It was a nice day in Sydney, so we were looking for a place where we could eat lunch outside. Finally, we followed the homemade signs on the road promising fresh seafood chowder. Gio's Seafood Chowder Bus is literally a bus, parked on the corner of Wentworth & Esplanade. The back of the bus is the kitchen, and the inside of the bus has been converted to counters and stools where you can sit and eat your food. They also had a few tables outside, so we ordered our food inside the bus and then came back out to eat. Besides their signature seafood chowder, they also have fish & chips, pan fried haddock, scallops & fries, chicken burgers, hot dogs, and BBQ pork sandwiches. We both went for the seafood chowder, which was made from lobster, crab, scallops, and haddock. It was absolutely delicious, probably some of the best chowder I've ever had. I wished I had had ordered a 16oz bowl instead of a 12oz bowl. Another lady sitting near us got the scallops & chips, which looked great because the scallops were a really nice size and not too greasy. All the seafood is fresh bought locally, which really makes a difference in the quality. We had a nice long chat with one of the owners, who told us all about how and where he gets the fresh local seafood, since as he was telling us, the locals know their seafood and can really tell the difference between something local and something imported and lower quality. He was fun to talk to, and it gave us a real piece of local flavor to hear all about life in Sydney. I'm really glad we came here rather than a big restaurant, and I'm never going to forget that seafood chowder.
