arid area). If you haven't been, hopefully you can decide ahead of time if it's for you. Hopefully this and other reviews will assist in that. read more

I had no idea this place existed before my brother told me about it. I felt like I had found the mystical unicorn that everyone keeps talking about but has never seen. First of all, very remote location. In fact, your cell phone might not work at all as you approach the site. But fear not, you are in safe hands when you approach the gate. It's a place of rejuvenation and relaxation. But it's more than that because there are daily classes available to all visitors. Yoga, music, writing classes, and nia dance class are among some of the amazing choices. There is a small donation fee requested but other than that it is included in the price of your admission to stay on campus. Once there whether you're camping, staying in a dorm, or sleeping under the stars on the deck, you will find this little oasis a refreshing respite from the chaos of daily living. Everything you need is right there. There's a market, a restaurant, an ATM machine, a couple of clothing stores (although this place is clothing optional), and of course the main event the hot springs! So it's set up like a mini village that you are free to walk around in from one end to the other. Be prepared to hike up some steep hills. You definitely will get a work out! The location of this facility is up in the hills. So no worries of strangers from outside the camp infiltrating the serene solitude of this place. No electronic devices, and the use of cameras and cell phone use is prohibited while near the pools. There are at least 5 pools that I counted. Various temperatures from scalding hot, to fairly cool. The great thing about this place is the pools are open 24 hours a day. So feel free to take a dip at 10, 12, 2:30 am. Or watch the sun rise. Whatever suits your needs the pools will be available. And then there's the spa treatments. So many to choose from! I went for a deep tissue massage by Yaselow. I swear it was the best massage of my life. He totally got to the pain of my frozen shoulder. I was very impressed. The way it works is you pay for 24 hour period to stay. If you arrived at 6 pm, then your permit lasts till 6 pm the next day. No check out necessary but you do need to check back in with all parties involved if staying longer. I wanted to stay longer. I think next time I will come up during the week. Weekends are their heavier times of congestion. Still I thought it was fabulous experience. The place is a little older. It is not a B&B or fancy hotel resort. There are housekeepers but their job isn't making your bed while your away. Just a very simple get away that is more about the spirit and your surroundings. There's community bathrooms, showers, and kitchens. You have privacy of your own stall for a shower if you want it. Community kitchen seems to be stalked with certain supplies but I didn't use it, so I can't say for sure. Children are also welcome. They are permitted in the pool areas during the day but not at night. It's very much a no talking or no loud voices zone at night. I very much enjoyed swimming under the stars. I felt grounded and happy to be there. So, if your looking for a getaway that's completely different than the mainstream type of getaways, consider opening yourself to a new experience. The people are friendly, the food is good, and the atmosphere is genuinely beautiful. Hopefully you will find solace from your troubles and be able to re-center your life. :) read more

very poor service. Staff was very rude at check in and check out. They let us know that our up beat energy was not welcome there! This is a good place to go if your alone Wanting total silence... not a good place for a girls trip, or for a group of more then 2. pools are pretty gross.... hippy bath and floating skin tabs. Feels slimy. Silence in almost all "pools" The large dome/shared bathroom is AWESOME!! noise transfers easily though- the guy staying below us had to tell us to be quiet. The food is pretty good! $20 per plate. They have neat clothing you can buy too. The service is what turned me off the most. Those employees need a break! They dont seem very happy :( Also, Im not sure how often the pools are cleaned out, if ever? The slime was pretty freaky. read more

It really is beautiful. It really is magical. It *can* be incredibly restorative & healing. But...you never know what you're going to get (or more specifically *who*) when you go. Sometimes people are peaceful & respectful, sometimes they're just gross. I personally saw way too much inappropriate sexual contact going on in full public view & was subject to unpleasant & unwanted attention from men. Harbin does have signs forbidding this, but they don't enforce it so people tend to do what they want. That being said, it's still beautiful, it's still quiet & the pools are amazing. In spite of people getting sexual in front of me, in spite of icky comments & stares, it was still relaxing & healing & an overall positive experience. You just have to know that you're dealing with the public in an environment where 99% of the people are nude. By & large people were cool & kept to themselves, but as you know the rotten apple spoils the bunch. There were couples very obviously on mind-altering substances all but having sex in the middle of the pool. There were creepy guys staring & commenting. Tends to put a damper on your meditation. It would be nice if Harbin staff would monitor this stuff a little better & enforce their own rules. I'll still go again, but I would pick my dates & times carefully - the less people there, the better. read more

First time. Had a Blast. Camped two nights in the Dome Tents. Met some cool people, but hard to talk cuz signs say "Silence" in certain areas like the Meditation pool. I checked the Med pool. The pool was supposed to be hot but was 100 degrees or less. Water a little dirty, so we went to the Heart shaped pool. Perfect temp. Spent at least 10 hours in the heart pool in 2 days. The mineral content is excellent, water was clean. I was totally relaxed and felt better than I can remember. The lovely hand crafted Temple was sweet. Great Yoga in the Temple and a wonderful instructor. I was totally relaxed beyond my greatest expectations. The scene may not be for all of you. Way quiet. Hippes/Naked/Peace/Love/Harmony/Way Earthy/ Relatively Clean/ Nice facilities/ Good Contruction/Eco/Recycle/Vegan. Mild Hater' attitude apparently because of the because of the car I drive. But hey. Even Hippies can be haters at times. Overall. I loved the place. It may not be for everyone. But if you want total relaxation, this place may just be for you. It was busy for mid week, so I might concider avoiding a weekend visit during the spring/summer.. Great mix of people. Great vibes. Oh yaa the Folk singer (Free Concert) was aw-some. So much to do, but I chilled and immersed myself in the culture. Had to think outside the box for a bit, but it was way worth it. I loved the set up. But be prepared for no alcohol. Vegan kitchen means no fish or meat can be cooked except for in the restaurant. Loved it. Good Job Harbin! The place is like going to SanFrancisco/Tibet/Marin/Napa all in one shot. Invite change people. read more

Ahh... Harbin... At once, it's enigmatic, yet as translucent as the water in Lake Tahoe. The Neo-hippies behind the complex are guarded. No one that I talked to or know who have been have no idea that it's run some organization called the Heart Conciousness Church. As someone who doesn't like to contribute to the Salvation Army, or any other organization with religious ties, I was skeptical. However, it seems that their version of lunacy is relatively harmless - more of a loose collection of New Age-y, holistic healing ethics rather then a true religion. At the same time, all the employees will welcome you with open arms, and (as I'm sure you're aware), everyone is literally naked around the hot springs. Also, the previous reviewer is right - If you wear something in the hot pools, you'll stick out. Way out. Go naked, or go home. Prior to this year, I've been to Harbin once before on a wickedly crowded weekend where it was difficult to find a spot to put my stuff down on any of the decks near the pools. I still had a great time in my own little blissed out realm, and oblivious to whatever was going on in the outside world. I would have given it 5 stars before the start of this year. I came to back reality and my home highly recommending the place to friends. After conversing with them, and finding out about this website, I found out that there's sort of a swinger, leering and ogling type vibe that can sometimes be pervasive. Earlier this year, I returned to this enigma with a handful of friends. This time, I was more aware of the potential creepy-ness factor. It's there. It really is. I was still blissed out in my own world enough not to really care. However, if I was a single female, I'd be pretty creeped out by the sheer volume of dudes with eyes agape in the silent hot pool. I don't think I'd ever feel as though I was any danger at all, but the majority of guys there were just waiting to catch glimpses of female skin. One of my friends even called it the "Shark Pool," 'cause they were ready to pounce if any female showed any interest in them. It's sort of a joke - I've never known anyone to really be relaxed in a 'silence only' hot spring with their eyes wide open, watching anything with two X chromosomes walk by. Creepy. Pick-up Joint Central. Make that Pick-Up Joint Bizarre. I noticed it this time. However, there's a couple of ways to avoid it - go on a weekday, or go to the Heart Pool. I also got to explore the complex more. I got a therapeutic massage from Martine (I think) that was PHENOMENAL, and like nothing I've ever experienced. The communal rooms are great places to hang out and read, do inner reflecting or whatever silly New Age thing that you want to do. The kitchen area would be fun to hang out with the other hippies and converse or whatever. Next time, I'll bring some vegetarian stuff to cook in there. The on-site restaurant was very pricey, but produced some top-notch food. Next time, I'll be checking out the expansive hiking trail system on their massive property. Also, the dry sauna was great (although one of my friends had a creepy guy who started doing somewhat socially inappropriate things in there, like excessively loud "AAH"-s as he stretched, and loud chanting or something like that). I'll be back again, but here's my synopsis of the place: If you're female, you will get almost constantly ogled and leered at in the Silent Pool and the some of the time in the other areas around the pools and decks - you may want to go mid-week. However, it's entirely physically safe, just creepy at times. The complex is massive, and the areas outside of the hotspring pools are underutilized. A massage there is the closest thing to Nirvana on Earth. If you stay in your own world and ignore the people around you, you can have an incredible time there. read more

As you can tell from a mix of reviews, this place is absolutely amazing, but it's not for everybody. This place does get crowded, but it's popular for a reason. ATMOSPHERE: Comfortable, relaxing, communal. "Pick-ups" -- The men here are nothing but respectful. The chances of being "picked-up" on here are probably about the same as if you were at a beach. I've come here both with my boyfriend and a group of girlfriends, and the atmosphere here is completely comfortable, and not at all sexual. Harbin prohibits not only sexual activity in the pools, but even sexual energy (as in, don't even flirt or talk inappropriately, even if you're not doing something explicitly sexual). Demographics -- it's an interesting mix of people. Last time I saw a lawyer in his 40s reading the business section, next to a tattooed and pierced triad, next to a group of asian tourists. There is a handful of New Agers, but it's by far not the predominant group. Body types -- You'll see people of all ages, shapes, and sizes, with varying amount of hair, tattoos, etc, and I didn't feel judged or self-conscious at all. Clothing-optional -- if you do chose to bring a bathing suit because you're not sure if you'll be comfortable, that fine. Do realize, however, that you'll probably be one of the few people wearing one, and will feel overdressed, like wearing a tux to a casual dinner. We're not judging you, per se, but you will stand out. Do be a little daring, and try going bare -- it feels amazing to come out of the pool without a wet clammy bathing suit sticking to you. And you'll get a gorgeous even tan in the summer months. AMENITIES: Pools, Kitchen, Restaurant Pools -- the water is AMAZINGLY clean. Harbin does not use chlorine to purify their water, and instead uses an ozone filtration system, leaving the water smelling and feeling absolutely wonderful. This is the best reason to come here. The 114 degree hot pool is the EPIC. About the first 30-40 seconds it feels like your body can't possibly handle water so hot, but then it melts away all your tension all the way down to the bone. Kitchen -- the weakest link in this whole place. It's very dirty, and if you've never been to a communal kitchen at all, it could be quite a shock. This actually makes me glad the kitchen is vegetarian, because raw meat juice would be lethal in this place. There are no freezers or a microwave. Alcohol -- yes, there is no alcohol, but it would be completely unsafe given the bath temperatures and the saunas. This also keeps out people who can't go a weekend without binge drinking. Restaurant -- although it's expensive for what it is ($15-25 a plate, when it's really worth about $8-15), I haven't had a bad meal there yet. Dishes are very flavorful and healthy, and do serve meat options. SERVICE: So-so. People complain about the service, and I don't entirely disagree. The people who run the place are residents of Harbin, so it is not only their work place, but their home. This definitely changes the dynamic, and although most people are very friendly and helpful, a few act with a bit of self-righteousness. BOTTOM LINE: Coming to Harbin takes a healthy dose of self-confidence and acceptance of yourself and others. This place may not be right for you if you have low self-esteem, believe the human body is somehow shameful, or you don't enjoy being around other people. This is a communal, public, open space -- if you want privacy, try the women-only Osento in SF, Kabuki in SF for men's/women's only nights, or places with private rooms like Hot Tubs or other saunas throughout the Bay (even though they are not nearly as good). read more

Dear Ray,…
The manager, Alexa, reached out to me to close off on the hairy experience I had at the front gate. Thank God this place is open again! Life is so much better in the Bay Area with the healing vortex of these wonderful hot springs close by. They did such an amazing job rebuilding the pools and the cabins. I expected a stronger presence of visible reminders of the fire, but the place is beautiful again. The fig tree by the cold plunge is nourishing as ever. The creek is as enchanting as it used to be. Every time I have come back, there is something new to discover. The food is delicious, and the waters are healing. The landscape and the sky are magical. I am grateful for everyone who has supported this one-of-a-kind healing center. read more

Ive been coming here since I was a kid, I will always have a special place for Harbin in my Heart. I believe this place to be one of many very spiritual and magical places in California. The waters are nothing short of euphoric, healing aches pains stress and detoxing you all at the same time. A good hot soak and a cold plunge always leaves me feeling reborn. The food here is fresh, healthy and amazing. I love the fact that they have the community kitchen if you would like to bring your own eats. Ive met some wonderful people hanging out in the kitchen over a salad or tea. Camping is always fun at Harbin, wether your on the camping platforms at the bottom of the hill in the camping area, or watching the stars from the observation deck near the pools. There is something truly magical and unique about Harbin at night. If you find the time and the funds I highly recommend booking a stay in one of the houses that sit in the middle yard, the Manzinita room is amazing. I do have to say in recent years things have gotten a bit busy and overcrowded at Harbin, sometimes I shy away these days. Gone are the hippie touches I loved so much when I was a child. The crystals hanging from the fig tree over the pool, and the quiet moments spent alone in the hot water. For some reason Harbin started advertising itself in bay area papers and zines beefed up on treatments and spa features and started selling out to the yippies and gays. (Not that I don't enjoy the company of either because I most certainly do) I took my boyfriend recently, and for the first time my guest reported he was uncomfortable due to the eye raping taking place in every area of Harbin by what appeared to be cruising gay men. I had been on several other occasions when the pools seemed to be overcrowded and the basking areas filled with people right up to the edges of every pool. I was shocked to see a group of people waving dildos in the air on one occasion. While I will probably never stop coming to Harbin, as I said it holds a prime spot in my heart with found memories of childhood. I have switched my timing however, I no longer enjoy the sun here, instead I choose to come on Monday nights after 5 to enjoy the pools as there are fewer people. I find it to be on over all more relaxing and mellow time. I will always treasure the memories I have of Harbin and you cant live in the past so I will keep coming for the waters and the few moments of staring up at the stars floating. I do wish they would calm down on the advertising however and take a look back to their roots and values. read more
Harbin is a heavenly, magical place . we are truly lucky to live to close to get away from city-life once in a while. i've been going here for many years at random times (twice this month so far). the water is ancient, full of minerals and super good for you to soak in. people have flocked to these waters for centuries to cure ailments. the water is drawn from local springs and 50,000 gallons flow through the place every day. it is filtered and chlorine free and amazing for your skin. The grounds are extensive, tons of hiking trails and places to chill. there are also several buildings to hang out (library, chill out space, yoga temple), many sundecks to grab some vitamin D (minus the tan-lines), 3 yoga classes daily, massages, special workshops and dance events all the time. for sleeping there are plenty of options too (tent, dorm, private rooms, dome, tent cabins, etc) or you can just go up for the day. if you can get there during the week it is certainly less crowded. There is a really good restaurant for breakfast and dinner, serving both veg and carnivorous items (can be a bit pricey tho). alternately you can bring your own food and cook in the vegetarian kitchen, or grab something in the store. coffee served in the cafe all day. Clothing is OPTIONAL around the pools and sauna. and YES you will probably feel out of place in a bathing suit. of course there can be the random creep that can't stop staring as if they have never seen a naked person. and of course you might see more private parts hangin in one place than ever before, but who cares? if you sense the creepy guy checking you out i recommend little or no eye contact. most fun to go with a significant other or group of friends...as long as they aren't nudie-phobes! read more

I had a wonderful experience here this weekend, the hot and cold water pools were amazing, and the food was good, staying at the lower Creekside RV was also excellent, watsu therapy with Nico was awesome :-) I intend to get it again when I return, and I will be returning. This is the best place for pool bathing I have ever been to in a public place with clean spring water to soak in. read more

Harbin is a magical place. The grounds are beautiful, the community is unique, I'm all about the co-ed nudity. Awesome yoga 3x a day in the temple. Very special place. There's nowhere like it, and we'll certainly be back, but 2 starts off for service! I know they don't try to compete with luxury resorts, but we paid over $700 for two nights in a grove cottage including two meals a day (food is great), but the service is pretty regrettable. The lady at the front desk was downright rude upon checkin and throughout our stay. If we were camping and not well-paying customers, fine, I can deal with that. I just had higher expectations for the price. Overall, don't miss out. Such a healthy, happy energy. Shame on the service! read more

I came to this place last May with my boyfriend for his birthday. He had been to the hot springs before and was familiar with the environment, so I agreed. Even though I had never been to Harbin I thought it wouldn't be too uncomfortable..........yeah, right. First of all I will not recommend this place to any single females. Yes, the meditation spring is relaxing, but if I was not with someone I was in a relationship with or a group of friends, I would not have been very appreciative of the 80-year-old Acid casualty staring me down like a piece of raw meat. I have been to a hot spring in northern arizona, which was also clothing optional, but the aged hippies there we're way more friendly and casual, and the spot had a more of an "underground" feel then a creepy, behind-the-scenes brainwashed cult vibe like Harbin. I did find the overly Political Correctness of the other guests there very annoying. I am involved in a lot of communal spaces, but a lot of these people we're just holier-then-thou snobs, which is an attitude that definitely needs to be dropped in any communal space. I am more of the pierced and tattooed Punk type, so while I did get a few very pleasant compliments from other women about my appearance, the other 80% of Harbiners either ogled me or looked at me like I was a street urchin that had washed onto the shores of their pretty perfect Neo-Hippy paradise. Get over yourselves. This should be a place of relaxation and respect, not turning your nose up at others who seem "different" then you. On a positive note the mineral springs are great, the land is beautiful, and the kitchen is awesome.I also think the mineral water and steam room can do wonders for you if your sick. Unfortunately I did not get to experience a massage, the restaurant, or the private pools and lofts. Will I go back there? Upon my first impression of the place, that is a distant maybe.... I guess I would say to anyone who is interested in going there but is more of the independent type who doesn't align themselves with any religion, whether it's Christianity Or New Age Spirituality, Harbin is going to feel a little suffocating. But I would recommend it for a intimate couple who needs time to relax and bond, and can ignore the annoying advances and judgments of other people. And Also, Sneak alcohol in. read more

This is what I did at Harbin and I highly recommend it: 1) go in the really really hot tub. careful, it is really hot. 2) get out and go get in the really really cold tub. it is SO cold. 3) jump in the really hot tub again 4) get in the cold tub. man, it is SO cold. 5) jump in the really hot tub. ow. 6) cold tub 7) hot tub 8) cold 9) hot You can also go in the space-aged steam room and pretend you are in a NASA rocket ship (it's cool, everyone in there is thinking the same thing, "10...9... 8... 7... 6... 5... "). The steam room would be more fun if you could buckle in and it made liftoff noises. Just sayin. read more

Thank you Harbin. This is the most relaxing, opening environment I've ever encountered. From the moment I arrive, everything is let go. Does wonders for my soul, and my relationship! The pools are super calming and relaxing. They range from super hot, to ice cold. Going back and forth from hot to cold is the best. Most of the pools are silent, but there's also a lap pool, and a pool designated for talking. There are gorgeous decks to lay out on, particularly fun during the warmer summer months. The massage services are amazing. A watsu from Diana is HIGHLY recommended. They have a small shop for snacks and basic needs, a great cafe for coffee and hot chocolate, and an amazing restaurant, serving truly delicious food (though it is pricy...). They also have common kitchens, kept very clean, if you bring your own food, which I love to do. And the people are great. Everyone I've met here is incredibly open and nice, whether a simple hello or a long conversation. I come here at least once every two months for a weekend. A gem for city dwellers. read more
It's official. I've turned into a bitter, bitter old maid and i'm only 23. Alternating between the burning hot and ice cold pools is suppose to bring clarity and a sense of peace. What became clear to me was that the overabundance of couples at Harbin have the right idea. I found myself wishing that I had someone to float around the warm pools with. All the supported floating and massage looked pretty cozy. And my tent was feeling mighty cold and lonely at night without another person to cuddle up with. I don't know if I'd go back without either a close girlfriend (who didn't have her boy with her, as was the case this weekend) or a boy of my own. There was a lot of couple action going on and with the heart shaped pools and all it felt a little too much like Valentines Day land. read more

When I left Harbin, I was more zen than I have been in my entire life. I got to do yoga in the temple in the morning, eat an immaculate breakfast overlooking the trees, and I enjoyed the almost-strictly vegetarian atmosphere. That being said, there were some issues I had with the place. When we were checking in, the older guy in the gatehouse was REALLY rude. We forgot a flashlight, but my significant other has a flashlight on his (REALLY OLD) cell phone. When we stated this, he got huffy and insisted there were to be no cell phones because there were to be no pictures. My boyfriend's phone can't take pictures! It's a dinosaur! He wouldn't hear us out and was very short with us, even raising his voice. Also: $35 a person to CAMP? In addition to the $10 "membership fee"....seems steep for what you're getting: ultra-cramped camping around a LOT of poison oak. My only other gripe is the type of people that these places sometimes attract: over-rich snobs. At breakfast, we had the *delight* of hearing two BMW owners jerking each other off about their "ultra-impressive" cars. Gag me. Also, the labyrinth is a joke. The place still warrants four out of five stars, though. I was completely nude all around the springs and felt absolutely comfortable. It was well-maintained. It was GORGEOUS! It felt AMAZING! I was able to completely meditate in the trees without any restrictions, and no one bothered me. I was comfortable and relaxed and I felt very at-peace with everything by the time we drove out of there. We've decided to buy a year membership and drive the four-hours every now and then. read more

Wow, what a weekend! Spent Friday-Sunday at Harbin on a beautiful March weekend. A friend and I shared Fern 7, a room in a main building that also houses the communal kitchen. The room/bedding/half-bath was adequate if a bit dingy...but we spent very little time there, so it fit the ticket. Oh my gosh, we did everything there is to do at Harbin, including lazing around. The three no-conversation pools (warm, boiling, and freezing) are *great.* Everyone seems to use the soap and showers in front of the warm pool; I think the pools are as clean as can be expected considering their heavy use. Yes, there's some hair in there (maybe from you!); I didn't look too closely, just washed before and after use and throughly enjoyed them while immersed. After a few hot/cold cycles, I felt like I was about to float away, my body felt that good. At night, the hot pool, which is enclosed, was magical in the candle light. One great thing: Both mornings I woke up (not too early), grabbed my googles, and used the lap swim pool. I was all by myself under a gorgeous morning sky. Swimming naked was (surprisingly to me) glorious. Beginning yoga: went to two classes, both Iyenger style (not flow); they were OK. Lots of deep twists. The "temple" where the classes were held is perfect for yoga--round, nice windows, beautiful high sloped ceiling. The temple was also where we listened to Bhakti music on Friday night, which was amazing and almost put me in a trance. (Not even kidding; I lost all track of time.) A second great thing: Oldies dance party on Saturday night in the temple. Roll your eyes all you want, we had a great time dancing. This is a crowd where your moves will not be the weirdest, and if they are, that's a good thing. Excellent sound system. Such a fun time. Are there people being quite intimate in some pools, some times? Yes. MYOB, they don't care about you, just close your eyes and enjoy your bliss. No one was inappropriate to me or around me; people were friendly in the best possible way. Almost forgot: Great scrub/massage by Cora. Just the best. PS the pools do not have chlorine or sulphur as stated in some reviews. read more

I don't have a problem with naked people of all shapes & sizes. I don't have a problem with hippies (having grown up in the land of). I don't have a problem with naked hippies. I DO have a problem with naked hippies offering me watsu every time my travel partner left me unattended. Dude, I just want to relax, read my book & chill. I have no interest in your spiritual healing powers, water massage (watsu), or communal living situation. I've been here with a group of girls (ok, well protected from Watsu Sharks), during Ancient Ways (CROWDED, but ok, well protected by many friends, there's something to this "swim in a large school" as a predator protection plan) and once, with just one companion (see above). During Ancient Ways, there were "pool monitors" - think your Catholic School Dance 6" rule. Yeah, bizarre, but necessary. While the place is nice - the pick up vibe bugged me. Also, a friend who loves it & goes frequently knows when the conventions/large classes are there & avoids it then. If you want to go, check who else will be there (they have a calendar on their site). Depending on your interests, you may want to avoid (or attend if that's your gig) the times when Watsu etc classes are offered as the attendees sometimes circle offering their services... read more

I've been to Harbin 3 or 4 times now. It's everything you would expect- from the relaxing heat/cold/warmth of the springs to the patchouli reek of some nekkid hippies. I also find that getting a room with a half bath is the way to go. I haven't camped, but that seems like a cool option. The rates are pretty cheap compared to the other hot springs resorts in a 50 mile radius. I enjoy going here. BUT, there is a little hippy hypocrisy happening here. (Accidental alliteration-ha!) You are supposed to shower off before getting in the pools. You are supposed to put a towel under your butt in the sauna. You are supposed to follow all the rules in the kitchen. And not use a cell phone. Or eat meat. Or talk above a whisper in the pools. I understand rules. I really do. But when I see people breaking all those rules, when children are splashing and swimming 'laps' in the heart pool, when someone steals my umbrella from outside of the restaurant, and when that aforementioned restaurant gives me attitude and can't accommodate my order of an omelet without egg yolk.... in a place that's so anti- animal protein anyway?! GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK. I'll still go there for the nature and the pools and to get to be naked, but it's a little silly. The hippy ethos is on overdrive....but it's almost a little gimmicky. read more

I had the chance to experience first hand Harbin Hot Springs. I am glad I can provide a thoughtful review which can hopefully be helpful, as I know there are a lot of differing reviews. My husband and I spent two nights in the Jasmine cottage, over the weekend. Overall, our experience was very positive, relaxing, inspiring, unique and fun. To start, if you are considering a visit to Harbin, you probably should go, as this might mean you are open-minded and possibly looking for not only a peaceful setting, but a mental retreat. The first thing to accept is that the property is "clothing optional' with the exception of restaurants, yoga, etc. I mostly only experienced the 95% no clothing at the pools. If it's not something you've ever experienced, like me, at first it is awkward. It is so out of the norm and you might be self-conscious. There are all kinds of people, but truly down to the bare skin, not a lot of differences. I didn't feel like there was much interaction with people in the pool area and this to me, was helpful as it allowed you to just to be present. I didn't feel anything weird or uncomfortable. You are not there to to look, be judged or judge so it's a bit freeing, although still not 100% comfortable per se. The guest accommodations were very nice. The cottages are wonderful with wood floors, high ceilings, views. The bed comfortable, quality linens and exceptional towels. Having stayed in many fine resorts, the bedding/linens are important and this was exceeded with the quality, down pillows, etc. The grounds are amazingly peaceful and inspirational. There are lots of areas next to a bubbling stream where you can sit quietly. Beautiful views everywhere and a definitely peaceful vibe. I noticed the quiet-ness at night and in the public areas. I attributed this to the no-alchohol policy as this was very quiet, even on a Fri/Sat evening in July. If you do go, I would advise going with an intention to relax, renew and possibly find inspiration. Experience everything you can. I found a beautiful heart shaped amethyst hand made by the artist who shared his stories about his jewelry making. When you go to the market, say hello and try the amazing hummus. One of the highlights of our visit was meeting with Carol. She is/does Tarot cards. Going in with zero expectation and loads of doubt, I came away wondering how the cards were so right?! Believe me, I am not into anything new age, but it was very inspiring. The food is very good, mostly vegetarian with some fish/chicken. The quality and taste excellent but expensive and the dining room is self-service. They also have a kitchen where you can store your own food and cook if you like. We stored some cold items and I went up and saw some amazing vegetarian dishes being cooked by guests. You have access to a complete kitchen. A lot of people have commented on the "types" of people here... I found a huge variety. I happen to notice where I was parked, three BMW's, an Audi, Lexis, Prius and a VW hippo van. All kinds of people too. Suburbanites, professionals, educators, lawyers... were there; and of course people that had amazing dreadlocks. The far majority was just nice, pleasant, quiet people who came for a retreat. The pool area is not luxurious, but the pools are very soothing. If you go, bring your own towel and a chaise or other chair possibly as these are limited, as are shade umbrellas. The views of the valley area beautiful. If you wouldn't go in a hotel pool or spa, or are a germa-phobe, this might not be right for you. It's seems clean and fine but it is still a shared hot pool. My overall recommendation is that you visit Harbin with an open mind and be prepared for what might be unexpected. Keep expectations in check that this is a retreat - a place to quietly contemplate and enjoy nature. The property felt safe, secure, very comfortable and the overall experience is very renewing. read more

Just got back from my third visit to Harbin Hot Springs (I go only once a year). I used to dream about this place because I always felt so revitalized afterward. This past visit was a little less euphoric... but let's first start with the good stuff: 1. The pools are incredible! I usually do the hot pool, cold pool sequence at least 3 times and then jump into the swimming pool -- and yes, it is freezing in November but so refreshing! 2. Relatively cheap if you camp. 3. I loved that there's a cute grocery store, a cafe, a library and theatre on the premise! Now the not-so-good aspects: 1. I'm very annoyed and disappointed by the typical white, upper middle class, totally New Aged out, privileged population that frequent this place. Where's the diversity, people? 2. Don't get me wrong, I'm a spiritual person myself, but many of the folks here have their heads stuck in the clouds and can't seem to get themselves back down. Crystals, "om"-ing, kombucha, your "Free Tibet" bumper stickers, dancing like you're possessed by a goddess - none of this feels really genuine. 3. Camping in November - it's always been freezing, rainy and just this last week, winds of about 40 mph blowing throughout the night. If you can get a room or tent cabin, do it! I've returned more pessimistic than ever about the place, but I can predict that this won't stop my boyfriend and I from keeping our tradition of spending Thanksgiving there each year... so we shall see you all again. read more

I love the relaxed atmosphere here, along with the amenities for soaking and sweating. The pools are always in great shape, with the fig tree providing a nice accent to the main soaking pool, and I've never experienced any issues with couples being overtly sexual. The hot, hot pool is a little tough to get into, as is the cold plunge, but I've braved it for the experience. I really don't know how some people can so easily move from one to the other. My wife & I have camped in the meadow and stayed in one of the yurts near the domes. Everyone we've encountered there has always been friendly. We've even taken a workshop at the conference center. The food there is excellent. They cook mostly vegan food. They have a full range of massage therapists on staff. Enough to satisfy some rather exotic tastes, going from your regular shiatsu, all the way to the Watsu water massages in the pools. Since the HHS policy is for no alcohol, my wife & I tend to wine taste in Napa on our way up to Harbin, then tour the wineries around Middletown in the afternoons, before taking in the Mt. St. Helena Brewery for dinner before heading back for a nice soak in the pools before retiring to our campsite. For those who want the really sparse experience, they have a deck area where you can throw down a mat and sleeping bag. They offer morning yoga classes for beginners and intermediate levels, but those require that you at least wear shorts or something. I had hoped to experience nude yoga, but I'll have to find that somewhere else. read more

So, I didn't realize that this type of place existed. Apparently, I've been living in a refrigerator. But once the idea was planted into my mind, how could I not go to check it out? Yes, there are naked people here. And, yes, it is coed nakedness. I was probably the shyest most self-conscious teenager growing up and never felt comfortable walking around a woman's locker room but the tranquility surrounding the pools seemed to melt all that away. And I reveled in my new found freedom. The hot sulfur pool (150) is amazing. Yes, it's hot. Very hot. But tolerable was you're in. The combination of sitting in the hot pool and dunking in the cold, cold water becomes habitual and extremely relaxing. The quiet meditative aura of pools aids in this as well. Stay hydrated. I've been twice and hope to keep going back. read more
I'd been sufficiently warned before going here, having read both good and bad things. I'd never been to a nudie spa or hot spring before, and was, admittedly, a little freaked out. I was pleasantly surprised, though, whenmy friend and I didn't find the place ENTIRELY full of hippies when we arrived last weekend. There were an interesting assortment of folks @ Harbin -- some kooky Burning Man types, some hippies, a couple of hipsters, some old folks. For the most part, the people were nice. We stayed for 2 nights in one of the rooms with a private bath. It felt like a no-frills hotel room (without a TV, sadly ;); it was clean enough and we had no big complaints. We had our own little patio, which was nice. The women who worked at the Harbin coffee bar were super-sweet, and the lattes were good. The "on-campus" restaurant was fairly tasty; prices were medium-to-high. The only complaint I had here was the crazy line that formed at the restaurant at dinnertime -- it took forever for my friend and I to order our food! The actual hot spring experience was a bit weird. Honestly, I didn't love the hot pool itself; it was just too crazy-hot for me. I liked the warm pool and the regular old swimming pool. I did find the warm pool a bit crowded, though, and mostly full of icky naked couples in some type of embrace. Awkward for the rest of us! We watched a movie in the theater one night, which was fun. They screen movies every night and people watch them from a den of pillows. HIPPIES! It was really comfy and fun, though. I got a massage plus a hot body-wrap thing -- both were pretty good, though the wrap was a bit intense. Really hot. The woman laid me under a ton of hot steamy blankets and I was sweating like mad. I guess it releases toxins? Overall Harbin was cool for a strange weekend getaway. I'd come back... maybe. read more

Unfortunately I tried to handle this situation with management but was met with silence and no explanation. My husband and I came for a 2 day retreat to celebrate our 29 years of marriage. We have been here before and really enjoyed our stay therefore excited to have the same experience this trip. We were staying in the Domes and only the cooler pool was available due to therapy classes at the top warmer pool, no problem. However when we drove to the main pools we were met by a gentleman who was parked in 1 of the 2 disabled parking spaces without a placard or disabled license plate. My husband is permanently disabled and can not walk without assistance. I politely asked the gentleman if he had a disabled placard to which he pointed at a blue piece of blue paper taped to his windshield. So not being sure if that is some kind of private disabled sign, We went about our business. The gentleman then confronts me and asked what gives me the right to ask if he has one? I said I have the right to ask because we do have one displayed and he doesn't, I apologized and said I was just needing a place to park so my husband can go to the pools. We proceeded to go on to the elevator and try to relax and enjoy the pools. We stayed for about and hour then left to head back to our room to change for dinner. As we were entering the elevator the gentleman and a security person got in with us, no words were exchanged. As I was walking to my car the security person approached me and inquired about an altercation I had with the gentleman. I informed her there was no altercation and explained what happened and asked why he did not have a disabled placard displayed. She said the blue paper is all he needs. Ok, no problem. The security person proceeds to accuse me of being racist and that I should mind my own business. I proceeded to the office and asked to speak with a manager. Chuck greeted me and took me to his office to chat. I told him what had transpired and he was in agreement that the disabled placard has to be displayed. The blue paper is a parking pass given by the resort for Gazebo parking. Nothing to do at all with disabled parking access. Chuck proceeded to call Security and inquire about the situation. Whoever he was speaking to told him that the gentleman showed him his disabled placard but would not display it....which is against the law. So I was told by Chuck that the gentleman was ok to park there without displaying his placard because he showed it to someone. We then left and went back to our room. We tried going to the pools again 3 times that night and the hey was still parked there without a disabled placard. The following morning came down from our room and the gentleman was parked directly next to my car and was sleeping in his vehicle. Our presence woke him up and he started his car and drove away. He did not have any type of parking pass displayed and it was clear that he was not a guest at the Domes. Upon returning home we reached out to Chuck to inform him of what had happened and he kindly canceled our membership without hesitation. No apologies, no words of support or concern. Too bad because we really enjoyed our previous stays, and canceling our Membership was given after the way we were treated. Not a safe place and security is completely unaware of the handicap ADA laws not to mention under qualified and not professional. I thought that there would be better trained security staff but unfortunately that's not the case. Wish it could have been better. read more

Harbin remains a wonderful place to get away, with reasonable lodging, helpful staff and always a warm/hot or freezing cold tub to step into. The arrogant hippies remain a constant which accounts for the loss of a star from my previous review...here's a quote from the store clerk, "I don't normally give out bags (to carry your purchased items in), but you "look" like you need one..." WOW...because I didn't scoop up my 5 or 6 items and just walk off I "looked" like I needed a bag! I'm surprised she didn't call out the national guard to haul my ass off to the Green Concentration Camp, where people like me who use bags learn the errors of their ways! Aside from that though Harbin ROCKS! Most of the people are genuine and caring that are not on staff and even a few who are. The spiritual aspect is there for those that embrace it but I have been going up there for 4 years and have yet to have someone try and sell me a bill of goods that I didn't want to buy. Respect, kindness, self control, acceptance and peace...those seem to be the key ingredients that make Harbin what it is and I for one love it! If ever they could find a way to get staff members that practiced what they preach then it would be freakin' heaven! read more

I really don't know where to begin, so I'll try to keep this simple and to the point. What I Liked About Harbin: Its in a beautiful natural setting. The "warm" pool was very pleasant and invigorating, and the minerals in the water are a natural exfoliant. I would have been very happy if I just enjoyed the "warm" pool only, but only very early in the am before the sexual vibe and antics kicked off. There's a variety of food options, a restaurant and a cafe. The food is very basic and bland, but wholesome. There's also a store that sells health foods/snacks with a really high markup, so better you bring your own snacks or get fleeced. It has a quaint 60s-70s hippy/hot tub ambiance that was both nostalgic and got on my nerves at the same time (but I grew up in that era, so maybe it has a different context for those of you who didn't have to live through that). I didn't sleep over, but there seems to be a variety of accommodations, and some of the cabins looked like they'd be comfortable. What I Did Not Like About Harbin: Even though there is signage posted around the place reminding people to keep the vibe quiet and nonsexual, neither is the case. I tried my best to remain inwardly focused, but the shrill voice of a woman playing with someone's children in the swimming pool kept penetrating the stillness. I still remember her shouting: "I can't wait to have a gay child of my own, maybe I can make a baby with your mom and dad!!!"...and on and on it went like that, people being loud and "personal". I pretty much kept my eyes closed in the warm pool, because as the day progressed pairs of people were getting more and more freaky in there...but you still can't help feeling a few pairs of eyes burning holes into your backside as you climb out of the pool...YUK! The "hot pool" is waaay too hot, more like scalding, uncomfortable and dangerous, and the "cold pool" is icy and risky for anyone who is not in peak cardiac condition. After doing the consecutive hot/cold pools, I got very dizzy and nauseated and fell out, thus realizing no one there is trained in CPR. I spent the next couple of days with a horrible headache and nausea. All in all, it took me about 3-4 days to recover. I might be voted least likely to ever be caught soaking her naked body in a hot pool with a bunch of other naked bodies while sober. But it was awesome. I have a pretty sensitive sketch-o-meter, am not in the shape I'd consider worthy of flaunting and even I didn't hesitate to strip down and go native. The whole thing seemed completely civilized to me. Good food, nice people and absolutely fantastic massages. Wish I could give 4.5 stars because while it's not quite 5 stars, it's definitely worth the drive for an affordable escape. I'll be back. read more

History
Established in 1853.
For countless of years this land and its springs were a sacred healing place for the region's Native people. Today, Harbin continues as a unique refuge where all people - no matter their backgrounds or histories - can abide safely, relax, reflect, recharge, and get to know themselves more fully in the healing embrace of thousands of acres of undeveloped nature. In September '15, The Valley Fire swept through Harbin's land and destroyed most of its facilities; but we were able to reopen our pools and select guest services in January '19. Much of the property, however, remains in a raw state, and our offerings remain limited. For the next several years, we expect to be actively engaged the ongoing process of reconstructing Harbin's facilities, reclaiming its land and forests, and restoring its full selection of guest services and programs.

Looking for the first investigatory agency of many that is interested in exploring the very likely possibility that Harbin Hot Springs is a hotbed of human trafficking and the once loving community has fallen into the hands of a very secretive and dark commune- and or cult if you prefer. I recently came back to Harbin as a Healthcare Leader looking to use my platform for communication and professional development within a very large system to highlight non-traditional healing within the community. It was a couple days of sacred water healing for myself- some weird new energy and funk from the new owners- but mostly love and light and a collection of amazing humans from all over the world also seeking peace. I left feeling enlightened and prepared for a divorce decision and as I appreciated the families bringing their children into a less traditional family environment I decided to bring my family- 4 boys, my mom and husband to begin to explore how we would approach a divorce. When I brought my husband, mother and sons to this healing retreat in preparation for these discussions I very diligently worked to make sure I understood all of the rules, the "how" for camping, the "where" for children- etc. I took many notes and shared with my husband and mother and we decided to bring the whole family. While the website claims they are family friendly and dogs are welcome- as my husband worked to confirm all of his suspicions that they may not actually be- I tried to do the same from within the system asking all of the most pleasant and seemingly kind staff and avoiding the very intense- angrier staff. I eventually was able to speak to a "manager/owner/church member- 1 of 3 who make decisions on behalf of the church with regard to what happens there- I was told her name was Chayo, then Charro then a few other variations- but when she called me she said her name was Maria- she was not even seemingly perplexed why they were referring to her as any other name- and in the future any time I asked to speak with her with about future nasty interactions they said they didn't have a Maria working there- had no idea who I was talking about and when I said the pregnant woman- Latina, 34 weeks pregnant- sweet- was just here in the office trying to help me- blank stares.. Anyway it was NOT the sacred healing loving Harbin I was introduced to 25 years ago- but I am not resistant to change or afraid to seek clarification as many times as I need to to enjoy a retreat experience. While Many many many things have degraded since Harbin changed owners about two years ago (which was only confirmed and validated by every conversation I have had with healers throughout the Bay and from the community over in Napa and Calistoga since we fled to de-traumatize from Harbin. Many non-traditional healers I have worked with in my professional experience began to share- "oh for sure it's a commune, but has become more cult like and secretive with the transitions to new owners just after the fires". "Harbin has always been sacred- but this space has also been used in many capacities- both by healers and seekers of the sacred and also deviants - and it relies heavily on their own internal security "company" to keep the peace". With regard to security- The first issue with that- is you can't actually get to them when and where you need them- and when you do- look out- you may get a nasty one, an apathetic one- or one that can't show you the secret emergency "bat phone" that they say is by the tubs but is actually a fairly robust walk away from the springs. The shortest version of this very complex story (that I will continue to write and publish about within all of my professional avenues) is that my 13 year old was verbally assaulted there and then my very physically strong and "quick on the uptake" husband was shoulder checked by a "guest" who claimed to also own the experience and enforce the rules- that we weren't breaking! As I reported the threats and verbal assault that chased most of my family out of this place- I was forced to speak to the very inept "manager on duty" Chuck- Chuck has failed to communicate effectively, bumbled through check ins forgetting to give time the key and then failed in his duty to protect visitors as his only response to my report of these violations was to tell me to use the phones on the walls when things get aggressive and security will come to you. Immediately recognizing this is actually now my responsibility as a mandated reporter to escalate I began trying to request a call or communication with "Maria" leaving message and asking her to call me as we had already discussed the barriers the new owners seem to be having with communication and customer service that is more in line with a healing retreat. I never received a call or communication from Maria, Chyo, Charto again- I did see her briefly and smiled warmly and mentioned I would come seek her guidance on an issue- but she startled and didn't read more

This place is worth checking out once or twice. What I have learned of Harbin is that its actually the funnest when you've never been then slowly as you go more you start to notice the sort of negative elements that go along with this place. Having said that, if you've never been and you like hot springs and you like to not have to wear clothes then this is probably your best option. If you like hot springs and you like to wear clothes then there are probably a couple of other places around that are superior. The good is that this place is pretty unique, and the atmosphere is relatively chill. Their website will tell you of the specifics involved with the place, like the number of pools etc so I won't bother too much with that. You can get a pass for 6 hours or 24 hours, and I have never stayed more than 24 hours, I don't know how people last out there a couple of days, although I guess if you have a room its manageable, I have always just gone the camping route or just stayed for the day. I have been around 10 times now I suppose and of all the places I have been where there is nudity involved this place seems to have the lowest percent of weirdos / pervs. By lowest percent I just mean comparatively, like most clothing optional places will have about 60% pervy dudes, this place probably just has around the range of 20% so they are still there and worth being aware of. The male / female ratio also seems a bit more balanced, I'd say like 60% male to 40% female on average. I would have guessed before going that it would be like 90% male to 10% female just because most clothing optional places scare women off / allure dudes. Also there are a bunch of people who live there at the place, in some kind of work program, and I had read a few reviews on here (or somewhere) that visitors felt like those people were kind of snobby. Like it was their house and we were just visitors and lucky they let us in at all, I never noticed that in my first few visits but in my last couple I have picked up on that vibe. I am a male so I can't totally speak for how things are from the female perspective, but I have only seen maybe once or twice some dude be a jerk to some woman, in the sense of like talking to her / hitting on her when she definitely is not interested. So I think women could come out there and generally not be harassed too much. All in all though, if you live somewhat close to this place, like in Santa Rosa or something I would say check it out just to see if you vibe to it. But if its anymore than a 3 hour drive for you then I'd say its probably not worth it. read more

Perfect IF.... You are an overprivileged, white yuppie/hipster wanting to improve your superficial facade of faux spirituality and zen-acceptance. A wonderful place that only gets 2 stars because it is not what is advertised. I came looking for the 1970's new age spiritualism touted on their website (http://www.harbin.org/community/church/) as I am a neo-pagan myself. If I had read any reviews prior I would have realized no such thing exists there anymore. Maybe if I had made it on equinox as planned, I might have found some.... But the spirit is gone. Start with the good. The Hot pool is HOT. I seem to recall reading it is about 115F (please check that as I am not sure exactly). Soak for about 5 minutes and it does become spiritual. Kind of like a good sweat lodge. Don't go in if you are not looking for a spiritual encounter. The community kitchen The history of mankind revolves around community food preparation and sharing. This is a great place to meet people and share strange and wonderful foods. You are keeping yourself apart from a wonderful community of people by eating in the restaurants. I'm sure the food is good, but it's not community. If you are looking for the meaning of life, start here. Really. 8000 acres and miles of trails. Not sure what everyone else does after soaking for an hour as I have never met anyone on any of the trails. Ever. (Download the map here as it is dificult to find on the website: http://www.harbin.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/maptrail.pdf.) Clothing optional everywhere. (http://www.harbin.org/reservations/before-your-visit/) Everywhere but the kitchen (county health department rule). I enjoy hiking nude. It can be very inexpensive. Bring your own food and tent and enjoy all the other amenities. Everything is neat and clean. Kitchen, rooms, general store, camp sites, even the parking lots. End with the bad. The Spirit is gone. Have yet to find a review that even mentions that this is a church property and organization. The purpose is to find a spiritual connection. The occasional gawker. Male AND female. You will see people Nekkid! Please do not stare. If you have never seen other people nude before, go to a nude beach first. If you choose to walk naked anywhere other than between pools, expect the younger guys to snigger and the girls to talk. In conclusion You will be visiting a Church property. Open your hearts and minds. Enjoy the people you meet. Find their joy in life and you might find your own. read more

First, Harbin really is a great place. The mountains and fresh air plus mineral springs and a conscious community makes it worth my 2 hour drive. I have been there probably 6 times in the past two years. I would love to go more! During stressful periods of my life, I find Harbin calling to me "come soak in the pools and go inside yourself for peace and to let go of all that's weighing you down!" There's many ways to experience the environment on a personal level like soaking in the tubs, relaxing on the sun deck, going for a hike, going to a Biodanza class, watching a movie or singing kirtan. Plus the food is good and healthy. By the way, if you want to cook your own meals, you can do it up in the community kitchen. I've found it to be a great experience. The restaurant is good too but over my budget unless I share the meal. Being in my birthday suit is no biggie because everyone is the same. I feel all my stress coming out of my pores as I lay on my back in the pool. (By the way, to all the men who suddenly want to jump on that opportunity of me being vulnerable on my back... back off!... please :) There is an unspoken etiquette when in the hot tubs... don't say "Hi" or make eye contact with men because they will think you want more. Women be aware of the Watsu sharks. They like to get their hands all over you this way. But hey, we're in a public place and it feels good to be carried around in the water like a baby. So if that's what you're looking for, smile at the handsome man in the corner). Also, I would appreciate it if the make-out sessions can move some place else. And please no sex in the pools. There's bodily fluids that come out and we are bathing in it, okay! I need to feel safe to let myself be vulnerable so I can let go, and I know how to take care of myself, speak my truth, and allow my body and mind to be free. I have gone to Harbin with my neck and shoulder in knots and left Harbin with all pain relieved. New people reading this, please don't get me wrong about the above comments... most of the time it's just a chill place, totally comfortable and quiet. Nothing to be worried about. Harbin staff, thank you for your many many years of operation and for creating such a sacred space for healing and community. read more

GROSS STRAIGHT GUYS EVERYWHERE! We had such high hopes for this place and after making room for the COCKROACHES in our room, dealing with the mold on the walls in the hallway of the Dome rooms, accepting that the entire place is dirty and the rules go as far as print....we decided to just focus on the hot water and soak away all our disappointments ..... Well our plan went down in flames when we were finally driven out by the predatorial vibe. The guys sit and stand and stare at you. They fondle their penises and walk around like they are what you have come to see. It was so gross. This description will not convey what goes on there but may give you a slight feel for it. At one point I was so grossed out by the guys and all the body stuff floating in the heart pool I went in to the steam room for a few minutes and upon my return to the pool my friend had two guys book ending her. I walked over and suggested we leave at which point she began to get out of the pool which caused one of the guys to grab her on her forearm. SO UNCOOL. We quickly walked through the sea of naked wandering guys staring at us as though we were options on which to bid. I am not exaggerating to write a funny post or to do harm to Harbin as I do think the staff sets a decent intention and yet I wish I had read this review before I went as their intentions/rules fall to the wind. I have spent time at Esalen etc and this is not, NOT, that. This is not a groovy, spiritual place for relaxing and healing made up of evolved people who want to focus on integrity around coming together naked and being safe. This place is a front for a seriously UNREGULATED STRAIGHT MALE SEX HAVEN and its gross. I used to fear people who had done way too much therapy and now after a stay at Harbin my fear is scared of people who have never looked at their crap and think because they get naked, smoke pot and eat green food that they are evolved. Not. Women, think twice unless you are going with an Alpha guy. read more

OK. I've read the reviews, so I need to add my perspective, both positive and negative. Harbin is really a unique, beautiful place to kick back and relax. There's nothing quite like soaking in the warm pool in the early morning, or doing the hot/cold pools to let go of monkey mind. The place is clothing optional, without being creepy nudist. If you camp and use the guest kitchen, it's affordable. The massage staff is above average. Yoga's free. The dance is fun. The hippie, new age vibe can be amusing, and guarantees a few good stories when you return to the city. Most of the complaints posted here say more about the reviewer than Harbin. Like Burning Man (or life!), you see what you want to see. That said, the rooms are overpriced, old lady tacky, and have no soundproofing, so camp or stay at the casino in Middletown if you want a good night sleep for your money. And the restaurant is very expensive for a cafeteria with a long wait, dirty tables, and a dishwasher running constantly. The general store is convenient, but also very pricey. Buy food in Middletown. My biggest complaint about Harbin lately is how plain old greed is ruining the place. Rather than restrict the number of visitors, they admit everyone who shows up. As a result, (especially on weekends and in the summer months) the place can be very overcrowded, the pools get dirty, the employees becomes stressed, camping is packed, and parking is impossible. The place completely loses its retreat atmosphere. I have been told that this policy is due to the senile owner buying thousands of acres of land with no purpose, and the management has to raise money to make the mortgage payments. If this is so, someone needs to step in and change the policy, as they are destroying a good thing, and people like me won't return any more. I see it in many of the reviews here. So, my advice? Visit in the off-season, and don't go on weekends. If you follow my advice, I hope you'll enjoy your visit! read more

I've been a nudist/naturist for over 40 years, and I've frequented Harbin since 1995. I love the setting in that cul de sac canyon where I go nude hiking every time I'm there, and of course the natural hot waters are wonderful. However the reason I don't give Harbin 5 stars is because of the glaring hypocrisy on the part of Harbin's management. Harbin's prohibition on nudity in all the common indoor areas is not illegal in terms of Lake County's requirements, but Harbin management lies and says they don't permit nudity in the common indoor areas because it's illegal. I checked this out by contacting Lake County. When I confronted Harbin with this fact finding then they switched their story and said they don't want anyone to be offended by seeing nude bodies in the common indoor areas. Say what? There are nude people everywhere, nobody's eyes can escape seeing nude bodies, yet somehow if a nude body is indoors it's obscene and offensive? How can Harbin consider itself "spiritual" when true spirituality is not offended by seeing the natural unclothed human body? If you want to go to a truly non-hypocritical naturist venue in a natural setting that makes Harbin look like a ghetto, go to Orient Land Trust Valley View Naturist Hot Springs Resort in Colorado. It's about 25 miles north of Crestone and nestled into the foothills of the towering Sangre de Cristo mountain range. Valley View's elevation is 8,000 feet and the views are nothing short of spectacular. No prohibitions where one can be nude, not even in any of the common indoor areas. Except in the cold mornings and at night, you never have to put on clothes while you're there. It is a true nudist's paradise where those of us who know what true personal liberation means can live it. read more

Harbin used to be one of my favorite places and I have been visiting for about 30 years. It has become incredibly unfriendly and abusive towards visitors including me, issuing parking tickets when my stay was already paid, forcing me to pay incorrect fines, never informing me ahead of time of new extreme penalties and rules, completely disregarding disability needs (in my case and from reading other reviews apparently others as well,) ignoring or disregarding both my emails and complaint, a request for refund of illegal fines filed in the office at the time. I wondered if this was simply dysfunctional and misguided policies, but I am starting to wonder if it is outright corruption as that is more and more common these days. Harbin also is having more and more of a corporate and for the wealthy only behavior. Because of my long history with Harbin I wrote an in depth explanation and admittedly long (four pages, happy to share with all interested if possible - my email is: alanheartsong@gmail.com), but all important feedback and information. No response except an email mid-December claiming I still owed for my last visit in November and the illegitimate (from August) parking ticket which I was forced to pay at that time because of the threat of being thrown out after already paying for the current visit, late at night, in a rainstorm, after driving many hours. The fire was terrible and sad, but worst of all is that instead of a more compassionate and caring recovery, Harbin management, at least in terms of treatment of guests, appears really rotten!! I hope conscious and caring people will rally to restore what once was our beloved "Heart Consciousness Church" read more

It's a miracle Harbin hasn't been shut down or revamped with new management yet. Expensive and dubious sounding 'holistic healing' and 'tantric' therapies, clueless and incompetent staff (especially Bob, the senile head of security) clearly unfit for employment elsewhere, overpriced food in the canteen and store, panhandlers in the guise of hippies, dirty old men ever ready to offer pyt's a 'free watsu session', flabby, aging cougar divorcees looking for fresh trailer park meat, dreadlocked nymphets recovering from burning man or bhakti fest, sf yuppies out for weekend snatch-gazing and dodgy sex-guru types are par for the course at this 'alternative' retreat. On the plus side, the grounds are pretty nice, the hot and cold water pools are superlative and some decent yoga instructors have taken up residence on the premises. Harbin qualifies as an interesting field study environment for sociologists and psychologists, but not as a holiday destination or a place to relax with family and friends unless you've been single a long time and will hump anything on two or four legs that walks by.. Word to the wise: Conduct a crash course in professionalism, manners and etiquette for the staff and/or Fire everyone, bring in new investors, overhaul the premises, and smarten up the place. Weed out the trailer trash, redneck hippies and losers. Get rid of the woo-hoo 'sex-guru' type bullshit and bring in serious eastern and western academics with bonafide credentials. Discourage mindless frivolity and tacky new age nonsense, focus on credible, legitimate and top notch healing and learning modalities. Have a minimum IQ test for future employees. read more

This place is a joke! The Watusi I had was a complete waste of time. Getting pushed around in the water, so what? Looking for transformation? Try a Lomi massage! The staff is rude, the service is horrible, to food is the worst ever. The place is overpriced and very filthy and needs to be renovated to torn down. The pools.... well if you go at night when you can't see all the hair and crap floating in them. Don't go during the day or you'll be grossed out. There's no talking allowed so people can meditate in the pools.. ya right! No one is meditating. There's plenty of guys with erections walking around, asking if they can practice their Watusi on you. Tons of groping going on in the name of Watusi, even though there's a sign saying no sexual activity. You can't make any noise without someone telling you to be quiet, but on the other hand there's loud music from their "temple" , staff talking loud on their walky talky's, and people stomping around in the buildings at all hours of the night. It's so depressing and repressive it makes me sick. They have completely lost the idea of joy and happiness in exchange for Nazi like domination. The "I'm more enlightened than you are" attitude of most of the regulars makes me want to puke. The energy of the people with all their crap is offensive. I've been there twice now for workshops and that is the last time I'll ever go to Harbin. If you facilitate workshops have it some place else! PLEASE, don't waste your time and money going to this wanna be, poser, hippy commune! You may catch something!!! read more

This place was WACKY! I'm from Philly but was visiting some college buddies that I hadn't seen in three years....little did I know that they turned hippy. They told me we were going to a casino and then they take me HERE. This place was FUCKING WACKY MAN. So I decide to give it a chance and try the whole meditation thing. To get in the zone I smoke up. I go up to the naked pools and I am buggin out. I almost lost it man! Fucking ridiculous. I know I'm not supposed to be looking at all the naked people, so while I'm meditating all I'm thinking is "no boner, no boner, no boner...". It became my mantra. So listen, I do math pretty well, I'm an accountant. A titty bar in Atlantic City costs something like 250 a night and you see maybe 10 sets of tities. At this place, I must've seen something like thirty sets - given some of them were whack. There were some beautiful women here man, but you do have to put up with a lot of harry nuts. My buddy had the best joke of the trip. He came up to each of my friends and said "Nice penis." Dude I've never seen so much cock in my life. This might be nice for some people but i'm too much of a perve for this place. read more

What a revolting place. A place that is chill enough to be clothing-optional would typically be a relaxing experience, but no! The customer service is run by deranged fascists, I literally had to argue with these people that I would dispute credit card charges on my bill because I was not going to pay for a massage I did NOT receive and did not want. This was the most abysmal experience I have ever had. These people run a disgusting, dirty, angry, and money-grubbing hell hole. * This place is terribly designed. The pools are not put in convenient places with respect to each other, there no places to put your towels, there is no convenient place to relax if you are not wet (except on the hard ground), it's just a mess. * The pools are FILTHY. They were littered with human hair and detritus, as well as plant garbage from the surroundings. There is apparently no filtration. * The pools are tiny and always over capacity * The food is so incredibly overpriced, it is laughable. If I were in Manhattan's financial district I would expect these prices. * These people are psychotic fascists with trying to perform terrible massages. read more

All I have to say is that the website withholds some important information you will need if you are going to have a great time or be totally grossed out ( like my jaded ladyfriends and I ) . This is a pick up spot for weekend hippies! The vibe is predomenently sexual. You are either one of them or your'e not. If your'e not, expect the cold sholder. If you just went for a massage or to have a relaxing soak you will be either very happy or very weirded out over the amount of sex workshops everyone is taking. ( and pracitcing their new moves in front of you and little kids in the pool) The restaraunt surves mostly expensive meat dishes made to order with a price of around $27. The veggie food is bland and made and surved cafitiria style. Oh yah, everyone is naked most of the time. That part didn't bother me. What did was the feeling that you were giving these guys a free peek at your goods and there was no trust or saftey to be felt at this place. If you do go to Harbin you might have a great time just don't go alone unless you want that kind of attention and stay out of the warm pool. read more

I stayed in one of the dome rooms for one night. The bedding was not clean. The shared bathroom was gross. There is no refrigerator and the kitchen is not great. The pools are filthy. I hardly wanted to go in them. The hot pool is too hot. Men stare at you if you go in naked. A lot of weirdo vibes. I went to the pools at night and a woman was gropped by an older man! Security came up to help the situation but I definitely felt unsafe after that! The poor lady that was gropped was mortified. The food is not great. Minimal options and gave me stomach problems. As I looked into the room of where they prepare the food it was dirty. The staff in the blue room were you order food was so rude! There was two of them and one of them was sitting on the counter with their feet on the other counter where food was. Security is a joke! If you have a complaint or see something off they don't really do anything about it. And if you go to "management" about the issue they don't do much and dont give any kind of refunds. Do not spend your money here! Not worth it! read more

This place is horrible! Don't waste your money it is not worth it!! The pools are super dirty, I heard that they only clean them once a month! Gross. The vibe is extra sexual, older naked man trying to talk to you left and right plus the pools are very very crowded. In the changing room they have signs for thief, DO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING VALUABLE IN THE CHANGING ROOM! The WORST OF IT!! we met this young Japanese girls, they were staying in one the hotel room, and got fleas bites all over their legs in the morning. THE girls room HAD BUGS BED!! Off course they don't tell you any of it when you book your room. Last but not least, the people working there are pretty rude especially the guy working at the market, the little food place under the restaurant. He got so annoyed with my girlfriend because she couldn't find her wallet fast enough to pay for her food, which was OVER PRICE and nothing to write about. We are never going back, there are many other places to visit for relaxation and beauty. This is clearly not one! read more

It turns out that my wife got picked up by a "crunchy granola" type (her description) who watsued her in the pool after watsuing her friend who was not up for cheating on her husband with crunchy. At this point, I should point out that this all occured a few months before my wife and I met and she was single and l don't hold it against her. The point is that while I'm sure ther are plenty of chilled out new agers and nudists who are into the peaceful vibe that only being naked and quiet can bring, there are also creepy posers lurking (as anywhere else) just trying to scope out naked easy marks for a little no-strings sex. When it happens in a beautiful setting in CA, it's cool because they're just hippies practicing free love. When it happens in a meat market night club in NYC, it's gross because they are creeps looking for easy sex. Call it what you want, it's all about getting laid. It always is. At least in NYC you know exactly where you stand. No hiding behind a crunchy granola facade with organic sugar coating. read more

Went here with a couple of friends a month ago. I have mixed feelings about this place. The location is beautiful. The wild greenery, mostly untouched nature, and the clean air are overwhelming. The various pools that you can plunge into are wonderful. Ability to come back with no tan lines is fun. Trying and thoroughly enjoying watsu massage was very nice. But... What's will all the hippie wanabes? OK, you want to pretend to be a hippie, fine, I'll pretend to be straight. But how about you take a shower before entering the pool? Perhaps use deodorant prior to entering public areas? Oh, I'm sorry, you don't know what deodorant is... Never mind. The people who work there seem to be from another planet, or, at the very least, different specie! Come on, I'll be the first one to try on a stylish wrap, but the "cloths" they wear are beyond comprehension or description! Change the some of the visitors and ALL the employees and this would become a wonderful place. read more

Harbin Hot springs is awesome but overrated. Bring your own food, because their smallest meal is something like $12, and an entree is $27. I understand that its super far out, but its not a high class restaurant were talking about... you wait in line, you put away your own dishes, etc. The lady on the phone who took our reservation hyped up how we were going to get this "Egyptian" room and got us all stoked. When we got there they had given the room away and we got one with hideous floral decor all over it. They also didnt mention the membership fee in the quote total they gave us, so we had to fork up another $25 upon arriving. SURPRISE! The big silent pool is luke warm, the hot pool is SCORCHINGLY hot to the point I think it burned off the skin of my feet. The heart pool and lane pool were full of leaves and hair. All in all its a beautiful location, and a great idea, but I felt a bit let down, and felt the maintenance could have been better. read more
