Visit here nearly everyday for a variety of beverages and great conversation with the owner. Enjoy very much the cozy atmosphere and Victor's passion for coffee! He's so knowledgeable and always has a smile on his face. I enjoy my latte much better from Hard Bean knowing I'm supporting a fantastic local business (vs starbucks.) (Also, egg sandwiches and oatmeal are delicious.) Some reviews mention a concern about parking, but if you head just north there's a GIANT municipal (free) parking lot right behind the building! Cute little coffee shop right across from the Merrick train station. Not a huge place but has deceptively more space than it leads on with a couple sitting areas about. I went with their special blend roast, was told it's their best seller and I think that's for good reason! Was a delightful cup of coffee that tasted almost like it had some hints of hazelnut to it. They have plenty of other options available too I'd love to try the next time I come back. Staff was very friendly and they even allowed me to try a taste of the specialty blend to see if I'd like it before I committed to it, which was a nice gesture. Parking can be a little awkward but not too bad, you can park on the street in front and their are a few lots and side streets nearby that you can opt for if it's busy. read more

My absolute favorite coffee shop!! I am in the hard bean at least twice a week and I have had nothing but great experiences! The coffee is consistently good, and the food items are always fresh. The service is outstanding and the staff is always kind and attentive. I typically bring my laptop and stay for a while to get some work done, and this is a great place to do so. The WiFi is great and the atmosphere is always very calm. I love that when I go I am supporting a local family business that is hardworking and dedicated to what they do. I also got the punch card and my 8th coffee was free! Great touch for frequent flyers in the Merrick area. I needed to get "out from underfoot" for an hour or so and stopped in for a bit. Sat with a cappuccino and my Kindle and enjoyed the quiet time. The drink was as good/better than Starbucks and the place was conducive to sitting and reading/working. Similar food offerings to Starbucks as well. Hard bean is a solid addition to the Merrick coffee offerings. I have only been a few times, but their positives are the coffee, the nice ambiance, and owner/employees. The owner seems to always be, or very often be, on-site, and is always very helpful and friendly. The employees are all nice, some more than others maybe. When there is not a line, I have noticed them straightening up the shop and checking in with customers, but not overbearingly so. I think the food offered is a little above average in quality, which leads to a little higher price. I think due to the nature of the turn, the food isn't always as fresh as could be. For instance, I had a slice of the chocolate cake and the sides were a little hard just from sitting out in the display. For the price, ($7+ I believe), I would expect a little better... maybe a piece from under stock that isn't sitting out. I am sure the owner would have helped make it right, but I honestly didn't want to bother him. Overall good! read more

Went in for the first time on my way to the train and grabbed a cold brew. It was a $1.50 more than Starbucks... $6 mostly ice and then asked for a tip , it tasted fine. After looking at the menu I think the other items are priced right, this was just a bit of a shock. I may try them again with another drink just for the convenience to the train. I was really looking forward to their opening after the corner cafe closed. Hopefully they find their footing soon and be able to stick around. read more

I'm shocked this place has good reviews. I went one of the first days this place was open and i have never been back bc the experience was not good. I ordered vanilla iced latte w oat milk. I paid and everything was fine until i went over to the side to wait for my drink. The guy said they were out of oat milk and asked if almond would be ok then ended up telling me that they were out of any kind of milk alternative. So i sucked it up and said regular milk would be ok. I'm not joking when i say he steamed the milk for an ICED latte. So it was awful and watered down and i dont think there was any vanilla in it either. I took 2 sips and threw it in the trash on my way out and drove to another coffee shop. read more
